  • Although the sandhill cranes nesting in our lake laid two eggs and had two hatchlings, one of the baby cranes is a day older than the other and therefore a bit stronger. In this video, the older crane ventures into the water from the nest while its sibling stays behind. Watch as the day-old chick learns from its parents how to find food and make its way in the world.

I have been around so many of these birds. From here in Florida to the Madison River rookeries in Yellowstone, and I have never seen such a precious display of intimacy as this day old golden beauty gave.
You have captured a prize from the heart of our universe.
    I applaud you !

that is so kind of you to say, edward. it has been my joy to watch families of sandhill cranes over the years and i'm grateful to have such up-close, personal viewing opportunities right here on our property.

Thank you for sharing. I live in So. Oregon and don't recall seeing these birds here. Amazed by our Creator how he instilled instincts to kick in at the right time and what the baby learns for survival in a short time. And the care it receives from parent.

You're so lucky theyre so plentiful in Florida! You easily get to capture their most intimate and tender moments. In Wyoming they are much more shy and nest and raise families in secrecy. Thank you for sharing.

I love cranes...i have a couple that comes everyday my house they really feel peace in here bc they eat and sleep here under a tree. I love them so much and when I see them flying away every evening to go to sleep around a blueberry farm around my house here in Florida.

We're fortunate here in Florida to be able to see sandhill cranes all year round. And not just to see them from afar but to daily have close encounters with these amazing and beautiful birds.

Our pair and last year baby arrived a week ago, this will be our second year with them, the parents are after the baby to leave the area and go on its own, So mostly its just the pair. Last year we seen 2 babies in our feild, next day only one. We watched them come and go daily last year, (we are close to a big creek, suppose thats the nesting site) One day last fall all three were doing practice take offs and landings all day long, that was the last day we saw them in our field, a few weeks later they flew over our house making lots of noise and they were gone for the year. It was awesume seeing one crane arrive a week ago, just sitting by our pond, the next day they both were here. They hollar when i take the dog out, or walk around in the yard, but they generally stay put. Sum people think they are a pain because they can damage the lawn, but we have 30 acres so who cares. They are awesume birds, fun to sit and watch the parents teach the birds as they grow, a peck or a push of the beak and the young one catches on.

last year we had a sandhill crane baby and when it was about a foot and 1/2 tall, all of a sudden it was gone ... soooo sad... I am not sure what got it, but I wish there was a way to protect their new baby this year ...

nature has its ways. when a baby dies, sometimes the parents begin over with a new nest and eggs. animals seem to handle loss much better than we humans.

Here in Florida the cranes live year round. But in winter we get an influx of northern sandhill cranes that stay in flocks separate from the year round mated couples.
