    Dealing with a flat Earther is easy. Just take the flat Earther off, put on your spare Earther, and then see if Kwik Fit can repair your flat Earther or you need it replaced.

    I've invented a time machine. It can only go forward in time, to the future, so it is a one-way trip.
    The other tiny little limiting factor is that it operates at a ratio of 1:1.
    But It Works!

    • @bigdickpornsuperstar
      @bigdickpornsuperstar 7 років тому +15

      I set the controls on my machine to take me an hour into the future and an hour later there I am, an hour into the future.
      It seems works for any length of time you care to set it for. Adjust it for a day, and a day later, there you are... an entire day into the future!
      It truly is amazing.

    • @bigdickpornsuperstar

      But I've been afraid to push my luck too far.
      I don't know if I could go a hundred or more years into the future. The stresses might be too much to survive.

    • @bigdickpornsuperstar
      @bigdickpornsuperstar 7 років тому +12

      Every time I use it, it seems to sap the youth right out of me.

      Bill Nye is a lying FRAUD! He is NOT and NEVER WAS a
      "Scientist".
      He took engineering courses in college. That’s it. He is an
      ACTOR & COMEDIAN.
      He worked for Boeing as an engineer briefly and then he
      ended up on a late night talk show doing skits and characters and one was
      "The Science Guy". He was one of many pretend scientist characters
      but he was the only one that got a Disney show. He played other dorky
      characters but this bow tie wearing geek stuck...but he is an ACTOR and
      COMEDIAN by profession, not a "scientist".
      He has gone on record saying that anyone that disagrees with
      the official story of global warming should be ARRESTED AND JAILED. IN AMERICA.
      That should be a huge red flag and set off all kinds of alarms. He's just
      another puppet that the government parades out to shove the propaganda down
      your and your childrens' throats. Don't believe anything this jerk reads from a
      script someone else wrote.
      He spends his time on sets and in studios, NOT IN LABS AND
      NOT DOING SCIENCE. Very unlikely his tax return says "scientist" on
      it. He gets paid to LIE (act) and PRETENDS he is a science guy and his lab coat
      is simply a COSTUME. He is reading from a script someone else wrote. Grow up.
      Stop believing the global warming/climate change made up
      money making crap. Because that's what it is.

    I love the retro 90's Green Screen - very hip sir.

    • @BlackJar72
      @BlackJar72 7 років тому

      Green screens are actually more '70's through early '80's, the '90's was the age of Doom and the popularization the internet and green screens were dinosaurs by then ... but that's OK.

    • @Nexus2Eden
      @Nexus2Eden 7 років тому

      They were not, I was in college studying Electronic Intermedia in the 90's and was in HS in the 80's - the 'internet' didn't even become a real thing until the 2000's. And yes, technically green screen has been around for movie and television since the 80's, but that tech wasn't available to Joe Smoe until the late 90's. It used to take hours just to render digital photographs and video in a college lab in '97. But ok...whatever man.

    • @BlackJar72
      @BlackJar72 7 років тому +1

      Nexus2Eden I too was in college in the '90's and high-school in the '80's. I simply misunderstood what you meant by "green screens," since I still remember that term being used to refer to refer to the old monochrome monitors that were black with bright green pixels. I have to disagree about the internet though; it was not that useful in the early '90's, but started to come to its own in the mid '90's -- I remember it being quit good in the late '90's, and going down hill (clogged, cluttered, full of too much garbage) since the '90's. But the original point was a misunderstanding, different meaning of "green screen," I think we're both right about the kinds of green screens we were each talking about.

    • @Nexus2Eden
      @Nexus2Eden 7 років тому

      Funny, I was still posting to Bulletin Boards and using AOL in '95 - there wasn't any real 'social' media outside of AOL at the time - weren't you still using dial up? If I remember correctly pop-up ads were just starting to be a nuisance and just about everything was hypertext based no internet video. There wasn't even much happening as far as .gif and .jpegs and you were still spending $100's for a 60 MB hard drive. And there were no 'cell phones' except for companies that could afford $2,000 for a brick and pay $2.50 a minute to make calls. But sure...if you want to say the internet was happening I did have a $2,500 iBook with 128 MB of memory... using Netscape. But I'd hardly call it the community it became in the later 2000's.

    • @BlackJar72
      @BlackJar72 7 років тому

      In 1994 I had AOL, and that sucked since it was long distance. In 1995 we finally got a local ISP, but it was still dial-up, though I didn't seem bad by 1996. Once I moved away for graduate school I had high-speed through the universities LAN, starting 1997. Late 19998 I moved back off campus and returned to dial-up (except for a small comuputer lab), but I suppose with fewer images and such made it seem reasonably fast -- smaller files, so it seemed fast. I didn't have my own high-speed 'til 2006, though, and have never had a smart phone. To me a smart phone is basically just an alternate why to see the internet, and not as good as a desktop even if more portable, so I don't consider them.

    Sometimes I wonder if it's even helpful to engage in conversations with people who are so massively in denial about science and reality. All they're going to do is dig their heels in even deeper, google search that one thing that agrees with them out of tens of thousands of things that prove them wrong, and stick with their denial. You end up doing more damage talking to them than you do just dealing with the problem and ignoring them. In this case, the problem is politicians and the solution is to just replace them.

      well string theory (or rather m-theory) suggests 10 dimensions of space + time, that'd make time the 11th dimension ?

    • @Nexus2Eden
      @Nexus2Eden 7 років тому +4

      I'm sorry, I think I misunderstood your question. I thought you were asking if time was the fourth dimension or one of the fourth dimensions (as if there could be more than one). Time can be any dimensional number - it doesn't have to be 'The Fourth' per se. It is whichever one you choose, however it is customary in the context of Euclidean geometry or a Cartesian system to be the fourth defined dimension. But in any system with multiple dimensions such as in Bosonic string theory, spacetime is 26-dimensional, while superstring theory is 10-dimensional and supergravity theory 11-dimensional. Time is an n-th dimension where n can be any of the enumerated dimensions.

    Here is my issue: every time I hear Bill Nye talk, he always says that science is the best idea we ever had, and that he could prove things, but he rarely does. I think if we are to defeat religions, we ought to start acting more like a scientist and less like a preacher. I love Bill Nye, he is a smart guy, but I think that shaming people who do not agree with science is not going to get us where we want to be. We need to show the evidence in as much detail as necessary, and let them figure out for themselves that they are wrong.

      Rafael Ördög
      But Bill Nye is a science communicator. He is not here to prove things to you. He is here to let people know that we have a very good reliable method of figuring things out. That you should find out about it. To study the methods, evidence and reasoning behind our theories. To learn.
      _"I love Bill Nye, he is a smart guy, but I think that shaming people who do not agree with science is not going to get us where we want to be. We need to show the evidence in as much detail as necessary, and let them figure out for themselves that they are wrong."_
      We already did that.
      Creationists - ignoring Astronomy, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine, Mathematics, Geology, Metrology, basic definitions...
      Flat Earthers - ignoring Astronomy, Physics, Mathematics, Metrology, Geometry, Navigation...
      Any other who are in denial...
      They ignore anything just to stay in their fantasy world. They will never figure it out for themselves (at least not the majority).

    • @IvettOrdog
      @IvettOrdog 7 років тому +1

      Peter Jakubik > I get that, but if you believe in creationism, and someone attacks your world view with another world view, you are unlikely to listen at all. Even if you are undecided you are unlikely to listen if the claims made are hard to believe. And let's be honest, without much explanation and evidence presented in excruciating detail evolution is quite hard to wrap your head around, especially if you have a world view that contradicts it. All it does is it backfires. To get someone to read up on science, start learning about science, you first need to get them to trust you, and it's pretty hard if you run a full on attack on what they see as a definition of who they are.

    • @IvettOrdog
      @IvettOrdog 7 років тому +2

      :ToggleSwitch: I think you are being naive in thinking that technology will change peoples minds about these topics. I think it's just the way around. People do not understand how technology works. They have no idea about how a GPS works, let alone that the fact that their GPS works is implicitly proving Einsteins theories millions of times over every day. Similarly the more advanced these technologies get, the more out of touch they will be with the average people, they will just see it as a piece of miracle making machines that "no body knows" how it works, but they can rely on it non the less. Bill, you are awesome, but could you please stop shilling your channel as an "answer" to questions? If we want more critical thinking and such, the answer isn't "WATCH THIS UA-cam CHANNEL!" it's "we need to stop teaching 'intelligent design' and creationism next to evolution." "We need to teach the scientific method, and teach kids to know that science is the best understanding of the universe." "Encourage curiosity and testing." etc. AND YOU KNOW THIS. If you'd stop the shilling and promote the facts more, I'd watch more, and I'd encourage everyone I know to watch. YOU DON'T NEED TO SHILL. Good science will win the day, if you promote GOOD SCIENCE more than your show. Please. You never said on "Bill Nye the Science Guy" to "GET MORE PEOPLE TO WATCH THIS SHOW!" You just stated facts; science. Please go back to that.

    Bill Nye and his passed down tradition of wearing bow ties is the reason I wear them. I went to a catholic high school where we had to wear ties and I always got compliments on them. I'm 34 and only wear ties at weddings or funerals since I'm a professional film prop restoration artist and previously worked an spfx make up artist and technician in Hollywood before opening my own studio north of Boston. I wish I had a chance to wear them more often.

    So much respect for this man, a role model growing up. Bill got me interested in science, while I'm only working in applied science, the science is the part I love. I work with HVACR systems, and it helps to know the science behind it, not just the installation, the troubleshooting and, the numbers. Understanding the science and why and how it works makes the job so much easier and so much more interesting. I Love my job, and love to explain how it works. I've talked to so many people that think an HVAC system is always an open system, a vent blowing air, in from outside and, then cooling the air coming in, while sometimes that's true, the HVAC system in you're home is completely closed unless you want outside air, to avoid sick house syndrome. (SBS (sick house, or building syndrome. The gasses that are put off by you're carpet, paint, drywall, insulation, etc. can actually make you sick. in a closed HVAC system the only time these gasses can be vented, is when you open you;r door or windows. (don't do it too often though especially on a humid day, it can cause mold to form in your home.) happens when the stale air in your house actually makes you feel sick, Get some fresh air guys! it helps with depression, and can help you're overall health!) I love explaining how it really works because I love the reactions, when people are learning and are interested in the topic you are talking about.
    HVACR or HVAC is Heating, Ventilation, Air conditioning, and refrigeration. I have to explain that sometimes too but, its cool because sometimes people think you're a rocket scientist, until they realize you're just a heating and cooling guy lol

    Keep up the great work Bill. Keep people interested in the real, provable, observable facts. I think the intelligent (or, at least, the reasonable) underestimated the power and numbers of the ignorant, and as a result the world got a little...disappointing.
    All we can do is keep talking, stick to the science, and have some hope in humanity that more people will realize that reason and critical thinking are not luxuries in quality thought, but rather necessities.
    Keep talking. Keep stating the facts. Drown out the noise of prejudice, bias, cowardice, and ignorance.
    You, and others like you, are the most important weapon we have in halting this new age of ignorance. If I thought there was a god, I would ask him to bless you all. In absence of that: live long and prosper. Lets get this world heading in the right direction again.

    i go to many comment boards to communicate this message, and i hope you all hear me here. Have empathy for those who deny truth. some people are just jerks, it's true, but in a world with this much data available, and with such incredibly complex scientific discoveries to be revealed, the work we need to do is clear. be reasonable, listen to others well, and educate yourself as well as be educated by experts. i'm glad to see the trolling is at a minimum on this board, but please be wary of words like "moron", "foolish", and "idiot". we choose to be moral, and ethical; we can choose to be open minded and inclusive while still being rational and standing up for sound science and truth. good luck everyone!

    In response to encouragement of critical thinking, I suggest we implement the escape room approach to scholastic testing of all levels. I previously was a room designer and don't see why we can't just base the puzzles, riddles and clues on the material covered in the classroom. "You say you studied? Lock yourself into a room with fun games to figure your way out and prove it." Students can even compare how long it took them to get out, if they did at all.

    well, talking about the question where the answer ends at 2:52. you can look back in time, but not travel there. because of the speed at which light travels through space when you see (for instance) a star, you are in fact looking back in time. and depending how far away the stra is you could be looking at something that has long since died and is no longer there. Just something to think about if you didn't already know. The next question I feel is very important. I think the best thing you can do is to keep yourself informed, and tell that information to your children. Bill is right in saying that you should watch these episodes, but inform yourself, question everything, know the facts. and the most important thing is to tell your children the same. don't just accept what they hear, question everything, and always strive for the truth... it's getting harder and harder to find, so we as parents must show them how.

    I go back in time at least twice a year. For instance, I leave Tokyo Haneda airport at 00:05 in the middle of the night on January 1st (it's only 5 minutes old) and I arrive at the San Francisco airport on December 31st at 6:00 pm. Yes that meets the definition of going back in time, doesn't it? I can celebrate New Years twice.

  • @The10thManRules
    @The10thManRules 7 років тому

    Hey Bill, I got this...ahem...
    The 5 Steps to Critical Thinking:
    In general, critical thinking refers to actively questioning statements rather than blindly accepting them.
    1. The critical thinker is flexible yet maintains an attitude of healthy skepticism.
    Critical thinkers are open to new information, ideas, and claims. They genuinely consider alternative explanations and possibilities. However, this open-mindedness is tempered by a healthy sense of skepticism (Hyman, 2007). The critical thinker consistently asks, “What evidence supports this claim?”
    2. The critical thinker scrutinizes the evidence before drawing conclusions.
    Critical thinkers strive to weigh all the available evidence before arriving at conclusions. And, in evaluating evidence, critical thinkers distinguish between empirical evidence versus opinions based on feelings or personal experience.
    3. The critical thinker can assume other perspectives.
    Critical thinkers are not imprisoned by their own points of view. Nor are they limited in the capacity to imagine life experiences and perspectives that are fundamentally difference from their own. Rather, the critical thinker strives to understand and evaluate issues from many different angles.
    4. The critical thinker is aware of biases and assumptions.
    In evaluating evidence and ideas, critical thinkers strive to identify the biases and assumptions that are inherent in any argument (Riggio & Halpern, 2006). Critical thinkers also try to identify and minimize the influence of their own biases.
    5. The critical thinker engages in reflective thinking.
    Critical thinkers avoid knee-jerk responses. Instead, critical thinkers are reflective. Most complex issues are unlikely to have a simple solution. Therefore, critical thinkers resist the temptation to sidestep complexity by boiling an issue down to an either/or, yes/no kind of proposition. Instead, the critical thinkers expects and accepts complexity (Halpern, 2007).
    Critical thinking is not a single skill, but rather a set of attitudes and thinking skills. As is true with any set of skills, you can get better at these skills with practice.
    In a nut shell, critical thinking is the active process of minimizing preconceptions and biases while evaluating evidence, determining the conclusions that can be reasonably be drawn from evidence, and considering alternative explanations for research findings or other phenomena.
    CRITICAL THINKING QUESTIONS
    >Why might other people want to discourage you from critical thinking?
    >In what situations is it probably most difficult or challenging for you to exercise critical thinking skills? Why?
    > What can you do or say to encourage others to use critical thinking in evaluating questionable claims or assertions?

    Everybody does part of the science procedure every day. New data: Raining. Hypothesis says: Rain coat or umbrella. You get observation and what your hypothesis tells you. Since your hypothesis works for you the most of the time you assume that it will work all the time. But the farther you get from your personal experience, the higher the odds that you have it wrong. So you *must* test instead of thinking 'well I don't know anything about that but this is how it seems to me so I'm good'. If we can get people past the pesky verify part we will be so much better off. Also 'The Idea Below'. Beautiful :-)
