Also shadowguard could proc the Blackout talent, so enemies attacking the troll priest could get stunned just by hitting them. Pretty handy against a rogue opener.
It also stacked shadow weaving and dealt a pretty significant shadow damage since it has busted scaling. Basically like lightning shield but stacks on top of that with all shadowpriest buffs like shadowform and the mentioned shadowweaving. Very strong against melees since they will be eating 600+ hits per orb in TBC. Troll shadowpriest with this and especially hex with healing reduction are best race for shadowplay therefore.
Class specific racials on the priest felt so good. I know some abilities will always be better than others, but I like the feeling im getting from it. The shadowy side of an forsaken or the starshards embracing the power of elune as a nightelf made the whole classic experience really unique for me.
Fun Fact: Anduin in Heroes of the Storm has an ability called Chastise which works similarly, being a root. What I find cool about that is that he spent a lot of time with Velen, a draenei, and has Chastise as a human when it was original a draenei racial.
he also has desperate prayer as a talent, it works similarly with it being an instant cast that heals for a lot for no mana, but he also gets stunned for 2s afterwards
1) I love that Priest Racials were meant to be a lore thing and represented how different races worshiped different "gods," and two, love watching this as a priest main because like half of these racials just got distributed to everyone at some point.
Just got back into wow and my heart was broken after learning the pet battle channel went dormant. Without a doubt, you were the best on UA-cam for pet battles. Here's hoping....
So, bit of history; Seal of Blood/Martyr was removed from the game for PvP balancing reasons. In Wrath, it was far and away a ret paladin's strongest damaging seal, and the relatively small amount of damage that it did to you wasn't much of a penalty + easily offset with Judgement of Light when soloing, and downright negligible in PvE with solid healers. This was also before Forebearance abilities couldn't be used within 30 seconds of Avenging Wrath, so Paladins could safely just pop all their DPS cooldowns without sacrificing their option for an "oh shit" button and absolutely crush people with burst damage. With blues and some epics, I remember my judgements hitting for 16-18k when the average player health pool at the time was 12-14k. It was basically a non-broken I.W.I.N. button. It was also unbelievably good for AoE dmg with the introduction of Divine Storm, making paladins competitive for the best AoE DPS on large packs, and the standout best DPS for medium packs (3-6 enemies). I can't point to the specific patch, but at some point between Ulduar and ToC, there was a pretty significant rework to DPS seals. Seal of Blood/Martyr were removed, and a similar amount of damage was rolled into Corruption/Vengeance after you had achieved 5 stacks. A slightly less significant rework was done to Seal of Command, which made it hit harder and cemented it as the new AoE seal, whereas before ret paladins would use Blood/Martyr for both AoE and single target. It's one of my favorite PvP balancing nerfs that Blizz ever did in that era tbh. Really elegantly done; it was only a slight initial DPS decrease in PvE content, so most paladins didn't even notice it. And it completely solved the most broken part of pally pvp in that xpac (it had to be done, people in PvE gear were competitive with people in full glad gear, the burst dmg was just that good). It wasn't flashy or over the top, just a really simple elegant rework that solved a problem in one aspect of gameplay without impacting viability in others.
the paladin seal part reminds me of how paladins used to have different seals and how judgement had differing effects based on the seal. i would love it if blizz brought that back. THAT gives me the feeling of a paladin. the whole championing certain causes and judging those who defy your goal. it even fits with the current lore for the light since the light only requires conviction.
I have my own feelcraft for a revised spellbook for bringing back sealweaving and judging them without going full vanilla about it nor making the system mostly pointless like they did over time before it was pruned in favor of exclusively managing the Holy Power resource.
Seal Dance was probably at its peak during WoD, since level 100's had a talent that resolved entirely about seals. I don't think it was ever taken for PvE, due to being harder to use and having similar DPS (+ some utility). But I think it might been popular for PvP. WoD was truly a good expansion for ret paladins!

Id really like to see this make a comback in modern WoW but with a much bigger effect then just racials. Things like night elf rogues becoming wardens, troll shadow priests channeling Bwonsamdi instead of the void, and dark iron warlocks calling to the firelands instead of the twisting nether. It would really make player choice and spec identity go a long way.
You missed something on Seal of Blood. Not only did it do extra damage on auto attacks, which meant Horde Paladins stacked way better with haste/windfury/Blust, but the self damage gave room for you to get heals which proc'ed Spiritual Attunement, a Paladins main source for mana regen in combat. This meant Horde Ret Paladins could wear warrior gear (no mana) and still not have mana problems in a raid - all they needed was a Druid to toss a HoT on them. In comparison Alliance Ret Paladins were still using Seal of Command, basically RNG damage, but were also forced to wear either Tier Gear or Arena Gear for the mana, and still had mana problems and did less DPS than a Horde. In WoTLK they finally gave Seal of Blood to Alliance, but by then mana issues were eliminated with replenishment, and SoB was just removed from the game by Ulduar iirc. Anyone with 10mins of gaming experience in WoW could see the huge disparity between the two faction, especially as Seal of Vengeance was "ok" and the Paladin was the AoE off tank anyways, while Warriors remained the progression main all the way to Sunwell. To this day I'm shocked Blizzard allowed this to happen for a full 2 year expansion.
Devouring Plague is iconic for me, I am glad they brought it back! I hope they bring Starshards back as well. It fits the Priestess of Elune character class
The First Aid video was amazing. You should do one for the other professions. (i know there probably isn't much to say, so maybe just the history of how professions were changed as a whole between expansions)

6:14 Which is really a shame because I think it would be perfectly justified to have had racials for other classes because the generic ones in WOW don't actually exist in the lore. What I mean is that we know things like dwarf *"mountain kings"* or orc *"blade masters"* are both warriors in a sense but at the same time no one would confuse them as the same thing, each one is distinct and reflective of the culture and race they hail from. That is kinda why I HATE the whole "class lore" that's been pushed throughout WOW's life, that we are just to simply forget things like human knights, harvet witches, and even kul tiran tide sages are all to be lumped in with generic classes like warriors, paladins, shamans or druids. Heck dud did you know that each race or culture has their own unique take on arcane magic? Even ""mages"" in lore aren't purely arcane users, they dabble and experiment with other forms of magic because it would be dumb and silly to limit themselves to just whatever they were taught at some fancy mage academy, many warlocks in lore are still mages in that they STILL utilize arcane magic alongside Fel power! The only class I can think of thats as generic as presented in the lore is probably rouges, and even then that term is used to sweep a broad spectrum of assassins, thiefs, bandits, spies and murders and try to place them under one umbrella. It is kinda why I don't like the idea of class halls, atleast not how they've been implemented. Like imagine a would be gnome 'warrior' that uses magic *"power armor"* or *"mech suits"* to make up for their diminutive size or a orc mage that incorporates his culturally unique traditions around communing with his ancestors to guide his castings. I am not against all classes being open to all races...but I don't like how there's only one path for each race to achieve such goals, give use a goblin 'mage' that uses bombs to tap into arcane magic by exploding some leylines or a tauren 'warlock' that uses demons to *'eat'* the arcane curruption that befell his people's ancestoral lands!

I played with troll priest and this racial is insane with 5 shadow points in shadow to stun with shadow dmg before rouges broken my power shield they got stunned
I remember at the time when the Priest race-specific abilities were released the reason was told as priests simply not being popular to play. Before talent changes during the original classic, people just didn't really want to play priest. Shadow was useless and I don't even know what they were trying to do with Disc, but if you played priest it was because you wanted to raid heal as Holy (yes, I realise there will be some of you like "oh, I played shadow in my guild at the time" and tbh I don't care as I'm not talking about niche cases). Blizzard gave them the abilities to give people an interesting reason to pick priest and which race they played; Then it got overshadowed by how good Fear Ward was. I remember being in Silithus right after the talent changes and seeing some Shadow Priest ride into the Elites there and just clean them out, but most priests were still Holy healing.
*sees Class Racials* *cries in Priest* Also a note, Fear Ward is a holy spell and if you're like the foolish spriests I know in classic that roll dwarf for the "OP FEAR WARD!" it will knock you out of shadowform when you cast it and then you'll be spending a big chunk of mana to go back into shadowform....on a spec that's already stupidly mana starved. Best alternative.....BE A DISCWEAVER SMITING GOD! end of rant.

I've played wow since TBC. Somehow I never realised there were race specific class abilities. If anyone would have suggested that, I would have laughed at them.
I started playing WoW in Wrath and I had no idea there were ever class-specific racials. One thing I really want from WoW is for them to make races more unique. For example, give all the druids race-specific transformations. I also wish that each race had a smaller selection of classes to choose from. Like why are Tauren able to be priests, they are a shamanistic race. They should even restrict which spec certain races can play, like Gnomes and Goblins shouldn't be able to be Fury Warriors as they don't have the strength to dual-wield 2 handed weapons or the fact that lore-wise, there has only ever been 1 undead paladin, so why are forsaken still able to use the Holy orientated priest specs. IMO each race should only have access to 5 of the 10 non-hero classes maximum. The only races to have less than 7 in the current game are Lightforged Draenei and Highmountain Tauren. Some races (the dwarves and trolls) have 9 of 10 classes available to them and that is too much for me. I just want each race and each class to have a bit more uniqueness to them.
I feel really strongly about how druids should have race specific forms. I'm not saying make the abilities different, but add a bit more variety to the cosmetics. I am not an expert in lore but I feel like the suggestions below will just fit each individual race better. Worgen - Wolves instead of Cat Tauren - Some sort of Bull instead of a bear, a plainstrider as a cat and Kodo for travel Troll - Raptor for Cat They have already implemented unique forms for the Kul Tiran's and the Zandalari, why not go and retcon the other races as well.
so your idea of race fantasy is... restricting player choice for which race they want to play?? people were begging for troll paladins for years before they came out w zandalari paladins... youre absolutely in the minority with that opinion, holy hell
@@jackburke2562 it is said, that Taurens use holy light, but they worship sun and are something like Sol Palladins. It was also said, that undead priests, that use holy spells are bassicly in constant pain from this. It was a case back in classic/wotlk. After that they started implementing new combinations, becouse people were tired of keep playin blood elfs palladins over and over again
@@jackburke2562 "Too much work" is the simple answer there. Remember Claws of Shirvalla? That time when Blizz decided to give druids a new form (as opposed to a reskin of an existing form) and it was atrocious. It was a mashup of random recycled animations (such as Worgen race 'mount' as its running animation) and most of its animations were just straight up missing (it couldn't even dance). Sure, they _could_ put in the time to properly create completely new forms with new animation sets, but the costs greatly outweigh the benefits. I'd much rather they just put that time and effort into fixing the game itself instead, and I say this as a Druid-exclusive player.
People thought covenant abilities were toxic for min-maxing I can't imagine how'd they'd whine if modern wow got new/more impactful racials. Last time I remember hearing ANYTHING good about a racial in pve was trolls having some huge advantage when the Jaina fight first came out. I'm sure stoneform still gets occasional credit just because it can remove the rare boss bleed but I haven't heard of it in a long time.
I mean... they are both bad. For what it's worth I think they've managed to strike a healthy balance with racials, between providing uniqueness to the races and providing cosmetic freedom. The racials _can_ sometimes provide big advantages in niche scenarios but those moments are so niche that the only people who really have to care are the top% of guilds racing for world firsts. Everyone else is still free to choose their race for cosmetic reasons without feeling like they are gimping themselves or hurting their chances of being able to participate in content (I don't think many people get turned away from PUGs for their race choice).
So you're saying a dwarf priest could only cast fear ward once every 3 minutes and it would only break 1 fear and alliance was stronger because of that when undead had not only will of the forsaken but also ALL Shaman (which were Horde only in vanilla) could constantly break fear every 3 seconds on no cooldown with tremor totem. Did you do any research for this at all or did you just not play vanilla?
Specific racial class abilities makes perfect sense, too bad so many WoW features got scraped due to time constraints, really hope the idea private servers have of introducing those back kicks off instead of endlessly playing classic wow the same way.
I'd like to see a history of Druid forms and the different iterations they've taken over the years :P

I feel really strongly about how druids should have race specific forms. I'm not saying make the abilities different, but add a bit more variety to the cosmetics. I am not an expert in lore but I feel like the suggestions below will just fit each individual race better.
Worgen - Wolves instead of Cat
Tauren - Some sort of Bull instead of a bear, a plainstrider as a cat and Kodo for travel
Troll - Raptor for Cat
They have already implemented unique forms for the Kul Tiran's and the Zandalari, why not go and retcon the other races as well.
so your idea of race fantasy is... restricting player choice for which race they want to play?? people were begging for troll paladins for years before they came out w zandalari paladins... youre absolutely in the minority with that opinion, holy hell
Feels kinda weird without the BGM.
ah yes, the blood god, forgot about them.
People thought covenant abilities were toxic for min-maxing I can't imagine how'd they'd whine if modern wow got new/more impactful racials.
Last time I remember hearing ANYTHING good about a racial in pve was trolls having some huge advantage when the Jaina fight first came out. I'm sure stoneform still gets occasional credit just because it can remove the rare boss bleed but I haven't heard of it in a long time.
during mythic KJ progression in tomb of sargeras top guilds were race changing en masse to goblins for the rocket jump :p
I mean... they are both bad.
Any volunteers for the blood god?
What is the name of that addon in the middle of screen tracking his rotation cd's in 13:25?
Late reply but I believe that's SexyCooldown. It's currently outdated, however.
@@arstulex thanks fella
Devouring Plague made Disc priests really fun to play as undead, since the plague costs over 1K mana at endgame and was VERY powerful when alone.
Chaosbolt
So you're saying a dwarf priest could only cast fear ward once every 3 minutes and it would only break 1 fear and alliance was stronger because of that when undead had not only will of the forsaken but also ALL Shaman (which were Horde only in vanilla) could constantly break fear every 3 seconds on no cooldown with tremor totem. Did you do any research for this at all or did you just not play vanilla?
40k lore channel incoming?
"generate any HATE"?! What game are YOU playing?!
yay :D
Seal of Martyr was in TBC???? Not added in wrath???? i seal twisted like a madman for months on tbc so try again
Two claims for first, two for second lol
Specific racial class abilities makes perfect sense, too bad so many WoW features got scraped due to time constraints, really hope the idea private servers have of introducing those back kicks off instead of endlessly playing classic wow the same way.
Idk why they removed these type of racial abilities. Oh wait I know why. They were probably fun.
Please talk about the sacred ancient technique: the stance dance.
eeww
We won one Juan! Juan! We won one!!
mind spike next time please
How to pad a video: Seal of the Martyr and Seal of Corruption.
I thought seal of blood and martyr got removed cuz it was busted in pvp D:
Just shows the bias towards priests that continues to this day.

It's pronounced heroism, not hero-ism.

WoW is too homogenised now. They need to bring back these sorts of differences.
