Featured in this video is the restoration of a 1953 Breitling Ref 178 with 18K rose gold case and a Venus 170 mechanical column wheel chronograph.
Restoration undertaken by Nicholas Hacko, Master Watchmaker on September 30/09/2020.
The story of Breitling began on 1884 when 24 year old watchmaker Leon Breitling founded the small watch manufacturing workshop in Saint-Imier, Switzerland.
Leon Breitling specialized in production of complicated stop watch timers and chronographs.
By early 1930 Breitling had 40 different chronographs on offer.
In 1939 Breitling signed a large contract with British Air ministry to make flight chronographs for the Royal Air Force. After WW2, Breitling was an official supplier to Douglas, KLM, BOAC, Lockheed, Air France and United Airlines.
To this day, Breitling chronographs are regarded as a true pilot's watch known for their reliability and precision.

Absolutely fascinating!!!! Beautiful work there. Could you tell what kind of a liquid you have used to clean the dial? It does not seems to be too aggressive. Keep up the awesome work and I can only pray for more content of this and the video quality! I used to be a collector, but I liquidated my collection to venture into real estate. In January, I acquired homes in Malibu for $34 million, and the returns on investment far exceed what I earned as a collector.
How did you grow your portfolio to $34m, I'm impressed, I have a lump sum in the bank, the rates are not impressive so I'm moving it, whats your cash flow like?
I have a financial advisor (trader) she grows my liquid assets and I reinvest the weekly payouts back into real estate and long-term ETFs.
Great move, please can you share her with me, or maybe her name so I could search for her online, thanks
Cathy Jemar Carlone look her up.
Smart move, I love it, I have similar pattern for my cash flow as well.
That is my kind of watch. History and patina without all the glitz. A man's everyday timepiece.
Well done. A concise, masterful, resurrection of a 67 year old Breitling chrono. I am grateful to have had the opportunity to look over your shoulder during this process. It is an affirmation of what skill, a steady hand, and patience can achieve. A joy to behold! Thank you for sharing. The completed restoration gave me a renewed appreciation for Breitling timepieces.
Actually a 1946 piece.
I bloody love these videos, Mr Hacko. Lord knows how you remember where everything goes back. And that new strap is a thing of beauty. Great work. Again.
He has filmed the whole process so it's probably not so hard to know where everything should be placed. The hard part is to organize them during the process of restoring so that nothing goes missing or damaged.
I just love watching this, though I'm not sure why.
This is a much more complicated mechanism than most other watch vids I have seen
Stunning workmanship. Something that was just about a “throw away”, reincarnated to a beautiful timepiece, true nirvana.
A compelling restoration. I too was born in 1953, and I wish I could clean up that good. Kudos for the music.
Not 1953... he’s incorrect. 1946 model.
It is gratifying to know that@ 71 my lifelong craft will still be in good hands when i am gone.good wishes for the future.John Anderson, Watch/ clock repaier
Brought back for the dead for another life time for someone to cherish by a master watchmaker salu very impressed
The MOST OUTSTANDING watch restoration I have seen. The end result was sublime.
Would loved to have seen the customer's face when they got their piece returned.
Gonna watch it again :-0
I don't understand how this video has 85 👎. Only thing I can think of is they hit the wrong button. Excellent video & excellent watch restoration. I would be proud to own that watch.
Thank you!
I’m in awe how many parts are in that timepiece and you know how it all goes back together! Bravo!
Wow, just wow. Awesome job on that Breitling!! Bravo. When you put that strap on the watch, that just completed everything... Just a beautiful watch, by the end.... well done!!!
Beautiful. Not hard to see why Nicholas is a MASTER watchmaker.
I love the magic moment when it returns to life and begins to tick. Also, looking at the after pics.
Being in electronics repair all my life i cringed remembering the first time i took apart something so intricate forgetting where everything went haha...even more so with all those tiny gears and screws. you good sir are a master of your trade. Love the vid
Gorgeous watch. Someday I may have the pride of owning such a timepiece but never will I have the satisfaction of restoring it myself. You are an artist my friend.
At least for me I take tons of pictures each step to reference back and also separate all pieces in order that I removed them, it’s definitely nerve racking the first few times not being sure if you can reassemble everything but over all very satisfying and relaxing for me
Its like you saved a life and the heart is now beating at the right rate!! - thanks much appreciated!
My dad had one. Wish I had it. Brings back memories. Great work!
That was truly amazing, and the jazz wasn't bad either.
@@jtreg I'm actually more of a rock guy, than a jazz fan.
Incredible! No gaskets anywhere on vintages... so delicate. But its still so amazing the work that goes into a watch of that age. Thanks for doing what you do.
Bravo!! Beautiful work. Can you start adding a playlist to the music as well? Love when the watch comes alive after installing the balance wheel.
Masterfull. Fantastic restoration. What a beautiful timepiece brought back to Life. Couldn’t stop watching. Kudos.
Ser, watching on your job and listening this music makes this video like a relax lounge film. Thank you.
I can recognize some Dave Brubeck music in there.
So true
That's more than a restoration, that's brought back from the dead. Great job!
Very impressive! I can't believe how good the dial looks after cleaning.
Brand new to these videos; never considered watching them for a second in my life and now they’re literally like therapy. Fascinating, unreal skill.
amazing work, good to see these old watches coming back to life! Hopefully it will remain as beautiful as it is now!
Why do I absolutely love this movement! Outstanding
Inspirational. Elegant. Ethical and respectful. Bellissimo.
I have a soft spot for Breitling, ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL rebuild.
That one can even remember where everything goes in the correct sequence is what amazes me
I don't think I have ever seen another watch maker on UA-cam clean a dial as well as you did on this video. Even one with over 200,000 subscribers!
Jazz, watches, mastership and labor... ❤️❤️❤️❤️⌚⌚⌚⌚
I think that dial looks great with the damage marks showing. Restored beautifully. Thanks Mr. Hacko. Nice job.
That sounds like Paul Desmond on the saxophone with the Dave Brubeck quartet. Beautiful. Nice job on the watch man.
Can`t believe how good looking it come out, well done man.
What a lovely restoration! Thanks Nick!
My grandfather owned a Orfina with this movement. I am delighted to own it today, some 60+ years after he purchased it.
I can almost hear the watch say ,,thank you"
I am surprised at how well the watch recovered from the damage. Well done!
What an absolutely beauty of a time piece. Great job saving her.

The jazz music is relaxing... While doing the serious job
Breathes life into time.
True master.
💚
Patience Level „Watchmaker“. This is truely amazing. And the music‘s nice too.
What you do in your workshop is the world championship for me. Your films are watched with great joy, and the end results bring me to tears and full of happiness. I would give a lot to learn this rare profession from such a master. Once I took my first Soviet "rocket" watch apart, but I never managed to put it together. I salute you with greetings from Poland
Such a great job you did restoring this watch and giving it a new life . Keep up the good work.
Gorgeous watch. Love how you kept the character of the dial but still got rid of the dirt and grime obscuring the numbering. Excellent job
A little beauty, but not over restored. It even looks happier at the end ,or is that my imagination?
Beautiful! You even repaired the spring for the buttons. Finally a Venus 170 gets overhauled on video!
Wow. That was spectacular! Thank you for sharing! I need a watch like that! Appreciate what you do!
Quite a dramatic restoration. Nicely done.
Beautiful classy watch. Would love to own it.
Grazie, che ci fate godere di questi capolavori, per molti anni ancora.
Amazing Nick. One of your best videos. Very happy with the job you did on my Sea master too, by the way. Lucky for us watch collectors here in Australia, we have a talent such as yourself!
This is incredible! and how accurate!
A master's class in restoring a classic Breitling.
I can only imagine what it must be like to be able to restore one of these beautiful old timepieces and then wear it with pride.
Swinging Video. I am an old school photographer. I was back in school watching this well inspiring, whimsical Japanese time traveling to aerospace finish, I was delighted with before and after and then realized it was me you took apart and put me back together. ❤
Love the befores and afters. This took a lot of work.
Is it only me that’s smiling when the spring starts its magic? 🙄
Spectacular, very spectacular work!!!!!!!!!!
if I wasn't seeing this I wouldn't believe such a thing is possible. truly amazing; as much as the restoration work is good I am talking about the great brains who dreamt and created this watch as well as other watches for that matter.
The process with great music!, well done!!
Beautiful restauration,as for 45 min counter dial it is probably one of "soccer-football" chronograps so it is made to measure half time in game .Great job.
Fantástico, belíssimo trabalho, digno de um artista.
Bloody brilliant again Nick. Loved it
Just love the musical score! Your work stands on its own merit.
absolutely beautiful and a brilliant job!!
Congratulations Nick. Another great restoration.
Great job and excellent music. 👍👍👍
Wow! No other words. Just wow!
Beautiful job. Well done Nicholas on bringing this classic beauty back to life. Good choice of music too!
Maravilloso, a eso se le llama una restauración perfecta. Sin duda, una de las mejores que he tenido el placer de ver.
Incredible. What a craftsman. Thank you.
Es la mejor restauración que he visto, excelente trabajo, se ve mucha pasión en lo que haces.
the true definition of perfection !!
What a gem!
This is the best watch restoration video I've seen. Beautiful results with a beautiful timepiece.
WOW!! Thank you for sharing this wonderful video!
Habe den Kanal erst kürzlich entdeckt und finde ihn wunderbar!
Auch die Musik.
What a magnificent piece! And a marvellous restoration. No doubt it's worth a small fortune...
¡Que hermoso ese reloj! .
SIMPLY AMAZING! MY RESPECTS TO YOU !
What a beautiful watch! Amazing transformation.
I learned this art from my dad just brings back memories thanks very much keep doing what you do
Fantastic video Nick. It was a beautiful watch created by a skilled watchmaker. Just as well there are still skilled watchmakers like you to bring it back for it's second life. Nice job . ( I like your choice of band)
An absolutely beautiful watch. Stunned. Great work. I know a lot of people will just enjoy watching a master's performance and listen to the music but for those who might want to get into repairs and service comments on e.g. cleaning liquids and oils would be very helpful.
Holly crap that is amazing!!!
True craftsmanship.
Wonderful ending always my favourite to see it finished 100/100
100% maravilhoso,serviço lindo e preciso 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
Nicholas, I have a similar Breitling Premier but with a stainless steel case and three sub dials. I purchased this some time ago from the US. The dial had undergone a restoration, but the watch had a problem. The flyback mechanism for the chronograph would not work properly, taking sometimes three or four attempts to make it work.
As I had purchased the watch 'as is', I sent it out to a watchmaker in the UK explaining the problem. The watchmaker contacted me and stated that a part had been replaced in the watch, and that this part was the wrong part. This is why the flyback would not work properly. The watchmaker told me that since this was an old watch finding a replacement would take time. I agreed that he could hang onto the watch for a time so that he could search for a replacement part.
So, six months passed without any feedback from the watchmaker, and then a year. In the New Year I decided to contact the watchmaker and find out how he was coming along finding the replacement part. This for a time was fraught, and for a moment I thought that I might have lost the watch, but no. I was eventually informed by one of the watchmakers family monitoring his E mails and remaining estate that he had sustained a heart attack and died. Poor guy. The watch was found in the watchmakers safe, and returned to me.
So, a year gone, and the watch still not repaired. The watch is here with me in Thailand. I just wondered whether this watch might be still repairable. I understand that parts for watches can be in short supply, especially for older watches, but is it possible that in some cases that the part can be manufactured by the watchmaker? I would be interested to see your response.
By the way, this watch style and movement is beautiful. That is why I bought my own. Just fell in love with the watch from first sight. Keeps excellent time.
Amazing work! Hard to believe this is the same watch.
