1 Year Skateboarding Progression | Girl Skater

- Hey! Welcome to my one year (ish) skate progression journey. Just to clarify, if you're confused as to why the first thing I learned was dropping in; when I first started skating I mostly hung out with vert/transition skaters, and skating a bowl was my main focus. I've always been better at transition than street, probably because I hung out with so many fearless vert skaters. I could drop-in on a 10ft quarter before I could ollie😂 I know that's pretty unconventional, but that's just the way I learned, I couldn't ollie properly for like 8 months lol. The first 3 months of skateboarding I basically just learned kick-turns and riding around, but sadly I don't have any footage from those first 3 months. So I guess this is technically a 1 year + 3 months of skating.
Anyways, I hope you enjoy, and I really hope this can motivate some other girl skaters to get out on a board and have fun!

When I first started skating I was too embarrassed to go at day time or even night time so I used to wake up at 5am because no one else would be at the park.
As a female this is empowering to see other females skating .

trust me I started at the beginning of this quarantine and I've progressed so much, the trick is to do it every day as much as you can >3 hours. That way you can get better faster and it gets more fun. Good luck!

i started with a pennyboard to just get the feeling how to ride it, now, almost a year after im getting a real skateboard and i feel like i could easy do it, so try to do it with something cheaper at first, it might help:)
Notice how her first order of action was just riding and getting comfortable. This makes skating easier(less injuries)more natural(learn faster)more organic(flows in better order )therefore more fun.

for the past couple years i’ve been dreaming about skateboarding and finding a new hobby... i bought a skateboard about a week ago and its coming later today!!! i’m super excited but it hurts that my family doesn’t support me on this investment. they keep telling me it’s a waste of money and that i won’t last long. oh i’ll show them, i will prove to them that i can do anything. (my family is also very gender sorted so they don’t find it “ideal” for females to skate)

I’m 31 and just learning this year. I’m trying to learn to Ollie so I can move onto other tricks. I think you can learn at any age as long as you’re not scared to fall lol.

It's so much easier these days when you know the real embarrassment is the scooter kids. Skating is way harder and the fact that you're out there trying to learn it, is something to respect. A lot of those scooter kids tried skateboarding and gave up. You can practice ollies at home and just learn the basics of riding on basketball/tennis courts first (smooth surface) before going to a skatepark if that'll make you more confident when you arrive. Finally, find the right skatepark by looking up pics on the internet to see if there are beginner obstacles (small humps, 2 ft ramps ect.) to go on. Some skateparks are way too advanced and others have easier stuff.

It’s crazy how much this shows that people progress in such different patterns and at a different pace.
At the skate park: Tons of teenagers thinking they are so cool no helmet or pads jumping and doing tons of tricks.
Me: Waayyyy younger than them with huge helmet humongous pads and constantly falling off and practically dying...

Everyone in these comments are sharing their soppy skate story so I guess I’ll share mine even tho it’s not that interesting;
I was ab 11 n I had an old skateboard I’d had since I was 8 n my family life was pretty shit and I needed a reason to be out of the house as much as possible, so I forced myself to skate outside on my street or in empty car parks even though at the time I hated skating.
Fast forward 2 years I haven’t stopped skating and it’s become a hobby I look forward to doing it, it’s like my coffee, I don’t feel right if I don’t do it and can’t function properly without it :)

i have always been interested in learning how to do more then an ollie and drop in. but im a cheerleader. ik kinda like so what. but i just have been seeing these types of videos all over UA-cam and it’s really pushing my buttons to try. my only issue is cheer. i have to have clean legs & i can’t be hurt. but im so determined to do it all while im young and honestly i think this video really is encouraging me to just go for it. so thank you🖤
Wear knee pads and start off easy! You can definitely skate and cheer, if you really want to try, you won’t regret it

It’s crazy to see a beginner progression for transition, I’ve skated for like 4 months now and although im better at Ollies, pop shuvs and 180s than this I could never imagine doing these transition tricks, keep on skating!

Thank you!😄 And that’s dope to hear, definitely 50s were the easier thing to learn for me in the bowl, I started on small quarters. Switching it up and going to lots of different parks helps too because then you can get used to skating different stuff!🤗
Easiest are definitely rock to fakies, although some consider pivits to be tricks so those you should learn, they are very easy aswell. The best thing to do when you start skating transition is to learn to drop in. You should start somewhere small if you can find a small ramp, and work your way up. It really helps a lot.

At first I had lots of anxiety about going to skate parks! But the more that I did it and the more people that I met the more comfortable I became. At the end of the day, no one cares as much as you do. Also just remember that you pay just as much of taxes as the next person so you have just as much of a right to be there as them😂

First start of practicing at home every day and whenever you are free, you should also first learn how to go straight meaning forward then try other things. You shouldn't be concerned about what others think of you and you should just be confident, you should also wear clothes that cover you at first other wise when you fall it's gonna hurt and just ignore every one and if they are clapping for you and helping you just keep on going :') hope this helps

i just started skateboarding yesterday. super sore afterwards (yesterday i was out for 4 hours and today 3) but it’s worth it. i can successfully ride down a street or path without falling or anything and i can turn really well. seriously if anyone reading this has been wanting to learn, DO IT!!! i waited so long because i thought i would suck and give up but if you stay with it you can make progress really quick. pls pls pls start if you have even thought about trying it do it. not without protection of course but really, it’s worth it.

i’ve been skating for almost four months & i had my first injury & lost confidence for a couple weeks but. after watching this, i think i’m more confidence 😌.

Hey so I'm in my teens, and just getting started skating. I have a park that's great for skating right near my house. But I can't find the motivation to get started, and whenever I do skate, I get hella death glares from the local old lady population. Any advice or tips?
Hey! I just started skating too, and I’m in the same situation (lots of glares). But something that helps me is music. It helps drain out other things a lot!
Hey! I used to have the same issue because I would try to skate these tennis courts that old people would always be at. Just put some headphones in and do ur best to ignore them! It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, as long as you’re enjoying it! And hey we all pay taxes so you have just as much of a right to be there as them!!!
tell em to take a picture bc it’ll last longer. don’t be ashamed, life’s too short for that. do what you love and do it unapologetically. you’ll feel more liberated that way.

Be glad it's old ladies; I had to run for my life once after being harassed by slouch-youth... they parked their scooters and bikes in front of the obstacles just to f with me, I said don't come crying to me when my board hits them. Of course my board hits one of the scooters (I might've given it a bit of extra momentum on my bail to make the dent extra deep) and they got what they wanted, a fight. So I pick up my board and flail it in their direction to get on my own bike and bolt out of there, while this happens another dude is getting a bat out of his car. I have to pass the car on my escape so in a rush of rage and adrenaline I throw my skate tool through the windshield. I manage to lose them speeding through a couple of alleys, but notice they're pretty much patrolling all the exits I could take from my hiding spot, so I end up ringing a random doorbell and explained as clearly as I could the situation and if I could hide out at their place for a while. Turns out it was an old lonely man who would enjoy just about any company and he let me in. We shared some tea and biscuits and I end up staying for like 2 hours... that man might've saved my life that day.
Damn... I wasn't going to post the entire story and just leave it at the first sentence, but recalling the whole situation actually gave me an adrenaline boost that made me keep typing... Anyway, fuck what other people think and go for it!
I started skating a couple months ago and I love it! I've started out on a cruiser skateboard, and I want to get a normal skateboard that you can do tricks on, but my mum says that I only need one skateboard. I was going to ask for one for Christmas or my birthday, but because my mum said I should only have one, I think I'm going to save for one myself. So far I can turn fairly well and I'm confident in riding it on smooth/smoothish paths and on roads.
Awwwe same here :)) I don’t want to ask my parents for one hahaha I am starting to do Ollies in my cruiser board though and it’s kinda doable (the board is kinda heavy but it has one kick tail). How is it going for you?

Both! I had friends teach me some things, but a lot of it was self-taught just from watching others :)

Yknow I got really excited seeing this video on my recommend and I was actually planning on making a skate progression video of a year..and then I tried to drop in and i rolled my ankle (sprained it) :( it’s discouraging bc now I’m kinda scared to drop in, but I’m gonna keep trying :-)

Dropping in isn’t that hard, it’s mostly just mental. If you know what to do then you can do it first try as long as you commit.

Among many others from many skating communities this is so inspiring to ramp and park skate as a beginner because as a roller skater it can be scary learning trick because you can jump off our get out like on a skate board so theres that extra feat factor... but I love watching videos before I skate because its like someone hyping you up! 😂 keep up the awesome work! I love all the skate communities especially the moxi roller skaters and all the beginners getting out there for the first time... never give up... I just learned how to 180 and 90 jump around on skates so thats proof on effort and commitment! 💞:)

I've been skateboarding for a couple of weeks using my brother's board and was considering giving up because I'm not very good, but seeing this only made me more determined to keep at it! It’s totally subjective! I found street to be way harder cause it took hours of learning technique😅
same on my 4th month the thing is i can do it on grass but as soon as i get on concrete i get scared to death to try it
Maja pawlik try ollying on concrete but holding onto something stable for confidence. I used the back of my pickup truck lol but maybe a bar or something will help increase ur confidence and balance ! Stick with it!

im 14 and a couple of days ago i tried out my cousins skateboard.. i’ve never stepped foot on one before. i never knew that after a couple of hours of practicing i would become obsessed with it! i became very comfortable with skateboarding in one day and im getting my very own tomorrow! im so excited to spend my summer outside teaching myself how improve and learn new stuff. this video definitely gave me more inspiration and insight. thank you for sharing your journey!

This is really inspiring! I desperately want to skate but I have anxiety so I’m just really afraid of being injured or going to the skate park being surrounded by a bunch of pros. But this helps me remember why I want to skate in the first place. I’m going to try and get over my anxiety
