Another fun little detail that TV Tropes pointed out about the opening and how scary Jumanji is. The boys hear wolves howling, yet the older brother brushes it off like it's nothing. Bear in mind, they are in the middle of the woods, in the 1800s with no kind of firearm or weapons to speak of. People under normal circumstances would be on high alert about wolves, but after everything these two have gone through because of Jumanji, they aren't even fazed by it.
The exteriors where shot in my hometown when I was about six and he's right, the Parish Shoes sign is still there. We love that this film was made here and our tiny connection to Robin.
As a kid I always liked Jumanji for not talking down to children. It does have some rather adult themes and scary scenes, but kids have to deal with death, fear, and complicated relationships with their fathers, too. It's similar to Hook in that respect.

Additional thing: the hunter missed on purpose because the characters cant die. They have to finish the game. That's how Alan survived all the time in the jungle. Death wasn't an option. The horror here is psychological damage to them and knowing that their actions cause actual damage to those around them.
An alternative perspective is that death is allowed, and if all players die then the game wins. For example; players can be removed from board games all the time, they are competitive after-all so removing a rival brings you closer to being overall victor... but to counter my own argument, this does not seem to be a PvP board game, with references from the game calling them a party, so a group of allies working together which would imply that this is a game of PvG (like Shadows over Camelot or Arkham Horror) - in fact the whole film is the four working together to get through the game, implying that the game can win if no players remain. So why doesn't it just throw everything at players turn one? That would be cheating, it has to give the players a chance (not particularly good chances, but a chance) otherwise it would be breaking its own "Don't be a cheat" rule. Of course just a counter-theory, with not much in the way of backup evidence so take it as you will.
Alternatively, it could be seen as a sort of shout out to the holomatrix device from Galaxy of Terror, in that it's basically a piece of technology that can bring the seemingly impossible to life, and if you master the things it summons to terrorize you, it all goes away.
Honestly I doubt that's actually how it works. Jumanji wants to be played and likely wants to be played for as long as possible. The obstacles it summons have the added effect of distracting and in other cases stopping the players from continuing, thereby dragging the game out longer. The game itself as we see can be played by 4 people at maximum, meaning that the game could still be played even if three out of the four players died or atleast two people can still play as the objective is the first person to reach the end wins. As to what happens when a player dies, then their piece simply falls off the board and the remaining players keep going. That frankly plays more in the games sadistic nature, not only forcing players to keep going inspite of the dangerous beasts and plagues they might summon but also the trauma of possibly seeing friends, family or simply other human beings being killed.
Van Pelt is an avatar of the game. He is whatever the game needs him to be. I also think he elements of Van Pelt is decided by the players. This could create some interesting plot points and a personalized villain in the sequels.
This is one of those movies that you enjoy as a child because it's funny and exciting, but hits you in the feels as an adult because of the mental health and familial relationship themes.

Counter point to the Van Pelt, game being merciful idea: you could argue that being a literal hairs breadth away from death at uncertain yet constant intervals for someone who entered the jungle as a child is constant psychological terror. I mean even for hardened veterans being close to gunfire is unnerving. Just a thought.
I've always loved hearing your insight and deep research on horror movies. You also bring out such cool objects from the films which makes your reviews more amazing.
I interpret Van Pelt as a game character who is the antagonist, but changes form as the game evolves. Hence why there’s also a Van Pelt villain in the sequel as well.
That may not be far from the truth. In an episode of the animated series Peter, Judy and Alan get rid of Van Pelt for what seems for good, only for Peter to start turning into Van Pelt, as there must always be a Hunter. So the current Van Pelt might actually be a past player who made this same mistake.
The Jumanji board is like the Lament Configuration or Necronomicron (Evil Dead) where I think it might actually be sentient and a sort of sadistic genie-demon-eldritch abomination.

I am overjoyed that you have done this. Jumanji is an all time favorite from my childhood. So much so that I now watch it with my 5 year old daughter. Love your channel and please resume the hannibal retrospective soon!!!
Oh, I am excited for this. Loved the old Jumanji movie as a kid. It was surprisingly unsettling, between the creepy opening hinting at what's to come, to the creepy monster animals that come from the game and just seeing the devastation the game had not just on Alan himself but managing to destroy an entire town, it's truly intriguing. Kind of wish that angle was continued with the Sequels, but they are still pretty fun movies.
That's an interesting point about the time travel. I guess I always figured that the game would always go back to the point when you first started playing since it says it'll undo everything it's done. It just so happened that Alan's game lasted 26 years, and so everything that happened during that time had to be undone since the game was active and had to reset to before Sarah rolled.
I think the reason why the house flooded despite the massive hole in the house could be because of the over growth within the house. It could have grown to the point of blocking the hole perhaps.
As far as "You will slip back even more than your token," goes, Peter himself is, in a way, sent back. He, himself, is reverted back into potential (depending on the game, and what sort of 'science' it has) previous evolution of humanity.
Thank you for making this and making it an hour long, the deep analysis was amazing and you changed the way I view the game, I always thought of it as a neutral entity with a twisted sense of humor but after this I can see that more evil property I missed as a child
Hey man I really enjoyed this video covering probably one of the first films I've ever seen, I've been a long time fan but just thought I'd let you I enjoyed this breakdown especially with the nature of the board itself.
Really enjoyed this review, loved the analysis portions you did on the game, really appreciate the extended detail, and overall a very well rounded review bringing up points throughout, that's not also said about this review but your others I've seen aswell.
something to point out about the "plot hole that's Alen's locked room" as Deus said, yea she just didnt get to it. as she was cleaning the other part of the house first, call the locksmith when get to it.. but then when in the attic, heard the strange noise and yup, call the exterminator first, cause frankly who are you gonna call first? someone to get a stuck door unlock or something to rid of a possible infestation of who knows what kind of critters out of the house?, then she goes into town to do other things more important, a stuck door is just that- they probably would have gotten to it the very next day if none of the game stuff happened when they happened
A nice detail as well was that Allen was talking to his dad on the phone at the end. And apparently he and Allen’s mom are flying in to spend Christmas with him and Sarah. It implies Allen and his dad developed a much better relationship with each other in the reset timeline.
yes, cause when they beat the game and Alan and Sarah were returned to the moment just before they started playing, Alan's father walked in, saying he forgot something. and Alan jumpped up to hug his father and said that he was sorry, at the moment you hear in Alan's father's voice he did soften up and said they'll talk alter man to man, to which alan said "how about father to son" moreless
I really enjoyed this. A great video. Not like other reviews, where ppl just say what happens and whether they like the film or not, but an actual break down. Jumanji, Critters, Gremlins, ET and The Spiderwick Chronicles, were all favorites of mine.
@@HlootooThunderhammerit's definitely a favorite of mine. I never knew of the books or games, but I've loved the movie from the very first time I had watched it. I still watch it occasionally.
Still a fan of this wonderful film so many years later, seeing this review was absolutely amazing as a fan of your videos 🙂 as of this comment I’m on my third watch of this hour long masterpiece
I wonder if Deus is still gonna cover the rest of the franchise when he returns or if this was one & done. Would love to hear his thoughts on the reboot since it was suprisingly pretty dang good & was expertly casted
The fact you said that is proof I absolutely need to do videos on "the rocks wacky video game adventures" cause I still maintain they are terrible stain on this films legacy.
@@deusdeaconReviews ha well enough😆 I'm sure any points you make I will agree with as I usually do, since you actually explain your opinions with reasons & research instead of just throwing it out there with no context like most big "Review" channels. Im mostly speaking of the first Rock one, I remember the sequel was not that great. Besides the dated CGI, the original will hold the test of time, can't say that for the Rock films
I have to wonder if the game HAD to keep Allen alive while he was in the board. There's what the hunter said in the movie, of course, but we see how the board is restricted by its own rules and has to deliver on its promises. Yes, much like a monkey's paw wish, it's free to interpret the rules as it desires, but there are some clear cut details that leave no room for an attorney's playhouse. The particular details I'm referring to is how the board clearly states that Allen would be returned upon another player rolling a 5 or an 8. Well, it can't do that if Allen should happen to die while in the thick Hasbro Jungles of the Board. How else could you explain a 12-year-old boy of privilege who grew up in a small town, who went in with no training, no supplies, and no guide; being able to survive on his own? Yes, the board MUST deliver on its promises -- something Allen couldn't have know -- but it doesn't mean the board couldn't make his life a living hell until then.
I absolutely love your reviews. I've re-watched all of them a good few times already, and I still enjoy them immensely. Thank you so much for making these still, your presentation and narrative styles are a great inspiration. I watched this without even realizing the video was almost an hour long! Also, I really liked Robin Williams when I was a kid, but I only ever heard him dubbed over. I never realized how much there was lost in translation until much later.
First off...how’d I miss this.... Secondly the Imboca greeting....HOLY CRAP HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THAT WAS AN AWESOME CALL BACK!!!! You’re a frigging rockstar mate
I can't wait for the next movies in this Jumanji series! I know you've got a few series going on, and school, so it might be a while. But this review was the best I've seen of this film - so much detail and background information. I just loved it! Great work, as always!
I’m just glad you found it, I recommend following the twitter or facebook page if you want to be notified of new videos as UA-cam isn’t much bothered with doing that.
41:25 Van Pelt missing could just be for the fear factor of it. Constantly wondering "Is this the day he kills me?", "How long can my luck hold out?" So on. The fear of not if but when. constantly on his mind. Can only kill him once, but can mess with him mentally day in and day out for as long as his mind can hold out. So I don't agree about the game showing mercy. Also my main complaint about the new gun he gets is that scope that searches for a head target not to mention it's as if it controls where the bullet goes. A lighted sight will look as if it moves depending on how you move your head. Also why moving and shooting is hard, his is way to out there even for a kids movie
@@deusdeaconReviews Then there are the most recent movies, i don't know your opinion on them, but, personally i don't like them, and not even Jack Black acting like a teenage girl saves them for me.
@@deusdeaconReviews should've stayed until the end, those movies remind me of the cartoon, but worse, what made me like the old movie was the surprise of just what each dice roll would bring into our world and the likeable characters.
I always thought the game would always take the players back in time because no matter how small the first thing to come out of the game was it would still have some consequence on their lives, meaningful or not.
I already new this damn game was insidious, but you somehow brought up more evidence of it's malevolence. Good job! And thanks for talking about this film. It's one of my childhood faves and you also brought up a lot of stuff I have missed. -BTW, I think you missed another little flub. Shouldn't it have been Alan's turn before Sarah's? Maybe the writers forgot or they wanted to push the story quicker.- (Nevermind, I messed up. He threw the figure pieces not the dice.)
Oh! Another way the game screws with Alan! Let's assume Sarah _did_ stay and continue the game to try and get him back...what if she didn't roll a 5 or 8? How the hell is Alan supposed to roll the dice?! He's IN the game! Maybe she could've tried to convince others to play which would make the game longer..and be *deadlier* .
Hey Deus, sorry to throw out a bit of a heavy story here, but I really just felt like I had to do a bit of sharing. Your channel has always been one of my absolute favorites, to the point where it was actually one of the first channels I really felt deserved a "Subscribe" and was actually worth making an account to engage with even a bit. Almost exactly a month ago was my 33rd birthday, and as bad as things in general have been for just about everyone lately, overall I have a decent job and had been taking (honestly, quite a lot of) much needed time on my own after an incredibly damaging relationship, and most luckily of all I'd always been in very good health (I had never been in an ambulance or been admitted to a hospital in my life, and I've always been an active person.) Even despite some incredibly hurtful (both emotionally and financially) family issues that have been going on, overall things were going all right and I was nearing content. Then, about 10 days ago, I suddenly experienced massive heart failure and a heart attack which has cut the function of my heart in half for the rest of my life (which has also been significantly shortened as well). It has been such a surreal experience, to go from a clean bill of health to this situation. I know I haven't even really started to process anything, but being able to watch the classics and not so classics of my favorite genre (as well as discovering a good few more new ones than I thought were left.) has been far more of a comfort than you guys, or even I, could have realized and I am truly appreciative. I've been home about 3 days now, so having a new Deus episode is quite the pleasant surprise. So let me finally wrap up all my nonsense, and just say I love the work you do and I truly appreciate all the entertainment you've given, thank you very much and never stop, seriously. Oh, and everyone else, as much as you may or may not appreciate the things and people you have around you, start doing it more often, and start doing it out loud. Trust me.
@@deusdeaconReviews No worries man, life happens unfortunately, and all you can do is keep living it until your meat suit craps out. Seriously though, I know how hard it can be to see the value in the things we create ourselves (for myself, at the least, probably others) but being passionate about a thing, and even more importantly the sharing of that thing, is what actually allows us to create things of real value, and I respect the hell out of what you've pulled off along the lines of that theory. That is all, cheers.
This is my Third time watching this video, not only was this one of the best Video essays and film analysis so far. But its really helping me get through a not so good start to my week. I can't wait for the rest of the series.
I have always considered Zathura to be a guilty pleasure. I know it's nowhere near as good as Jumanji but honestly I still have some fun with it. Maybe because I was a kid when I saw it and it has that nostalgia effect on me. Also because I really liked the design of the Zathura game prop. It's got problems for sure but it has a soft spot in my heart.
I lost count of how many times I've watched Jumanji since I was a kid, and I thought I've appreciated/understood/pondered it enough to not view it in more ways than I already have, but this review + analysis gave me lil gems about it I never noticed before... I love that! ^_^ And I really like how I now found your channel and can see you're onto more 90s films that I also find amazing... that era of cinema was super fantastic to grow up in, yet I don't run into a lot of YT channels doing reviews for them since they get pushed deeper down into obscurity as time passes and piles on tons of other decent titles. I hope you'll bring more brilliant films like this into your channel... SUBBED 👍
“Why the jumanji sequels missed the point” THANK YOU SO MUCH! I’ve been trying to tell my friends why I don’t like these films that much and I haven’t been able to fully put it into words of why they feel just so off. I’m super excited for the next video.
The first Jumanji film is a Modern Dark Fairy-tale. Zathura is a Children's Fantasy/Adventure movie. Jumanji: The Next Level is the modern intellectually bankrupt film industry continuing it's tradition of vampirizing anything with name recognition to try to squeeze a profit out of it with advertising campaigns and by stuffing it with "Big Hollywood Stars".
New viewer of your stuff, i very much hope you decide to keep posting videos as well as the videos on the new jumanji movies. Your videos are great and would be happy to subscribe if i see more are coming.
Still one of my favorite movies as well. The gun store scene would still be my favorite in the movie even if it ended with "they stopped making these in 1903". Sadly the commentary on America's gun culture is still just as relevant as it was 25 years ago.
Always was one of my favorite movies - with an added bonus since I was able to see the split-in-half house up close while working at Lucas. Lots of the old models and set pieces were around the campus, finding this one made it feel like a scavenger hunt since none of my coworkers had noticed it yet, so we made a game of who could find the most obscure pieces and how long they'd stay hidden from the others.
Funny thing, and this could be just me, but I swear that when the monkey comes out of the fridge, I hear it saying "Not you" to Allen, suggesting they've encountered him before and it recognizes him.
I'm only a couple minutes in but already I adore this explanation/ interpretation of this movie (one of my childhood favourites as well). I have never once thought of the game itself being semi if not wholly sentient. God I love your reviews.
Both this and the animated series were what made me enjoy this board game; though I do blame the film for inspiring my love for playing Big Game Hunters in the Call of Cthulhu tabletop game.
Great video! I didn't notice the many layers this film had. For me what keeps it from being a classic is the bad CGI. I remember thinking it was bad even in 1995. I hated the way the monkeys looked! This is a rare instance where I would love it if they update the visual effects. All the practical stuff is great!

something to point out about the "plot hole that's Alen's locked room" as Deus said, yea she just didnt get to it. as she was cleaning the other part of the house first, call the locksmith when get to it.. but then when in the attic, heard the strange noise and yup, call the exterminator first, cause frankly who are you gonna call first? someone to get a stuck door unlock or something to rid of a possible infestation of who knows what kind of critters out of the house?, then she goes into town to do other things more important, a stuck door is just that- they probably would have gotten to it the very next day if none of the game stuff happened when they happened
There are actually a few deleted scenes on the Blu-Ray/4K re-release that extend the ending and show off the shoes and interaction with the children.
Also, it implies that they moved away after Alan's father retired, and that they didn't die in 1991, likely from broken hearts!
I really enjoyed this. A great video. Not like other reviews, where ppl just say what happens and whether they like the film or not, but an actual break down. Jumanji, Critters, Gremlins, ET and The Spiderwick Chronicles, were all favorites of mine.
I appreciate that, Glad you enjoyed the video
Eeeeehhh! Somebody else remembers Spiderwick! Was OBSESSED with that film. Had almost all the books, the movie, and the video game.
I always wondered why the Aunt would want to open such a decadent hotel in such a derelict city
Also, regarding that "Louise" scene.
I have a theory that was the owner of that particular gun store.
Thanks so much, Glad you like the Videos!
First off...how’d I miss this....
Secondly the Imboca greeting....HOLY CRAP HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA THAT WAS AN AWESOME CALL BACK!!!!
You’re a frigging rockstar mate
This was a wonderful review, seeing your enthusiasm for this film made my day
Thank you I’m really glad you enjoyed it
Well done! Your best review.
Thank you for making this video
Hype, Been waiting for this!!!
I can't wait for the next movies in this Jumanji series! I know you've got a few series going on, and school, so it might be a while. But this review was the best I've seen of this film - so much detail and background information. I just loved it! Great work, as always!
I can't believe I am just now seeing this in my feed! What an amazing review. Your love for the movie and the lore really shows.
I’m just glad you found it, I recommend following the twitter or facebook page if you want to be notified of new videos as UA-cam isn’t much bothered with doing that.
@@deusdeaconReviews Will do sir!
I now cannot wait for the sequel video
Liked immediately and stuck around for the whole thing. One of your best uploads yet. This made me day
I didn’t realise I fell asleep to this video last night ! I’ll rewatch it now ! Thanks mate
Today I Learned there is a Jumanji franchise and not just the Robin Williams movie.
I'm so sorry about that, but hey the cartoon has a few watchable episodes at least
@@deusdeaconReviews Then there are the most recent movies, i don't know your opinion on them, but, personally i don't like them, and not even Jack Black acting like a teenage girl saves them for me.
you probably didnt see the end of the video i hate those films.
@@deusdeaconReviews should've stayed until the end, those movies remind me of the cartoon, but worse, what made me like the old movie was the surprise of just what each dice roll would bring into our world and the likeable characters.
@Deusdaecon Reviews This is yet another example of giving us what NOBODY wanted... thanks Hollywood...😒
I always thought the game would always take the players back in time because no matter how small the first thing to come out of the game was it would still have some consequence on their lives, meaningful or not.
Great review here man, you deserve more subscribers.
I love these reviews.
I binge watch them most days.
glad you enjoy them, Thank you so much.
Oh man "Jumanji". And 1 hour. Thx you.
This movie will always be a timeless classic in my opinion. It will be loved by both children and adults
Oh now this makes my weekend thank you for such great videos
An hour long discussion of Jumanji? Hell, and may I add yes. Never thought about it as kids first Hellraiser but damn that scans.
Trust me.
Thank you for sharing, I’m Sorry you’re going through such a tough time I cant even imagine, but I’m glad the videos can be of some help to you
@@deusdeaconReviews No worries man, life happens unfortunately, and all you can do is keep living it until your meat suit craps out.
I feel like it's weird that my favorite film reviewer is so small, I always look forward to uploads keep em long if you can.
well I really appreciate you watching
This is great! I've been waiting for this since you brought it up in one of your streams. I love the movie, too.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Well this just made my day. Thanks for the great content! Much love from Canada ✌🏻
It's criminal that you don't have more subscribers. I love your reviews. Thank you for your content.
This is my new favorite review
I lost count of how many times I've watched Jumanji since I was a kid, and I thought I've appreciated/understood/pondered it enough to not view it in more ways than I already have, but this review + analysis gave me lil gems about it I never noticed before... I love that! ^_^
And I really like how I now found your channel and can see you're onto more 90s films that I also find amazing... that era of cinema was super fantastic to grow up in, yet I don't run into a lot of YT channels doing reviews for them since they get pushed deeper down into obscurity as time passes and piles on tons of other decent titles.
I hope you'll bring more brilliant films like this into your channel... SUBBED 👍
What a great breakdown
When a review is so good you have to watch it twice within a few days! (and hey, it'll make the algorithm happy if I watch it on youtube too haha)
i feel like Van Pelt is supposed to be a parody of the villain from the most dangerous game novel
Good to see you putting out another great review, and one for one of my favorite films too!

It's awesome to see you back making videos again man
Still one of my favorite movies as well. The gun store scene would still be my favorite in the movie even if it ended with "they stopped making these in 1903". Sadly the commentary on America's gun culture is still just as relevant as it was 25 years ago.
I really need to watch this movie again.
I think thats just a bit of pareidolia on your part.
RIP Robin Williams
I have always adored that film
I'm only a couple minutes in but already I adore this explanation/ interpretation of this movie (one of my childhood favourites as well). I have never once thought of the game itself being semi if not wholly sentient. God I love your reviews.
Both this and the animated series were what made me enjoy this board game; though I do blame the film for inspiring my love for playing Big Game Hunters in the Call of Cthulhu tabletop game.
Deusdaecon is the only UA-camr who gets an instant 👍from me before the video even starts playing.
Great video! I didn't notice the many layers this film had. For me what keeps it from being a classic is the bad CGI. I remember thinking it was bad even in 1995. I hated the way the monkeys looked! This is a rare instance where I would love it if they update the visual effects. All the practical stuff is great!
