  • CustomGuitarVideo.com | Monteleone.net | WoodyMann.com The sound of wood - Woody Mann live. We rarely have a title which is so simple but at the same time so intriguing. On our never ending quest for the holy grail in fine guitars we truly had a day to remember. First John Monteleone tries to capture the sound of wood in his humble words, then Woody Mann definitely captures it with the beauty of his playing. You can tell that John is - besides being one of the key figures in archtop and mandolin making - a wine-maker. The parallels between fine wine and fine Custom Archtop Guitars are more than surprising. Later that day we met Woody Mann at Rudys Music 48th Street. Woody shared some of his incredible talent with us, playing some of the finest Monteleone guitars in New York City. Thanks to Rudy Pensa for sharing some of his Monteleone masterpieces. Enjoy.

I wish I could've bought a Monteleone back when he first started making arch tops. I
don't think I could stand being on a waiting list. Much thanks for posting your vids!

That Monteleone Archtop at the beginning sounds amazing. It seems to have a lot of the low-end that acoustic archtops often lack, and is perfect for jazz.
Mr. Monteleone, as an aspiring luthier myself, your guitars are a wonderful inspiration to me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and opinions here on UA-cam!
Best Regards from Cape Cod, MA

I NEED to hear more Woody Mann....and Woody needs to own that guitar. He's obviously having a great time making it speak as it was designed to.

I have a bottle of an expensive California Pinot Noir that I've had since 1984, as long as I've been saving for a nice jazz guitar in the price range 1/10th the cost of a Montelone. I suspect it has long past its peak and is maybe soured by now.

Woody was co-founder of International Guitar Seminars -Columbia Univ. back in 1999 ? or 2000? Few people understand his relationship with fingerstyle guitar and blues. The video about his relationship with Rev. Gary Davis explains quite a bit of the story. What was left out was the fact that he was the Juliard trained musician that ran off.....as in the movie Crossroads. The movie extolled the virtues of "Robert Johnson" when in fact it most certainly appears it was "Rev. Gary Davis" and the real life "Woody Mann" (as he ran off from Julliard. Many students inquired about this and he politely refrained from answering. I lament his passing. I invite you to prove me wrong. bill keitel

An archtop shouldn't be compared with a flat top guitar. The archtop makes notes that reach their peak immediately and then die away quickly. They have their own beauty. Listen to Lonnie Johnson and Eddie Lang and you can hear both types played at their best. What Woody played was a medley of mostly Gary Davis pieces. He plays it extremely well. I think an archtop sounds best when it's played with a plectrum but that's a matter of taste.

I really like Woody Mann's ability to break rhythm while still maintaining musicality. What a great video.

@confounder: I've heard wonderfully sounding archtops. Check out Julian Lage playing his L5 in Montreux (no pickups, acoustic) - it's dynamic and full. Regarding Maccaferris: Stochelo Rosenberg has a wonderful, sweet and full tone. It's mysterious - is it the player? Is it the instrument? :-)

Some of it is the Hesitation Blues, a rather advanced version by the way.

It's funny. I love his craft and his knowledge of it. But I don't particularly care for the sound of that guitar. There is bad, good and great. But there is subjectivity as well. I'm sure this is a great guitar. Just not my great guitar. Like I could begin to do it justice anyway....

Hesitation Blues but in my humble opinion as Guitar Player and Maker - Jorma Kaukonen played this masterpiece as he wrote it ...... and then again he used a flat top and even sing the song ......John Montelone build a great archtops and we should thank him for sharing a piece of his knowledge but honestly i couldn't hear any of wise words of a builder on the instrument that guitar virtuoso played .......

This guitar sounds thin, i would not know, how to play it in a ensemble. In a old style jazzband its acoustically too weak. For playing it electrical, it lacks tone and bass. Your roundholes are better. At least usable. Why does the demo sounds so bad, almost like a folk guitar with electric flatwound on it, gage 9th.

That’s the best player you could find to demo this this instrument? Sabotage.

Sounds absolutely terrible. I came across Monteleone's guitar making in that charming film about Mark Knopfler's guitars. Knopfler picks one up in Monteleone's workshop, strums a few chords...and the thing sounds awful, like a cheap toy.

Schall Rauch Yeah, I've never understood the appeal of archtop guitars -- they have an impoverished, kind of half-dead sound (same with the Maccaferri-style flat-top jazz guitars). To me, it suggests that the construction techniques used for bowed instruments perhaps do not carry over well to plucked ones. There's no questioning the craftsmanship, but the sound does nothing for me.

Archtop guitars do not sound as poor as this one in general - at all. Julian Lage played an old Gibson model, I assume an L5 (check his performance in Montreux) - it's warm, resonant, dynamic. I am amazed how Monteleone has such a reputation despite the, well, kind of tinny sound of his guitars.

Dear Mr.Calvo. I am sorry, but I do not understand what you are trying to say. Could you please tell me in simple words: would you judge the Monteleone guitar played in this video a good-sounding guitar or a poor-sounding guitar?
