Well, actually… astronauts as we know them may very well vary widely across many universes in our multiverse. Meaning, in one alien planet, ice cream sandwiches may be very normal to them. While on the other hand, their astronauts eat fancy Italian food. Meaning, on a cosmic scale, it may very well be meaningless whether ice cream is astronaut food or not.
Key's acting in this skit was awesome. Every little glance, facial expression, hand gesture, twitch. Chef kiss.

Shout out to the production team that cast a real blue light on his face when he was holding that virtual galaxy. That’s attention to detail.
I think you're giving them too much credit and it's just the alpha (the opacity) of the effect that gives the illusion of coloring the light on his face. It's looks that way because the effect is itself well done with subtle fade into transparency. It looks to me like a happy accident.
Actually reflections and secondary illumination is built into the special effects software.

I didn’t know it was coming, but I knew about it very quickly after it aired. People asked if I liked it or didn’t like it. I don’t invest emotions in the creativity of artists. I just sort of celebrate the fact that it exists at all, that artists have selected science to be their muse, so that’s what I celebrate. But I thought it was hilarious. What they didn’t know is my wife actually has a PhD in mathematical physics, so she’s less accommodating of my “Cosmos"-ian answers.
