@@ethannethery2 YES it would be hard to knock the PISTONS out You'd most likely BUST the PISTONS to PIECES getting them but it can be done I've seen ENGINES about like that but they did get all 4 6 or 8 PISTONS out of them busted some but got em

This brings back memories. My friend and I changed the 1275cc A series engine on my father's Morris Marina when we were 13. It was on ramps and we lifted the engine out using a scaffolding pole and rope. Head gaskets blew so often we could do them in an hour. Happy days!
Did they produce an after market head gasket made from copper or some other soft metal to address that problem. I have a mental note about that from way way back. (I'm in my late sixties now. )
I actually learned a lot on this episode, mainly about distributors.
Should be a rare thing unless you tinker with a car like this one

With the engine being so small I wonder if it would be possible to remove all the electricals, remove the rocker cover, remove the oil pan, and submerge it in a boiling or just really hot tub of vinegar.
It would be a really goofy way to unseize an engine but would be a very interesting video.
Heck it might work on the starter too. I would love to see what vinegar would do to that.
I’ve pulled my geo engine 3 times. I feel pretty bad ass when I say I carried the long block from my geo across the property to my shed. Lol granted it’s a 3 cyl. Really been enjoying your videos. Mook bringing in the “wtf” factor lol!

Just a heads up bit of advice / info for you guys. In 1968 when your MG Midget was manufactured, all or very nearly all, British cars were mass produced with positive earths. Which lasted through from the 1950’s and well into the 1960’s. Superb content to watch, as always. Great to see you walk and talk us all through both the time & the electrics. Keep up the good work! Britain didn’t go Metric until well after this was built. We call it Imperial rather than Standard.
As the MG factory made these cars over the years, they gradually installed American fittings.. in place of British Standard [sometimes called 'Whitworth']. In my '71, the only British Standard fitting that I found.. was the drain plug for the cooling system on the carburetor side of the block: it's in between an American
5/8ths and a 3/4ths. You really need a British Standard wrench to move it.. such that it doesn't slip on ya!
@@34Packardphaeton don't forget we also had British Standard Fine as well as Whitworth. Just to mess with your head a bit more when rummaging through your tin of bolts.
@@34Packardphaeton Not quite true. They weren't American fittings they were always Imperial until they moved to Metric in the '70s. On post WWII cars there were very few Whitworth fittings used although the Whitworth thread profile was used (as on the Mini crank / flywheel bolt for example). 'British Standard' was how all threads were named as in 'British Standard Fine' (BSF) or BSW. That drain plug was probably British Standard Pipe (BSP) if it was tapered.
Wrench sizes for BSF were marked according to Across Flats (AF) so a 5/16" BSF bolt used a 1/2" spanner / socket / wrench.

@@Ragnar8504 If you mean Imperial / Freedom fraction sizes yes they are as they both use the size of the head as the identifier for the spanner / wrench not the thread size. For example Americans will use UNF thread standards whereas the earlier British threads were BSF. Both use the same spanner
Metric spanners are similar. An M6 threaded bolt needs a 10 mm spanner
My son had an MG when he was seventeen, he is now fifty one. He and I worked on that thing more than he drove it. The two carbs were a lot of trouble, the throwout bearing on the clutch was much different than anything I ever saw. He decided it was a piece of crap and sold it. He went to a VW bug and loved it. He still loves VW bugs.

Almost all of old British machines used imperial and only the “newer” stuff is metric.
Like all the new "American" stuff - which is also metric..... This is all Imperial, but British threads are different than American ones and are not compatible.
That's not quiet true.
Old Brit stuff went over and survival is better there than here.
So you get the old tat.
However MG/Leyland/Austin/Morris all used imperial as did Triumph.
Most were all out of business in the 80/90's and the rest of the world cars were made here in the closed factories due to them being fitted for free (paid by tax payers)
And the gov paid the companies to bring work to the mass unemployment.
So the newer stuff isn't. Aston Martin, (the late) TVR, and Rolls Royce, Bentley, and Morgan (as well as a fair few more) are not really outside the UK (or Europe) unless your on the main list here.
I don't think any are under English ownership aside the smaller ones.
As a Series Land Rover rebuilder, certain fasteners often caused me to exclaim, "you Whitworth motherf*cker!" several times.
Ever heard of Witworth? Now theirs a whole new set of spanners you need. Allot of very old english stuff used witworth.

every trip to the petrol station in my mini used to be £10 for the petrol, £5 worth of oil and 20p to put air back in the tyres because the alloys were porous. It was like owning a 2 stroke.

The Brit car show here has on the registration page that a fire extinguisher and oil drip pan are required. :-)
It's called a constant change function, it's never in long enough to need an oil change.
All those old cars rely on a bit of seepage to keep everything lubricated. These cars were built by machinists not robots so the tolerances are not as tight as they are today. All that said, they are meant to leak a bit - and so were everyone's cars from that era.

This video somehow reminds me of the world record in changing the engine in the former East German Trabi car. 12 minutes total. From running engine to running engine. Taking out the old one and putting in the new one... :-)

Not even once. I've been around old cars literally my entire life, I'm 30 now, and it never once crossed my mind and never seen it done before.
I've never worked out in a corn field in full lighting though where it would be that hard to see it either 😂 I'm definitely going to remember it if the situation ever comes up where it would come in handy though.
I'm 54 years old. When I was like 12 years old my dad taught me this to use brake cleaner or carb cleaner to check points and the coil.

My dad gave me free reign on car maintenance by the time i was 14 but i proved to him i knew what i was doing and i cared about them. Up till the time i moved out i was the only person he let work on what was his 72 Pontiac Catalina, that one he passed to me, his 65 Fairlane 500, 86 Monte Carlo SS and my moms 90 Porsche 944.
I hated that porsche with a passion though, even changing the oil took a couple hrs because of the skid plates underneath you had to remove. For repayment they gave me what used to be my brothers 88 iroc-z when i was 15 and helped me get parts to get it roadworthy in time for getting my license.

@@agilchrist73 I do actually have one in my car! Yes it doesn't like to be revd over 6000rpm stock and the exhaust setup is not good for power. But if you don't over rev it they are bulletproof!

dunno if this is common in the states, but joe lucas is known as "the prince of darkness" here in the uk, because of the excellent nature of lucas electrical parts, esp lighting circuits.

First engine I swapped by myself, I had a floor jack, an air wrench, and hand tools. I built an a-frame with a 1/2 ton chain hoist myself to handle the actual lift (fully dressed 302). Yes, anyone can do it.

Great to see this. You'd never find one abandoned in this condition in the UK that's for sure. When you were lifting the engine in I was yelling "use shorter bloody ropes!" 😁
Sitting here in my Junkyard Digs tee shirt I just got. Two stickers were included. Sweet. But disappointed I didn't get a bad glow plug as well.
The separation between the clutch frictions is normal, its like a wave spring plate in there to smooth engagement.

Seeing Cole struggle made my whole day. I love his channel, but seeing the pit viper wearing farm boy struggle was priceless.
I had to take a break... it was too much.
That bloke with all the MGs - is he open to adopting? His garage had a whole lot of cars I would love to spend time polishing and detailing and....and....well, anything to be near them, really! That TR4 sounded magic, although it would have been better if they raised the revs to where all four cylinders were firing.
I like the technique for bleeding the Master cylinder. Going to use that one myself when I bleed the rebuilt Brake Master when put it in my Stag - a lot easier than bench-testing it.
The new 1275 engine sounded like she fired on 3 rather than 4, but since it wasn't exactly a measured dose for each cylinder, its of no consequence. You gave a great explanation on how to find TDC on the little car as well - not something that everyone would know how to deal with when faced with a little A-series engine (or "half an engine" as an American mate of mine once called them). Not many people realise that you can push the dizzy round so far to line a plug lead up with the right cylinder either.
And as many people who own British classics will tell you - they ALL leak oil. It's when they STOP leaking oil that you know you are in trouble, because it means there's none left in the engine! British cars leaked oil by design in order to coat the undercarriage so that the salt used on British roads did not affect the chassis frame so bad. It was a primitive form of rust preventative......well, at least that's what a bloke who worked for the Triumph Works team at Canley (in Coventry, England) once told me 😊
Looking forward to the next one, but make sure you have a spare axle or two handy as they do occasionally pop when stressed by doing donuts or line-locking. Also, don't do the donut in first gear - use second - for two reasons: first gear in the early boxes was still a straight cut gear, so no synchromesh and you will run the risk of destroying the idler gear. First gear is only good for about 10-15mph tops at full chat, so use second to take off and you will be in the power band well enough to keep at least one wheel spinning in the dirt after a second or so.
Lastly, if there was another wire on the coil, it was probably for the rev counter, so it needs to be on whichever side of the coil goes to the dizzy. I do not believe the A-series ever ran a cable rev counter, so if needs be a wire could be run from the tach to the correct spot.

The reason the fittings are “standard” rather than metric is because we didn’t start using the metric system till the late 1960’s. The midget was introduced in 1961. So everything is in standard or as we call it “imperial” measurements.
Americans are often surprised that we still use miles, and measure ourselves in ft and inches. We are still at least partly in the dark ages with the USA!
And we buy fuel in litres, but measure economy in MPG! What is that about!?
you guys should work on an older truck from the 50s era. it seems like you do a lot of 60s and 70s trucks but you gotta show the older ones some love as well

@@justindean3511 Two things: I see a lot more of just about any American car from 1968 than any other country, and there's no such thing as a 1968 F-150. They had the F-100 and F-250, but the F-150 was introduced in 1975

Because there aren't any throttles on the engine yet... if you watch closely, he's disconnecting the positive side of the coil from the battery to keep the engine from truly over-revving.

They're standard because the 🇬🇧 went to the metric system in the early 70s, your car predates that.
It's actually a 1968 MG Midget that originally came with a 1275cc engine.
Yep, all the way through to the end of the original MG and Triumph in 1980 everything is standard except for some brake parts on the verrry late cars.

England started officially adopting metric in 1965, we use “ imperial” which is a version of what they used prior to metric. That is the explanation of why this car isn’t metric.
I like how you show how it can be done with minimal equipment. Just need to be creative and think outside the box. I really enjoyed the video you are very knowledgeable on how things work.

matt sez my dad spent nearly a week (working after work)trying to get the engine back into a Morris Minor. In the end, we took the gearbox out on Saturday morning, and had the whole thing back and installed before lunch. The gearbox was a b@@@h to reinstall, even out of the car.

I miss working on cars to be honest. Then again the way I was taught was basically, "here's the part, you know where the tools are go replace it." I tinker with things where I can and have helped some people from time to time. Done more than a few tune ups, repairs, and brake replacements under a tree across the road from the apartments I am at.
Sadly my truck has a blown head gasket but being in an apartment I don't have much of a chance doing a replacement myself, plus it's the only vehicle. Limping by for now and hoping to come across a replacement a few years newer that has been rear ended at LKQ. Pull engine and trans then maybe get lucky and find a place to do the swap. Won't be doing the lift it with some ropes though, tore up my shoulder 20 years ago and when I did that I broke the end of my clavicle. Didn't find out till 15 years later even though I did go for an X-ray the day it all happened, guess they couldn't be bothered to actually see it...

The building industry were the first to implement this system in the 1960 's . I can recall my late brother telling me that feet and inches would be obsolete by the '70's . Well, l 'm still trying to grasp it even now! As a Formula 1 fan l still get frustrated when the commentators get excited when the cars are doing over 300kph! But when babies are weighed at birth

And of course weird packaging sizes. I'd say the Germans did one thing right when they switched to the metric system in the late 1900s: they simply rounded all the old units to the nearest metric equivalent, so a German pound is 500 g.
They should have rejected it, like they did with the Euro.
My old man used to buy and fix up or part these out in the early 80s. He still jokes to this day how a small chinese socket set and few screw drivers were all it took to disassemble the whole car. He also would pull engines with just some ropes and the branch of a big Maple tree. Keep the videos coming you 2 and Thunderhead289 put out some good content.

I grew up working on old British cars. They were so simple and easy to work on with only basic tools and knowledge, especially the A series engine. This was used in anything from the Morris Minor to the Mini.
The lesson you teach on car repair and the thought process to get to an answer is invaluable! thanks for being on professor!

It CAN be done. My guy, J, restored our 1972 MG Midget (Survivor) with nothing more than a $40 swivel head socket set from Harbor Freight. The only special tool is the Armstrong wrench for the shocks. We have one. Talk about a rare tool. WOW! I literally had to prove I owned an MG to buy one from the antique shop. It was very spendy. Happy to loan it out if you reach out. If you DO reach out, we have a few dozen tips on how that tricky stuff comes apart. ;)

The car is from the imperial realm.
As the British tried to take over the world, and took most of it. They also went to call out a sizing of tools.
The metric was a French thing, which of course there was a lot of wars with.
Another size was Wentworth. Also a beer company name now. But they're older. I used to have both sets when doing restoration work of even customers cars. Then around the early 1990's the English went metric but had been going metric since 1977 I believe.
The mg being British and part of Austin, and layland the cars were old, the a series being a 1940s engine design. Which was kept in many rovers. And kept the engine, performance and reliability rates down.
