    It's like saying that someone who can draw masterpieces in charcoal is an inferior artist to one who paints masterpieces in oils or acrylics. Texture, color, image, context all relay information from the artist to the experiencer. That's what art does. Just because your situation doesn't make a piece particularly meaningful to you, there's no sense in concluding that it has no meaning; it might be life-changing for the next person (or for you in 10 years' time, when your perspective has changed). Thank you for taking on this important topic in art! (P.S. I love, love, love your channel!)

      *What defines people’s success and attraction is how they bring out there uniqueness. We are all born with a potential to be something no one else can; ourselves. Billie does this really well because she obviously knows her voice very well and brings out all it’s best features and produces in its most definitive form. Some fantastic singers hate their voice but accept that their style is what there voice was born to do.*

      I think she is a good singer, but I am just not fan of her style. It just sounds like she is whispering every time it's very hard to understand what she is saying. I just wish she would use more power. She doesn't have to be like Chrisina Aguilera, but I can barely hear her and cant really understand what she is saying.

    • @crosita1
      @crosita1 4 роки тому +19

      @@Nordap1986 Do you have any hearing loss? I think her voice is in a range where hearing loss is common. I don't have trouble hearing her, and as Sam said in this video she wasn't really doing the breathy/whispery thing on this song so much as just quiet.

    • @aileen9266
      @aileen9266 4 роки тому +8

      crosita1 every singer can choose their own technique. Singing in a more breathy voice can be dangerous if you use it without a proper technique. I don’t know much about billie but as far as I can see she has a very good technique. And she and her brother (it’s her brother right?) produce music that fits to her voice. I think I saw a video of her where she sung in a fuller voice, less breathy and with much more “power”. But I think that was when she was younger. So she is well capable of doing that. But it would sound like everybody else. I honestly prefer her style that she has now too. It’s not always important to understand the lyrics anyways. It’s part of her style too. There are a ton of singers who include that. Usually when you learn to sing you are also being thought about pronunciation. To sound clear so that other people understand you and to get to the notes by changing vowels. So her way of talking is something she chooses to do and part of the style.

      @Jessica c tons of people have "butchered" smells like teen spirit because it's an iconic song and almost impossible to capture the angst and grunge of the time and anyones vocals will always be compared unfavourably to Kurt's. To say she can't sing because of that one cover is absurd. Listen to her cover of heart of glass for instance, she captures the essence of the song and rocks that thing!! Singers have a range and aren't going to suit every song... but because they sing one song badly doesn't mean they can't sing. It means they made bad choices for THAT song.

    I love Miley's voice. Always have. Even if the song she's singing isn't my thing, I can still love her voice. I don't think her toolbox is limited at all. It's exciting to think about what more she could do. Jazz, or more serious/symphonic rock. Would love to hear her voice on an Armin van Buuren track, even.
    I also love how Billie has shown us not every great singer has to be some variation of Aretha Franklin/power singer. In one softly sung phrasing, she's able to delicately convey tremendous emotion and complex inflection. It blows me away.

    Since around 20 years, we are bombarded with TV singing contests, were talents have to make an impression in about 90 seconds, or so. Most of them chose the big belt tactic to convince the jury. Most spectators obviously are not voice teachers or bel canto experts. They are just watching for some entertainment. Meanwhile whole generations have been regrettably misled that the highest, longest and loudest belt is the only benchmark for the quality of a singer. It isn't and some of the biggest stars of all time sang smooth and with much emotion.

      EXACTLY! As a old music teacher I tell you that only a few people today can understand Billie vocal talent… she is what music exists for like poets in the past… to transport the listener into your artistic emotional world. THIS is art. Unfortunately over the years we have LOST SO MUCH THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS: the true, deep meaning of art and music and today singers/artists they are all marketing screaming products … without unique soul and creative unique art in their voice , but Billie has brought me back to rediscover the old classic music when music was ART and only pure emotion what I had lost and miss in recent years after Amy Winehouse, Norah jones Etc .. and I had also lost hope of ever seeing them again actually after autotune etc …. she is a true diamond in that industry. only those who have an artistic sensibility can understand this. She is on another level… I don't care if an artist competes with another to have the greatest vocal range, this is NOT important… THIS IS NOT WHAT MUSIC IS FOR … but what can you do in that range you have, how do you make it YOURS. Whitney Houston is "the voice" not because she was the first singer with the biggest vocal range, no, absolutely not, because she didn't have the widest… but because of her tonality and tonality she is the SOUL, the heart button of a singer that makes him or her UNIQUE in the history of music and Billie has that, this talent is rare and I started hearing it develop at 15 on her EP, I waited because I invested in her… I perceived she was different from everyone else … and in her debut album I had the confirmation .. and now that she is evolving her sound even more .. for me it was incredible to witness this because these are authentic and rare vocal performers that you don't see often…. they are artists who study music and then voluntarily or not, they find their different sound. If you hear the pop singers of the last 2 decades you will often find it hard to understand who is singing, but when you hear Billie it’s her .. there is no doubt. Even in the past she was like this… she has a vocality that comes from the 20-60s of jazz .. I don't know how she managed it but from her EP there was jazz influence and from that she was able to build a vocal signature in her voice. Amazing.

    Billie’s vocal style reminds me of Julie London. Gentle, soft, beautiful. Julie London used to say she “had a thimbleful of voice.”
    I love Julie London’s voice though. So far I’m quite a fan of Billie’s tone, softness, and writing.
    Miley, I don’t always love her songs, but I love how interesting and expressive her voice is

    Billy, to me, has a more sultry sound. Whereas Miley has a more, (trying to find the right word and failing) not naughty, but knowing maybe? She's working the song for effect. Billie gets a vibe and the song works her. I don't know if I'm expressing myself well or not, I think they're both extremely talented.

    Resonance to me means how the sound reverberates around within your mouth before it comes out, but even then, Miley uses more of a frontal mouth sound, so maybe it's seen as resonating because it resonates around the room? I think people do get different ideas for what resonance is.
    I know what you mean. Billie has a specialized sound, whereas Beyoncé has a wider range of sounds. There's nothing wrong with honing your craft if that's what you want to specialize in.
    I will always love Billie Eilish and the beauty she creates. I, too, cannot wait to see what her future holds for her.

    Id love to hear the both of them together on this song. I think it would sound great. They seem to have the same sound just one is slightly louder....that being said......I like Billie Eilish I thinks she is a wonderful singer. I dont believe some people realize how hard it is to sing quietly and still sound good or to have a low toned voice and still sound good. I actually find it easier to belt a key than to quietly sing it. I was once told that during quiet I should move into the microphone and back away from it when I get to a key Im better at as I tend to be very loud at that time. Anyways, Billie and Miley are both great in different ways and for me that is great, everyone should sound how they want. I love diversifying my musical interests.

    I love your videos, Sam. I absolutely agree with your idea of what singing is at its core. Music has gotten me through many hardships, not necessarily because of a singers' ability to go through many facets of their voice, but, rather, their ability to emote and communicate in a way that I could relate to. Music is a blessing and a gift that, I find, too many people take for granted.

    resonance means (to me), that delightful UUGGGHHHH feeling I get when I know it's a perfectly sang note. it's when the singer has that perfect pitch and placement that makes you feel the note, it's the perfect vowel frequencies - I forget what they're called but you can tell when you hear a resonant note. I look for that resonance and a healthy vibrato to decide if the person is a good singer or not.

    I love this type of video! I think it's very helpful to hear two singers sing the same notes with varying styles to better learn how they use their instrument. I think it helps that the two are "professional" singers in that they generally would do different things to evoke the sound they are going for.
    I would love to see more videos like this!
