- A Rare 'Triple-Humbucker' Explorer.
This 'Second Version' Explorer is one of just 3,656 guitars made between 1976 and 1979 and weighs 9.40 lbs. Solid mahogany body and one-piece mahogany neck with a nut width of 1 11/16 inches, a scale length of 24 3/4 inches and wonderful medium-to-thick profile. Black faced headstock with pearl inlaid "Gibson" logo. Gold-plated, bell-shaped truss rod cover secured by two screws. Individual 'two-line' Gibson [Kluson Deluxe] tuners with oval metal buttons. Serial number "71598230" stamped in blind on back of headstock. Rosewood fretboard with 22 original jumbo frets and pearloid dot markers. Two Gibson Series Vll humbucking pickups in the neck and bridge position with outputs of 5.15k and 7.40k respectively. One Gibson Patent No. Humbucker (stamped on the underside "2,737,842") in the middle position with an output of 4.42k. The middle position pickup is activated by a push-pull switching sysyem on the second volume control. Single-layer black plastic pickguard with eight screws. Three controls (two volume, one tone) plus three-way pickup selector switch. The potentiometers are stamped "137 7812" and "137 7843" (CTS, March & October 1978). Gold plastic barrel-shaped 'speed' control knobs. Gibson ABR-1 Tune-O-Matic retainer bridge with metal saddles, separate stud tailpiece. All hardware gold-plated. This very unusual guitar is in near mint (9.25) condition with just a few very tiny and insignificant surface marks. Housed in the original Gibson three-latch, rectangular black hardshell case with black leather ends and burgundy plush lining (9.00).

I think that is one of THE most tonally versatile guitars I've ever heard. He did a pretty good job of demonstrating it's tonal breadth.

I have played the RG350, but not an Explorer like that. I'm gonna have to say that the Explorer sounds more tonally versatile than the Ibanez to me. Of course, I'm no Phil X either. :)

Yeah, don't get me wrong, I love my S470 DVF. It's showing some wear and tear, but it's been a great guitar. It took me a while to warm up to the color and matte finish, but now I wonder why more guitars don't have similar type paint finishes. Hides the sweaty finger prints pretty well. :)
I bought this axe on Monday, March 18 and it's arriving today! (March 22). Can't wait to take it for a spin!

I LOVE Gibson Explorers!! I blame it on Matthias Jabs of the Scorpions lol Ever since I saw his white explorer with the black stripes back when love at first sting first came out, I had to have one. Well, after 31 years, I just bought a beautiful 1992 '76 reissue Gibson Explorer in Black with a white Pickguard. It's all original and in mint condition. I LOVE it!!!! Oh....I LOVE my cherry burst Les Paul too lol
Scott Pink Hetfield also looked best with an Explorer.

I'm getting my hands on this beast. I already got 3 Explorers (a 1975 reissue, the new Tribal model, and a 1984 one with 3 P-90 pickups), & I can't stop collecting them. It's like potato chips, I get one, I end up getting them all.
I would of loved to jam the scorps with you back in the 80’s on Norm’s farm on Winston Churchill. I shouldn’t of stepped aside. You rocked back then just as hard as you do now. 👍👍

I had exactly the same impression at first, but then I've seen him on Rob Chapman's videos. Especially the ones called "Phil X at andertons" utterly chaged my mind about him. He's a very serious guy when it comes to music, guitars and the tone. And he's one of the best players I've ever seen
