  • The Seat/Cupra group are well known for producing excellent hot hatches. Now they’ve created an EV one, the Born. It’s the first proper EV hot hatch on sale, but can it beat its petrol-powered sibling? Seat invited us to Spain to find out as Karun puts them against each other on track.

This test should be done again where both cars compete from a standing start. The electric power 0 - 30 mph would probably produce a more suitable performance figure for daily in town use, over a petrol engined car.

People calling Karun out for saying "Seat Leon" should be mad at Cupra, not him.
Their brand is a joke, they just rebadged a Leon and expect people not to call it a Seat. It's even clear how they made the badgE square to fit the place where the Seat badge goes.
What a joke, at least DS gave completely new front bumpers to the old models that were sold as Citroen DS before it became a separate brand.

It's like they're trying to pull wool over our eyes while we sit here saying "you're pulling the wool over our eyes", but they keep trying anyway. Other than the front end they haven't done much to disguise that it's a tweaked Volkswagen ID.3. Not to mention that the ICE cars are basically identical. Standalone my arse.

Started off very promising, rear wheel drive is a huge tick but it sounds way underpowered, I was really disappointed by the end. If Tesla came out with a hothatch that would kick the segment into gear. Apparently Vauxhall has EV plans for the Astra VXR, hopefully they don't balls it up.

Maybe hot by Gen 5-6 Golf GTI levels, but not by Mark 7.5/8, Type R, Renault RS, A35, Octavia RS, 128ti, or as shown here the Cupra Leon. Compare the side profile and rear end to the Volkswagen ID.3 and you'll realise straight away that it's the same flippin' car. Opportunity wasted? Launching with a 30%power deficit and c £8k bloat? - Think Cayman launching against the 911...
Seat are reigning in the E Cupra's potential to place it firmly behind their ICE version whilst they can produce more ICE than E and at better margins
When they have higher production capacity and margins, they will probably add 1, hopefully two front motors and integrate full torque vectoring - increasing power in line with desirability / prod capacity to create the goal of c. 90% prod to orders ratio
I would prefer more commitment, ramp up production with heavier investment in order to draw sales away from the coming Chinese onslaught - It would be easy for them to instantly outclass the Cupra R - could prob make it cheaper by the yr end too :)
£29k E Cupra R, 280 ml range,10% more acceleration and perhaps 20% less VNE would be very appealing as a daily hot-hatch :)

Electric vehicles are disgusting bullshit because they are so flawed. Look at this "cupra born" it's hideously disgusting, looks like a fricking mini van and goes like crap. It's extremely awful, way too fricking heavy, so hideous shape, too extremely low top speed... It's just so extremely awful. The problem with EVs is not that they are electric it's in the fact they are extremely flawed in every way. Look at porsche mission R or whatever it is called... It's electric yet it's a great car, take notes goddammit

Compare a £38k hatch that's affordable to a decent chunk of the population to an EV supercar, I do wonder why the Porsche is far better.
