I have found that I am much happier buying one high-quality piece rather than multiple fast fashion ones. For example, I bought 1 Ulla Johnson dress this year for church and parties. Since it was expensive, I can't afford any other dresses until next year, but I take much better care of it and it is such better quality material and fit than items I have bought in the past.

Yes!!! 🙌🙌 This is huge! This is something that can often take a while to understand, but once you do it, it’s so worth it. You may only buy one dress, but you’ll be wearing this dress for years (if not forever) because of the fit and quality 👏🏽♥️ a really great point to bring up xxx

That is the best way to shop. I keep trying to convince my Mum to stop buying cheap jackets and invest in a good quality one, that she will love wearing. She buys and buys and her wardrobe is full of jackets, what is the point?? You will never feel special in a cheap item. It is a good investment to buy well tailored, in cashmere, wool or natural fibres, instead of synthetic cheap jackets that are made in mass production.

I kinda have that disease, its like when I see someone who looked good in skirt, i will buy a similar skirt and buy it in every color. But once I got them, I'll just put it in my closet and not wear them, coz after trying them on and finding out that it doesn't look good on me realizing that my body type is different from that of the model in their ads, i feel kinda guilty. Not to mention I sort of have ocd, its difficult for me to mix and match color combo outfits, dont know how to color block, and yet still buying clothes both neutral and bold colors. Your video is very helpful and still working on how to stop impulse buying, practicing minimalism and learning how to mix and match colors in my outfits. Great video as usual.

I find that "buying" is kind of like an addiction. As you said, that shot of dopamine you get when you come home with a new item. Frankly, this is true even of buying second hand. During COVID when stores were closed I would spend way too much time scrolling through eBAY and buying things that maybe I shouldn't have. Sure, it's second hand, but it's also the fuel used by the airplane or the truck to transport them... so the point is to try to stop the addiction at its root. One thing I do is to organize the clothes I have and plan new outfits with what is there. Figuring out a new outfit I hadn't considered before gives me a bit of a high and satisfies my fashion tooth (almost) as much. I also have started keeping a record of my clothes I own, by categories, and of outfits that have worked together. (Sometimes with photos.) Maybe it's silly but again it satisfies the fashion craving and is free and eco-friendly. Those are my tips.

I do the same thing when I need a fix. I shop eBay or Poshmark and purchase things I don't need just out of boredom for the dopamine rush. It is fun getting new/used clothing in the mail but half the time it doesn't fit right or look right and Postmark does not accept returns and eBay usually does not on clothing either.

    • @heidilanders9807
      @heidilanders9807 2 роки тому

On eBAY there is a company called THRED UP that accepts returns, no questions asked, and sends you a label to return. I find them pretty safe to deal with.

The “ does it fit my lifestyle tip” I think is such a good one . So many times I have loved things , that were very flattering or fit my budget , but in the end of the day, weren’t really relevant to my life . Like buying a really heavy coat, when I live in mostly warmer climate. Or buying trousers that I wouldn’t really wear to school… I think it’s important to realize that just because u love something , doesn’t mean it’s for u.
Also the putting off to buy something and seeing if I still want it in a month is a very useful tip. And that way I know if I really wanted or needed something, or if it was just in the moment

One of my biggest tips is to leave the tag on! Leave it on and try the item on at home, that has honestly saved me so much money. My boyfriend thinks I am rediculous for even bringing the item home, but that gives me the ‘impulse buy’ rewarding feeling. However when that feeling wears off, I can return that item and at that point I might even have learned what it was that made me feel like it was’nt worth it❤️

The downside of doing this is that, at some places, they will not always put the clothing back on the rack. Instead, it can either be sent to a discount store, donated, or just straight up thrown in the trash. Excessive donated clothing can also end up just being thrown out, depending on which organization receives it. Unless you are sure that the store will resell an item if it has not been used, be very very cautious about doing this. You may get your money back, but it can end up being much more wasteful than many people realize!
My boyfriend worked at a return center. Some things are sent back to the main stores, but the majority are donated, and it was protocol to straight up destroy some things, even if they were still brand new and in perfect condition.

Fitting your lifestyle is SO essential. As a mom of three living in the country with a dog/garden who loves being outside and works from home as much as I want to buy a blazer I know I will never wear it. I also know I run hot so though I love knitted winter sweaters I have only one heavy one for really chilly days. I have made SO many impulsive buys and regretted them but I’m learning!

@@EmilyElizabethMay I so agree! I feel so happy with my wardrobe now as I slowly built it with mostly second hand high quality pieces I would not buy brand new because they are too expensive. And it's fun to be on the hunt for something and wait until you find that perfect piece that was missing, most of the time for a fraction of the price. At least for me, it is the best way to shop for clothes that will stay in my wardrobe for many years.

Today I bought in a second hand shop my summer lounge wear capsule wardrobe. I’m so happy bc It was finally a thoughtful purchase.
    I ended up buying exactly what I’m sure I need: 2 shorts, 2 t-shirts and 2 dresses.
If I’m capable of going to a supermarket with a list in my hand, check the quality and prices of the products why I’m not capable of applying the same strategy to shop clothes? Why does it has to be so much more emotional than rational??
In the end of the day, shopaholics get tired of this cycle: buying > guilty > buying … I’m tired 😪

I think consumerism and fashion marketing can divert us from concentrating on what really matters: our physical & mental health. Much better to spend $500 on a personal trainer and/or life coach than $500 on the latest trends. The trends don’t flatter a physique that needs work, or fix a poor self image. Concentrate on the core elements that make you YOU, and forego the hype of clothing manufacturers.

For me, what slowed me down was sticking to the basically 2 or 3 styles that work on me. I don't let myself drift from these few formulas because in the end they won't last and I'll be kicking myself. Another big thing for me since I've moved from dyed hair to Grey is sticking with the right colors. It's been an expensive learning curve I hope to not revisit.

Very well put together! Personal style is an ongoing process...I have seen my style change every 7-10 years since my twenties. Now at 51, I am embarking on yet another style journey, but this time it's not following trends, not spending money on new things, but auditing and rethinking/reworking what I have already got. For items that haven't been worn much, I take the time to plan to wear it at least once during the season before selling it or giving it away. I also buying secondhand first, to really test the waters before even considering buying an investment piece. I finally feel like I am in control!!! AND I have been saving so much money!!!!

10 years ago I didn’t know what my style was and tbh I didn’t think about it so much, so I would walk into a shop and buy whatever the shop was telling me to wear. Over the years I realised I was wearing clothes that were just SO unflattering for my body and for me. It’s took a long time but I’ve really had to think about the clothes I ACTUALLY like, finding a style really helped me to make sure I was buying things I knew I would get wear out of. I try to keep away from trends unless I really like it.

I've got much better at buying clothes I actually wear over the last two years thanks to you and others such as Alyssa Beltempo and Signe Hansen. My challenge was the lack of time to carry out research and shop my closet, as a working mum of two small kids. So my tip would be to accept that capsule wardrobing and sustainable style is a continuous journey and rarely something you can achieve over a weekend. Be patient with yourself and try different strategies, and be kind to yourself if you miss a step. Like you have been role-modelling, Emily! Thank you for your content, I like your advice and your genuine, warm communication.

Emily, what an informative video. And I so relate to you! I was buying white stiff shirts like I had shares in the company and never wearing them. The same with white, long sleeve Henley t.shirts, though I do wear those I didn’t need fifteen of them!! I started to look at what was in my closet and really question why did I keep bringing home the same item each time I shopped?! Either I had no confidence in my ability to make decisions for my own wardrobe or I was chasing someone else’s dream of how to look. When I solved that issue (and that took time) , I stopped bringing home so many “white” shirts, wore the couple I kept, and made stronger choices when I shopped. It is actually freeing. Thanks so much for such a helpful talk!

One thing that has helped me minimizing impulse buy or having less regrets while working on developing my personal style is sticking to to basic, sustainable non trendy items.
These items will never go out of style and even if my style evolves as it naturally does, I am still able to utilize those pieces because they are the foundation of my wardrobe.
    Also,
If they are quality sustainable pieces, they can be re sold or passed on to someone else if they no longer fit our needs.

U know that cycle u mentioned of buying a piece of clothing, using it once and then getting bored with it, was exactly what I did in the past.. Mom always struggled with me, always complaining about me buying clothes that sometimes i never even get to wear.. I guess being aware of whatever we purchase and actually asking ourselves if we really do need it, or is it just that moment where we can't leave that specific item behind because it was "too cheap" or "too cute" or probably "on sale"..
Ever since I was a kid, i somehow enjoyed thrifting, i mean, the joy of finding a unique piece of clothing with a reasonable pricing was very fun to experience, yet i just bought and bought without thinking if I'm ever using these clothes...
Now, that I'm a lil bit more conscious about the money i spend and what I'm spending on, i actually had the chance to build my wardrobe where i enjoy all of my clothes that actually got me and are very much my style, either from thrifting or buying good quality clothing items.. I'm pretty proud at my self for achieving my dream wardrobe, Wich contains pieces that definitely fit my personality and are not based on "trends" or "social media's models".. I'm happier ☺️

Found your channel yesterday and I absolutely love you!! You are so natural, lovely, clear in your communication and pretty. Someone who I can relate to totally. Will have to watch all your videos and write down a lot of notes 😍 all your outfits are so classy and easy chic and when I think of my wardrobe I’m like what the hell is in there 🤣 because whenever I have to put an outfit together in which I should feel comfortable in, that should be easy to wear, it’s so hard!! So sad that I have two and a half wardrobes full of clothes and actually „nothing“ to wear that makes me feel good and is easy to combine🙄 Need to find my personal style tho and have to work on me and my bad money habits😅

I have been trying to stop the small purchases, but make a note of how much I was about to spend. I.e, basic tank £8, duplicate white tee £15 etc. and then I can justify a single bigger spend on something I have been wanting for a long time, the gradual “saving” means the time passes for me to be sure on the bigger buy - and so far, no regrets when the buying time comes for the splurge ❤️ great videos, I’m new here and very much enjoying and learning great tips xx

Finally really good advice on the subject! I am a sucker for these marketing tricks, even though I am aware...lately buying 'high quality' on sale but ending up buying non essential things. Like TWO Bassetti kimono's when in need of a new bathrobe. Need to 'clean out' my wardrobe of the items I have bought like that, it's just difficult getting rid of nice items, hardly ever worn (designer items bought only because they were on sale). And yes, those super duper trendy items, only feel comfortable as long as the trend lasts and when you wait for it to go on sale... the joy is short-lived. So thank you, will listen carefully :)))

@Emily Elizabeth, I'm a new subscriber and I am really enjoying your channel. Thank you for such an informative video. I'll be watching it again to take note.
My wardrobe was mainly comprised of corporate dresses and suits. I found it difficult to shift to casual wear as I didn't feel comfortable and found mixing and matching daunting so I'd end up in my uniform... leggings and a top. That was until I hired a stylist that came to my house and she did a wardrobe edit. I was surprised to find that there was little to purge and she made casual outfits with suits and dresses! She worked out what were the best colours for me especially the ones that brighten up my face and she gave me a list of what basic items I needed to purchase. It was real value for money. As a petite, she also taught me the value in good tailoring so I am mindful of what I purchase. It's a shame that in Australia we don't have especialised stores for petites. I have also turned off all the notifications from the sites as I was bombarded on a daily basis with sales and special offers. I was wasting a lot of money purchasing online.

Hi Emily. I'm in a weird phase in my life right now. I think I'm bored because of the pandemic and not being able to travel or socialize as much as we did before, so I've been chasing trends and shopping online a lot. Hearing you say that doing this is tiring is such a relief! For me it's just exhausting. The thing with trends is that they never end! And no matter how many trends I follow I never seem to fully like my wardrobe or the way I look in my clothes and I get bored of my brand new pieces really quickly. I guess it might also have something to do with middle age crisis, I'm 40 now. I've set my mind to stop buying for a month at least but, honestly, I don't know if I'll be able to. I'll try! Your videos are like therapy to me. Thanks a lot. I'm Spanish, by the way. Greetings from the Antipodes! :)

    1. I don't mind the marketing. The reason I buy the product is because I want it. The marketing usually just gives me a nudge to spend/buy more than I really need, but definitely want.
    2. As a man, I prefer classic styles. Like, actual classic styles, not just what is being marketed as "classic."
    3. Planning out your wardrobe is important. Random colors and patterns don't mix well.
Personal note: You would look best in mid-rise jeans. I promise.
    4. Matching is key. What do you have that you can wear with it?
    5. I do overspend for impulse buys frequently, but I rarely regret buying them. $300-$1,000 pieces get pricey, but I wanted them because they're great. (Men's clothing is anything, BUT cheap... outside of T-shirts and mesh shorts.)
    6. I can't identify with much on this point. My impulse buys are things I want, but wasn't planning on buying.
    7. Avoid trends/fads. Just... don't. Ever. I learned my lesson long ago. But, you need perspective to differentiate between fads and classic style. One thing I learned is to see if people who are young AND middle-aged look good wearing it. If it looks good on a fit 20 yr old and it looks good on a fit 40 yr old, it just looks good.

    Dear Ms Emily,
I am so grateful for your helpful, wise and intelligent video!!
    ...
It may have been said, I apologize for repeating if so; one tip for me not to get into the trap of...buying for "nothing" , buying what I DO NOT need...
While at home, " if I feel content with what I have at this very instant, I DO NOT go to stores!" 😂 As simple as that!
I do not set foot...in stores!
Even if...I went with a list (now, I am succeeding but before...), I would ALWAYS see something I wish I had...or thought I needed...(as industries of fashion or others ...decor, etc...LOVE to make us think!).
    Therefore: no store!
    Voilà! 😆
    helene :)

My tip for not buying clothes you end up not wearing. : - Never shop in a sale. You end up buying items because you believe you are getting a bargain, yet when you take it home, you never wear it. This has happened so much times to me, I do not go to any shop sales ever!! What is sold during sales - is items that was never sold and last season's items that the shop wants rid of. The other thing that ends up in the sale is sizes that are never popular. If you ever ended up seeing something you actually like, you will never get it in your size!! How many items do you have in your wardrobe, that still have the tag on? Are they a sale item? I bet they are!!!

Emily, you're my 'Jiminy Cricket' (my conscience). I have recently fallen off the wagon and purchased several new items for my wardrobe which I just did not need and have not worn! My only solace is they are not trendy pieces. But seriously, how many shoes, jumpers and trousers can one person wear!? I listened to your words of wisdom and vow to get back on track. I shop when I'm feeling flat/blue. So that dancing around the house tip is a winner in my eyes. PS: Fanta knows he's a beautiful boy and he's not wrong! 😋 Have a great weekend, stay safe and well 🧡

I feel great about saving money and helping the environment, and also feel more in control. I use a closet app with uploaded pictures of my clothes so I can track how often I wear items. Some tips. I do make fashion mistakes sometimes because I like a piece very much but don't have much to wear it with. I find if it's a top, jeans go with most tops, just work out from the jean style to tuck it in or not, or which jacket to wear over. If it's an expensive piece you loved in a sale, but not sure how to wear it, think about the shape and colour. Are they flattering? Can you wear it with other colours that lift it? Do you fit it in with neutral colours or all black with it? There are things I rarely wear but they are 20-30 years old, very good quality, and I wear them at least 2 or 3 times a year, in different ways. I always love them, but there are rare occasions I can wear them. Or have an element altered professionally to make it suit you more, or more fashionable for today. If the material and quality is good, it's worth doing that.
I also buy cheaper pieces in more trendy styles and for the basics, stick to classic pieces in good material.
Also write down what you saw on somebody else and loved and take this information shopping with you. You might strike lucky, and also write down how the original was worn and why you love it so much. You can often recreate a similar outfit, changed a bit to flatter you, from what you already have. Or just by buying one or two smaller pieces.

I do love a polka dot or a stripe, and love a leopard print in belts, shoes or bags. ( definitely in small doses) Any other print I may love on the hanger but always hate it on me.

I redirected my impulse buying to op shops a few years ago, so now i don't feel bad about buying clothes as they only costed a fraction of the cost. I can try out new styles on me and when I'm bored with the piece of clothing I donate it back to the op.

I do the same exact things when shopping (I ask myself the same questions, wait some time and really think before I buy something, and try to put it together in my mind with the pieces I already have in my closet), but the most effective thing for me is to remember: This thing will be paid by the money I earned by investing and irretrievably "losing" time from the limited time I have here on Earth: so is it worth it?

This is interesting, however I was disappointed that you mentioned transitioning but did not discuss it. I’m changing styles and colors. I’ve found myself constantly purchasing colors of clothes that I don’t even like anymore all the time. I was wearing mostly one color for many years, and having a hard time not buying. I don’t know if it’s just been such a habit for so long, or what the reason is. I do know that when I get home, I’m not happy with the items because of the color, and really having to find a way to stop doing this. I even tell myself that I won’t purchase that color when I go shopping, and I still do. It’s sooo irritating. Hopefully, I will stop soon though. Thank you for the otherwise interesting video 🙂
