After delaying his video for more than a year, I finally got done with Zak Gramarye. I tried (a lot) to not let the comic "Zak Gramarye is a jerk" affect me when writing this vid, and I tried to focus on the sympathetic parts of his lore and character. But don't expect to see him in my vids anytime soon again, he's not a fun character to write. Not at all xD
P.S.: due to his small screentime and importance, I deemed that making Nahyuta's scarf animation loop properly, was not worth the time and effort. So... sorry if he seems weird while talking.
Well, I'm quite glad you set the "Zak is an ass" POV aside for the most part. It worked really well. Your storytelling is getting better and better as time goes by, and I say that as a part-time writer myself.

I remember seeing a post before of your (justified) distain towards Zak. All the more reason why writing a character you hate is such an achievement. This felt like a great epilogue to Apollo Justice, another classic Debastian W.

@@Easypickles one of the reasons I did it is because I wanted to showcase that Rayfa and Nahyuta are foreigners. But I won't lie, the main reason is because I like their japanese voices better xD

It's pretty ironic that Zak is bewildered by Krishtoph's motive for his murder (which is ego), while a portion of his own "revenge" on Phoenix is also because of his ego (of winning poker).
P.S your interpretation of his character is spot on! This channel is basically the unofficial lore of ace attorney now!

This was, in my opinion, the best interpretation of Zak Gramarye I've ever seen. Sure, he is still a terrible person at the end of the day, but this storytelling really lets you understand that, despite it all, his intentions(when it came to Trucy and Valant) were in the right place. Fantastic stuff m8, keep up the good work.

My favorite part was Maya's commenting on Wright talking with a lot of disdain towards Zak. Phoenix is probably absolutely livid about Zak disappearing and abandoning Trucy, no matter his reasoning. Probably more angry about that then his plan to destroy Phoenix's win record.
Yeah, I also want to think that Phoenix's beef with Zak was mainly the fact that he wanted to protect Valant so much, he ended up hiding Magnifi's will from Phoenix (and Kristoph), which more or less is what lead to Phoenix's disbarment

There's definitively a video to do about Wright's trauma here. Seeing how Thalassa reacts after 4:10, I can't shake the idea out of my mind. Even Maya is taken aback.
Don't forget that Wright knows full well Thalassa can "perceive" lies, so everything he said to her, he said it intentionally
@@debastiansebeste I know, and that's the weird thing. Why does he have to lie, not once but many times there? What does he have to hide, while he knows her ability?
I can see Zak is dazed by the fact that Wright won in that poker game, yet he's on a full resentment on Wright over this. We're over a simple misplaced pride there, and this was the reason Zak lied to Thalassa about his relation with Phoneix.
However, I wouldn't be surprised if Thalassa (or Maya / Edgeworth, I don't forget them) bears the magatama and sees red and black psyche-locks over him. He really looks at unease, doesn't want to see him. He could wait in the room with Trucy but no. He litteraly goes elsewhere. He doesn't want to stand near him, and this can't be overlooked.

Is it any different for Thalassa who knows every word is a lie? No. But for Phoenix, saying the obvious lie that Thalassa will read, is much easier than telling her in her face "I despise your dead husband and don't ask me again".

13:04 Considering how Phoenix was the one to give Apollo that forged evidence through Trucy that lead to Kristoph's undoing...He's not completely wrong. He did use Trucy in that regards, whether she volunteered or not. Again that trial reeked to high heaven, and Apollo was the true victim in all of it.
As cool as 4-1 is, what Phoenix did to Apollo in that trial was blatant character assassination. He didn't even show remorse for it, ever.
I'll also say, although its unrelated a bit, in a alternate universe where Phoenix's character was more accurately portrayed in 4-1, and he didn't screw over Apollo, he would've absolutely told the court by the end of the trial that the card he showed was fake. The court already had more than enough evidence to convict Kristoph by the end, and the card being revealed to be a fake wouldn't change that.
@@anthonym9977 His actions in 4-1 aren't that far removed from 3-3 though. The biggest difference being that 4-1 points out the sketchiness of Wright's actions while 3-3 kinda glazes over it. In both cases though, an essentially worthless piece of evidence is presented as the smoke and gun to trap the true culprit. I don't really see 4-1 as the blatant character assassination that most others do, frankly.
@phoenixwright784 im not saying Phoenix lying about evidence to trick the witness to revealing they are the culprit is out of character, what i am saying is that Phoenix betrayed and jeprodized Apollos career without even asking if he was ok to do such a thing, and never even apologizes to him. That is a massive character assassination. For gosh sake, in 3-3 Phoenix says to Maya "There are 2 things i find unforgivable. Poisoning, and Betrayal"
And Phoenix has shown time and time again, that the truth is really important to him, so like i said, in an alternate universe where Phoenix used the card the same way he did to get Kristoph, without screwing over Apollo, he would 100 percent tell the court about his deception. The court has more than enough evidence to convict, and the card being revealed to be forged wouldn't change that

It's easy to end up saying Zak is an asshole, because he ended up being one after all that happened after Thalassa's disappearance... He did lost much and because of his own decisions he lost even more, there's sympathy to be had with this guy and I think you did well giving a more human side to the character without inmediately saying he's just a bad person
It's kind of a shame that Wright and Zak couldn't meet again, but it was reasonable, the guy was still having a grudge and it took a lot of convincing from Thalassa to calm him down, he was probs a vengeful spirit because of his death... Shows how good Maya is as a medium now too! Props for using your tools to make the channeling scene too!!
I can't wait for the next part! Jove Justice doesn't have written dialogue I think, so I'm very excited to see how's your take on the guy!
Yeah, compared to Zak, Jove is more or less a blank sheet so I can take many liberties when it comes to his personality. So I expect he'll be much easier and more fun to write than Zak (though that's a low bar lmao, gotta say writing Zak was a nightmare, but at the very least he had existing sprites, while for Jove I'll have to make his from scratch xD)
Well, my headcanon for his grudge against Phoenix is that he believed that Phoenix fabricated this evidence in court. So he hadn't just lost to somebody, he lost to a man ready to cheat. A man who fooled him into thinking that he is the honest man. And then Phoenix was caught and starts to play poker and never lost in 7 years probably through cheating.
Zak could have thought that he was exposing a real cheater even through the forged evidence (5 of Hearts). And it makes another callback to the whole topic of using forged evidence.
Honestly, I think you handled Zak the best way you could’ve handled him. Listen, this man is either an absolute jerk, an absolute moron, or both if you just focused on how most fans saw him. I believe this was probably the best way of showing how AA4 intended his character to be without letting personal biases dictate the writing. He was properly called out for the awful stuff he did and attempted to do to Phoenix and Trucy while still treating him like a three dimensional character who had reasons that are cohesive, at least by the standards of this mess of a character. Great work.

I always wonder why Zak was such a ass to Phoenix who tied so hard to save him and why he tried to ruin him by exposing him as a cheat but when Zak explained his reasons because of Trucy as well as his bitterment of having lost everything. It made so much sense and it felt so in character. Good job

I dislike Zak very much but what I love most about writing characters is the protential for depth. This depiction of Zak felt human. I can find myself kinda sympathising with him.

I do have this theory that Trucy forged the card herself, and Phoenix took the rap. Mostly because how on earth would he be able to make the card in the first place. Sure you could argue that he somehow got a card and got blood on it somehow, but how would he give it to Trucy?
Trucy probably had some idea of what was going on and forged the card.
Phoenix took the blame because he didn’t want her to have a criminal record if it got out.
Not to mention the forged card wasn’t technically ‘evidence’ neither Apollo or Phoenix claimed the card they had was the real deal.
Now THAT'S absolute pure cinema!!!! The best plot in AA fandom I've ever watched and yet there IS PART 6.

I did want to have Phoenix talk with Zak, but not only did every single second of their interaction turn completely bitter and hostile, I also doubted Phoenix would willingly want to speak with him ever again. Now if something were to happen in a future video where Phoenix is forced to speak with Zak... that remains to be seen. Glad you liked it ;D

In hindsight, it's actually kind of sad that Maya referenced Dahlia. At the time, she was chanelling Dahlia so she should have no memory of it and was only informed of what happened from Mia. So for her to flash back to the trial, means that Maya went out of her way to watch a recording of the trial.
I admit I was wondering if someone would think about that particular issue, but my viewers don't surprise me anymore xD
Truth be told, the way I wrote it I simply imagined that Phoenix himself told Maya everything, about what happened. But ngl Mia being the one to tell her works as well

I couldn't watch this part earlier because I didn't watched the other parts first, so I did a lil marathon on this story (I did this today) and after watching them, once again, they are masterpieces! And masterpieces like these deserve way more views than current are. It is incredible how the times pass by and your skills in telling stories (for me, this one is canon already) is outstanding to watch. Like the complexity yet simplicity at the same time, the speed text of it (lol cause it's easy to read but fast at the same time 😂👌🏻), how well you portrait these characters, etc, always keep near to the games (I mean, how it feels canon). "Easy" you say. I say that it's another challenge, since there is so little to work with. He didn't do a lot of key actions. He didn't have on screen dialog.

God damn. I knew you could work your magic on one of the most terribly written characters in the series, and you pulled it off with aplomb. I can tell how hard the progression was because of just how difficult it is to rationalize anything he does. Even now there are areas in which he still feels like a petty jerk, such as sabotaging Phoenix's poker career.
The poker stuff was the main thing that held me back from making this video for more than a year. I couldn't think of anything better than "my unbeatability in poker was the last thing that held me together through all the hardships" to justify his nonsense even slightly tbh lol
Ya know Shadi sure is weird when it comes to Phoenix, he is thankful he raised his daughter yet hates him. Sure is a dichotomy. And puts more into context why Phoenix said he had nothing to say to Zak. Like loathe him like he did Dahlia.

Good thing no one mentioned Mr Reus trying to get Trucy convicted of murder to Shadi. He'd get quite upset of that, I'm sure.
Matter of fact, in the initial version of the script Thalassa did talk with Zak about Retinz. But the video had turned out too long (it's already 25 mins), plus I felt it interrupted the pacing a bit, so I had to drop Retinz altogether :(
I cracked up hard when maya got thrown in jail.
So we are going to get a Jove video at some point then? Cool!

I mean, I understand CAPCOM can only do so much trying to do a lot in the games. Don't get me wrong, they have consistently done a great job making the cases.
But doesn't change the fact for me that the potential storytelling/background/lore of the characters they made in the series is just left mostly unfulfilled. You showed with these vids that they can be greatly utilized.

just a question, why is Thalassa adressing Zak as Shadi instead of his real name?
......this is actually a mistake many people make.
Here's the thing. Shadi Enigmar is his birth name (hence why his "fake" identity when he was hiding for 7 years, was "Shadi Smith"). "Zak Gramarye" is the stage name given to him (probably by his mentor, Magnifi).
Matter of fact, Trucy's birth name also is Trucy Enigmar because of Zak's real name

Nop xDD I admit I knew someone could misunderstand the sfx's usage as Trucy lying at that point (which would make no sense, as even if she were lying, only Thalassa and Apollo should be able to sense it, not Zak). Thing is, I do often use the heartbeat sfx for when someone is crying (most notably used it last time when Ema started crying after her two fights with Angel Starr in Lana's Parole
As for the 3d zoom out, yeah. I wanted to make a scene with Maya's channeling animation dance-of-deduction style a long time now, and I felt it would be fitting and funny to do it with her in prison xD

Genuinely, the cutscene directing chops on display here are staggering. So is all the rest of it (writing, timing, etc.), but I really want to call out the overarching combination of those things. I don't know what you're doing as a career (or are planning to get into, if you're not there yet), but I really, really hope it's got something to do with animation direction.
That actually makes me quite happy to hear. Unfortunately my career is completely irrelevant to this stuff (I'm a physics graduate) but I do hope I get into the manga industry someday (not a fan of animation, but I do love the process of directing frames when making manga)

I Think I remember Mael Stronghart was telling Kazuma Asogi that he heard that Genshin's Ring being forged evidence from Inspector Gregson was only heard so it doesn't count as he dismisses it as hearsay since well Kazuma only heard that from Gregson and now Gregson is dead and he is like or are you going to summon his (Gregson's) ghost. So I think I would like to see a video where for some reason Maya gets time traveled to the past in victorian Era london and she channels Gregson's spirit.
That would probably be a real hoot to see and the mayhem that ensues. Maybe Gregson would now that he is dead has nothing to hide about his involvement in the framing of Genshin and also who his boss was aka Mael Stronghart and etc. It also might clear up a lot of things like that Seishiro Jigoku was hired to kill Gregson and this blows everything out into the open and etc. Heck even Herlock Sholmes would probably be blown away by Maya Fey channeling Klint van Zieks, Genshin Asogi, and Tobias Gregson and what they have to say about the evils of Mael Stronghart.

1) Zak didn't choose his attorney based on victory. He'd have chosen Phoenix even if Phoenix had lost. All he wanted was to see the man behind the cards, the real Phoenix. The reason he dismissed Gavin was because he realized Gavin was rotten to the core.
2) Phoenix straight up told Zak about Apollo in the club before Zak's death
