  • Use a piece of bevel siding and some carefully fitted pieces of Zip System tape to flash the sheathing to the framing.

    Installing a nail-fin window in a wall sheathed with Zip System has become one of the most common installation situations in residential construction, yet it’s still often done incorrectly. A good installation begins with prep work on the rough opening, with a goal of protecting the moisture-sensitive framing materials, and ultimately the interior of the house. In the video, builder Jake Bruton shows how to use flashing tape to protect your windowsill as well as his preferred method of flashing that uses one piece of stretch tape to extend from one side of the window all the way to the other. Jake’s preferred method avoids the small pinhole gap created at the corner of the windowsill when using normal flashing tape because the stretch tape allows for the user to simply pull the tape down and cover the entire corner, leaving no room for water to get trapped. Jake then uses a simple technique with regular flashing tape to treat the sides and top of the window. Each side requires slightly different treatments to completely protect the frame of the building, but Jake’s demonstration makes the process very straightforward.

    I would use Zip liquid flash for this. Fluid applied has fewer chances for install failure.

    Would this be the same process for Zip R-sheathing?

    If only all builders took pride in their work! I would love to have someone like you build a house for me.

    The piece of flashing at the header should have been applied after the window and header flashing was installed to prevent reverse flashing. Also, the horizontal seams that die into the window should be wrapped 1" into the window opening.

      That is seam flashing all over the wall. I think lapping it or cutting it is pointless. You are depending on Zip tape for this flashing system, so none of the weatherproof plane is really lapped over the head flashing. There is tape all over the wall that does not lap that head flashing and that one piece of seam tape should be left. If you don't trust the Zip tape, add some other WRB over all of it.

    Question: I did not slope my sill in framing so will need to add a beveled piece like you did here. I measured my rough openings and the window manufacturer is only allowing a 1/2" tolerance for the entire window. Should I increase my rough opening window size (say another 1/4 to 1/2) if the shims/sill plate angle is being added after?

      Yes, this is how you do it. Oversize the vertical RO measurement to account for slope and shim.

    Do you not need to apply a liquid primer first? That's how I've always done it with the blueskin flashing tape

    Good video, but I’d just liquid flash the opening.

    Does the tape remain in place? Do you paint over it? I don't understand as it would look strange on the outside.

      This is just the water and air barrier layer. You could have external insulation and cladding above it.

    Liquid flash it. No measuring. Be done in half the time and on to the next window.

      Hey question for you. If you liquid flash do you install the window while the liquid flash is wet or do you let the liquid flash dry first and then install the window?

      @@DavidDouglasZach let liquid flash dry first

      Liquid flash would take a long time to do this properly... and you'd probably use an entire sausage tube ($38 as of 2023) per window.

    i DONT get these guys showing are trade on youtube ,ive been a carpenter for the past 12 years ,i look around my area and seems like everone is a carpenter ... hey im not saying this is a bad thing im saying its a trade ,protect are trade , if you havent gone to a trade school or apprentice program ,you shouldnt be installing windows or building and watching youtube thinking you can do this stuff , i understande the need to cut cost of a home owner ,i own a home and it gets expensive ... just my thought a trade is a skill you build with time and hard work not just buy watching youtube

    • @chadford8500
      @chadford8500 Рік тому

      Most of this stuff is common sense anyway. Not downing your trade, I know it's hard work, but it isn't rocket science.

    • @pcatful
      @pcatful 7 місяців тому

      And do you see the carpenters all over doing this? I think a lot of presenters are trying to train other builders. Where do you live that all the builders have gone to trade school? I don't think they are that common. I let tradesmen work on my house, sometimes I regret it, and sometimes I redo stuff --the doable stuff like redoing the door hanging and trim--because it is so bad.
