"Universe is under no obligation to make sense to me"... 😍😍😍
To anyone*
Wanna make a difference? Tell that to all the youth.
Have u heard it for the first time?😁
Ian that also Quote of Einstein's....
Hahaha
"How was the cake?"
"What's important is that we had fun." 😂👍
HAHAHAHA
Mr. Tyson sets an exemplary example of driving happiness out of small things.
Watch it Ro and Neil! Y'all are taken! lol
Love Neil and Chuck...best episodes are with Chuck, he cracks me up😂
Major props for the Honeymooners reference! My best friend and I used to watch re-runs of that show all the time when we were teens (we're in our 40s now). It's comedy gold!
the fact Neil stans Ro is making my year brighter already
I didnt think it'd ever happen, but it did! You got ro's 2nd question itself wrong, Neil! she meant habitable, in the goldilocls zone, the closest planet that we could possibly go to.........
By far one of my fav. show on youtube,
Re: 5:00 - Neil... she didn't mean closest planet period, she meant closest /like/ Earth (possibly inhabitable) so she could actually go there
Holy crap the 60fps of this video shook me when chuck and neil kept talking with their hands!!! I love how they do but oh man the FPS and quality gave my eyes a workout
Space Elevator Music! 😆.
Orion is MY favorite constellation, too!
🤜💥🤛
Edit; BTW, Drink every time Neil says, "So...." 😂
(Actually you probably shouldn't lol unless you don't have anything to do later 😉)
You’re right! It’s his favourite word. I always thought that would be a cool (but expensive) drinking game. 👍
DS9 all the way.
Neil's favorite Original Series show was The Corbomite Maneuver.
I'd have to agree and disagree with you. Corbomite - yes👍👍👍. But his transmission on the broken secure channel was he was activating the "corbomite device". The episode "The Deadly Years" and the attackers were the Romulans, who ran away...
Episode.
Am I the only one that interpreted her 3rd question to mean closest exoplanet to earth? To which can we even find planets of earths size yet?
Yes we can! These are 2 diffrent ways we can find other planets.
The closest discoverd planet outside our solar system is "proxima centauri b" I Believe. That's 4,25 light years away and the shortest time to get there with current technology is 80 years.
@@irohwho3247 you mean 80,000 years 😂
TARDIS From Doctor who was made to explore too. Whovians assemble!!
Thank you for one more funny and informative video. You guys are awesome! 🥰
"I was quoted on Star Trek" is probably the biggest brag an Astrophysicist can bring up. :D
But it's Neil, and he deserves to be quoted
10:30 - _Errata_ The concept of the geostationary communications satellite was first proposed by Arthur C. Clarke, along with Vahid K. Sanadi building on work by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky.
... and 12:00 - "Bucky Balls" or 'buckminsterfullerene' to give it the full name :0)
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fullerene
I grew up watching star trek. The ideals have always stuck with me. I'm in my 60s. Love all of the series...But Picard💜😊
Very fun, and funny episode, I would watch these on the regular. :) lol
Neil, do you use or recommend any star/constellation finder apps? Thanks for all your content. I’m a big fan. Cheers:)
Universe is under no obligation to make sense to you ... Probably the most badass quote by Neil and I use it a lot 😆
Let them eat cake. Great episode guys!!! I can listen to you guys talk Trek all day!
For me the first star trek i ever saw was The Enterprise(series) and i fell in love with it and watched them all.
Yassss, two of my favorite persons in one video
I've always loved Ro. My daughter makes me watch her.
Before quoting himself: "And, I'm paraphrasing..." How do you paraphrase a self-quote? ;-) One of my favorite episodes!
She was asking which planet outside our solar system is the closest to us where it might be habitable for life-forms.
Love listening to Neil!
These two are so funny ; Dr Tyson makes learning fun .
22:20 "So i don't mean to brag but that's right!" someone make that into a meme!
extremely entertaining!!
Hilarious!! Love u guys! Wish I was able to fund to ur pateron! I'm here watching though! Keep up the hard work with the show y'all are such inspirations!!
QUESTION~
How many AXIS of freedom would a globe need to have for when you spin it and point your finger from one stationary point you would be able to land on any country? And secondly whats the minimum degrees you would need to still achieve this (if you're allowed to choose the STATIONARY point)?
Haha XENA would be sick up there !! God you brought back memories! Love space and both you gentlemen!!
Orion or (Aljawzaa) as it's called in Arabic originally. And smartly enough Arab named its stars:
Betelgeuse = Originally Ibtt el-Jawzaa = the armpit of the Giant
Regel = Originally Regel el-Jawzaa = the leg/foot of the Giant
Saiph = Originally el-Saif/el-Saiph = the sword of the Giant
Mintaka = Originally al-Mantiqa = The area/the belt (clothe)
Alnitak = Originally al-Nitaq = the Belt
Alnilam = Originally al-Nailam = the string of pearls
It is my favorite constellation and it also has my favorite Horse Head Nebula :)
You need to go on her show again! Do it as book promotion!
Orion is my favorite too. I've unfortunately missed getting to see the Orion nebula on 2 separate occasions while visiting the Griffith Observatory in CA. I hope to manage it some day. As for an update to Orion without having to change to image, I propose Orion the LARPer.
I also like Cygnus, but mostly because of the Rush song. ;-)
How about a Space conveyor belt. Still a cable driven elevator but with a lot of elevator platforms going up & down constantly to deliver stuff/people that make a weeks long trip more effective.
But, we do have the materials to build a Lunar Elevator, a space elevator installed on the Moon. In regards to being stuck on a space elevator, I think it was Kim Stanley Robinson that wrote a series of books about colonizing Mars where that happened.
an elevator to the moon wouldn't work. whatever the elevator goes to from earth would have to be in a perfect geo-stationary orbit. if the orbit was too short, long, or at the wrong inclination, the elevator cable would break due to whatever it's attached to at either end moving at different speeds/directions. and that would be very very very bad. depending on where it snapped, imagine a cable many thousands of miles long falling back to earth...
Also UV light breaks down polymers, too. So anything made of rubber or plastic that's exposed to the sunlight on Mars will end up crumbling into dust a lot sooner than it would on earth. So seals would need to be covered and forget about using plastics to keep the weight down (at least in the case of ones that would be exposed to the sun)...
Neil the new overwatch hero also uses that quote and I can't help but hear your voice every time he says it
Fyi Star trek next generation and Deep space 9 were the best.
Neil, if you loved the original series, you should read the books set in that time period. They expanded on the concepts in every direction. I particularly loved the underlying humor.
Renaming the Constellations, make it a worldwide contest for middle school age contestants is a great idea. Jennifer. Decatur GA USA
I have a question Neil!!
Will the new season of Cosmos that was supposed to air this past Spring be out soon??
It´s being delayed because of some accusations to Neil Degrasse Tyson of sexual harassment that are complete bullshit if you look at them, just trying to get money from him but the case is being investigated anyways and the Cosmos part 2 series will not be aired until the investigation concludes, it´s ridiculous.
Andres Turco the investigation concluded 5 MONTHS AGO. This was in march, "The investigation is complete, and we are moving forward with both StarTalk and Cosmos," Fox and Nat Geo said Friday in a statement. "StarTalk will return to the air with the remaining 13 episodes in April on National Geographic, and both Fox and National Geographic are committed to finding an air date for Cosmos. There will be no further comment."
Very frustrating.
@@kryptkeeper457 Wow, then I don't know what's happening! I hope they'll release it this year!
Andres Turco hope so too. Don’t know what they’re waiting on. Maybe for the public’s memory to fade a bit more...
Chuck! You gots me weak! 🤣
About the space elevators; Obayashi corp. has actual plans to finish a construction by 2050 - assuming the carbon cabling Tyson mentions is possible within their schedule.
That Star Trek episode of TOS is called "The Carbonite Maneuver".
With a very young Clint Howard. Ron Howard's younger brother.
They better make the space elevator damn comfortable if you MAY get stuck. Like I'm talking fulling stocked with weed food and alcohol. Only to open if it gets stuck.
Call me a misanthrope, but you KNOW that someone's going to join the million mile high club, cameras or no cameras.
Everyone gangsta till you get stuck midway in the space elevator
And what episode of Star Trek was that ?
20:53 I take great offense in that. I'm 33 years of age and have watched TOS twice. One of my favorite shows. I rarely rewatch anything.
i think you missed the question about the closest "earth" like planet..and answered about the closest planet venus instead .
if im correct the closest exoplanet within the habitable zone is "proxima centauri b " some 4.22 light years from our sun .. so we're not getting there any time soon... because low tech and our current understanding of physics and the nature of the "fabric"of spacetime
You guys hovered very close to the idea of the Minecraft constelation
I spent my childhood in a trekkie household. We had a fluffy, white Shih Tsu named "Tribble." :P
Did you have trouble with her?
I agree...update the constellations ... im in
Hey Neil just thought you should know, that no man's sky has also quoted you. When you die that quote will appear sometimes
Xena Should still be on TV. Has Lucy Lawless seen this?
A missed episode omg I figured out about nerdy nummies from my friend early on in HS
YEAAAAAHHHHHH, SCIENCE
When Chuck quotes Eddie Murphy Delirious (which was using the honeymooners as an influence for a joke) and I don’t think Neil got it. Or he did and tried to pull it back. XD
I would see another serious obstacle to the existence of such a space elevator; space debris of terrestrial origin and meteorites. Unless it is able to "dodge" an object traveling at very high speed (maybe some kind of modular structure with elements that can independently "slide" horizontally within some range? ), the risk of it being hit would be too high in a long term.
Rosanna will always be Husky's rich and successful girlfriend to me ))
Probably one of the few people who knew him first, but Ro is admirable for turning cooking & baking into a multi-million dollar UA-cam channel, childrens' brand, and book series.
My nephews made up some last summer, a lot of Pokemon.
When will Cosmos season air. Please Neil we need it
FOX Executives are still deciding a date for it, maybe they deciding not too long ago but waiting to release information. I'm sure we'll hear news in the next 4 months. I wouldn't expect it for about another year.
20:09 There is a logic to poker though, within game theory. Most of all, poker is a game of information, and you want your opponents to pay as much as possible for every little piece of information they get out of you. More generally, you just have to know what game you all are playing; I've even heard it said, that the reason the Cuba crisis escalated as far as it did, was that the USSR was playing chess, against the US playing poker.
Not sure what Chuck meant there at the beginning with the cake part :D
Star Gang ✨✨
There is a book called "Red Shirts" you should read.
I love Whoopi Goldberg in the Next Generation and her story about her as young girl seeing Uhura for the first time in the first show. I am a fan of both series . And I saw the first movie in the theatre in 1980 or so. The TV series had better drama between the people in it though, the first series was great that way.
How hard would it be to cool down Venus?
Libra the pants salesman.
Calmelarodopolis the hedge fund manager
Auriga the Wellness counceler
orion looks like - 3 stars close together and some other stars also is there
and M42 nebula is there
The ferengi is one of the best things to ever happen to star trek. unlike all the others, Star Trek DS9 never dropped in quality. it got better.
Always enjoy these nerdy nice to know facts, accompanied by humor thus creating a nice synergy of education and fun.
Venus as vaporizing as it is, gets rather rarely mentioned as celestial body which might have harbored life or even civilization compared to Mars.
To get more familiar with terms like "Space Elevator" 08:16 I would like to recommend reading Battle Angel Alita graphic novels aka mangas. Honestly started reading from the second series "Last Order" myself and the very first place I learned about things like Schroedingers cat, the hostile to humans surface on the other planets, ideas like giant solar satellites/thermal mirrors to heat mars (which Elon Musk recently tweeted as an idea), including many other topics which can be related to science or at least general knowledge. Not to spoil too much, but various ideas of how Venus could be colonized and develop a different sentient species is also included amongst others.
Also the live action movie adaption was very well received and I found no valid reason for my anxieties about the "anime eyes" when watching the movie and barely noticing the difference.
Neil, Love watching you anyway on youtube.. watching the nerdy nummies now.. curious, and hope you see this and will answer back to me. since you like the original star trek, what do you think of the reboot movies of original characters?
Hehe. I think voyager is great too.
Would having the elevator anchored to the earth and a heavy weight at the top provide enough centrifugal force to alleviate some of the stress of the weight pulling it down?
Jim Myers - the "heavy weight at the top" has to be much, much further out than geosynchronous so the center of gravity of the system, the sum all the cable and everything attached to the cable, is out past geosynchronous orbit so the cable is pulled tight - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Space_elevator
@@robertgraybeard3750 Thanks
@@jimmyers4890 - the space elevator for Earth, right now, will have to be made from unobtainium. The numbers look good for the Moon or Mars . . . Kevlar would be light and strong enough . . . just have to make each fiber astronomically long.
Wow. I was like...
I know who that girl is. I know that guy too!
Holy 💩!!
The foam on that Shure is driving me crazy
when she said closest planet I think she was asking closest habitable planet. we all learn about the 8 in our solar system in elementary school but the gliese and kepler etc planets are unknown to most
Ro's 3rd question, I dont think she meant planets in our solar system. She said "earth like planet".
12:18 YES YOU DO ITS CALLED GRAPHINE
EDIT: you actually referenced it lmao nvm. its carbon like diamond and charcoal
What good is a shield against a charging bull?
Orion the predator drone - nearly peed myself!!!!
Omg i love her
Twilight Zone, and the original "Outer Limits" had morals as well.
I agree, it's time to rename the constellations. Starting with C3P0.
Imagine Neil hanging out with Michael (from Vsauce).
yes
sounds like an argument and them correcting eachother every other sentence
Where are we with resonance transportation? (teleportation, via frequency replicators)
Plasma Physicists in Japan were able quantum entangle two atoms a few femtometers apart and transport them interchangeably. We're about as far in teleportation research as people with horse/carriages we're with the firsr automobile...
@@gokurocks9 is that rumor or classified information?

Ok you may not read this NGT...but for others...I have always had confusion in understanding how a planet such as Jupiter is classified as a GAS planet.
Surely due to the size of this planet, there must be a point where due to gravitational pressures, the gas becomes a liquid state and further on there has to be a solid state of the make-up of this giant.
I seriously cannot imagine that at the core of Jupiter you will find it's make-up to be in a gaseous state....please explain....Cheers.
Am I the only one who laughed when he said cooked a cake instead baked?
Neil: Orion is a guy with a shield.
Neil: I want to rename the constellations
Neil: * mentions random superheroes
Chuck: * wearing Captain America shirt
Neil and Chuck: * not stating the obvious :)
Speaking of carbon fiber nano tubes... Would venus not be a much better primary goal than mars? With it's low gravity, atmosphere dense with carbon, high pressure and temperature. A facility to produce much longer nanotubes could be established to make stronger materials, and possibly even enable us to use them in battery storage.... Then we could use forms of electrical propulsion, such as ion and hall effect thrusters to reach mars or mine asteroids in a fraction of the time. 😅
I see that copy of Gravitation you have there. 🌝
It's SERIES not SEASON. Each series spanned multiple seasons. I thought Neil was smarter than that.
Also 17:20 Scotty wore a read shirt and didn't die.
So let me guess, the cake was in the image of Neil. (Just checked) Wrong episode. LOL
The fastest elevator in the world travels at 47 mph. If you want to go up 23000 miles, it would take you 489.36 hours.
Update the constellations because city people can only see the bright stars.
Wake and bake with Neil deGrass Tyson ✌✊🏽
