Count Rossi's road-legal Porsche 917K in action at Festival of Speed 2019!

- It's 2019. An this means that exactly 50 years ago the most famous racing prototype made its world debut. During this year's Goodwood Festival of Speed 11 Porsche 917s gathered to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
Among these there was chassis 917-030, considered the first ever race car to be fitted with an ABS system too. It was built in 1971 and raced by Martini Racing Team only during that year. It returned back to Porsche factory for further ABS testing and then put into storage.
A few years later Count Gregorio Rossi di Montelera, who was the heir to the Martini & Rossi distilling fortune (and great sponsor of Porsche in motorsport), to satisfy a personal desire asked Porsche to convert a 917K to street use. Not much work was done on the chosen chassis (917-030): it was simply painted in silver, a pair of mufflers were added and they removed the rear tailfins. Plus the spartan interiors were re-trimmed in beige leather.
But the main problem was finding a country willing to register a prototype racing car. It was a straight "no" in Germany, French authorities wanted him to crash-test the car first, so he tried Italy, where it should've been possible (with the right cash-laden envelopes), but even they turned their back.
In the end, the car was taken to Alabama where they granted it the licence plate, 61-27737. But at one condition: that the car could never come close to the state-border.
917-030 always remained in Count Rossi's hands until he passed away in 2003 when his son, Manfredo, took ownership of the car. He received many offers by interested buyers since then and apparently he refused one in excess of $40 million recently.
"030" was last road-registered on Texas plates which have now since expired. This means that the car cannot actually be driven on the road at this moment in time.

EVEN THE SOUND OF THE 917 IS ABSOLUTELY UNMISTAKEABLE - you can hear it blindfold ...
Many people say that they have the untimate street machine, or that they saw the untimate street machine. But all that ends if you could say "my street car is a Porsche 917".
🤣 completely true
what about a caparo 😎
i disagree the road legal porsche 962 is the king however these 917s is less then 10% behind like just imagine these monsters racing with warm tires on a twisty road vs current road cars... ua-cam.com/video/FV_kQEJt3pc/v-deo.html
No electric car can compare to the pure drama, soul & emotion that these cars exude...plus the sound & looks are just timeless
Fully agree with you mate
Amazing, that’s how to spend the family fortune with real style.
Yes bugger real estate, what we need is real style.
Seeing how these cars appreciate they are a sound investment. Says the man with a Porsche 917.
C Mosca except they brought that whilst they still were a sponsor plus old racecars were totally under appreciated then, some were scrapped after the end of their racing life bus could be brought inexpensively
Godwind Racing I’m sure you’re right about the history but running a Le Mans winning race car on the road is extravagant in any context and holding it in the family for 40+ years is amazing.

I’d love to go to work with it, rev it up when leaving the garage in the morning
What a great historic race car.
Dont see the point of offering 4 times the value of a car when you know its not for sale. Respect is definitely something you loose with money. This car deserved to be in this family forever. Period
Your comment is beautifully put together my friend. What caught my eye the most was the mention of how wealth can change a person's values. I completely agree too, i believe for most wealthy people who had their wealth just handed down, their common sense is inversely proportional to their wealth. Also like you mentioned offering 40 mil for a car as this, would only destroy the car's meaning, rendering it a typical museum car that will only be treated as a rolling investment so I hope the Martini family will hold onto that car as long as they can.
Thank you 19Bozzy92, very interesting video and storyline on 917/30. I'm a fan of that car, so I much enjoy your videos.

Monster Legend 917K
When I saw "road-legal 917K," I assumed he managed to register it somewhere in Europe, where the laws are likelier to allow something like that. I'm glad that I had just set my coffee down when the Texas license plate showed up.
Yeah, I didn't know there is a road legal version. I also assumed that it was a European car, but not for the same reasons as you. In fact, the U.S is much easier to get a vehicle plated than in Europe. I could build a car in my garage, from scratch, and get it legal. An old guy that lives near me dropped an old Chevy Cavalier engine and transaxle into a golf cart, put lights and blinkers on it, had it inspected, they gave him a vin and title. It is plated and he drives it. Hilarious when you see him driving down the road. I hear that people in Europe can't get kit cars from reputable companies on the road.
@@normand5847 Yeah, French here, I'm no expert, but you sure can go to hell before the government allows you to register this.
There's was homologation regulations back then.. which forced Porsche to make, I think it was 50. All prototype sportcars, which back then ran on public roads, like Le Mans or Spa.. they had to have blinkers and all that required equipment for cars. Porsche did sell a few to race raceteams and private buyers, but kept most themselve.. if today, there were a country in Europe to allow a car like this, it would be Sweden or Britain
The car was first registered in Alabama.
Porsche motor vehicles are living entities. They have a conscience/soul. That's what I like to think anyway.
Sweet Baby Jesus!
I lovw the 917's especially the 917k
Fully agree with you
Remarkably there actually was one Porsche 917K registered in Germany with plate "CW (city of Calw) - K 917".
And what happened to that car?
I highly doubt that, there are no road legal 917's in Europe, only in the US.
Might be a replica
@@Kimmo666 yeah, might've been.
It's true, a Porsche 917K was registered in Germany with the palte CW - K - 917.
The car has the Number 917 021.
A guy who bought a the 917 (in pieces) from Porsche sold it 1975 to Joachim Gossmann. He completed the car in and at the 03.05.1977 the car got registered legally with TUV here in Germany. Joachim Gossmann sold the car in 1983 and the new Owner converted it back to the original racing-spec.
Also i saw around 12 years ago, a Porsche 917 K with registration at a Porsche meeting in "Braunschweig" (BS) where the car was registered. The Owner was/is Member of the "Porsche Stammtisch Braunschweig".
I may have some Pictures of this car on my old computer, i'll see what i can do. Also possibel that its a few more Years ago and i didnt own a digital-camera, then ill never find the pictures.
But i remember it exactly. It was a raining when I arrived at the meeting. The car was sitting under a cover so nowone knows what car it was. When it stopped raining the owner pulled the cover away and short time after he drove away. The car sounded fantastic and you could hear it long after you lost sight of it!
The car was colored i Gulf-Colors. I dont know anything further about the car. As i said, i may have pictures....
Texas FTW! I have seen a 962 road version at cars and coffee Dallas

I remember the Road & Track article on this car - very early 70's - car had Alabama plates and was chrome.
Yes, I remember reading an article in English magazine Autocar. The registration number was, if my memory serves me well, 61-277-37 Alabama 75, Heart of Dixie. At that time, Martini was one of Porsche sponsors. Great era.
Btw, there is also a roadlegal 917k in Monaco. It's the one in Martini livery from Claudo Roddaro.
That one's a replica though. This one's the only original (and yes, it's a one-off) 917K, made and street-converted by Porsche for Count Rossi in 1971.
@@MDDeGrande1994 no, that car he is talking about is chasis 917-037, purchased by Claudio Roddaro in 2016 and subsequently converted for the road. Also it was finished by Porsche specialists at gunnar racing and according to porsche, the car consists of 95% original period parts and was never involved in any crashes making it the most original 917 in the world. Also there was another car chasis 917-021 which was factory converted to road legal specification and was given approval in Germany, this car however went through more changes than the count's car to be deemed roadworthy. It was then changed back to race spec and given the 'hippie'livery and has remained that way even today.
@@MDDeGrande1994 Also if you want to see that car in action, @Belgian-Motorsport has a very good video if it flying around nurburgring. 😏👉👉

Pedro Rodríguez dominaba este auto y en lluvia era invencible.
Not the same thing obviously but made me remember when I was a puppy (Sr. in H.S.) in '75 and was racing in the AMA 250cc road race class. We had a Yamaha TZ-250 B ("We" being my Dad the Engineer out at Cape Canaveral paid and wrenched it and I rode her:) and when I was felling froggy I'd take the tag off one of my Enduro dirt bikes and affix it to the rear fender and I'd ride the TZ around Titusville and Cocoa Beach, Fl. Back then you didn't have to have your headlight on so unless a cop really studied you it didn't look crazy out of place...those were always fun rides.
Incredible aerodynamics still to this day!
Classic car 👌❤️
GT Universe not really. Drag coefficient .44 is not good compared to today's .25.
Damn, I wish I were a Count!
Do I see a Texas license plate? Damn straight.

Lad lol
Thanks for this upload 19Bozzy92. Anyone know how fast this beast could go? My guess from what I gather 380km/h or above.
I think at the long straight in Le Mans they reached a speed of 360km/h..then came the redline...and 300 rpm above it, the engine would blow up. The 917/30, the turbo giant with nearly 1200hp was able to reach over 385 km/h...as I know that car helds the record on the old Talladega Circuit with an average speed of 385km/h
@Austrin Alick I think that's the 1971 917LH you were talking about. But this particular one was a track-only 1971 917K-030 which was a track-only race-spec car (with a Martini Livery, I believe) but was then converted for road use, restricted to 550hp and 320 km/h and then sold to Count Rossi di Montelera. Since then, it's the ONLY original road-legal/going 917, that was originally registered in Alabama.
By the way, the 917/30 is also capable of extreme speeds (a bit faster than the 917LH) but never raced in Europe.
Got to be one of the rarest Porsche’s of all time. ..Just your typical grocery getter
Just might want to ask Derek Bell about this conversation . . .
Silly french wanted to crash test the car first. They could watch any lemans racing from 70s to see how the car looks like after hitting a wall with a speed well above 250km/h. Im sure there were plenty of examples of crashes. Many times the body probably saved the driver from death or serious injuries. Anyway, perfect car.
Another great video! 2 down voters can eat cake!

Alabama plates......the way he got it to be street legal in the first place, many years ago....
First Alabama and now Texas?
The only (once) road legal 917K great car! Nice video with the info.
Regarding 50 years, as an old Engineer myself, it is also 50 years tomorrow that Apollo XI touched down on the moon and the 917 cabin electronics look oddly similar to the Apollo capsule electronics....little wonder, as both were mostly designed/influenced by German Engineers.
First years of F1 the teams were not car brands but the country where they came from! For GB cars colour green, Germany silver, Italy red... From there the típical colours of today superbrands
no smoko?
How that car lost Le Mans to a 5 (7?) year old design with a Ford 302 engine in '69 is one of the great unsolved mysteries of our times :)
Steve Fowler Ford won it on less fuel stops, l believe
@@chunkybuster7203You may very well be right...I know it was a 2 second victory so very close. I just heard this tidbit a few weeks ago in a Carrol Shelby interview video here on youtube. He said had his brakes Engineer not invented a process and manufactured the necessary parts to allow the rotors to be changed in 15 seconds the GT40 would have never beat the porsches in any year...he said the heavy GT40 went thru 7 sets of rotors in a 24 hour race...he said it was a tightly held secret that Porsche and Ferrari never did pick up on.
No the 917 you are talking about was the earliest model in 1969 which underwent serious aerodynamic refinement to become what it is. The 1969 which was beaten by a gt40 was terrible at high speed handling and turning albeit having a good top speed and mostly ended up retiring during the race or they fell behind. Because of this porsche decided to field their older prototype the 3 litre 908 which though was faster, had no chance against the gt40s. The car we see in the video is the 1970 iteration of the 917 which was acheived after wind tunnel testing and involvement if John Wyer and his team (gulf).
