i love the way if your a skateboarder its considered un-cool to where a helmet and pads but if your a long boarder its the done and normal thing im glad
Make sure all of your movements are smooth. If you go down too fast, that will translate into a spin. Also, be sure to look where you want to go, and maybe go a little faster. Other than that, try to meet up with some local skaters, that's the best way to learn!
Make sure that you're not coming down too fast or trying to push it out too hard. Either of those will give you too much momentum and you end up spinning around.
Check out the first pause in the video before the slide. It's all about doing that stuff slowly and smoothly. Getting low or turning your body too quickly gives you a lot of momentum so you end up just spinning. Also, be sure to have your puck ON the ground before trying to initiate the slide.
I tried this advice about having the puck on the ground before initiating the slide and it works so well for me. I wish someone had told me this earlier. Thanks bro!!
This is the most helpful video on coleman slide I've seen so far. Breaking down the slide in slowmotion is much more helpful than showing dry practice and a really quick slide.
Awesome tutorial 6 years later! I didn't realize that folding my foot down would be such an important detail. I'll try that, maybe it'll help me pendulum out further.
This is one of the best tutorials on doing a Coleman. Adjusting the transfer of weight back to the lead foot aids in coming out of the slide to continue on. Great work Dan!!
Like your mentioning of the helmet. I fell trying a backside slide and landed on my head and had unfortunately put my board and helmet in the car. Fell and got knocked out. Had a bleed on my brain and needed surgery on it to fix it. Spent like 2-3 weeks in the hospital and 6 months in rehab. Still going to therapy for my legs. Haven't been able to longboard since I fell. Just hoping one day I can get this all behind me and get back on a board
There is no set method for a Coleman slide. Hell, there is no set method for absolutely ANYTHING in skateboarding. Ever heard of a predrift? In a heelside predrift it almost makes no sense not to grab rail behind your back leg, because you can so easily moderate the amount of slide, how slow you want to get to and so much more control going around a corner. With a lot of practice you can get those predrifts to the point where you can very easily control the wear on your wheels. YOU don't no shit
best vidio i have seen of a Coleman slide i wanna try it out but im just wondering I dont have good like road in the nearest hill would that effect my slide alot or would it go just fine? im a bigginer and i have been on cruches because i fell of my board once (i did not break anything) Thanks for the Video man Keep it up :D
Heh, This would have been helpfull... I got a new Ladera longboard, and went down a street at 20KPH, it was a sharp left turn, and i knew i couldnt carve it, and i didnt know how to slide that well.. Ended up bashing my tailbone, knee, hip, and a gash in my hand on a concrete curb.
How fast do you think you were going in this video? If i wear denim, do you think its enough to prevent road rash at a speed like this? i hate getting road rash on my ass because everytime i sit i can feel it
I can't bring the board back in, I can do a 180 perfectly but to get back in my goofy stance I have to switch 180 stand up. How do you do the other part of the pendulum motion and bring it in? Do you kick out your front foot? Do you lift your back leg? I've tried both
Awesome video. & i don't understand why everyone is complaining about the name. If it IS a stinkbug, does it really make a difference in what you just watched? Take your damn hand off the board and go skate
@DeepBlue10055 nice vid! my wheels are sayshun plasma A+ 78a and i cant kick my board hard especially that it is heelside and it is a puckdown slide so how fast should i go?
Which kind of wheels are you using in this movie? I have a 81a and I'm having a lot of difficulty to do it! I simply don't slide and I'm getting afraid of going faster because I can't stop safely!!
Hey man, it's a bit daunting doing it at speed... anything that you could say to help me get over that stuff (fear and all of that) because it's pretty scary!
i can get the slide down its just for some reason i cant get back up on my board. im physically fit and everything so thats not the problem so can anyone help me.
It comes with time, you just have to work on your flexibility. OR, you can google image search "Coleman slide," a lot of people do it differently. Just don't grab in between your legs!
Absolutely, if you're not going at least jogging speed it won't work. Anyway, this slide is meant to kill speed, so is most useful when you are going fast and want to stop.
One thing he doesn't explain quite well is the weight. How do you balance your weight after the first step of the slide? I got that at some point you only have your weight on the front foot but what happens afterwards?
I've tried that and I keep falling on my butt, so I'll have to work on my weight distribution. But I have another problem. From street skating I can do stand up slides. But it is too grippy. The wheels are 78a, which isn't supersoft, but also not that hard. I always come to a complete stop after a short slide. Is it the wheels, the ground, am I just not going fast enough or is this normal? I can't control my speed like that. How could I ever do a coleman slide if the wheels just don't slide?
When learning, try to start at a solid running pace. This should be just around 15 mph. And those wheels are pretty grippy, a board with no flex and good concave will help lock you in. Otherwise, just lean back more to compensate!
i love the way if your a skateboarder its considered un-cool to where a helmet and pads but if your a long boarder its the done and normal thing im glad
theduckster1804 thats what i really like about the longboarding community, no judgement and even the professional videos are stressing safety gear
You get fun of for not wearing a helmet, and not the other way around.
@@rustyshackleford3278 try LIAM morgan :D
Yeah and if you don’t wear a helmet they often won’t allow you in groups, the longboarding community is way better then skateboarding community
@@tt3k no in skateboarding at least in some places you get made fun of for wearing pads, but in long boarding it’s the other way around
Go faster, lean back more, and put your hand farther behind you on the pavement. Good luck!
im right handed and ride goofy
Same here.

Anybody else think he looks like a slightly cooler McLovin
yes!!!
Funny, can't coleman slide but can do all the heelside standup slides over 30ft. Found this helpful, thanks!

as lose as you are comfortable with. More turn = easier slide
Make sure that you're not coming down too fast or trying to push it out too hard. Either of those will give you too much momentum and you end up spinning around.
I used to live in Clark hall. Class of 2010. Thanks for the video!

Thanks, that was a really helpful tutorial!
This was the best tutorial i have seen yet
This really helped me improove my coleys :D thanks
wearing pads really helps. if you know that you won't get hurt when you fall it definitely gives you confidence.
i love this vid it helped alot thank you
This is the most helpful video on coleman slide I've seen so far. Breaking down the slide in slowmotion is much more helpful than showing dry practice and a really quick slide.
Having trouble bringing it back straight I always do a 180
Hope you're having fun getting hostile on a chill skateboarding video. It doesn't matter, skate how you want if it works for you.
Leather gardening gloves ;)
Thanks a lot! I will replay these words in my head next time I'm practicing
Awesome tutorial 6 years later! I didn't realize that folding my foot down would be such an important detail. I'll try that, maybe it'll help me pendulum out further.
thank you so much! ive just been out side and done it after an hour of practicing, your video was very helpful:)
I want to learn some variations of this slide.
spooks walrus Then go ahead! practice makes perfect
Harry I don't know any and I haven't seen any :(
Then make some up! Do some spins and stuff ! Haha
Harry I'll try a spin next time I'm riding :D
Haha sick man! Let me know how its goes :)
That's a fucking stink bug a Coleman is where you don't have you hand under the board
alright bro whatever you say, i bet you know more about skating than i do -___-
i do broo
bryan mcjerald no that's a stinkbug.
IntellGB Stinkbug is if you grab differently.
Emmanuel Makras good joke bro!

yeah, this was really helpful for me while Im learning...nice one (::::::::
What are some good slide gloves that are around $50 for a guy just learning to slide?
can you do this without putting your hand down? I usually dont ride with gloves. Can you do like a standup slide and how would you do it?
Not likely. Gloves are really useful for sliding. Standup slides are fun but as with all things take practice.
GET. THE. GLOVES. Believe me. They'll make your life a lot easier.

Nope. Stinkbug is grabbing between your legs. Go ask any skater.

Coleman you dont grab rail, u leave your front hand in the air and push the board out, what you are showing is called a grab rail or 'STINK BUG'
ok, so even if i cant kick my board i just puck down and sway my upper body to the direction i want to go? and put some pressure on back foot.
Yo...very informative ...what area are u in?
Great tutorial! What is your wheel's durometer? I have 80 a that are quite grippy so i can initiate the slide but cant bring it back
im 5'6" 120, with a 45.5 board and 80a abec 11 zigzags 70mm, am i doing something wrong or what? but i cant slide it just grips
Can I create a video response so you can help me out, because i can coleman 180 at any speed but i can't
come back?
nope. stinkbug is only when you grab between your legs.
the problem i have is that i can only do a 180 coleman without grabbing my board, but i cant slide my board back so i can continue riding :(
One thing he doesn't explain quite well is the weight. How do you balance your weight after the first step of the slide? I got that at some point you only have your weight on the front foot but what happens afterwards?
The faster the better, the first attempts I did were at a snail pace just going down my street and I fell so many times
It's something that comes with practice, but go faster! More speed gives you more slide time to work with.
He is riding Mongo (regular) dude. Goofy is when your left foot is in the back and does the pushing.
i go really fast and look forward like u say to do and i end up doing a 180 help please thanks !!!
i just losened my trucks, alot and i can slide better but still ill try to shorten my wheel base.
After doing a colman slide i am at the 180 and i cant bring the board back to my original stance while keeping the slide going, how do i do that?
get yourself a pair of crashpants/ bumsavers man - makes all the difference in the world!
when I do this I just get really tight turns not sliding am I not going fast enough?
fuck the haters man....good tutorial. thorough and very well detailed. much respect.!
never been a problem for me. Just regular wear, unless you're pulling up on the rail.
Both of you need to chill. As long as you aren't grabbing stinkbug, it's not wrong.
I'm scared of my board smashing into the curb and breaking not hurting myself
Did you place your whole left foot on the board,( the one that is not bent)?
I cant get out of the slide and keep going, any idea of what im doing wrong?
like I said before, running speed or about 10-15 mph is fine for learning.
damn.... my knees can't fold like that!
I having trouble doing this one I will try your tips
I keep going over the toe side of the board, what am I doing wrong?
Haha. Were you the guy trying to sell that board on East Coast BST?
went out, tried it, and just realised how fucking fast he was going.
It's not a true Coleman if you grab rail bud.
#CliffColeman4Lyfe
ok ill try both, i dont think i can shorten the base too much.
I can't fold my legs like him would someone help me please ):
You don't grab rail. It will cause uneven wearing of wheels.
Looks like someone doesn't know what a stinkbug is... lmao
sure why not, just this guy was pissing me off so.
Please help me, is speed a vital point to do it?:)
I learned to do a Coleman from this video.
This is a stink bug, a coleman you dont grab rail
Go faster. Put more weight on the puck. Commit.
How much weight is on your hand vs. the board?
Thanks Dan from 10 years ago
Coleman slide with seismic trucks. Yes or no?
Straight to the point! Thanks!
Which is the best wheel to slide like that?
I tried to do this once. Ended up in a bush
If you could do a 'goofy'/left-handed version I'd appreciate it!
Hahaha Learned to do it with both already. I think all you standard riders are just as crazy as you probably think us goofy riders are.
+Alex Sarglepp if youre on a tutorial video you probably didnt know how to slide regularly therefore youre too dumb to figure it out as well
i actually did it thanks to this video
Thanks bro!!!!!! Bought some blood orange gloves and learned it today. Very helpful.
Claude Martin I think you should try with some higher durometer, like 83a or above
Most basic slide is the push-up slide
Best tutorial hands down
Great video thanks !!!
good video, very helpful
When learning, try to start at a solid running pace. This should be just around 15 mph. And those wheels are pretty grippy, a board with no flex and good concave will help lock you in. Otherwise, just lean back more to compensate!
How lose should I set my trucks?
haha yup. There's no other takeover like that but I'm buddies with Comet guys so it's easier for me to get a hold of unique stuff from the factory.
This video helped so much
I can’t break the wheels free, going about 20 ish and always just carve really hard
Put more weight on your hand, really lean back onto it.
