If you are able to take an anatomy and physiology class somewhere, DO IT! It helps so much with retention of proportion and locations of major muscle and bones in the body. Comparative anatomy for animals (real of fantastical) just stretches those locations and proportions. Taxidermy is another great skill transfer. Keep at it Bill!!!
If you want more steel ball sculpting tools like they're using, look up fondant ball tools! They are the exact same tool honestly, plus they come in tons of sizes and are way cheaper lol they are in my daily use for both ceramic and polymer clay work.

Incredible video, thank you! I really like the way you two went through the sculpting process, a lot of useful tips - They would have been very helpful for my batman mask...
Dentist tools are also good for sculpting clay with, and callipers for symmetry 🙂 @16:58 that’s fimo sculpting tool there extremely expensive compared to other tools.
so ... Monster clay can be re-used after molding ? I mean you don't really bake it like a normal clay and it's not really drying so ... when you've finished your mold you can juste destory your piece, keep the clay and using it again on another project ? Right ?
That is correct! Since it's waxed based it will never dry out, only harden a bit. You can reheat it and get it back to a working or even completely liquid state, make something again, and destroy/reuse it again!
Yep! I've known guys who've had the same clay for over 15 years. I do recommend covering any sculpt with a trash bag when you're not working on it. it helps keep the pet hair out! When all done with a sculpt I put all the caly into a crockpot on low then let it get to a liquid state and filter it through a wire strainer. This will help you filter out any stuff like silicone, plasti paste, fiberglass resin, or pet hair. Then I pour the liquid clay into different containers like silicone meatloaf, brownie trays and wrap the cooled clay in aluminum foil. that way i have a variety of chunks of clay ready for for all kinds of projects.
That was fun and helpful. I look forward to seeing the next part - I have a character that will need a partial mask that I want to make. I have held off doing this because I don't have the confidence (I flunked clay modeling in 1st grade: I was suppose to make a snake and it came out as a cinnamon roll. . . .)
I have watched this video like 1000 time... I am trying to make my very own Batman cowl and sculpting seems to be the hardest part....but this video has been very helpful thank you
This is a fantastic video, very inspirational. I’ve used monster clay before, and I heat it up in the sun! Definitely giving me some ideas for trying it again.
Love me some monster clay I do all my projects with monster clay it’s great especially if your doing a full mask that may take a few days you don’t have to worry about it drying out from the air or cracking since it’s oil based
I use monster clay just a little (watching vids like these to get a better feel for it lol) and I’ve taken to using an empty wax melt lamp to heat mine. It works pretty well for me since I don’t need a ton of material hot all at once
Crazy how you read my mind. ;) I was just looking into getting some monster clay yesterday! Cant wait to see your molding and casting. I'm looking to build a mask some time in the future and I have never done any of it before.
Just marathoned your videos and you made me realize I've been trying to make my sculpt material do the paint job too which has been slowing me down considerably. *Thank you* ....I might actually be able to start finishing things again 😅
Actually quite a few people (especially those near forests or highways) have collections of skulls and other bones. In America, quite a few are coyotes and small mammals, but hunters obviously can get their hands on things like deer and bear more easily. Not only are they great resources for anatomy and science, but the physical pieces can also be sources for aesthetic and inspiration.
Sooooooo awesome!!! Thank you for this. very inspiring and appreciate the trade secrets in these videos. I've been making my "deadguy" masks out of thermoplastic, and was wanting to learn to make better versions. I really appreciate the knowledge passed down and product info. Now, to the workbench! Is it possible to use a regular foam wig head or something similar to sculpt onto? Or would that definitly stick to the styrofoam while pulling the sculpt off..? Maybe there is something I could seal the styrofoam with so the clay and mold will come off?
Was the warming box a custom box or a prefab item? What was used for insulation? Rough dimensions? Im interested in picking up/making something like it.
