Does look alot better than the id3 but losing a seat for extra range is awful considering the competition out there. Software issues on all these vag motors are here to stay. Haptic button s on a steering wheel is carnage
Been driving this car for a week. Software issues: 0. Haptic button issue isn't an issue either. Get used to it. Yes they could've implemented better but it's not that big a problem (havent brushed by mistake yet). Sliders on infotainment a doddle.
The quoted range figures of all EVs are still very much flawed in my opinion. The only time you are worried about range is when you're going on a longer journey and I suspect 99% of all longer journeys are done at speeds over 55mph and probably mostly at 70mph. They should be forced to quote range figures for driving at 70mph as part of the specifications.
It’s easy. Just take range figures as best case scenario, when just like mpg quotes they always come out at 30% less. So a range of 300 is realistically 210 etc
Manufacturers are obliged to use WLTP standard test numbers when quoting range. It's supposed to help having a consistent scale when comparing one model with another. WLTP is also responsible for the fact that ICE car mpg is also way different from the variations you get in reality. Though there's nothing stopping manufacturers also giving real life examples with lower numbers in practice they don't ... for obvious marketing reasons.
Yep, its on my shortlist. But its just a little more expensive than I'd like :/ but it is also more powerful than other EV hatchback options. Notably, the ORA Cat.
The Cupra Born looks far better than most small cars today by far. It has this cubism design theme might not be your preference but for me I would buy it. And Mat🌚you keep complimenting the Cupra more than the VW ID3
I think it is a UK thing. But I was asking myself the same question. In the EU it is certainly not the case and these 2 cars play in different price ranges.
The ID.3 starts encroaching on the Model3’s price (or it did before the latest price hike by Tesla) once you spec it up to a similar standard. I imagine the it’s similar with the Born.
@@danrspen That depends on how you define similar spec I suppose. It is a hard comparison anyway since they are very different apart from the ranges they get. e.g. you can get a 400hp ID3 as much as you can get a Model 3 with HUD and 21st century headlights (unless Tesla did a great leap in technology that I did not notice).
The cheapest Id/born is about £34k here last time I checked, and the cheapest Tesla is about £44k give or take, but the point is this car only makes sense in cheaper trim, as once you get full spec you could probably have a low spec Tesla which is very similar, just a little larger.
@@timscott3027 Still depends on use case. For me personally if I could chose between a Born and a model 3 for the same price, I would still go with the Cupra. Turns better, easier to park and I can get far more use out of a nice HUD, functioning speed limit detection and a hatchback over a sedan that accellerates very quickly. Of course that is different for everybody, especially drivers living in regions where superchargers make a big difference.
Don’t forget this car is the sportier version of the SEAT El Born when it eventually comes out, the car that this will be up against is the ID.3 GTX when it comes out, which will have seats like this car. peace✌️

Test drove this in the northern European winter and ordered one. The ride is so much more comfortable in those conditions than in the Model 3, for example. Also the price is way lower. Personally i liked the styling better (in the interior at least) than the ID3, but that's a personal preference. We have terrible weather for 4-5 months of the year, so the ride comfort is the most important thing. Frameless windows and Tesla door handles are not ideal either, because most of us have to park outside during the winter.

RHD is the traditionally correct side for the steering wheel but we won't get into all of that, as for the fuse box though it's only on the left side because it makes sense in more markets, and most manufacturers are too cheap and lazy to move it across for RHD markets
I mean... We don't get either here in Canada... But as a Fiesta ST owner.... The Cupra is calling my name! I'm shocked Matt doesn't like it seeing as it hails the same kind of aesthetic as the EV6 in a way.
Hi, I watch all of your videos and I must say you're review are really good but can I suggest something that is missing? Can you add interior lighting of the cars in the dark/night. I recently drove a car and night time came and was a dark affair , front and back 😂 unlike some cars like Merc who a literally a disco ball. Thanks you
The bonnet is really short. They've maximised manoeuvrability which is why the car is shorter than all others with similar interior space. Much better than having a longer bonnet just to add a frunk
I have an ID3 and yes, there would be no space at all for a frunk because the A pillar is very stretched, in order to maximize interior space. Furthermore, all the space in the frunk is occupied by the heat pump, which is an option that I have selected, the 12 volt battery and the washing fluid.
Because they obviously used what would be redundant extra storage space to put all the supplementary electronics etc to maximise cabin space and make maintenance easier.
I would like to know if these screens have brought any advantage to physical buttons? Or if the same thing remains and it was just another way for automakers to save money with less materials!

They didn't even try here
Does exactly what it says on the tin.
Straight to the point tho

6:30 As a owner of a Alfa Romeo 147 which has the same "rear" button to operate rear windows, it's a no issue problem you just get used to it the problem is when you're driving a car that has standard 4 window buttons and by mistake you open rear windows not the front
You own 147 before, Difaro5? Wow. Interesting.
@@purwantiallan5089 I still own it
This looks way better than the ID3
I have the Cupra Born and I absolutely love it :)
Me too, have the V3 model , traded a cupra formentor v2 for it
The cupra i think is the best looking between it and its brother id3, looks more sporty and love the styling with copper and black/darker colors
You should bring back group tests, I miss them, and sometimes they’re more interesting than just singular tests
I hope in the next video, Carwow brought it back.
@@SigmaJAD I’ll hold tuff ,it ll be interesting to see a revert back to buttons after this lot
@@bruts82 got to applaud them for trying different. I can live with it.
Yeah, I wish they would do something like ev database does. four values: City summer, city winter, highway summer and highway winter.
Agreed. In fact most people in Europe drive at 80mph so it would be right to get these figures too.
I like it, nice option for future EV drivers.
Not sure that it looks much better than ID3, but it looks much better than tesla (any model).
Front is pretty nice but there’s something wrong with the rear these shapes don’t add up.
The Cupra Born has 277bhp.
I’ve seen this live on road and is very great looking car i like that.
Yup. This compact even can rival Yaris GR sometimes.
Mat looks like he’s in full Dad mode with the 5 o’clock shadow and the sweater. 😅
For the record, I prefer the Cupra’s front end!
Some
Of us like daddies
The biggest plus on this car over ID.3 is the interior material quality- which is far better. Nicer car all round though- what ID.3 should have been
What do you mean it's similar in price with the Model 3? Not even close, in Spain, the Tesla *starts* from €52K
Yes Mat that awning will definitely come in handy when I'm camping in the mountains lol
I love the design of this new Cupra Born and it looks so sporty! The way it performs is insane! I love this Cupra Born!
Matt's comment over squeeky brakes is priceless 🤣🤣🤣🤣
I like the design and style Seat does with these cupras. I wish vw would do this. Seat takes notes from audi. Vw should do that as well
Don’t forget this car is the sportier version of the SEAT El Born when it eventually comes out, the car that this will be up against is the ID.3 GTX when it comes out, which will have seats like this car. peace✌️
I really took to the Cupra Born as soon as I saw it. So much so that I have ordered a V3 58kwh e-boost model in aurora blue with 20” wheels and a glass roof 😎
When is the delivery date for it?
My ID3 is a long long way from been delivered
I'm thinking about getting a Born V1, from your experience did you ever feel like the car needed the upgraded suspension optional extra or did it feel okay, especially over bumps and pot holes?
Test drove this in the northern European winter and ordered one. The ride is so much more comfortable in those conditions than in the Model 3, for example. Also the price is way lower. Personally i liked the styling better (in the interior at least) than the ID3, but that's a personal preference. We have terrible weather for 4-5 months of the year, so the ride comfort is the most important thing. Frameless windows and Tesla door handles are not ideal either, because most of us have to park outside during the winter.
Exactly, the frameless windows in my Audi A5 is a pain in the ass wintertime.

@@taylorthrall7321 Do yourself a favour and buy a different car, I have one and although it's the prettiest car i've ever owned it's by far the worst car i've ever had (and I started with a €500 Corsa!). It's slow to charge, it's not giving accurate range estimates, the touch buttons are a pain to live with. The view is appaling, you can't see a thing out of the back and the rear view camera is really askward and as it's low down in the bumper, always dirty and unusable. On the front the A pillars block everything coming from side streets. Just don't
Cupra is still such a cool brand, it’s coming to Australia soon
I really like that bronze colour on the front of the grill! it goes really nice with the colour of the car itself.
Looks stunning, but the price is mad. And if you pay over £30000 for the car you would espect les plastic sound interior.
My final verdict-£12000
Mat, it would be awesome if in future videos Carwow starts to present as well the numbers of consumption and charging in metric units. Like the range in km, and consumption in kWh/100km. It would be pretty appreciated!
Congrats to all the team for the work!
Everybody on UA-cam complaining about the volume buttons!! Me and my wife have had the car for 4 months now, we love those buttons!! Never "accidentally" pressed it with my palm! Not even my wife. I'll say that again, not even my wife.
It's a really good car, love it!
New intro is flawless! I LOVED IT!
it is anything but flawless...
i always like SEAT design.. it's superb
Gloovebox doesnt have so much space because you got the steering wheel on the wrong side😂
On the left side is always the fuse box. Thats why on a right steering car the glove Box is smaller
RHD is the traditionally correct side for the steering wheel but we won't get into all of that, as for the fuse box though it's only on the left side because it makes sense in more markets, and most manufacturers are too cheap and lazy to move it across for RHD markets
It will be interesting to see the pricing of the Mégane E Tech. It certainly looks more appealing to me than the VW group offerings.
Mat thank you so much for this insane video!
Thanks Okith.
the light switches don't ever get used if you put it on auto mode so its fine its behind the gear selector no?
I mean... We don't get either here in Canada... But as a Fiesta ST owner.... The Cupra is calling my name! I'm shocked Matt doesn't like it seeing as it hails the same kind of aesthetic as the EV6 in a way.
Been waiting for this review for so long
Me too, James.
Thanks you
Can't wait for 2022 Astra review, car looks absolutely amazing in black
Given that the Born/ID3 are ground up electric cars, the lack of a front boot is quite shocking
It's just money saving. Same as there being no buttons to control the rear windows and the temperature slider having no backlighting.
I think they really nailed the design for the Cupra and Leon back in 2015. They just don't look as good any more.
as I 2017 Leon owner I have to agree :)
this Cupra is 100bhp less and weighs 300kg more than the old petrol one, this joke shouldn't be called a Cupra.
@@redline589 100% Cupra used to mean something special and exciting but not anymore
@@pb7870 true. I feel like every other car I see is the 150hp Formentor..
I love hatchback this car is so cute and adorable 🙂🙂
Costs more than a real performance cupra did one year ago. Funny to see it has the same pedals as my ICE car. Was hoping they'd fix the infotainment button issue. Good to see they've sorted the cupholders.
Looks way better than the id3!
ID 3 looks awful, this is definitely an upgrade!
The most expensive Cupra on sale in Portugal is the CUPRA Formentor 2.5 TSI DSG 4Drive VZ5 with 390hp that costs 77 945€
Very attractive thing. Much better than the ID.3
Shame about the infotainment and ux issues…
Man, that GoPro on the steering column has seen some action. Covered in mud :D
GoPro done its job.
I shortlisted the Cupra Born but in the end, I ordered the new Kia Niro EV.
Being a Kia owner I was looking forward to the Niro e, but after seeing it in the flesh it was very dull looking vehicle, such a shame.
@@keithblackwood4475 It's all about opinions and I think it's a big improvement in looks, both inside and outside than the old Niro. I thought it looked better in the flesh than in photo's.
i test drove it today and i found that the panel with drive, reverse etc wasn’t hidden by the steering wheel? i could read and see it perfectly, maybe it was just due to my height though
That isn't a bad looking car to be fair. Awaiting the Renault / Alpine 5 myself.
This looks so much better than the ID3 no matter what angle.
Like to have known real world range of the 77 kW battery model 👌
A friend has the id4 and the real world range is over 400-450 kilometers
Many thanks
Love the look of these Spanish hot ev hatches so glad they are coming to Australia. Bit more expensive then I think they should be but other then that they are cool. Interior is ok not the most amazing but still cool
Mat, your hair looks like the iPhone 13
With all honesty and credibility, you are the best in your field, although I do not understand English, but I am a fan of you. I wish you all success and excellence. Thank you❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
VAG are really struggling with this electrification phase.
ID3s front looks frumpy. Cupra Born is a little overdone but much more preferable. ID3 will probably be more practical for aerodynamics (just a guess).
I like that it's RWD, but it'd be nice if it had 300 hp and a bit wider tyres
The front of the ID3 says ‘Volkswagen’ even from a distance. The Capra front end says ‘what’s that’?
It's another insane video!
This looks one million times better than ID3.
For 34k this car is awful, only good thing is its electric. Great honest review. The negatives far outweigh the positives.
You make car journalism funny AF Matt, keep it up maye
Matt, nothing wrong with the drive-select switch to be hidden behind the wheel. And the lights switches (the latter is almost always known Auto)... Please, don't look for fake or phony defects on cars. I get it: you don't spend much time with cars you review and you have to produce videos everyday. But please do not put fake arguments for the sake of selling us the good and the bad.
Design-wise I prefer this to the ID3, the ID3 looks like that "nice guy" 😂, this one actually looks cool
As someone that has a soft spot for VW, I like the Cupra front more... quite a lot more.
Nailed it with great looks!!! I love the looks of it. Wheels are great also!
With the larger battery pack you can't have the panoramic roof either. So you lose a seat and it's not more luxurious to boot.
Why you do not show the porsche turbo s
Boost mode
Wish we had this as an option (and the ID3) in the US.
The gear selector placement and the fusebox in the glove box are cost cutting/don't care measures for the RHD market. also if they want you to select 'rear' before rolling the rear windows up/down, whats to stop them from putting only one switch and making you select which exact window you want to roll? so much cost cutting going on in this car.
You could tell straight away he wasn’t interested in doing a review on that car,, hand in pocket no interest I’m assuming these companies are paid by manufacturers to show enthusiasm in some cars and not others.
