- The Cupra Born is here and we've been waiting for some Spanish madness to get into the hot hatch market with a full EV drive train but that's not coming until later in the year. Let's see what's actually happening under the bonnet.

I don't think it's fair to complain about the power or it not being a true hot hatch when it's a €38,000 car and a 300hp Cupra Leon is €59,000. Even the 245hp hybrid Leon is €48,000. Compare it to the similar priced 130hp Golf, 120hp Focus or 130hp 308 (all auto of course). I don't think anyone was ever expecting face melting performance as we always knew it was the 204hp MEB platform and the Cupra badge just meant better styling and some handling tweaks.
I think I agree. You buy Cupra for the smile on the face performance.
I’d pick it over the ID3 for the interior and exterior looks but even in B mode the regen is not strong enough. Having lived with one pedal driving I’m not sure I could do without it now. In stop and go traffic especially it is so much more convenient.
I get that VW might want to make people coming from a petrol cars feel at home but why they would not choose to make one pedal driving at least as a selectable option beats me.
You missed mentioning the model/rrim/battery you had. The BORN is available with 3 battery sizes and two motor sizes but the middle battery with the HO motor is the fastest, not only of those three but of the id3's as well. So maybe you didn't have the most Cupra, Capra Born!?
only 2 battery sizes now 58 and 77 the smaller one was scrapped
Thank you Bob for another great review. You once persuaded me to buy a VW California and I loved you ever more for it. You've now persuaded me on the Cupra. I pick it up on Friday 😃
Great video Bob, It does look more interesting than an ID3/4, and it's priced better value for money.
Trouble is shared platform and Badge engineering means equal performance.
Looks great! Awesome review as always Bob. Think they are saving the bonkers performance for the future R model? Guess time will tell.
Oh wow, that acceleration looked non-existent 🤨
It looks fantastic from the outside compared to the ID.3 but you're right; people wanting a Cupra would expect something more exciting to drive than a dressed up ID.3. If they bring out a variant with more power and perhaps all wheel drive I'm sure they'd sell a lot of them!
Still not caught up with the BMW i3S 120ah (not the REX) which is seriously quick where it matters and I think Bob would agree! Love the colour though!
It looks fantastic
But I own my Gti outright I’m not getting into an electric car for 400/pm for it to do less
Yes, most wireless charging does get phones and batteries too hot. The Kia EV6 has a cooled wireless charger.
Great review Bob...just cancelled my ID.3 ordered in July 2021 and expecting my Born V3 in July....can't wait!!
Hi Rob, did you get your deposit back after cancelling the id3 order? Thinking of a Cupra too, but have an order in already for a Golf. Cheers.
@@johnday6845 Hi John, My car was through our Fleet Services department. Because it's not possible to order an ID3 Pro Performance Max anymore, there was no issue cancelling because there was a huge queue of buyers waiting to jump the queue.
I'm so gutted it doesn't have pillarless doors. If I parked in my garage I wouldn't be able to get out the car!! I love it though
You can option a performance pack or eboost in other markets with extra 25bhp.., I wonder is that an option here? And would it even make much of a difference as handling is ultimately what you want in a hot hatch!
Cupra Born is coming to Australia (the only VW car atm) but its going up against the much cheaper Ora Cat. Okay looking at the numbers the Cupra does have more kick than the Ora Cat.
I love it.
Recently test drove one, very nice to look at both in and out but the drive let it down, not hot enough for a hot hatch or perhaps I'm not ready for EV cars!
It looks better than the ID3, but overall I don't see why you would choose this over the Korean offerings. VAG's new gen interior and infotainment aren't very good.
Kildare Village have started hosting Cannonball Events which is class because I live very close by. Nice video Bob. The car was a little bit of a letdown if I’m honest
Saw a review on the launch of this car on another Irish UA-cam channel about 5 or 6 months ago, 39K excluding grant price quoted, went to look at the Born at the weekend thinking I’d switch my Leon order as it still hadn’t been allotted a manufacturing slot, 39K for basic trIm and battery, 44K for next trim up and battery. VRT needs to go full stop but that won’t happen, if this government want people to drive EVs VRT definitely needs to be cut from EVs,I thought I read on Cupras website grant was €5,000 and 5% off VRT. Leon has got a slot now and for €14,000 less than the Born, I couldn’t justify shelling that out.
It may not be a ‘hot’ hatch as such, but isn’t it a better instance of this EV platform than the ID3? Have you tried the E-boost version yet?
Yeah a bit disappointing. Now if it had a 1.4l petrol to give it punch up to about the 300hp mark and could do 150km on pure electric. That would be something I could pay for.
That's the kind of thinking we like around here!
Cupra brand has been a massive let down, I loved my seat Leon cupra
It's been a bit of strange one, they started just at the pandemic and electric cars gettting going so I suppose they find themselves in a weird spot.
Cupra Formentor seems popular though. I've seen quite a few where I live in the UK
@@antonycharnock2993 no accounting for taste I suppose! Most are prob 1.5tsi
@@mamba101 It's available in an e-hybrid too so £40,000 for the Formentor or £30,000 for the Born. Just had a look at the website. Still rather have a Cupra Leon though.
I think the born would have done better it if was branded as a SEAT rather than a Cupra.
As say it should be a hot hatch but for pose value its brilliant.Just my kind of car
Vw do a deal with riven and fit that for your motor and inverter, the Bosch parts just aren’t cutting it, the batteries are just too heavy for the motor and hp you fit, whether it be cupra or gtx models they need to match the Koreans and big t
Design language from Cupra is miles ahead of VW, which is so bland. Top notch review, as always.
Looks great but seems dog slow alright. Also I can't understand why anyone would want large alloys on Irish roads. 20" on low profile tyres wouldn't last a day down on the roads where I live.
Bob is it safe to buy an ev today (financially)
There's one lives arround the corner from me, it doesn't look as good in the metal as in photos
I think badge expectation here is the problem. But if it does what you want from a car, then does it matter, it may attract people to the cupra brand that otherwise wouldn't be customers. I like this far more than an id3 and am interested but wouldn't buy a cupra normally?
It all looks and feels a bit underwhelming for a Cupra although I’m sure it was far more fun than shopping!
You don’t buy an M Powered BMW to think hmmm can I do 500-600km and Cupra traditionally is Seats version of that, it’s sporty not economic😂
Great review Bob
hi. Will you review a Cupra Leon etsi 150 hp please?
You tell us how much the upgraded seats but how much is the car 🙄🙄🙄🙄
I don't usually say how much the car is because that's not the price you will pay at the dealer and there's more than Ireland watching so the prices don't make much sense. I usually just let people get the prices on the web site
A better looking ID3?
Did you watch the film? Yes, it's far better looking than ID3
Nice looking car but why have SEAT marketed it as a Cupra? Surely it would be better suited as a normal SEAT as their range only features hybrids at the moment.
That’s because the Cupra Born isn’t a SEAT
Cupra are owned by VW group along with the usual SEAT/SKODA etc and are now only making standalone Cupra models.
Before, you got the Cupra Areca, Leon and Ibiza, aswell as their normal SEAT counterparts.
However, that’s now not the case and you won’t get SEAT models of Cupra anymore.
You’ll still get the standard Cupra Leon and Ateca because they’re popular, but the Cupra Formentor, Born, eventual Tavascan and future models are all standalone Cupra models with no input from SEAT
I also agree that SEAT need more Hybrid/Electric models, I’ve had many of conversations with colleagues 😅
I work for SEAT/Cupra 🙌🏼🙌🏼
Deadly as always Bob .
Thought cupra were a off shoot of seat.
Now their own company Cupra can make it's own cars and logos but still part of the group
@@BobFlavinVideo I agree with your review 200bhp gti is so 2004.
It is a good way of departing from Legacy cars.
Nice car front reminded me of early 90s astra!
Cant get my head around what Seat are doing with the Cupra brand, they've completely bastardised the idea of it being a performance brand to the point it is completely meaningless. Its basically just a twatish lifestyle brand now, and not even a very good one. All that copper coloured accenting is going to look ridiculous in a few years and date very badly. Interior looks dull and not even remotely 'performance car'. Pointless brand in my opinion, should just consume them all back into Seat and be done with it.
Problem is it’s VW pulling the strings on Cupra now, SEAT don’t get a word in anymore. As for models, you’ll only get the Cupra Ateca and Leon that SEAT get a word in because they make the base car. However when it came to the Formentor, Cupra Born, the eventual Tavascan etc, seat are on the other side of the fence with the gate shut, not allowed an opinion.
This is classic VW
I work in the motor trade 😅🙌🏼
So you want dead drivers
I don't disagree but would you buy a Golf GTI with a 8 litre fuel tank ? That is effectively what this is
Hermosa eleccion 6😍 HOTBABY.Uno de mejor siempre en mi corazónq mañas no se la.🌹🤩💜 Son unos de los mejores conciertos.
