Then about half way through the video you seemed to be talking about the "speed" of the vehicle travel. Was a great video though. I suggest instead of "speed" for shock shaft travel that you use the word "rate" instead.
Thanks for the feedback, yeah i can see that contradiction. We mostly speak in shaft speeds to try and explain compression feel. Most drivers understand going too fast and hitting an unexpected hard obstacle that bottoms out the suspension. So yeah, probably may be confusing not to stay consistent

Very informative video thanks for the comparative options and explainations.. I wonder why don't you try ironman shocks they perform just as good as fox 2.5 and would love to see your feedback on the same.
I'm having allot of trouble trying to find a adjustable shock for my 94 gmc yukon. Any tips on finding some ? Great video by the way. Very informative!!!!
The only real adjustable option that bolts right on is the Rancho RS9000XL which truthfully gets outperformed by a ton of non adjustable options. In the absence of high end adjustable options like a Fox or King, it is better to go with a good monotube like a Bilstein 4600 or 5100 Skyjacker M95 than a cheap adjustable shock.
Any advice for the 2021-24 F150 Powerboost owners? The added weight of this powertrain throws a wrench into owners plans as we all seem to love the ride quality, but getting the lift without sacrificing the ride is a bit more complex as most information relates to the 2.7, 3.5, and 5.0 drivetrain. The Hybrid is approx 500# heavier and the info out there is hit or miss related to getting the lift, keeping the ride quality and improving the Offroad ride.
Actually from our testing they do not really act all that much different usually perform the same and will see similar lift with a little extra preload on any coilovers. Some circlip adjustable options like the Bilstein 6112s are limited in available adjustment to get more lift, but in most cases any coilover will not only have enough spring to give you within 1/2" of the maximum lift recommended for the lighter trucks but have more than sufficient dampening force for the additional weight. Although certainly notably heavier, most of that weight is not on the front end, and with the leaf springs in the back, a little extra preload on any front coilover you choose should be all you really need.
Hey, would love to see a video comparing the Fox 3.0, Bilstein 8100, and other similar shocks. Curious about how the top of the line “bolt on” shock options compare. Thanks! FWIW I’m looking at this through the lens of a wrangler
We have been running a Carli kit with Kings on our Power Wagon for awhile that has been killer. The truck spends most of the year in the Sierras so it sees a fair amount of cold weather as well. Ironically we actually preferred the out of the box tuning of the 2.5s used in their pintop kits over the 3.0s, but if you like something soft the 3.0 Dominator kits are like riding on air. 6100s are a killer value for just abut $100 a strut more for the front end. Nissans have a little funky geometry in regards to motion ratio on the front end, so the additional 0.6" of body and piston size does wonders for giving a little better ride, comfort, and support.
I want something better for washboard roads for my Dodge ram 4x4 7 inch lift The Bilstein 5100 are too stiff. What do you recommend no rock crawling, fishing hunting and some desert stuff.
no specific guide for the 96-02, but what we talk about in this video will give you a good idea anyways. An eibach is an eibach, a bilstein is a bilstein, etc - the brands stay pretty consistent across applications, meaning a Bilstein on your vehicle will be firmer than an Eibach, and Fox 2.0 will be softer than both. We'd be happy to dive into specifics though, text 213-433-3616 or email support@shocksurplus.com
Great overview. You covered a lot of ground without bottoming / topping out ! Leaning towards the Fox 2.5's for the GX470. Rear Springs to replace airbags - what do you think ? Linear Medium or something else ?
We see that conversion a lot, definitely a no-brainer. The Fox 2.5 DSC are definitely a solid choice, and those can be setup with appropriate springs depending on future weight loadout, or if you're just running stock and want a plush ride on the daily drive with some occassional weekend dirt. @shocksurpluse. Does SDI have e-click shocks that will work on my JD Fab long travel 2nd gen Tacoma ? As for the universal e click reservoirs option for kings shocks will they gather data from the tacoma ecu as well or is that only available when buying the tacoma specific set of e click shocks ?
SDI has a tacoma specific module to pair with the universal ecliks, same for the 4runner - to collect that vehicle data in real time to provide to the eclik system. We've done a number of king+eclik setups now, and will work on any of King's 2.5 reservoir shocks.
2008 Lexus GX470 with Hybrid front bumper adding 150lbs with winch and lights. I’m interested in Eibach pro truck series but there’s no info on the spring ratio. Can the kit support the additional weight??
it could support it yes, but the ride height will sag a bit out of the box. We can find the spring rate on the kit that comes with those coilovers, and possibly find a heavier rated spring to replace them with. Text us 213-433-3616 to dive into more details, and subscribe
Super informative! Thank you! I’m looking for a suspension upgrade for my 21 Bronco, what would you recommend? Weekend off-roader. Also, what do you think of Carli tuned suspensions? Worth it or not?
Carli is awesome, we've got some reviews on this channel about their systems for the Ram. Bronco kits are still in R&D for them, but i imagine they'll release a 2.5 coilover set that will compete with anything King / Fox / Icon have out. For whats available now, so far our favorite has been the Icon 2.5 coilovers, which we just put some miles on. The Eibach 2.0 pro truck setup is also really nice, but started to lag when we threw on 37s. If you're sticking with 35s, its a daily, then the Eibach is our favorite so far www.shocksurplus.com/products/eibach-pro-truck-stage-2-coilover-kit-front-coilovers-rear-coilovers-e86-35-056-01-22
Damn, now I want my Fox 2.5 (non adjustable Bronco Wildtrack) to have the SDI remote reservoir, but I need a little stiffer spring (to sit a little taller) . That'll be a frankenmonster.
You could probably run the eibach lift springs on the hoss 3.0, but i dont think the SDI Eclik will adapt to the hoss 3.0 fox reservoirs since they're piggyback. Eclik reservoirs require a remote reservoir (hose) setup.

You mentioned Elka. I was looking for them. 2.5 reservoir. With your experience, what would be the comparison and would you recommend them? (Jeep Wrangler 4doors, washboards, Overland and a bit rock crawler)
They are great! We prefer how brands like Fox, King, or even Icon valve their shocks out of the box, but the Elkas are built great, generally fit great, and can be custom valved just like the other brands, so you can not go wrong, and if you do, you can tune them to be right.
I’ve got a 2006 F250 crew cab/long bed diesel that’s my daily driver/ tow rig. I want to get into overlanding to spend more time with my son who has his 2021 Tundra setup. I’m currently running a 2.5” leveling kit, 35” tires, and Bilstein 5100 (I think) shocks. What would be a better suited (if any) shock for my future plan for this truck? Thanks
5100s should actually do the job. This is one of those cases where the best thing you can do is take it out, and see what, if anything you would like improve about it.
@@ShockSurplus thanks for the quick response… BTW, my 5100’s came from y’all. Though after posting this question, I realized that I forgot to mention that I was planning to remove the leveling kit and install a 4” lift. But I don’t think that fact will make your suggestion any different. I’ll reach back out when I get it outfitted and tested.
I have a 2gen tacoma. I want to lift it 3", but i was told not to go over 2 5" if i dont want to worry about my cv boot. What kit would you recommend. I want to have comfort as its my daily driver
I want to run 35’s w/ 2.5”-3” lift in the front and a stiffer rear in my 5.7L Rebel used mostly as a daily driver and weekend fire road overlander/camping mobile. Debating between the 6112 & Eibach coilover and something HD in the rear. What do you recommend? Looking to order asap.
The Bilstein would likely perform better with the additional weight out back , but if you are planning on running an aftermarket bumper in the future, you may want something with a universal coilover spring like the Eibach 2.0 coilovers use, so it will be easier to find a stiffer spring if need be. In the rear, I would definitely recommend a Dobinsons coil, however, they do have a lot of options, so it will really come down to how high you want it to sit and how much constant load you want to account for.
The only coilovers ADS has currently for the new Tundras are their standard 2.5s and Bilstein has not officially released 8112s yet, however we are fairly confident they are in the works. We love ADS and they make some of our favorite shocks, but there is not a 2.5" body coilover on the market that can keep up with an 8112 due to their internal jounce and rebound stops. This allows them to be more plush in their normal ride zone and exponentially more supportive against bottoming and topping out. They also use some of the best seals on the market which pretty much outlast anything else out there. We have tons of sets running around and not a single one is even close to coming back for service. Our only complaints with them are that the standard parts do not have dampening adjusters and the compression jounce cut-offs can make a little noise on the road when you hit a big bump and might limit upward articulation in the rocks at low speed, however the new DSA+ versions that are slowly getting released include low speed and high speed compression as well as adjustment for the JCO engagement. This means you can back off the JCO on the street so it is quiet or when you need all the articulation you can get.
We ran Icon's stage 8 on our Tacoma, loved it. The CDCV shocks were great to play with, and the RXT leaf packs have been copied extensively by other companies at this point
Technically you could but it would not really work all that well. The SDIs control flow into the reservoir and since these are an internal bypass the flow into the reservoir is less than what you would see with a traditional remote reservoir shock or coilover. So I am sure you would still see some benefit of the SDI reservoir but it would not be able to alter ride and handling as much as it would on something else.
From what I have read and personally experienced with my 5100's digressive valved shock like the 5100's start off stiffer at the bottom of the stroke but get stiffer as the stroke increases. That may be good for more aggressive higher speed hitting big bumps ect.
So i do like a 5 mile dirt road for my daily drive It's not tough terrain is just dirt road. I got some bilstein but they are too stiff. What do u recommend for me for that terrain?
hi, im thinking to build a cantilever shock rear system for my 79 jeep cherokee chief, (wagoneer kind) so what would be your opinion about the shock??, im want to stay on budget 😁.
Actually they are remote reservoir you can upgrade them with SDI eClik Universal reservoirs www.shocksurplus.com/products/sdi-eclik-universal-reservoir-system
no official release date, but we're pretty sure its in R&D. Would you pay $4k for a set? they're amazing shocks, probably the best out there, but may be overkill for a mid-travel setup.
@@ShockSurplus I would rather pay $4K and have the best, than pay 4-5K and get not as good kings and foxes. Nothing is overkill if it’s better and cheaper than the non overkill option. Bilstein is way too slow to release their stuff though. By the time they release it we will have a 2024 Tacoma, and by the time they release the new gen Taco version we might be dead.
depends what kind of budget you're running with, typically a softer responding 2.5 shock, or an adjustable shock like the Dobinsons MRR or OME BP51 where you can adjust the compression/rebound for your load.
We're still getting our feet wet with their offerings, our Ranger will be getting their kit, and working on a Wrangler JL with their systems currently. We were sad to leave it out of this conversation, but didn't want to talk about shocks we had little experience with.
yeah thats the worst part of the service need, being down a vehicle. We're working on a set of demo shocks, but that's hard considering how many apps there are. What vehicle do you have? We sometimes have options to send so your vehicle isn't out of commission while a rebuild is happening
I doubt OME will ever make a kit specifically for 2G Sequoias but Dobibnsons has an MRR kit that we think rides nearly as well and certainly offers a little better handling
guys, can anybody give me advise: standard oem suspension on BMW X3 E83 (235/50/R18) is really hard, want to replace and go to softer comfortable option what would you recommend? Offroad is not big topic, mainly city, highway and offroad very rarely... thx in advance for your suggestions.
Not a ton of options really aimed at comfort for that particular application, but I would start with trying to run a comfort oriented tire with a little taller sidewall if you can get away with it, and then matching them to a good set of OE replacements like Bilstein B4s. I would also check to see if it has the sport suspension options, and if it does, you will see a lot softer more livable ride by switching to the struts and springs for a model with the standard suspension.
probably no chance honestly, ARB barely touches the Ram full size trucks, let alone Ford (top seller in the US). If you want that kind of adjustability, the Fox 2.5 would be the best bet, depending on your y ear
The short answer is no, but anything is possible with a welder and a grinder LOL That said the motorcycle industry gets much higher tech shocks than their four wheeled counterparts
It depends on your goals, use cases and budget. There is undoubtedly no one best option for everybody, or a one size fits all suspension system by any means. Give the team a shout with a little more details about how much you want to spend, how you are using the Land Cruiser, and what your goals are for upgrading your suspension, and we can steer you in the right direction. www.shocksurplus.com/pages/contact-us
Been running 6112’s w/ 5160’s but I just ordered 8112’s. Do you think the 8112’s will be decent with the 5160’s until I order the 8100s. Are the 8100 bypass worth almost double the price without the bypass? Weekday daily drive weekend I enjoy going 35 to 50 on desert roads?
The bypasses are really for the high speed environments with medium to larger whoops (not trophy truck level though), and paired with external bumpstops to handle the really hard hits. The 8100 smooth body are more than adequate for your use, and most people's uses. They can still take the hard hits and rebound extremely well, especially in moderate-easy stuff
Old Man Emu BP51s can get you there with the rebound adjustment, probably the softest riding setup we've been on for a Toyota platform. www.shocksurplus.com/products/old-man-emu-bp-51-bypass-coilovers-rear-internal-bypass-shocks-set-for-2007-2020-toyota-tundra-4wd-w-0-3-lift A custom tuned set of Fox 2.5 and King 2.5s can also get you there, but not as adjustable as the BP51 in case you load up gear

How have you liked the eibach system? How has it been for daily driving? How does it feel hitting big potholes or hitting tracks hard?
Love it, the new Eibach setups are really nice, we've been digging them on our own trucks through testing.
just from our perspective after running eibach on 3 different vehicles, its not as sharp/harsh as a Bilstein, pretty good compliance that wont rattle you

glad we could help, we'll be here for your next vehicle or set of shocks. Lots of options now, Eibach, Bilstein, Fox 2.0
Very informative video thanks for the comparative options and explainations.. I wonder why don't you try ironman shocks they perform just as good as fox 2.5 and would love to see your feedback on the same.
we're trying out the ironman foam cell pro right now actually on an Xterra, pretty good so far
@@ShockSurplus thanks man I appreciate it
Any advice for the 2021-24 F150 Powerboost owners?

Best option for Ram 2500? High speed off-road And very rough roads, something that will work well in very cold weather as well if that matters
I'm thinking Bilstein 5100s for my 2011 Titan SV, seems like the best bang for the buck.
6100s are a killer value for just abut $100 a strut more for the front end. Nissans have a little funky geometry in regards to motion ratio on the front end, so the additional 0.6" of body and piston size does wonders for giving a little better ride, comfort, and support.
I want something better for washboard roads for my Dodge ram 4x4 7 inch lift
The Bilstein 5100 are too stiff.
What do you recommend no rock crawling, fishing hunting and some desert stuff.
On a 7" lift, the options become limited. What year, and 1500 or 2500? Text us 213-433-3616 and we'd love to dive in
Hi, guys. I have a 02 4 Runner SR5. You started with 03. Have a guide that includes me?
Thanks.
no specific guide for the 96-02, but what we talk about in this video will give you a good idea anyways.
@ thanks. Went with Eibach stage II
So far, love the choice.
If you're sticking with 35s, its a daily, then the Eibach is our favorite so far

Ordered some Bilstein 8112's and 8100's lets go
Any talks about ADS ? I'm looking for feedbacks vs Bilstein 8112? Before installing on the 24 Tundra..
I have ICON stage 3 on the rear of my Tacoma. Considering stage 4 or 5 for the front.
We ran Icon's stage 8 on our Tacoma, loved it. The CDCV shocks were great to play with, and the RXT leaf packs have been copied extensively by other companies at this point
@ShockSurplus
Can you upfit a BP-51 w/the SDI system? If so, pros/cons?
Technically you could but it would not really work all that well. The SDIs control flow into the reservoir and since these are an internal bypass the flow into the reservoir is less than what you would see with a traditional remote reservoir shock or coilover. So I am sure you would still see some benefit of the SDI reservoir but it would not be able to alter ride and handling as much as it would on something else.
Hi, does having a digressive valve mean less dampening on slow rock climbing sort of off-roading?
From what I have read and personally experienced with my 5100's digressive valved shock like the 5100's start off stiffer at the bottom of the stroke but get stiffer as the stroke increases. That may be good for more aggressive higher speed hitting big bumps ect.
@halseyknox digressive start stiff and get softer with more stroke (thus the term digressive).
So i do like a 5 mile dirt road for my daily drive It's not tough terrain is just dirt road. I got some bilstein but they are too stiff. What do u recommend for me for that terrain?

depends what kind of budget you're running with, typically a softer responding 2.5 shock, or an adjustable shock like the Dobinsons MRR or OME BP51 where you can adjust the compression/rebound for your load.
@@ShockSurplus would the bilstein 6112/ 5160 be a good for that?

Hi, I live in North east state which have heavily salted road during the winter, which shocks would you recommend?assuming I’m a weekend warrior.
The aluminum body is the best but most suspensions are coated to protect from the weather elements like Bilstein have a zinc coat.

Yep, hopefully this year on one of our IFS trucks

We're still getting our feet wet with their offerings, our Ranger will be getting their kit, and working on a Wrangler JL with their systems currently. We were sad to leave it out of this conversation, but didn't want to talk about shocks we had little experience with.
so, if a shock is able to be rebuilt then what is the average guy supposed to do while the vehicle is down for maintenance for say two weeks?
yeah thats the worst part of the service need, being down a vehicle. We're working on a set of demo shocks, but that's hard considering how many apps there are. What vehicle do you have? We sometimes have options to send so your vehicle isn't out of commission while a rebuild is happening
can we get bp51's on 2nd gen sequoias?
