My best HWD throw is only 17'-9", and that's with what's called the bowling toss. A single spin will get me less distance. I asked for advice on a Highland Games Facebook page, and it was suggested that I need to develop more raw strength overall. The 56 lbs. weight really is my nemesis at the moment for both HWD and WOB, which I've only cleared 10' on. I have yet to get a 56 lbs. weight, but I do have plenty of weights and other strength training tools to work with. What exercises and tools do you recommend using to improve both the HWD and WOB events?

Im new to the sport and I've had some success with the WOB i think Olympic weightlifting really transfers over to wob and sheef. I've done 2 games and hit 15 in wob last games.

@@kilosanders The judges and other competitors have stated that practicing the Olympic lifts will help in improving all of the events in the Highland Games. I just need more upper body strength to hold on to and throw the implements better and farther, and core strength for balance and stability.

That is a very impressive WOB. Some people just have it. I like to think I have the strength but have never cleared 15' and have done this for 10 years.

I honestly would recommend getting the implement and throwing it more. The techniques are so difficult to learn themselves that spending the amount of time trying to properly learn the Olympic lifts would take away from your throws. Just being strong in general will help, like increasing strength in a squat or deadlift. To get good at throwing, you HAVE to throw (and learn to do it correctly)

Throwing more. Try heavy/light by mike beech for training programming centered on throwing.
I have found heavy kettlebell snatches, front rack/loaded carries, and oly lifts (clean, clean jerk or clean press, and snatch) the most helpful. Rotational/hip mobility is huge too.
      Throw, throw, throw, lift.
