Found OMEGA WATCH buried in STONE for 25 YEARS

  • This watch was found by a concrete skatepark builder named Chris and sent into the channel by John the owner of the company. Is it real, is it quartz? Will it work again?
    I am always intrigued by the restoration channels on UA-cam seemingly finding buried items and with a little wash they come up new again, will this come up like new again after being buried in stone for 25 years?
    Let's find out.

    The reason why this watch didn’t turn out looking brand new like those other UA-cam videos is because you forgot to use that special mayonnaise that they use on the dials. It always seems to work. Lol. Great video mate

    • @mitchd949

      Likely would have softened or removed all that stuff he dislodged by picking at it. Alternatively soak in vinegar to dissolve any cement - I'd avoid stronger acids such as muriatic or phosphoric acid lest it dissolve/attack the base metal.

      My company (well my ex -company) used ultrasonic a lot for cleaning electromechanical devices from EMD telephone exchanges. Thousands of devices where cleaned with it - and after some years all these devices got the same error: a resitor broke off. Researches found that ultrasonics does microfraktures to the material - so decide yourself if it's a good idea ;-)

    Hey Vince! Watchmaker here to comment on one of your watch videos as usual!
    The part you needed to remove after taking the case back off is an anti-magnetic dust cover. I think it took some of the movement with it on removal! As you say at the end, This watch uses an Omega calibre 1538 quartz movement. At about the 13 minute mark you're scratching around on the dial side of the movement - you're chipping teeth off the hour corrector wheel. It's based on the ETA calibre 255.461, though the hand height is different between the Omega and non-Omega version. That means if you try to fit the standard ETA you'll likely have trouble with hand clearance.
    These are nice movements to work on and they're fully serviceable, though in this instance it's a little bit beyond a service..! The cases and bracelets can also generally be refinished to a good standard.
    Great video as ever, cheers! 👍

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  Рік тому +2

      Good job I didn't get the ETA version then, cheers for letting me know as I was very close to buying all the parts just for a successful outcome for the video, but luckily I came to my senses. Nice one Howlin Dan 👍

      @@Mymatevince no problem, though I'd love to help with a successful repair! If you go for it, I can sort out a movement for you. Let me know if so and I'll send an email or something! Getting a dial, crown etc will be the tricky bit, so better to find those first!

      @Mymatevince  Рік тому +1

      @@howlindan49 Thank you 😎There is a dial in Australia and I think the crown might be ok once cleaned out. At this moment in time I am not sure if the original finder Chris wants it back or not. Once I find that out I will then decide if I am going to take it further. Realistically I suppose it will depend on the views of this video to see if it is worthwhile spending £400 - £500 on a watch that apart from the interesting story will be worthless 👍

    Acid dissolves cement or concrete. My dad dissolved hardened concrete splashes from his new car with sulphuric acid (battery acid) - no trace of a mark afterwards. I believe hydrochloric or acetic (vinegar) would also work. A vinegar bath also worked a treat on some WW2 metalwork that had been in the sea and had barnicles covering it.

    Interesting and cool find, nice that you were able to get it this much nicer and found those numbers to verify what exactly it is :)
    I have LCD game from 1983, which was forgotten in my parents cold storage for 25 years, inside it's box though, but it had to survive freezing cold temperatures in winters and hot summers. I was amazed that it survived intact and started right up, just needed cleaning and bending one of the battery power tabs, as there was minor contact problem. Luckily I had removed the battery before putting it in storage.

      Sadly too much damage ,strap broke and watch was lost concrete can be dissolved by acid but too much damage to links ,works tend to use mild steel so rust soon dissolves them , stainless and brass parts may be salvaged but you have to dissolve the cement first.

    The Speedmaster, (I have a beautiful one they nicknamed 'Albino' with its lovely slightly cream dial from 1986) is the most perfect, beautifully designed watch ever made - to me anyhow. I have owned four over the years and still regret selling TWO straight lug early speedmasters that were both immaculate. One I sold in the 90s for less than 400 quid. Today its at least 5k. I had gone out with cash to buy a(nother) Mini 1000 but came home on the train with a Speedmaster instead.

      @@Mymatevince that cleaned up nicer than i thought it would, good job. couldn't you re-purpose that watch and use it for carrying ear buds ? or mount a little blue tooth and speaker ? seem like "you "could add another watch as a cover/crown {cheap timex ?} and have a little secret compartment>? to shove a gould bullion worth about 2 g's and you will have a nice "poor boy emergency fund' everywhere you go... and the good thing is , no one would steal it... they would laugh at it and give it back and just take your wallet...?

    Great job Vince! I had a look at that video you mentioned about the tattooed watch face and heard your jumper story. I did that as a kid too--got a spot of something on a white school shirt and tried to fix it with White-Out. My mom wasn't happy.
    By the way, can you tell me the name of the music during the buffing sequence, and earlier? I know I've heard it before but can't place it. Thanks!

    As to how the watch was lost, I recently had a clasp fail and the watch literally fell off my wrist. Fortunately it was quickly recovered, but I also do not work at a building site. Something very similar could have happened to the original owner.
