After reading The Tulip by Anna Pavord this summer, I'm so happy to see this video and see that the broken tulips are still being produced by the same viral methods and are still available to purchase! I think I might have to plant some in my garden this fall.
Hi , I love listening to you Summer and your expert advice. It’s so good that you always use botanical names for us Europeans, thank you. I purchased some of the variegated tulips from Aldi this year and was pleased to discover them and other on your video. I purchased a pink version of your rubra elegans from Lidl. Perhaps I found these rare species because the shop I mentioned are German/European. I live in France. I believe Duc isn’t pronounced duck, but refers to the English Duke and noblesse for the name of the tulips. Did you know that tulips originate in Turkey ?
I love broken tulips, many of those you show are old english florists tulips that are still grown by a handful of enthusiasts over there I used to have a collection of them but they need very rich soil & frequent division to keep going I eventually gave up on them but they are gorgeous yes
Also a great read is The Black Tulip by A. Dumas, should be made into a movie…l love learning the history behind flowers and plants, thank you Summer! 🌷
Thanks for this video. I have been growing a lot of species tulips but didn't know about the heirlooms. My first career was as an art historian and it would definitely be fun to grow the amazing tulips pictured in 17th-century still lifes. I don't know what it is about tulips, but they are addictive.
Wonderful video. Loved the sweater! I was looking at that basket and wondering if it might be a Longeberger? Tulipmania & The Tulip both satisfy the bibliophile in me! Then too, I find Stamp US Scott 5043 "Botanical Art - Tulip" to be an attractive forever stamp of the Rembrandts for my philately flare. Always love visiting an exhibit of Tulips at the Philly flower show! Always appreciate you and yours ❤️
Beautiful heirlooms! Such beautiful blooms for this mornings episode -thank you💚 Also, I have to ask if your shirt matching the episode so perfectly has a history behind it? You’re looking lovely as always, but that shirt seems to have something to say😊
When you said this virus is "cosmopolitan", that made me think of a question I've had for a while. If we conducted a census of a compost pile in N. America vs. Europe, vs. Africa vs. Asia.... Are all the microbes the same species? If we take a banana peel and put it in a compost pile in all these different locations do the microbes break it down just the same? So many other directions this research can take; we need much more research into the micro world.
Where did you buy all of these beautiful tulips here in the USA? Noticed only one that had dark stems the purple/ brown color in the flower. Is that very unusual?
My co-researchers and I made a very nice article about tulip breaking virus. Ágoston J, Almási A, Salánki K, Palkovics L (2020) Genetic diversity of potyviruses associated with tulip breaking syndrome. Plants 9:1807 (1-25).
I’m truly impressed by how you highlight the natural beauty of this location🥰🥰🥰
In LOVE that broken Tulip sweater 💚

As a former horticulturist / grower for The Allen Haskell Horticulturist Co. we had some of The oldest tulips in the world.

Summer - where did you get that basket? I’ve been looking for one similar to use the in the cut flower garden. TY

Thank you for sharing. Can’t wait to see the video of the tulips next spring 😁
Summer, LOVE your jumper, looks fabulous! Where is it from?
Didn't know there were heirloom tulips, but why wouldn't there be? This was really enlightening.

I love species tulips, being shorter they are great for borders. The McClure and Zimmerman catalog has a nice selection! 🌷

Humans are cosmopolitan. Humans live in communities. Do all people in every community look the same? No.
I wish this country would start growing tulips in abundance as they do in the Netherlands so we wouldn’t have to import from so far away.
Bellissimo 😊😊😊😊😊

Question: When planting Tulips in the ground, so I put my tulips in the ground, I water it. Do I need to keep it moist all winter?
OK FRIEND. WHERE DID YOU SCORE THAT SWEATER?
How will you keep these tulips for next year? Do you did and store?
They are perennial. 6:12
