Good looking interior of the giraffe restaurant, very nice. Their prices are reasonable as well. Their food looked very good too. For me though, beef dripping fried fish and chips are the ultimate. Graveley’s wins it for me. Thanks for your great reviews. If you run out of places to try in Leeds why not travel a bit further afar?

Graveley's looks like some of the best fish and chips I've ever seen I am beginning to think I should live in Leeds. My mouth was watering thank you for a good vlog.
I like the look of the latter, definitely. I think the average restaurant has to cater for other dishes, so can't concentrate on fresh fish and chips and deep fried food exclusively. It was a big shock to me as a teenager to move over to Merseyside in the 1970s from Nottinghamshire only to find that all the chippies used vegetable oil not animal fat. There is just no comparison. I love going back to Nottinghamshire to hunt out a chippy that serves food fried in animal fat. The difference is night and day.
I'm from Bradford and 68 years old. Fish and chips were Always cooked in beef drip, and Cod was Not on the menu. West Yorkshire fish was always Haddock, in my experience. Haddock is a lot nicer fish anyway, but needs to be cooked in beef dripping. And, what has happened to "cakes"? They were a staple in all the fish shops and now seem to have been replaced with various flavoured fishcakes, not a patch on the original cakes. Love your reviews, but I especially like those where you sit in your car and you can hear you crunching through the batter.... Yummy. I live in North Yorkshire now, and dearly miss the old "traditional" small, local chippies found on street corners. I need to come home!!!! xx
The green leaf garnish at the Restaurant was pea shoots grown from marrowfat peas used to make mushy peas. Goes nicely in salads. Nice light tempura batter on the cod. You can't beat fat chip shop chps and crispy batter on the haddock. My winner too. 😊
Awesome video! But I wish you would try out a Cafe that offered smoked and/or steamed or broiled fish and a German potato salad or macaroni and cheese. Or is that not classic English? I am from the states and will never visit the places you go; but I enjoy your videos. What about some smoked eel? There once was a company that had authentic smoked fish in the little cryovac packages available at my local fish counter in Pittsburgh. But horribly expensive. A shame though. They had haddock, halibut, black tipped shark, tuna, swordfish, blue marlin, etc. I would like to see you try out a restraunte that offered rabbit or turtle. Just a thought. You seem to have a rather sophisticated sense of taste. Godspeed.
When I saw this video, my immediate thought was that this did not need making as chips shop fish and chips are ALWAYS going to be better! 😉😋 Thing is, Graveley's isn't even the best chippy. If you go out of town, and go to places like Mermaid down Harehills Lane or Murgatroyds or Oakwood Fisheries, you'll get much better quality. Thicker fish, and a bigger portion of chips. You just get a couple of chef's simply just cooking fish all day and that's all they really have to concentrate on and it's better by far! Another great video!
Your spot on, never eat F&C in a Pub or a Restaurant. Another point ask where the fish is from. Most are now from Norwegian factory ships Frozen and boxed to size, and later defrosted for cooking. Is there anywhere that you can get fresh fish? Beef dripping is a must, down in the tip called London , I cant find anywhere that cooks in beef dripping .

Fish, Chips what a favourite, my opinion the Chip shop wins. As a thought they probably sell far more, hence likely be fresher over a restaurant that specialise in other menu dishes, as one you reviewed did, so possibly fish in such establishments may sit longer in a freezer ! Visually however both fish chips looked appetising.

I'm a big fan of fish and chips, but it's got to come from a traditional chippy. Sadly both of those looked pretty grim. Lovely second meal, I prefer standard chips, the lazy(skin on) variety just don't appeal to me at all! Great video, you've inspired me to have a burger!
Hello there! I think the location varies for the restaurant and the fish and chip shop. You never know what traditions/type of fish or chips they do. For example when I go get fish and chips in kent the chips are PROPER crispy on the outside and soft in the middle. But In my personal opinion I think chip shop does it for me as the one I go to does it very well and isn’t as expensive.
You should have included a Fish Bar Restaurant.....you get the better chippy food because they're often attached but get the restaurant experience and ambience for much less than a high street frozen food rip off merchant. The chippy wins but no cod on that menu so needs calling out....any chippy worth its salt will give you cod or haddock options , close but no cigar
The biggest miss conception is which fish shop is better, this comes doen the chips, and batter. The reason i say this, is 90% of chip shops, and the fish he is eating is all the same fish, bought all over the country, unless you are at a seaside resturant, which may have catch of the day from local fishing boats.. The reason is, its all frozen fish these days, because its the factory ships that go out for weeks at a time, its caught processed and frozon on the ships, using every part of the fish down to making crab sticks. they are frozen in 7 kilo packs or 10 kilo packs, and sized per pack, 8 to 16oz 16 to 32oz and 32oz+ the smaller fillets, are the either frozen individualy, in boxes, good for nursing homes and the likes, some are battered or bread crumbed like you will get in your iceland, or frozen section in supermarkets, not sure if these portions are all done on ship, on on land. I know this because i was manager of fish mongers in london for 10 years. But the quality of fish is as good as you get can these days. traditional fish shops, tend to be better, as there batter, type of potatoes used, and cooking times have been passed own through the family, sadly these guys are dying out, due to the cost of fish, and less people eating them regular, the chains taken over because there offer a more diverse food choice and drinks. Im not in London now, but i do support my local fish shop, i also buy my cod from him for other reciepes, to make at home, he just sells me the plain cod,
The disappointment of the chip 🍟 shop was the plastic knife and fork and it looked like a plastic plate, but saying that the fish was a lot better than the restaurant. I can’t understand where the curry sauce finds its way onto fish and chips because i don’t think it belongs there. The restaurant had a much better presentation than the chip shops. I enjoyed the vlog 👍
Are you having a giraffe?( that's a laugh 😂 by the way) What's the trend of serving food in layers? Fish on top of fries/chips. Result, soggy chips 😢 And grass cuttings should not be there. Graveney's ❤😊❤Winner with out a doubt. They just looked the business 😊 Proper fish&chips ( only missing the newspaper!!!) Personal note. Why North of Watford do you only seem to have Cod or Haddock? Plenty of 🐠 in the sea cheers
Now the first one looked like a really nice place to eat, but the second had what looked like the better fish and chips. When you hang your hat on cooking one particular meal, you tend to be really good at it, or go out of business quickly. A steakhouse doesn't make a better pizza than a pizza place, and the pizza place doesn't make better steaks than the steakhouse. Unless one of them is on the fast track to getting closed.
Chips looked nice, sauces were a bit thin, didn't like the look of the batter, a bit thin and not bubbly! .on the second one the fish batter looked much better, and there were chippy chips!!! Peas looked nice, some put flavouring in peas, I do .I liked this meal better 8.5 I think restaurants haven't got the space for the big fryers, they do make a difference and the cleaning and cost of oil or dripping is a lot
if you just went for the fish and chips you would have paid £9.50. paying over a £1 for like the mushy peas or curry sauces is just not good value. the Restaurant should have just made there own mushy peas. by taking garden peas and a squeeze of mint sauce they would have been great but for all there added items they were just far too small a portion size And I once again have to say that brewers fayre do 2 meals for £10 and you could get two fish and chips for the price of the fish shop ones. and you get the mushy peas, lemon and Tartar sauce with them.
Say what you like, but you can't beat a proper F and C shop, no fancy garnish etc, the restaurant F and C plate was cluttered with little ramekins filled with the sauces too much going on😊
Can't beat a proper chippy if it's run right, the restaurant meal was all cash and carry rubbish the proper chippy didn't have frozen chips or canned mushy peas or boxed fish it had dried marrowfat peas boiled in bicarb, rumbled chips and fresh fish no contest 👌😁
It would have been fairer to go to a proper fish restaurant rather than a chain which just happens to have fish n chips on the menu. It’s like comparing apples with oranges. I do usually like your videos but I thought this was an unfair comparison.

Chippy all day long.
I agree
The chippy looked way better … I also didn’t like how the restaurant put salt on as not everyone will want salt
It was a bit unusual that they seasoned it already
