  • Hi, this trying to fix video shows me attempting to repair a children's toy car simulator.
    Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things.
    I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series.
    Many thanks, Vince.

    It is amazing the amount of engineering that goes into these toys. I had no idea they were so mechanically intricate inside. Thanks for the enlightening video, Vince.

    When yo first took it apart, I said to my self, now you're in DEEP and what's more HOT water, but then I remembered, your experience with clocks, not to forget watches, I then smirked and thought, nope as daunting as it seems, the mudder will get fixed, well fixed as long as there are gears available.. dropped a like as usual Vince..

    If you're going to continue to work on projects with gears like this, you may want to consider trying to cast your own. You can make a simple silicone mold of the old, broken gear and then cast the new with a 2 part resin.

    I had one of these in the 90's. I was born in 1988, so I was a kid in the 90's and I quite enjoyed this "game." It was something older than me; I think my dad bought it from one of his co-workers at the time. It's not really a game; it's a pretend toy, and believe you me, there's a difference. Like a toy gun that came with different sound effects -- it's not a game in itself, it's a toy to play pretend, and you use your imagination to come up with all kinds of games for it. I played a lot of "pretend games" back then. Pretend teacher-student using a blackboard, pretend superhero (I had a Cyclops costume), pretend driving (using this), and so on. I never once thought any of it was rubbish, as I really did enjoy myself, as well as my younger siblings and my cousins.

      Yeah, I bought a used 1996 840ci (V8) for 4K around 7 or 8 years ago but it needed a bit of work. It was a lovely dark blue colour with grey leather interior. It was the nicest one I have ever seen as it was just plain....no body kits/spoilers, lovely simple wheels which weren't low profile. It was as plain as a 8 series could be haha. I sold it after about a year, I loved it on the motorway but all my driving was town traffic and at the time my road had very little parking and that thing was long, deceivingly long. Also the rear seats were tiny so unfortunately it wasn't that practical. A very interesting car though and maybe one to watch in the future for price rises, especially the V12 version. The weight of it and the shape felt perfect for motorway driving and when you put your foot down at 50 it flew just like other cars from 0-30 :-)

  • @andyfairman7812
    @andyfairman7812 5 років тому +2

    As always Vince, your patience astounds me. Great repair! Those flimsy plastic gears are a pain in the A$$. I know your not interested in doing anything more with this toy (and I can't blame you), but for the sake of argument, maybe two white LED's on the screen would be brighter and simulate two headlights for more realism. I know LED"s have been mentioned here already but two LED's would be taking it a step further. An added benefit would be longer battery life. Replacing all the other lights (pop up headlights, green turn signals, etc.) with the proper color LED's would further increase the battery life. Those filament bulbs obviously use more current to create light when compared to LED's. You could also put your meter in series with the batteries and measure the current 'before' and 'after' the LED mod. It might make for an interesting and educational video someday if you're ever unsure about what to make a video about. Also remember that you'd also have to add a resistor in series to limit the current to each LED circuit. There are easy to use calculator's online to tell you what value resistors to use depending on the type of LED. Anyway sorry for all the rambling! Keep up the great work and as always looking forward to more videos!

    Great job Vince! I know those bits are frustrating, but you did it well enough! I think some stuff was missing too! Either the person that took it apart didn't put them back in or it was for a version with more features. I bet that round hole with nothing in it was a motor that created a vibration when you went off the side of the road. It also looks like there should have been a speaker on the bottom and I thought it looked like there were wired for it, but I could be mistaken. I bet your kids would enjoy it!! Stuff to play with these days are more virtual! Being able to steer a wheel and shift is part of the fun!

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 років тому +1

      Very true Jim, I did see the speaker hole. I wondered if it was for a different model or if it was to let the clicking sound out of the case when off the side of the road. Not sure.
      I think the whole thing is a cheap copy of the Tomy one so maybe cost cutting took the speaker out of it and the non flashing indicator!!!!! Cheers for watching it and the comments :-)

    • @bartomiejgowala1167
      @bartomiejgowala1167 5 років тому +1

      @@Mymatevince You obviously need some blinker fluid! :) I wonder if the part you were playing with at 11:50 is only there to make that clicking sound, or there is a missing part (connector) which would be then used to break the circuit for indicators and make them flash? Clearly, indicators connection doesn't look right with that scotch tape :thinking: What's more, from what I can see, it's possible to connect that lightbulb to 3V, as the ignition key just connects negative side.

    • @Mymatevince
      @Mymatevince  5 років тому

      @@bartomiejgowala1167 You are correct, I didn't think to investigate the taped up contacts. I also didn't think that maybe the bulb was originally connected to the ignition key. Maybe that would make it brighter. Thanks for the tips :-)

    Hi Vince, I really can understand your thoghts that this one was a bit boring in fixing it and in seeing the end result. But, I had a similar toy back when I was 11 years old and it really was an exciting one for me. You know I am blind and having a physical steering wheel, a physical ignition key, a physical gear shifter, a quite nice car engine sound (mine mechanically reproduced a car engine sound by means of a little vibrating leaf spring connected to a rubber diafragm) and the clicking noise when I was no longer on the track was all really cool to me and you know, it was quite the only car game I was able to play. So, it really wasn't that boring to me seeing you fix one of these. It just brought back memories of me sitting at it and calling for my mother or dad to come and read the scores every time the fuel ran out. :-)

    • @Mymatevince

    It's funny to think that there is actually a skill element to it. With the track moving it can stall your progress as measured by the odometer- so it's incumbent on the user to keep to the 'live' part of the track (which of course moves from side to side) in order to progress as much as possible along before the fuel runs out- which in turn equates to the final score.

    Considering the age of the toy, would it not be possible that all the bulbs in the toy are the exact same? for the light on the road, maybe they are the same as the headlights, and the indicators. Maybe swap them around to see if that improves visibility on the road, I just cant see a manufacturer of a toy using many different bulbs.

    As I remember these, you could "crash" by hitting other cars. That's detected mechanically. And then it will cut power to the motor, but leave the lights on, possibly even flashing them. I know this is advice after the fact, but y'know, I feel interactive. The aim being, I think, to get the greatest distance logged on the odometer before you crash. So it is, technically, a game, with an aim and a lose condition and a score.

    Instead of watch oil, may I suggest using something designed specifically for motors that spin at high speeds, in this case, sewing machine oil. It's pretty cheap stuff, I use it on all my computer fans when they start to make a noise, you get quite a few years longer out of the fans too :)
    Picked up a bottle from my local sewing machine shop the other week, 8AUD for a 300mL bottle that'll last me for the next decade.

    Flashing indicators just takes a relay that you turn on and off, could easily be done without a chip of any kind, cars have been doing it since long before chips were created :) Interestingly enough, that relay is also what causes the indicators to make their noise.

    hey Vince, this is unrelated to this specific video but its something you should know, I noticed you apply to much thermal paste to things like the CPU, look up the pea method or other better methods to apply thermal paste, because the amount you are applying will cause the thermal paste to overflow the side and touch terminals and cause things to short out, or leave air pockets that will only insulate the heat, so I highly recommend looking up and using the pea method, its what I always use. Anyways keep up the great work, I love watching your videos!

    • @Operational117
      @Operational117 5 років тому

      You’re right about that, but I don’t think that the PS3s malfunctioned because of that.
      It’s fairly evident on the third one, considering someone else (other than Vince) had tried to reflow the GPU.
      In other words, it stopped working, its previous owner tried to reflow it, ultimately failed (the reflow is only a temporary solution in the unlikely event it fixes the issue) and sold it off.
      Other than that, this technique you described is indeed optimal, as it ensures a uniform spreading with little to no airpockets (and AFAIK, airpockets tend to insulate heat, the exact opposite of the thermal paste’s purpose).

    • @mr.quackersjunior8000
      @mr.quackersjunior8000 5 років тому

      Operational 117 ohh, ok well the main point is thermal paste application is important lol because you don’t want run off or airpockets

    • @mr.quackersjunior8000
      @mr.quackersjunior8000 5 років тому

      Shambles1980TRealOne yes it is true to much is better than to little, and I saw that video, however although nexus didn’t have any trouble, that doesn’t mean that overflow will not increase the likelihood of short circuiting something, because it does raise that chance by quite a lot, so it’s just plain recommended to apply thermal paste the proper way.

    • @mr.quackersjunior8000
      @mr.quackersjunior8000 5 років тому

      Shambles1980TRealOne by using the term “proper way” I refer to the use of correct thermal paste application, and the definition of that is simply to make sure you have the correct amount of thermal paste, that way you don’t have to little, or to much, and yes there are some methods like spreading it with your finger, that are worse than others, spreading it can cause air pockets to form that will then insulate heat.

    You said it was made in China, do you really expect the soldering to be good?

    "How the insides work", complete guess at the beginning, but it's a belt with graphics on it, rolling down.

    Fun toy (and very noisy). Put an old tablet (with OTG) inside, add some extra switches and read all controls with an arduino or buy a USB HID game controller kit and design the basic game with real gear sounds. Could be fun however it looks easier than really is ;-)

    I had similar thing when i was kid just less advanced. But for me that was a big thing, maybe i can't see this but there should be cars on the road, and your mission is avoid them... on this toy is just empty road i think🤔

      Hi, there is a couple of cars on the road but it makes no difference in the game if you go through them or dodge them. The bulb is so dim that is hard to see them in the video :-)

    I would have just parted this thing for the motor and light and some switches. These things were so poorly made and a lot of stuff broke down.
    My brother had the space turbo which is similar to this but you're driving a spaceship and you have to shoot the robots.
