Sadly, they aren't. Good thing the people working with the animals are there for the love of the animals (but a higher wage would *definitely* be appreciated).
Honestly this is really amazing and I love his mentality that because it’s a man-made problem the solution should be man-made as well. It must be to some extent awkward or uncomfortable knowing that a lot of people are going to make a joke out of this or poke fun at it. It’s really beautiful that he set aside his ego in order to help the species. He truly seems like a great soul.
This is...this just made my day. Not because it's a "goofy story", but for the reason, that this wrong inprinted cranes would have to live such a long life without any partner if this keeper wouldn't make such a fantastic job. So sorry she's now passed, what a wonderful, once-in-a-lifetime connection to a beautiful animal. So sorry, Chris. It's obvious you two were meant for each other.
The overwhelming majority of keepers and staff in the zoo field are just as dedicated and passionate as Crowe. I've volunteered with keepers at two zoos, and they took making sure 'their' animals were mentally, physically, and emotionally at their best very seriously. It was inspiring, honestly.

Thank you for doing your job. I live near the crane foundation in Wisconsin so I understand what you are helping with in your job. It’s because of you that my grandchild will get to see cranes flying over her state every year. Thank you again.
This probably seems like a random question, but since you mentioned cranes flying over... Do they migrate in groups? I saw a flock of birds that had huge wings like cranes and made very un-goose-like sounds fly over recently (central IL, heading north/northeast) but I've never seen it before. It was quite a sight!
Love the story but really hate that you do Walnut dirty like that. The girl is in love and you are just flapping your wings and dancing with other birds. These crowes ain't loyal. Wonder what she would have done if you flapped your wings at the interview lady?😂.
I have a similar bond with a 52 year old orangutan named Merah at the St. Louis Zoo where I volunteer. It’s not as close as her bond with her keepers, but I visit her so often that she recognizes me. She loves looking at pictures of players in my Baseball Hall of Famers book. There was even one time where I couldn’t visit for two months due to the pandemic. When I was finally able to visit, we saw each other and immediately ran over to the glass and I eagerly let her look at the pictures. Edit: I have now also been letting her look at pictures of Pokémon.
@@meganlarson4748 There's a Japanese folktale, "Tsuru Nyōbō" or "The Crane Wife." It's about a man who saves an injured crane, and then later is visited by the crane disguised as a beautiful woman who he falls in love with and marries. The man is poor, so the crane secretly weaves a silk dress for him to sell in the city for money. She does this a couple more times, but the man gets curious and peeks in the room while she's working, to discover that she's actually a crane and is plucking her feathers to turn into the dresses. When she's discovered, she turns back into a bird and flies away never to be seen again. The Decemberists have a set of songs about the story as well.
RIP Walnut. And my condolences to her husband, Chris. Their story was amusing, but she brought a lot of attention to her species and their conservation. A great (possibly bird-husband murdering) ambassador and a fine dancer. She will be missed. ❤

I grew up right across from the conservation center in Lake Front Royal. We used to "go close" to their property at night to get to Point O' Woods, we would hear some really crazy sounds.. like growl-ish, roar-ish, just out of place sounds; but you could tell they were coming from living things. Naturally, I always assumed they were doing some type of gene editing to bring back Dinosaurs.. I think I just never really understood the variety of Wildlife that they care for. Lol That being said they are bringing back Wooley Mammoths now so who knows where the ground work for that was engineered at...
