@mnmax98 I used a six sided heat treated impact socket with a 1/2 drive connected to a 1/2 inch breaker bar. Those are both craftsman tools. I them went to the hardware store and bought a piece of pipe of a right inside diameter to just slip over the breaker bar handle. I believe the pipe was about 3-4 feet long. Don't go too long or you will hit the hood. Measure before you go to the hardware store. This increases the mechanical advantage of the breaker bar.
Great video. How did you take the bolt off holding the harmonic balancer with out using an impact? I am going this my self right now and learning from our videos. Thanks
@sundy9901 I used the flex plate locking plug to lock the crank in place. But they actually say you should not do this and use another tool on the crank to lock it in place. I believe the tool goes on the front of the engine. Using the plug to lock the crank in place may deform the hole in the trans. But i did not have a problem. I found a torque wrench that went up to 275 for rental at a local parts store.
Is this information accurate? Is this what jaguar says? I need to know before I do mine! Somebody told me that all engines have timing marks, so I wanted to know if that was true.
I am trying to remove the bolts that hold the camshaft caps; but they are very tight. I understand that the bolts have locktite on them, from the factory. Can you please tell me how you removed the camshaft bolts? I am afraid to put too much pressure on them, as they may break.
I recently purchased a 2000 jaguar xjr that had been sitting for well over a year and a half. When I finally got it to start, it initially made some sort of knocking noise near the top drivers side of the engine, but goes away after like 30 seconds to a minute. It only happens when I start the car, or if it goes to really low idle rpms. Any ideas? This video looks like a very good start to my problem, but I want to be extra sure!
How many miles do you have on the car? If it is from 60K on up it may be tensioner noise. It is only loud when the car has sat for a while because the oil has drained off the upper valve train and it takes a little bit for it to pump up all the tentioners and lubricate the valve-train really well. I suspect you already think it is the tentioners since you are watching this video. How many miles are on the car? Have you ever changed the tentioners?
@isharplesx37 I would not use the gun to install the bolt as it has a torq spec as noted above of 275 ft.lbs and you do not know how tight it is if you installed it with a gun. Use a torque wrench.
I responded before, now I am getting a XJR, my XJ8L was totaled. you are the best/..

when the crank pin is fitted the engine is in safe position which is after top dead centre on number one cylinder not top dead centre as stated

FYI, this engine DOES NOT get timed at TDC. There are no timing marks on this engine - that's why you need to use the cam locking bars.

Great videos, thanks for documenting !

you shouldve added in the vid how to use the wedges and how to tighten the chain. what side to remove the slack when tightening
Damper is the word.. Thank's...Art
Dampener is a sponge or a hose.
So you do not need to remove the supercharger?

Very helpful thanks
Thanks for the Video. Really helped.
