Squirrels tend to be put off alluim bulbs by there scent. You can also grate a few flakes of scented non-bio soap too, again scent deters squirrels. I guess if they are very hungry there is a chance that they will eat them though.
For small bulb planting I use a handheld apple peeler, the pointy end is great for weeding too. 👍

Please show the container when it blooms. Also do you raise the container up from the ground , for better drainage?
