I've been drawing on digital for 12 years now and I never thought of using gradient maps for shading like that. Mindblowing tip! You deserve my like sir!
@@user-qu1sb7sy1y Yes, you can pretty much replicate it by simply using the adjustment layer, set the gradation map, then under that layer you can shade in black and white
You don't only show us how to use gradient maps but also those nice tricks with the lasso tool clean-up and creating a layer for your flats utilizing a mask layer. You just earned another subscriber!
That's a great idea, thank you. I thought of gradient maps as a part of "post-processing" more than a tool to be used for real-time shading so far. I'm definitely going to try this.
PLEASE DO MORE TUTS I just got recommended this vid I watched it twice all the way through it was so informative. Please consider making more educational vids your way of explaining things is so good
LOVE THIS! Reminds me of the core things I picked up from tutorials (Kienan Lafferty, I think) when I started doing digital work more seriously. Always spoke about thinking of values as if you are carving into them like clay. Always enjoyed that analogy!
This is such a cool flip on my own way of doing shading! Instead of having the flat, base colors first, you focus on the shape of the character and then the colors complement the tridimensional display of the subject. Really interesting technique! Fantastic work and art style!
15 years into digital art and i'm speechless how simple and life changing this metod is. It's like popular among Asian artists method of painting solid grayscales for each light sourse and then changing the values into color and erasing the shading part but 50 times more fast, easy and clear for understanding. thanks!
jeez louise, this updates the Gradient Map process I was taught. Here I was working in greyscale and modifying the gradients after I made a B&W Value version [Marc Brunet method]. This is creative way to teach us how to make pseudo-FX layers. Seeing new ways of evolving a process is always great. **This feels like cheating for rendering (almost)
I've used gradient maps for final color correction and making it more harmonious. But this looks like a fun way to do some shading. I'll have to try it next time!
I came across your power ranger pieces a week ago and it inspired me so much I spent this whole week learning clip studio and watching your stream to understand this process, all I was missing was the thought process behind making the gradient. Thank you so much for this nice compact tutorial!!!
This is an outstanding tutorial for how to set up gradient maps. Short, informative and to the point. You get full marks all around! However, I did have to look at your other pieces to get a proper feel for it. Not something I'd use personally but it definitely seems like a time saver, especially for larger pieces. Very nice!
I seen your art on twitter recently and randomly seen this video in my home page. Really cool stuff and its rare that i see a spider-man drawing with gradients this good.
Thanks for the solid process video! Love how quick and to the point you were about the steps, it was simple to follow and easy to understand, I’m definitely going to try this later. Cheers man
I do this too and you can do some fancy tricks with a clone layer i find this really helpful for animation bc you don’t need to decide a color palette really
New sub here, this video was recommended and I gave it a watch to see how your technique differs from others who use similar methods. Imo yours is more straightforward and thus easier and faster but maybe requires much more comprehensive knowledge of lighting and shadows. I love this technique and definitely will try it for myself as it saves time and you get to a more satisfying sketch faster. Love it! Will check out more of your content!
Thank you so much for this method of yours, I have tried practicing with the correction layer all this time but somehow they still look muddy and dirty. I will try your method after this.
I usually, make a Frankenstein version and have a lot of layers to manage, hahaha. gotta use that gradient map. for people also, you can use auto action, to save a couple of steps, if you are in that position you find that you are doing the same thing over and over again
Thanks for sharing such valuable information! I need some advice: My OKX wallet holds some USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). Could you explain how to move them to Binance?
Can't seem to get this to work, when I begin to shade it's just black and white. I also can't hit the little layer mask button on the layer dock, I have to do it from the layer menu in the command bar thing. I'm sure I'm just confused but yeah
Do you think it's possible to do this with more of a cel shaded look? Not so much two tone, but more like a shadow tone, an in-between, and the light with distinct separation between them?
Hey! Thanks for your cool video!! I'm feeling kinda dumb coz by trying your technique and then adding colours like you did (your red colour part), everything turned out grey😭 I don't know what I did wrong😢
Wow this is amazing! Had no clue how to use the gradient maps for shading. Easy and quick way to shade. This can be used for a gray scale and then color like u did? When you colored spidey in red, you just selected the outline and filled above the mask layer? Or on the mask layer?
@@AzizDrawsthank u. So Aziz. I just tried this now with a some what clean inking and I am not getting the same result. I think I did something wrong. I see the blue underneath the color I did for my flats. It’s not a shade like here with spiderman. I wonder what I did wrong. I followed your steps. On the shading folder, it’s multiply gradient map(did my best to match what u have), shade layer in white(I had it at gray before),flats with the ink selected into a mask. Did I miss something?
Sadly you can’t adjust your grayscale shading layer in real time with a Gradient Map, you would have to apply the map on the layer itself after you’re done shading.

one of the best compliments ever

I had absolutely no idea i could use gradients for more things than the sky in backgrounds. I have to try it and practice.
You know, i think I've used gradient maps for everything BUT this. I now have all the tech.
You now have all the gradient map stones.

@@AzizDrawsty I will.
Dammm let me try it
this is super cool, but it looks like a 3d render almost. is it possible to do a more cel-shaded or ink-shaded style with the same approach?
In theory you could make the gradient less smooth and have it change from one color to another quicker by making the transition points super close.
I main Procreate when i draw, how do i go about doing this in procreate?
Sadly you can’t adjust your grayscale shading layer in real time with a Gradient Map, you would have to apply the map on the layer itself after you’re done shading.
@AzizDraws Aw man... 😔
is there a way to do this on procreate or at least make a brush that functions this way?
You can add gradient maps but only after you’re done shading in greyscale, I believe.

You can find Gradient Maps under the Adjustments button (half circle) in the Layers tab.
