I'm halfway in the video and i can already tell why this video took so long to make. Thanks for your hard work Lines, you definitely made a big impact in my art and i can't thank you for it.
Honestly, I only clicked on the video because I saw the automatic translation tag and made me curious to see how it worked. Little did I know that I would run into such a precious video artpiece ✨ And the dubbing feature really helped me understanding some stuff, it's so cool! 😄 You've ignited my creativity and made me want to try and draw again, thanks!!
I was drawing while listening to this so I didn't catch everything you said even though line art is video I really wanted you to make but that image you did was AMAZING!!! I absolutely love that vintage medieval like style!!!
That speedpaint is simply amazing! It goes from "That's a very nice looking sketch and layout" early on to something simply jaw-dropping. Probably my favorite speedpaint you've done. On a different note, a huge thank you for all your videos. I'm very much an amateur, I don't have as much drawing time as I wish and even as someone who only does lineart + grayscale shading, I'm still many videos back on trying to incorporate and ingrain everything that I feel useful, but... I certainly improved in the last months, in a good part thanks to all your great videos and instructions. So a big thank you yet again!
Thank you that's wonderful to hear, great work on the improvement it sounds like you've really put in the hours in the effort, and are seeing that return.
I was having the worst day and trying not to cry so I thought I’d watch one video before trying to turn things around. So glad that video ended up being Steve Brushemi 😂
Awesome, thank you! I really hope you enjoy them I've got a few videos built up to have a look through and see if there's anything else that might be useful. And of course there's usually homework, so if you do want to have a go at it and post it this chord I go through and Mark that usually a couple of days after I finish a video
So that video would either be very short, or very long. The short video would just be me saying "draw more, get more drawings done" The long one would be dealing with things like how to get an appropriate workload, how to work against burnout, how to make sure your staying healthy and productive and avoiding things like perfectionism. How to approach learning materials. Etc That video would probably be a few hours long if not an entire series.
@LinesSensei Makes sense! Just to ask, do you have any line control exercises you'd suggest to do? Or is just drawing the best way to improve at it in your opinion?
does anyone else just listen to linessensei's introduction in every video and feel like he just rushes trough it, because he really doesn't like having an introduction? so he says it really really fast, like, any faster and you wouldn't understand? getting right into the content of the video is nice ofc, but still a little bit funny everytime i hear it
I mean, I feel that way. I just don't want to stuff people around too much when they want to watch the content. I think it's because that's how I watch videos so I might be projecting onto other people
Thanks for your work sensei. I've been trying to improve my line-art for a while now after following the tutorials you made, and this is perfect. Blessings
Good grief that's a lot of hours put I to this. Thank you so much for the beautiful illustration and showing us these unbelievable skills. I use linear quite a bit and I've learnt something very useful from today's lesson, thank you so much 🙏
I'm really happy to hear that you've got something useful from it, that's what it's all about so it's wonderful to have that confirmed. I really appreciate it, thank you
you uploaded this video at the perfect time for me! LOL. I was staring at my lineart last night trying to figure out how anime artists have such thin and pretty lines
"Me waiting till the end for the secret brush 🤭 The secret magic brush got me like: 😮 'I can't make a realistic portrait of Buscemi' 🤣😂 But I love the message. Just like LinesSensei once said, 'It's not the brush that makes the artist powerful; it's the artist that makes the brush powerful.' Besides that, great video-I really needed this one. Like I always say, 'LinesSensei never disappoints!' Keep up the amazing work. I really love your content! ❤💪🏽"
I'm glad you like it, and I'm glad the secret brush reveal was at least an experience. You can also just download the brush if you want to have a go of it.
Me encantó este video, las técnicas mostradas, y la excelente explicación me ayudaron a como mejorar mi line art. On the "brush doesnt matter" angle, when practicing and following along some of Lines work, i realized that the way ive been drawing REALLY puts a lot more pressure on the paper than is neccesary or even good. If youre having trouble getting those very thin and clean lines on the paper, use your shoulder to draw more, and dont put pressure using your wrist, else youre just going to get thick dark lines that arent very good for describing form...
It's very helpful to use different tools in traditional to explore different ways of markmaking. Fine nibs will tear into the paper, brushes will squish down, crayons will break. Heavy or thick pen bodies will change how much tension you apply. And they can force you to draw at a different scale, too. If you examine drawing demos to look carefully at the hand motions, they're not all doing it the same way: Kim Jung Gi, Neal Adams, and Glenn Vilppu all demonstrate different grips and motion patterns, and some of their choices depend on the setup they're using. I still haven't found the way of doing digital that I'm happy with. I've tried different types of tablet/stylus, angles and modifications to add friction or lower tension, but the experience is full of compromises.
I have the same thing, when I use traditional media. Another thing that works for me when working traditionally, is a hold my pencil much further back than the tip of the pencil, it means I lose accuracy, but also helps me add tone and have more gestural line.
I have a really hard time starting on the white of the tablet, I usually draw it on paper and scan it in and go over it, maybe the new brush will help.
I did the same thing for years myself, what helped was starting on a kind of mid-tone warm Gray canvas when I worked digitally. It really is worth getting used to starting to finish and finishing on the tablet, just so you've got that all workflow which can help you get more works done.
Awesome tips. I've been doing the ambient inclusion on my lineart never knew that's what it was called 😅. Anyway loved the process and details as always
I hope your patience is rewarded, a lot of people have been really patient waiting for certain things so I hope I live up to at least part of the expectation

I'm curious on how you'd tackle a comic page. What level of detail would you use if you had the intention of making an ongoing comic compared to how you'd normally do a picture? Or would you use the same level?
1st: My Lord, what a beautiful showcase piece! I've been enamored of your work for a while, but this is something else. 2nd: You really got me with the brush bit. Bravo, Sir! 3rd: How do you feel about CSP's vector layers? They have several useful features that seem to make lineart a lot faster/easier, but I've never seen you use them. Is there a reason you don't? I tend to be more painterly, so I don't have much use for them, but when I finally get around to trying my hand at manga, I feel like they'll be a real boon. Unless I'm missing some downside. Anyway, thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos, and for giving us such gorgeous eye candy on the regular!
1) thank you, you are far too kind. 2) 🙇 3) honestly the vector tools in clip studio look great, it's just that I'm not accustomed to them so they haven't really found a place in my workflow. The other reason I don't really use them is that I'm trying to be where possible as software agnostic as I can with these videos so that whatever software people are using be It clip studio, Photoshop, paint tool sai, that the instructions will work for them. I do have a mate on the discord server who's mad keen on them though and they do get some pretty cool results, especially the ability to modify the ink after it's been laid down.
@LinesSensei Fair enough! And yes, the vector tools are super handy for line art. You can do the thin/thick thing, also select individual strokes and move them or adjust them as points. All kinds of things. My favorite aspect is the vector eraser, which lets you snip off any overlap flush with an adjacent line. Saves a ton of time erasing. The one drawback I've noticed is that vector lines don't seem to react to regular erasers/transparent brushes very well. They can leave little jagged bits sometimes. I think it's because they register every pen stroke as its own thing, so if you pile up three or four strokes or blobs of ink, you have to erase them one-at-a-time. Then again, maybe I'm doing something wrong. Always a possibility! I do recommend playing with them sometime, even if it's not for videos. Your clean line art style would probably work perfectly with it. Thanks for the reply!
I'm glad you like them, and audio is something I'm still learning so I do a appreciate everyone's understanding while I get through my noob phase on video and audio editing
@@LinesSensei Absolutely, I'm a big fan of your videos and I just wanted to comment because I wanted the information haha. You're doing great work and I think you're on your way to be a mainstay of art tutorial youtube.
I wanted to use the vector layer tools, but not every software has it so I stuck to basics to make sure the video had the most utility to the most people. Csp vector tools are cool as hell tho
That's a great suggestion, I do actually have that on the horizon. Currently I'm just trying to build up my skill in that particular area, since I'm not typically an anthro artist my skills aren't as sharp as they are with other subjects so I'm not able to teach them as easily. But I am working on it so hopefully I'll have something near on the horizon, stay tuned
Amazing video today. Do you have any advice on how to find the right size/width for the lines? So they don't look too thick or thin in canvas. Also would you have any tips on brush configuration besides pressure control? I have been using my mouse to draw until I can get a descent tablet and it has some limitations, so any advice that could save me some time will be appreciated.
So picking the right thickness of lines can be a bit tricky, the thing to remember is there isn't a right where a wrong size there's just different impressions you're going to give with different thicknesses of line art. So, thicker line art will give you more pop art sticker cartoony style. Where is monaro line art can have a more refined look, but relies more heavily on your ability to establish objects as separate using things like tone and color. While you're waiting on having a growing tablet, I wouldn't even bother trying to build skill and learning to draw with mouse. Instead what I'd probably recommend is take the time to build skill with traditional media because those skills will translate quite well to digital media, whereas no one will need to keep mouse drawing skills once they get a drawing tablet
@@LinesSensei Thank you, I'll keep those in mind. I actually have been doing that, I make reasonable detailed sketch on paper, take a picture and trace it with mouse later. Not ideal but can practice traditional art and get some descent digital art in the end of the day. The art must flow!
suggestion, can you do tutorial like how to draw 2 or more character like couple pose any close interaction/pose, I having hard time drawing 2 character I don't know how to approach it propally, not many art tutorial do this topic.
Hi sensei I’ve been watching all your videos since the channel started and my biggest problem is that I can’t choose colors for my art hope in the future you do a tutorial about colors
Colour choice and colour theory is something I want to cover, but it can be so complex and so nebulous that it would probably deserve its entire own course. How to summarise it down into a few usable elements and lessons is where I'm stuck at currently with colour theory, but it is something I'm working on so there will be a video on the horizon but it will probably be a bit of a while.
That's a really good question, they each have their own benefits. The non-screen tablets are significantly cheaper, and you don't have to figure out how to see through your own hand. I personally have used both, and currently I use a screen tablet. One of the main things I find as a benefit is that with a screen tablet you have better predictability of where your lines will go, and where your lines will curve. Since working on a screen where your hand goes your line goes. However, when you work on a non-screen tablet there is an issue with scaling that you may move the cursor, for example 10 centimeters on the tablet, but on the screen it will move 11 to 12. You will get over this disparity fairly quickly, but since I swapped between a number of different devices fairly often for me it's better to be one-to-one on each device. In the Enzo your individual experience will vary based on how you work and what feels right to you so try a few things out
Thank you for this! It is super interesting to see your process on lines! I'm curious what sort of PC you have with Clip Studio, because I would like to have stabilization on 100% but it seems to make drawing the lines lag a bit for me. I do have a fairly decent PC but maybe I'm missing something.
That's an excellent question, so the stabilization going to 100% is essentially intentionally lagging the pen. This trailing behind effect is what stabilizes the line art. It can be very hard to draw with high stabilization, which is why I only ever have it turned on at all when I'm doing the line art where I want to ensure that I have long smooth lines. You don't have to use high stabilization when you do inking, I do because I have very unsteady hands unfortunately.
@@LinesSensei Thank you for the reply! I suffer from the same unsteady hand problem, I've been trying it at 75% instead of 100% and it isn't quite so bad, but I think it is something I can get used to.
Love the knowledge I gain from your tutorials. Just wish I could watch them with my family around, you know? You should make a tutorial with a girl with clothes on 😂
Hey Lines! I know this not related to the video, but do you have advice on how to practice and study anatomy regularly? I seem to struggle with that and I’m having really bad art block😢
That's a great question, one thing I recommend doing for a bit of regular practice is heading over to pose trainer or postmanacs and doing a few five to ten minutes studies with visible musculature to try and remember the basic muscle groups in context. Let me know how you go
There's no real need to cut off the colour excess for the colour lineart, is there? since it uses the lineart as a reference layer it's only gonna show up there anyway.
Hello Lines, a question for you. When you say “use a brush with lots of smoothing,” what does that mean? I’m completely new to digital art and I’m a little lost as to what each setting does for each brush, but I’ve been doing my best to learn by myself. The program I use is procreate, but I don’t think it matters in this case. Thank you for your tutorials, they’ve been helping me a ton!
So my sketching brush has no stabilization, and my inking brush has to have maximum stabilization because I have the hands stability of a Jack Russell in a spin dryer.
FINALLY, LINE ART TUTORIAL!!!!! Finally my nightmare will come to an end, yaaaay, Question? is there a way for me to show you my art. And in your discord you have a red hair girl in your profile is there a full piece to that I love her character.
I'm really happy to hear you like the video, and the finished art channel and discord is when I go through quite regularly so I'll definitely see it if you post it there. As for the character with the red hair, they started as just a drawing i did for i think it was a tutorial for Naoki Saito Sensei, and I just redid the picture a couple of times, I can't remember where I've posted it, but I can post it on the discord if you ping me there if you'd like to see the picture
How long does drawing an art piece of one character in a plain perspective (straight shot) w/no background take you to fully create and render? I’m trying to create art for something I’m making, but I feel as if I take too long with my work and I’d like to use your answer as an estimated goal.
So that is a great question, it really depends on the image, what they're doing and how you're showing it. Here's one that took an hour start to finish (and you can draw along) ua-cam.com/video/9bBfY2XUBks/v-deo.html But it really depends, there's no upper limit on your ambition after all
@@LinesSensei I feel kinda silly because you did that video already which essentially answers my exact question. Thank you for your reply and additional information!
Not sure, the invite is still working because we've had a few people joined just today. See if you have a VPN, or try joining either on mobile if you're doing it on desktop, or desktop if you're doing it on mobile
That's to be expected, that format of brush is for clip studio paint. And as far as I'm aware there isn't an easy way to convert Photoshop or clip studio paint brushes into ones that are compatible with procreate.
@@LinesSensei Oh, I understand, I hope Google also takes into account older videos, hehe. Also, thank you very much for the videos, professor. At least I try to support by leaving my like on the videos. Thank you very much and future successes.😁✌
I'm firmly of the opinion that having to process the line width more than once (save for a few larger swathes of black), is a failure of the brush tool and unacceptable time-sink. At that point the artist should seriously re-evaluate the brush they use for lineart tool no matter how experienced they may be. A great lineart brush with just the right pressure settings can handle a wide range of brush size variance while still maintaining excellent control, speed and precision. It's no wonder so many artists give up on lineart entirely.
Finally, the lines-sensei origin story
you know i didn't realise i should make that joke until after i finished the video
I love how you used the brush that is basically an image of Steve Buscemi to make a point as a sketching brush.
he is a hauntingly beautiful man
This was so helpful at trying to get my lineart to look less flat. The line thickness especially I never thought of. Thank you!

For the photorealistic portrait of Steve Buscemi, should my musical notes be on a bass or treble clef?
Also what key and time signature?
so long as there are no follow up questions, my answer is..... "yes"

squiggly writing signature is the best signature
Piano clef

I do have a mate on the discord server who's mad keen on them though and they do get some pretty cool results, especially the ability to modify the ink after it's been laid down.
@LinesSensei
Fair enough!
Your work is as amazing as always but I had a hard time harder time with the audio for this one.
What about the vector layer? It has a vector magnet and things like adjusting or fixing the line width.
I wanted to use the vector layer tools, but not every software has it so I stuck to basics to make sure the video had the most utility to the most people.
Csp vector tools are cool as hell tho
I'LL BE TAKING THIS!
In exchange take this: *Likes Video*
Graciously accepted
MORE VIDEOS SENSEII ! i become addict
I'll do my best to fuel your habit.
@LinesSensei thank you so much, i'm gonna be your worse fan LINES !
This was my BG video whilst I was drawing, and I had to perform a double take when I heard "Musical Note Steve Buscemi" 😭
Excellent, from the sounds of it I also interrupted a couple of people's lunch with the surprise.
Lovely video!
You think you can on how to for anthro characters?
That's a great suggestion, and a few other people have asked for it as well .
It's absolutely on the horizon
Hi sensei I’ve been watching all your videos since the channel started and my biggest problem is that I can’t choose colors for my art hope in the future you do a tutorial about colors
Colour choice and colour theory is something I want to cover, but it can be so complex and so nebulous that it would probably deserve its entire own course.
How to summarise it down into a few usable elements and lessons is where I'm stuck at currently with colour theory, but it is something I'm working on so there will be a video on the horizon but it will probably be a bit of a while.
Can you do the shoes next? I've been struggling with that one...
"Brushemi" killed me AHAHHAHA
I feel like that's an overly short summary of boardwalk empire.... I really need to rewatch boardwalk empire
@LinesSensei That's quality, for sure 🌟
Thank you ♥
You're welcome :)
It has automatic dubbing, very good, I would like to know until when it will be in Portuguese audio?
THis is god Tier
That's very nice of you to say, I hope it's decent
@LinesSensei im a Beginner artist and its been a struggle
Would Willem Dafoe work instead?
oh god, that'd work just so well
Would you recommend buying a screen tablet instead of the regular tablet if one does the lineart-intensive style you demonstrated?
Finally he posted
Love the knowledge I gain from your tutorials. Just wish I could watch them with my family around, you know? You should make a tutorial with a girl with clothes on 😂
I guess in theory it is possible, in practice it hasn't happened thus far.
Let's see how we go
@ i just realized that you do have some videos like that. Do you have a tutorial on skin or hands?
Let me know how you go
@ Omg ty so much I will definitely try this!
There's no real need to cut off the colour excess for the colour lineart, is there? since it uses the lineart as a reference layer it's only gonna show up there anyway.
oh yeah, good point.
Wait, stabilization 100% ? how do you draw with that much lag :) Great video btw !
So my sketching brush has no stabilization, and my inking brush has to have maximum stabilization because I have the hands stability of a Jack Russell in a spin dryer.
How do you do, fellow artists!
Increíble video
The brushes won’t import to IbisPaint or Procreate for me. Is there a way to fix this?
Edit: Just finished the video and realized the lesson…
WHAT DRAWING PENCIL DO U USE FOR THIS 💃🏽🤷🏽♀️😅
FINALLY, LINE ART TUTORIAL!!!!!
As for the character with the red hair, they started as just a drawing i did for i think it was a tutorial for Naoki Saito Sensei, and I just redid the picture a couple of times,
I can't remember where I've posted it, but I can post it on the discord if you ping me there if you'd like to see the picture
Here's one that took an hour start to finish (and you can draw along)
ua-cam.com/video/9bBfY2XUBks/v-deo.html
But it really depends, there's no upper limit on your ambition after all
@@LinesSensei I feel kinda silly because you did that video already which essentially answers my exact question. Thank you for your reply and additional information!
Thanks again for another awesome video! However, I tried to join the Discord and it said the invite is invalid, maybe it expired?
Not sure, the invite is still working because we've had a few people joined just today.
See if you have a VPN, or try joining either on mobile if you're doing it on desktop, or desktop if you're doing it on mobile
That is what i was doing wrong ... I was using a picture of William Shakespeare as my brush ...
oh yeah no, you'd only use that for writing
Espera que tiene doblaje automático
.sut doesn't seem work when importing a brushset to procreate.
That's to be expected, that format of brush is for clip studio paint. And as far as I'm aware there isn't an easy way to convert Photoshop or clip studio paint brushes into ones that are compatible with procreate.
@@LinesSensei Not to worry, I found a suitable alternative online. Thanks, Sensei
I just thought yesterday that I needed to brush up on my lineart, how do you keep posting exactly what I need
listening devices, and some very amateurish telepathy
What about a person like me, who does lineless art?
probably limited applicability as you'd expect
oh dios mio, tiene español, por fiiiin , gracias
Glad you like it, but Google did the translation not me
@@LinesSensei Oh, I understand, I hope Google also takes into account older videos, hehe. Also, thank you very much for the videos, professor. At least I try to support by leaving my like on the videos. Thank you very much and future successes.😁✌

*family guy intro* The is worst than the time i was using Steve Buscemi to sketch artwork
Hey it actually works pretty well ngl
@@LinesSensei *Steve Buscemi pencil* self taught, no lessons thank you very much
Your oc looks like Dante from Ordem Paranormal
❤❤❤❤
I'm firmly of the opinion that having to process the line width more than once (save for a few larger swathes of black), is a failure of the brush tool and unacceptable time-sink. At that point the artist should seriously re-evaluate the brush they use for lineart tool no matter how experienced they may be. A great lineart brush with just the right pressure settings can handle a wide range of brush size variance while still maintaining excellent control, speed and precision. It's no wonder so many artists give up on lineart entirely.
What is the name of the app please
Thisnis all done in Clip Studio Paint.
They might even still have ether class sale on too now that I think about it
