I can't get enough of umbrella tutorial it's the simplicity and the elegance of the light modifier love to see a three point umbrella portrait video also, thanks
Glad you liked the tutorial. More lighting tutorials to come!
9:16 is by far my favorite shot, She looks so stunning, i love the little frizzy hairs, the way the light makes her eyes shine and that soft facial expression. She is soooo beautiful!
Glad you liked the look Thanks for your comment!
Love the results from shoot thru umbrella. That's awesome. Thanks JP for sharing this lovely video.
You are welcome! Thanks for watching!
This is where this channel shines, with definitive demonstrations. Now I know what to do with my large umbrella.
Great to hear. Enjoy working with the umbrella!
I still get a kick out of your earlier video: Umbrellas Don't Suck! That is the one that pushed my buttons and made me an umbrella lover. This video takes it a few steps farther with additional tips and techniques to squeeze even more quality into the images. Thank you. PS. Hope you noticed Sophie stayed involved behind you and agreed with your explanations. I say bring her back!
Thanks for your comment! And yes, Sophie was great to work with!
I think the side by side comparisons are great
Glad you like them! Thanks for your comment!
She is gorgeous
Thank you for watching and keep on clickin!
Thank you!!!! For this class!
You are very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Great content explaining and demonstrating how to use the 7ft umbrella. I have the 7ft silver interior that I've used on a couple of occasions. It's so huge and due to space limitations I'm unable to maximize it use. However when I'm able to use it, the quality of light it really good. Thank again for the great content.
You are very welcome! Thanks for your comment!
I just bought the white/black one, but haven’t had the opportunity to use it yet. Thanks for a great pre-use lesson!
Hope you enjoy it! Thanks for your comment!
Nice!
Wow these are huge umbrellas!
Keep up the good work!
Thanks! You too! Have a great week!
New subscriber/new photographer here. Really enjoying your channel -- I'm learning so much from your tutorials -- thank you!
Welcome aboard! Thanks for subscribing! Glad to hear you are learning a lot!
Thank you, this is an amazing tutorial
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for your comments!
Thanks for the video, it's come at the right time as I am trying to decide between a 165cm and 130cm white reflective parabolic umbrella and of course the question of white vs silver vs shoot-through is always present. I shot a lot with a medium sized shoot through for portability many years ago, and have since shot with various sizes of softboxes from 95 & 120 octa to 160 strips and I miss the simplicity of the umbrella but the reality is that I shoot a lot of corporate portraits so glasses are a real and constant challenge. My solution can be to turn the subject away from the key light and sacrifice light quality or raise a smaller softbox or strip light as key to be out of the reflective glass surface but it's always a battle with low ceilings. I was hoping I could add a white umbrella reflecting directly down as an option for seated subjects. Ceilings are the enemy. Anyway you have awakened my love for the realistic fill of the shoot through.. I still love the catch light of a 65cm round softbox and soft wrapping of a 120 octa though. Also to consider is lens flare from this large shoot through, it can be an issue without flagging the light. Some lenses are really sensitive (Sigma 105 f1.4). I look forward to your outdoor video. Yes indeed I have have many umbrellas tumble and softboxes too, wind is a beast, especially when light is raised outdoors. I use a 95 octa with only inner diffuser and with the back end open to let wind pass through and many sand bags, raise to 2 to 3m for groups. Still great light but safer. What are your solutions I wonder for this 7"...
There is just no better solution for the wind except for sand bags or tying the umbrella stand to some camera cases. And collapse it when you are not shooting.
Thank you !
You're welcome! Thank you for watching!
I normally shoot into white one with the black backing but I remove the small reflector on the strobe.
I use it for large groups and it hath my subjects with nice soft light without being overexposed.
It sounds to me like what you are doing is allowing the light to escape outside of the umbrella and bounce off the walls and ceiling to fill in the shadows. It is an effective way to work but you won't get the same result unless there are walls and ceiling nearby.
Umbrellas are exciting
Yep, they are fun to work with!
Thanks
You are welcome. Thanks for watching!
Thank you for this tutorial. With a 7 ft, can you keep it farther from the subject and still get soft light, where its diameter affects the falloff rule? (Or, is light size already part of the rule!)
You can use it farther back from the subject but it will not be as soft. As you move it back it will become like a 45inch then a 35 then a 24.
Next tutorial should be about using a diffusion in front of white and silver umbrellas and a silver reflective cover behind a shoot thru.. TIA.. 👍
That sounds interesting. Thanks for the suggestion!
Could you please do a video with the translucent umbrella with a family and then a fashion shot?? :)
Same concepts and techniques apply for more than one person or fashion!
If you used one of the umbrellas with the black backing and but diffusion in front, would that give you the same effect as the shoot through umbrella?
It would not. The shoot through umbrella is translucent to the light bounces through the umbrella and the umbrella works like a huge soft box in a way. The black umbrella blocks the light from passing through it. Does that answer your question?
6:42 the transluscent umbrella is also appearing warmer because the light is now bouncing off the yellow wall.
That is a good point. Thanks for sharing!
And if you take of the head modifier of the flash?
That spills the light out further. So you have less control.
@@TheSlantedLens and it would be more like a fill light?
Are you using a video light that stays on? Or are you using a flash?
We used the Westcott FJ400: www.fjwestcott.com/fj400-strobe-400ws-with-ac-dc-battery?acc=d09bf41544a3365a46c9077ebb5e35c3
So... can the FJ400 be used as a continuous light source? I thought it was a strobe.
It is a strobe. We used strobes in this tutorial.
I bought a translucent umbrella but not as big as this as I have a smaller space
Enjoy shooting with your umbrella!
Why did you leave the metal reflector on the strobes?
The reason I leave the metal reflector on the strobes is because it doesn't allow light to escape outside of the umbrella and bounce around and change the quality of light.
Why is the background darker in silver/ black vs the white/black umbrella if the distance of the subject to the camera and the background are the same?
Not sure what you are seeing in what part of the video. I must have turned the white umbrella slightly more towards the background. If you share a time stamp we would be able to share a more specific answer.
5:54 does a white/black umbrella have more spill than a silver black? thank you so much for replying.
What light are you using?
That is the Westcott FJ 400:
www.fjwestcott.com/products/fj400-strobe-400ws-with-ac-dc-battery?sca_ref=2860291.nGJy3bTrXJ
io credo che i dati della prima didascalia tra Silver e White siano invertiti, prima viene Black-silver e poi Black-white, basta controllare il contrasto!😜
Thanks for watching and keep on clickin!
What if you lower the subject?
I am not sure what you are meaning by your question.
To move the hotspot! :)
Ever want to see what a nervous model looks like ? 4:42
I think se is a bit tired.
But, is it beautiful?
Yes, you have lots of control and you can get the look you want with some practice!
Please stop the with the word wrap!! Light does NOT wrap, it travels in a straight line. The reason shadows are soft coming from a large light source, is that light is coming from multiple positions across the surface area of that light source.
The word wrap implies that light is bending, which it is not... very confusing for beginners.
Thanks for your comment. Technically you are correct. I bet you have a very organized sock drawer!
