Trying to FIX a Faulty Pulsar Chronograph Quartz Watch

  • Hi, in this 'trying to fix' video I attempt to repair a Pulsar Chronograph quartz watch. The movement is a 7T62A and is made by Seiko. The original fault was that the watch would stop, the stopwatch did not center at 12 (0 seconds) and the date would not change over at midnight (or at any time).
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    I am glad there is someone who is actually working on Quartz watches, most of the other watch restorers only work on mechanical ones. Quartz are more simple yet some are complex and it is nice to see someone in action going through the motions and I am learning from it....and as they say, a man's got to know his limitations !

      Haha...Actually I had a faulty kidney back in the late 1990s, early 2000s. It used to swell up to the size of a small football and I remember thinking if only I could get a tube in there I could have drained it to release the pressure. Sidney (my little nickname for it) was removed in 2003 and it has been 'happy days' ever since :-)

      @@drgusman Nooo, not at all. I found the comment funny. My kidney was the butt of many a joke back in the day. Because the kidney had problems with volume, when I was going out partying I could only drink neat spirits so I used to drink double Whisky with just one ice cube, not 2 or 3 just the one ice cube. So on a nice hot summers day while my friends were having ice cold lagers I was sipping on nearly neat whisky like an old man :-)

    Pulsar (and Lorus) are part of Seiko. Pulsar watches are excellent - Seiko build with quartz movements (which I prefer as they're more accurate). Really nice, well made pieces.
    Shouldn't really dismiss them as "cheap" - a good Japanese movement is every bit as good as anything the Swiss produce, and Seiko make some very expensive and first-class watches. Pulsar offer some of the best value products out there - not Flash, they just work and are well made. The Sony or Panasonic of watches.

    Lots of twists and turns in this one! One minute I thought we were there, then you had to take it all back to bits again! These do quite frankly look like a nightmare to work on lol! I don't know how you have the patience to work on something where the parts are so very small!!!! I wanted to do a few things to my watch but not sure yet... It needs a new glass, a couple of the buttons could do with replacing too (or gold plating again). Just not sure if I dare go inside there... Great video!

      You can do it Chris, do a video on it :-) It is a nightmare but that is half the fun. Get a cheap watchmakers kit from eBay. In fact a gold plating video would also be fun, you can get kits for £70ish. I want to see you searching for hours for a watch screw that flicked into the carpet somewhere, or worse still onto one of your cats!!!!!!!!!! In the past I have been so desperate to find flicked off parts that I start looking in places that they physically couldn't fly to :-)

    Vince you like a challenge pal! Those are notoriously hard. Not something even I’d tackle so fair play And you did well considering . Nice to see the movement holder so hopefully that made things better. So you use any magnification?
    Pulsar is owned by Seiko same as Lorus so you will always see some common parts.
    Enjoyed this one and man you upload schedule is constant! Wish I could knock them out as fast as you ! Been doing one all week on a quartz Omega but as it still has issues so I can’t complete the video yet.
    Keep up the good work . I am really enjoying your channel and tend to have them on in the background while I am at my bench.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 років тому

      Thanks Mike, that means a lot to me...nice one :-) The movement holder was a cheapy from eBay and on this movement I struggled with it as it wanted to keep lifting out. I think it might be because the movement is quite narrow and plastic. I am hoping when I do the Seiko automatics that it will grip better. They were only a few pound for 2 different sizes so if I have to get the proper version then I haven't lost much. I do UA-cam full time now so luckily I can get through more videos than when I was trying to fit them in at the weekends and evenings.....also I probably work twice as much hours as the average working week!!!!! Looking forward to the Quartz Omega vid, is it a late 70s early 80s Seamaster???

    • @Mymatevince

      For the magnification I use the macro (zoom) feature of my video camera and connect the output of the camera to a smallish TV so I can see a nice big image rather than looking at the small viewfinder :-) It seems to work OK so I may not need a microscope just yet :-)

    Hi there, great video! As mentioned in another comment, the issue with the day change wheel is pretty common on the Seiko 7Txx series of chronographs. It usually breaks when you try to set the time between 10PM and 2AM. Unfortunately the only solution is to replace that wheel.

    I'm almost inspired to take my own watches apart now too tbh. I've got one that a few of the dial markers popped off on, so I don't think I would need to screw around with the gears and such. I think they need a tiny bit of glue too, I've had to get that watch in several times just cause of it, and it's always the same markers that come off.

  • @kevinchua464

    Alright Vince, great vid mate, your patience is off the scale... You've probably realised this since, but you can buy seconds hands separately on eBay etc, you just need to find one the right length and style, but that Pulsar one looked pretty generic, so should be possible and you'll have the chronograph working for a couple of quid. Also when I'm disassembling things with parts that look very similar I just make a tiny mark on each piece using a set of very fine tip permanent marker in different colours. It really helps and is a cheap but effective solution to keeping track of fiddly similar parts.... Keep up the good work.

    Decided to give this another watch as I did enjoy this particular one. Despite the watch community, Pulsar, Lorus, Alba and Seiko share common movements and are even made on the same factory lines for example the Seiko 7T92 chronograph which is the successor to the 7T62 you have there, can be found as a YM92A with Epson markings or YM92 for Pulsar, Alba and Lorus but Seiko's fetch far more than its three sub brands. Today I am spending getting ready to recase both my Seiko 7009's having bought from a Dutch watch breakers a pair of very nice condition cases to replace the two quite worn ones on my two 7009's, have another coming in from Russia I paid £7 for and all that needs apparently is a new crown and stem and a crystal both easy to source and cheap.

    My 4th Sekonda I got is an old Safari which keeps perfect time right until it gets to 11:50 and it stops in the exact same place, have given it a clean and its ticking but unless I move the time to past 12 the second hand just quivers. Have put in good batteries but to no avail, given a good air dusting and some drops of oil but just goes perfectly until 11:50 then stops lol. The Sekonda I am wearing at the moment I got off ebay for a few pounds, the chronograph was all over the place and I reset the watch, bit of a blow over the movement from my compressor, now keeping abs spot on time and the chrono resets and working properly and the second 24 hours dial also reporting correct time since resetting using the same method as the Pulsar there. I like the Safari as they were in vogue once upon a time amongst servicemen back in the day usually fitted to a cover strap and loved for the sheer dogged reliability and waterproof plus the "action man" look of it (apparently the 100m water proof ones are still sought today) One annoyance is the luminous on the chrono is very short lived whereas the luminous on the Safari is very bright, am thinking of getting some of that paste you showcased a few vids back as its annoying that it retains no luminescence lol

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 років тому

      Yeah, I just picked up some cheap lume paste on eBay and I think it worked out ok. I would be careful where you mix it up though as I used the black mixing tray and I think some of the paint came off making the lume darker than it should be. Doesn't look that nice bright colour in the day. Fine at night though :-)

    I have the same Pulsar watch, the dial is white though. Bought it back in 2008. If my memory doesn't fail me, the original battery ran for three years before I replaced it for the first time. Then some oddities came into play-I had to replace number 2 and number 3 in one year's time. My guess is neither of them had enough capacity as the movement is kind of heavy duty one, and they were Renata equivalent (sort of). I didn't wear the watch for a while and am going to give it a new life after tidying and cleaning. Also this time I will insert a Renata 399. No equivalents.

    Looks like some battery acid leak in the battery well, the weak spot with the Seiko/Epson T-series of movements is where the circuit corrodes on a small tab which makes contact on the terminal in the battery well, any battery leak destroys the small tab rendering the circuit board useless.
    I am sure they were designed as throw away movements and had built in obsolescence, Seiko just replace them if you send a watch in for a service.
    I have worked on many T-series movements and fixed a few and killed a few, as long as you learn in the process all is good.
    You should do more watch related videos as you have the skills to progress, you could ask people to donate broken watches, repair them and then auction them to fund the growth of your channel.

    Generally if there is any corrosion in these it's better to fit a new movement, I have several dead movements where the battery has leaked and has eaten parts of the circuit away, otherwise it's good practice.
    Yes with unfamiliar movements take lots of photos.
    Removing the hands, use proper hand levers, not a spring bar tool, you can actually break the pinion the hand rides on with too much sideways force, hand levers look like a pair of tiny crowbars, place the plastic like you have been doing over the dial, place the hand levers either side of the hands and very gently lever up.
    Yes the wheel trains for each section is a bit different, this where the pdf file should show what goes where, of course a real good idea as you dismantle something like this don't mix the parts up, keep each section separate.
    as far as complexity this is probably more fiddly as you have stepper motors to reset each section, an auto chronograph is more complex since you need clutches and reset levers as well as the auto wind and the calendar, you can buy a Chinese 7750 clone for reasonable cost to practice on.

      Wow, great information, thanks for passing it on. I am going to have a look on UA-cam to see if there are any videos on an auto chronograph as I would like to see what these clutches look like. I will see if I can buy some hand levers before my next watch video, the kit I have has some fancy looking hand remover but it seems flimsy :-)

    • @dAzFivefoUr
      @dAzFivefoUr 5 років тому +1

      @@Mymatevince have a look at Watch Repair Channel, the hand removers he uses are a bit big for my liking,
      Hand removers come in the Presto version which work as long as to protect the dial, but can be hard to use if the hand is close to the dial, there is a plunger type that look like an automated version of crowbar hand levers
      Then you have the crowbar hand levers, these have fine tips ànd can usually get under and lift the smallest hands, the ones I use all the time have 2.5mm wide tips, and for Pocket watches I use the larger levers with 4mm wide tips

    FYI - I got *NO* UA-cam notifications in email for this video. That sucks. I happen to be lurking my sub feed and saw it though.

    • @therealgrizzly
      @therealgrizzly 5 років тому

      Copying an earlier UA-cam comment off mine about this.
      Bell and tell youtube too send email updates works pretty good.
      And even when youtube email about a new video there is 50/50 if they show up in subscribed list or not so WAAAAAYYY better then only sublist.
      Then there are 2 channels that i get an email about half the time a new video is uploaded and then the email and sub list is the same.
      The runaround i have done for this is use RSS feed for those channels and then every video do show up.
      How to here www.addictivetips.com/web/export-youtube-subscriptions/
      For me the export too opml does not show up so i had too click on this link and scroll down too the bottom end export too opml is there.
      ua-cam.com/users/subscription_manager
      This is the easiest way too add an UA-cam rss feed you can add them one at a time by going too page source and search for channel id then copy that to the end of this string ua-cam.com/users/feedsvideos.xml?channel_id= Then copy that in to the rss reader.
      For example Vince rss feed would be ua-cam.com/users/feedsvideos.xml?channel_id=UChY9Cgv-iyPDvf1Bkyx20OQ
      To me it´s faster to just import all channels into the rss reader then delete any you do not want then going the one by one way.
      Then you can use some rss reader and import all channels there
      feedly and innoreader is pretty popular and they have an android app, no ide about ios.
      I however use quiterss.org/ or RSSOwl is also a good choice, i do not use anything on mobile/tablet since i never watch any youtube there.
      After i went the RSS way about a year ago i´m much happier and have as far as i know not missed anything uploaded on the many channels i follow/sub too.
      I do however still sub on all channels just never use any of youtubes horribly broken "sub functions"

    For the white gears: next time use a little marker pen and write a number (or some different marks) on them BEFORE removing them. You will have more success then. :-) Use a marker which can be cleaned with IPA

    You saw that this is *not the right type of battery for this watch,* right? It is so small that when you removed the back of the watch, it was ready to pop out 6:05. *Also,* by comparing the battery you removed with the new ones 6:18, the new ones are bigger, so you obviously used the correct type of battery.

    My Slava tank quartz a big big ol' Soviet bruiser of a piece is finicky... if I don't wear it, over a day or two it loses a few minutes as it stops and stutters but if I wear it no loss happens mainly because my hand movement keeps it moving and it doesn't lose a second when wearing :S

      Sorry to say but it wouldn't work. Seiko/Pulsar/Lorus made their own proprietary Crystal called "Hardlex" (a toughened glass that was alleged to be scratch resistant and shatterproof). It is a real bugger to polish and would involve LOTS of diamond paste, LOTS of hours, and a dremel. The headlight kit would work great on acrylic plastic lenses though. 😁

    • @Mymatevince

      Yeah I think the problem was I had 3 very similar white gears and they were mixed up. If I had marked them or taken detailed pictures then this watch would have been working properly at that stage in the video. Hopefully next time I will not make the same mistake :-)
