@Lucy Logan I agree, I put hundreds of hours into this game and its DLC, all it needs is a really well done graphical makeover, nothing about the gameplay needs to change save maybe some animation additions.

For me, Dragon Age lore is the most interesting in terms of high fantasy genres. And the characters just make the game 16x more immersive with their unique origins, realistic motives and memorable personalities.
Yes, DAO is the best Dragon Age franchise out there but Inquisition is not that bad either. It’s Bioware’s reluctance to let the game be modded is what killed it. I played Inquisition once and shelved it after that. Without mods, it has no replayability appeal. The story and characters in DA:Origins are amazing, probably one of the few games where I can remember the names of the characters and their story. Morrigan with her mom issues, Sandal with his enchantments, Alistair with the throne dilemma, Sten the Qunari prisoner and so much more. I bought DA:Inquistion just to see Morrigan again to get closure, that is how good the story telling in DA:O
dude if you add the Witch Hunt DLC ending in the Tapestry she says that she married the Warden and he raised Kieran with her huhu I forgot to add that part. she just mentions that she misses him huhu WHYYY
fun fact: if your save data/tapestry of dragon age origins has Alistair *stay* a greywarden instead of becoming king he ends up being Hawk's contact in DA:I and you get some story content with him.
@@tommyinthewell Are those games focused on microtransactions, LGTBQ stuff, have characters so bad that you wants them to die and still focus on romance with them? And made by EA hostage?
DA:O was such a masterpiece back in the day. Played through it so many times. The whole lore and dark tone with the old school gameplay was just 👌 Shame we may never see it go back to this 😪
I only ever cared about Origins. It just feels more satisfying to me. I also love the dialogue and characters a lot! Not to mention the ability to play as different races (each with their own start up introductions!) Let's not forget about the cool skills! Shapeshifting into Spiders, Bears and a Swarm of insects(all of which had a cooler version if you got the max level shapeshifter). Then there's the Ranger skill that allows you to summon a Bear, Wolf or Spider to fight along side your party! (They also spawn as stronger more badass versions if you fully upgrade the Ranger skill.)Then there's the Mabari War Hound companion! I could literally ramble on, but this is only the tip of the awesome iceberg that is Origins.
@@SigvaldtheMagnificentPrince I only played Origins and 2. Dragon Age 2 was faster, but they took so much away from what made the original best. My disappointment after I completed the second game prevented me from trying inquisition.

Great vid. Made me sad however, knowing Bioware is pretty much dead. Name is all that remains. The magic, the style, the feel is just gone and replaced by EA and bullshit.
@@alalalala57 people like you just throw that word around even though you provide no reasons for it to be true. I swear you just enjoy saying it, sort of like extreme feminists who throw around stupid words too. You probably claim to hate them but you act exactly like them.
Dragon Age: Origins was such an amazing game and one that Bioware has had difficulty replicating. What I enjoyed the most from Origins was the variety of different origin stories your character could have and the wildly different paths the story could take. Are you a noble from the house of Cousland who forgives Loghain for his betrayal or did you kill him in hand to hand combat. Or did you have a champion kill Loghain for you? Were you an elf that came from the quarter or an elf that came from the forest? Did Alastair marry Arnora and take his rightful place as king or did he get so upset with you for sparing Loghain that he became a useless drunk? This is what I desperately wanted from Dragon Age. 2 was a massive disappointment in this regard and Inquisition was even worse. But the reason Inquisition failed for me wasn't for the story but for the awful pacing. Running around on one map for hours on end collecting leaves and bushes and trinkets was a mind numbing experience. Even the final villain was a massive disappointment. I heard the DLC was better but I honestly couldn't bring myself to play it. Inquisition didn't have the magic that Origins had. I have been tempted to replay Origins but that game has not aged well. So I'm stuck in limbo when it comes to Dragon Age. Great video!
Can confirm the Deep Roads dlc (Descent) and the final elven story DLC (Trespasser) are 110% worth playing, because the quest and map design is exactly like in Origins. You won't be plagued by open world garbage. They're better than the entire rest of Inquisition. If all of Inquisition was like these DLC, it would be a perfect game. Jaws of Hakkon was very forgettable and very skippable too. Iirc it was mostly Qunari related, but used open world map design (pretty much a second Hinterlands), you got more garbage to collect (more shards, ugh) and the quests always had you running way too much. The boss fight was good, but not worth chewing yourself through all the other shit in the DLC.
The Silver Ninja I disagree. I found origins to hold up really well. I'd even add it's one of the best from last generation rpgs in terms of that if you're not nitpicky about graphics.
Naw it aged well. Graphics were bed even when it was released but you want to know why it is fine? Everything is recognisable, that and mechanics are what makes a game age well and DA:O delivers.
Not aged well!!? The auto attack AI tactics tool is miles ahead of DA2 and Inquisition and unique to DAO you can play 80% of the game without pausing ..the graphics are ok by today's standard not bad.,but graphics are not what makes an RPG....and for story and variety it blows all games in the genre out of water for the time. Up there with the greatest!?

I know, DA2 was shit and DAI is okay but nothing like Origins. Mass Effecr 3 and 4 are hot garbage, SWTOR is good IF you are a Starwars superfan and otherwise nothing special. What happend Bioware?
Bioware before Dragon Age Origins: lets make an RPG that pays homage to our classics like Baldur's Gate, but can still appeal to a modern audience. Bioware after Dragon Age Origins: hey remember all the things that made Dragon Age Origins a big commercial and critical success? Yeah forget that.
blame ea. mass effect sold better so da took it's style if anything dao should have came out before mass effect 1 like planned. then the shift would not be as jarring.
@@aeonlincoln5474 Pretty much all the top talent has left Bioware ages ago. Sure it still carries the name of Bioware, but it isn't the same thing anymore... Also EA.
I just restarted playing this game the other day. I could not find a newer recent game that has the same aspects, gameplay, mechanics as DA:O so I dove back in to it. The graphics I think hold up pretty well. I'm also playing it with no mods. Really great game. Possibly my favorite. First playthrough on Xbox 360, and the rest on PC.
It's kinda weird how the brain works, when you are used to modern graphics you at first think the game looks quite bad, but after a while you start to adapt and all the sudden you think the game looks great.
Whenever people say that _'DAO looks ugly as sin'_ and _'doesn't hold up, I literally can't play it'_ I feel like I'm from another planet Maybe I've played enough 'old' games to not be bothered, or maybe it's just that the graphics aren't as important to me as the story/gameplay/voice acting/music But yeah, I think Origins still looks pretty fucking nice, and I've played it just recently for the first time Didn't even bother to mod it, because I just don't see the point: it's fine as it is _*shrug_

@@johnathanera5863 I can understand why its a pretty decent game for many, after all, as an stand alone game, its good. But I played Origins several times before DA2 release, and I couldn't take it. From a masive story of saving the world to a fund raising to get a house. From several enemies and different team members, of wich you could get the best gear for them, to wawe after wawe of the same enemies over and over until you defeated them all, and no charachter custamization. But worst of all, from a big story with different endings of wich you could do good or bad and it would make a difference to... two endings, wich will have the same affect at the end no mattrer what you do. Feels more like Bethesda than Bioware.
@@alejandroyava I am sorry for calling out an old comment. My problem is that DA2 was still better than Inquisition. For all it's flaws, I can understand what happened to it, and it was still a decent game, despite all the changes. But Inquisition literally shat on DA, for me. Without a story, I mean I literally only seen a worse story in Andromeda... Without character, see Varic in DA2 vs what they shat out in Inquisition, without a Boss... When a DLC for the previous game, on an old engine, with very many limitations, manages to make the same boss, BUT BETTER IN ALL ASPECTS. Then you fucked up... big time. The only thing I remember about Inquisition is the Dragons and a LOT OF FUCKING ABOUT DOING NOTHING FOR A VERY LONG TIME.
I am going to get endless shit for this but I hope Larian adopts the Dragon age origins gameplay style for Baldurs gate 3. That being The ability to shift between thrid person when exploring and interacting with the world and the top down tactical view for combat and puzzles
@@twinmama42 yeah while I am a big fan of isometric CRPGs they don't have much of a future aside from throwbacks. Blending and building on Origins mix of Thrid person interaction and Tactical combat with a modified D&D rule set could be something amazing.
Icewind Dale, Crysis... but definitely Prince of Persia: Warrior Within collaboration with Stuart Chatwood (of Darkest Dungeon fame) will always rule supreme. No other game blended classical and metal in such a gripping way. And no other game will.
Dragon Age: Origins+Awakening Is in my top 3 all time favorite RPG's. The freedom to be so evil was absolutely fantastic. Bioware used to make games that gave player choices, they don't do that anymore. I played DA:O+A 8 times, wanted to get variety of saves for the sequels. And guess what, I played DA2 twice, and DA:I once. Really shows how the replayability for the sequels were drastically reduced.
Not only the choices but the god damn Lore in the game was absolutely amazing. Reading all the codexes, exploring the world, etc. To this date Origins is one of the best works of fantasy depicting demons so deeply. There have been only rare other instances in fantasy where demons are so well made, what a blast it was! Oh not to mention the amazing dialogue, not only in the choices but in how well written the lines were.

Origins is still one of my favorite games of all times. It feels like a truly epic game. I loved the hours I spent fighting through the Deep Roads. It felt like I worked for the conclusion. The characters were interesting and I loved the more tactical approach to combat. It was a little janky with some bugs that still remain to this day, but the game was an overall joy to play.
Weird. I was replaying it for the first time in like 8 years and just finished a 60-hr playthrough the day before this upload. Nice timing GVMERS, I'll enjoy watching this
Man I miss when bioware used to care about their products. Mass effect one through 3 was amazing, Jade empire was great, KOLTOR 1/2 were also great and dragon age origins I mean do I need to say more? It's the most open of the dragon age series. (Do you wanna play a warrior with a hammer? , Axe? Great sword? Go for it, Crossbow? What about rouge with a crossbow? Also do you want to be a ranger and summon animals to get close and fight for you? What about being a mage and sending out a large influx of *BEES*!?, transforming into animals like a druid, sapping energy exploding people by boiling their blood? Origins was the best compared to it's futurre sequels.
sokumo tanaka Jade Empire was a cool idea with a lot of cool ideas and story beats and a lot of really weak gameplay. I think the easiest comparison is Alpha Protocol - 80% a great game with the other 20% unrepentant garbage.
I loved Dragon Age Origins. The series has one of my favorite video game universe and lore. I hope someday the series gets to realize it's full potential.
Ah a classic back when DLC was almost another game Awakening was 30 hours of content and after that 2 was ok at best Inquisition was empty and dead for me it just didnt feel right but still a good game.
I had no idea they decided to render the epilogues non-canon... it's kinda sad. I guess it makes sense why, but idk man, it was one of the best parts for me. Seeing where everything goes after Warden eliminates the world threat. Honestly, the decisions made, and the crafting of the epilogue is probably what made me care more about my Wardens then any other hero that we have had the ability to play as since then. I always felt less in touch with them, despite having to make all the big choices, it kinda felt... less. Such a good time while it lasted. May my Warden find what he is looking for, somewhere out there, far to the west. Idk, maybe he can slay EA while he is at it too. That would be nice.
Seriously. The weight that those epilogues gave your actions was amazing. I can't think of another game where at the ending I felt like I'd played a character who wasn't just one and done, but was historic and had this massive influence. It really felt like the world changed under the player's influence and your heroism earned this epic reward (being able to ask any one favor of monarch? fucking awesome!) that would endure forever. Martyrdom meant something. Monstrosity meant something. Fighting for freedom meant something. Helping people meant something. And those things meant something forever. Even just getting a glimpse of the ramifications of that was beautiful, to know you set in process chains of events that rippled through the world and reshaped it for better or worse.
I remember choosing the gnome and being impressed how you heard the armor plates hit each other when you moved around and especially when running. The heavier the weapon, the more effort he needed to swing it. Loved all the attention to details and helped enjoy it even more.
Man Dragon Age was so much fun, and I unlike some actually Enjoyed the second game, I really liked the characters and character customization. Inquisition was decent but I couldn't get into it as much as the first two.
I agree, Dragon Age 2 did have some serious issues but I was able to look past them because of the characters and the story. Inquisition's character were just as good but the game was just too filled with unimportant things like big empty maps or side quests we didnt care about. I only really enjoyed my time in dialogue choices, interacting with characters. It is silly this franchise made me listen 10 hours of banter between fictional characters on youtube but it also shows how great of a job they did.
I recommend you Pillars of Eternity. It's isometric and more complex, but if you liked DA:O, you will be familiar with how it works. It's made by Obsidian, the guys who made KotOR 2. They're better at being BioWare than BioWare.

I first played DA:O in September 2016 - what a fantastic game, still very playable, even today. I was blown away by the rich lore and stories, the interesting party members and NPCs, by choices, that really mattered and a combat system you could either play action-heavy or strategic, but best of all a working party-member AI you can tweak at your leisure. All this combined makes playing the game and expansions so satisfactory. A masterpiece of its time and still one of the best RPGs made, ever. In my personal hit-list of RPGs it's only surpassed by The Witcher 3. I'm looking forward to parts 2 and 3 of your mini-series.
I love dragon age, but with their new trend towards "Live Services" I don't think I want DA4 anymore. Especially since they want it to be "Live" Please just make a good singleplayer RPG. PLEASE.

After the second, I don't feel Inquisition was a disappointment, it was a great improvement over it, but I never enjoyed the world, story and characters as much as in Origins. They were still more interested in making it like Mass Effect, which always have been more like a movie-ish story, your choices aren't that important, but you do affect how the movie moves along, where Origins really made me feel like I was choosing how it all was going to go, it never judged me for my choices, it only presented a them, but the world did judge. I don't think Bioware was/is able to do it again, some blame does go on their own shoulders for that, especially not now when key members are gone.
@@geminityy That's what 2 feels like to me, like they wrote a good ending, but rushed everything up to it, creating a bland new part of the world, superficial characters and good/bad choices. Inquisition feels like they tried creating deep characters, a good story and a rich world, and they succeeded some of the way in that. The world is well made and, feels as alive as Origins, if not more. There's several well written characters and a couple of bad/weird ones. The story is interesting from the start and gameplay wise, it is great to play it like Origins and I enjoyed the Inquisitor parts as well, wish there was more of it, but I do hate those fetch quests you get from camps, the game would be better without them. I do kind of get the soulless part, it's still not nearly as deep as Origins, but I do not get the love for 2, beside its ending I cannot see a single ting it did even a little bit better.
@@SSDhehe I think it was at the time. I don't think they have the writers or people with ideas for it anymore though. But they've made 2 largely empty games, with somewhat fun gameplay, since and lost one of the 3 studios. Apparently the best of Bioware is on The Old Republic

I don't hate their re-design. It does give them more character. The in-game lore explanation for it was totally whack though (anyone can be qunari, it's an idea not a race etc.). I would've been happier if they had just retconned their appearance instead of weaseling around it and fcking the lore.
@@1InVader1 How is "some Qunari just don't have horns" fucking with the lore? You know Sten isn't human, right? Also, it's less lore-fuckery than "elf/human hybrids are indistinguishable from full humans" just so they could say Fiona was Alistair's mom, retconning his entire personal quest.

So true
I only ever cared about Origins. It just feels more satisfying to me. I also love the dialogue and characters a lot! Not to mention the ability to play as different races (each with their own start up introductions!)
Let's not forget about the cool skills!
Origins is just amazing! But everytime i try to play 2 or inquisition i just exit the game after 5 minutes.
@@SigvaldtheMagnificentPrince I only played Origins and 2. Dragon Age 2 was faster, but they took so much away from what made the original best. My disappointment after I completed the second game prevented me from trying inquisition.

Not a bad idea, but probably better to wait until EA finally shuts it down. We’re more likely to get a more complete picture by then.

You take that back! *sobs* you take that back.

Doing a replay myself. While the graphics are a bit dated, no newer game has those aspects that I love like this game.
Whenever people say that _'DAO looks ugly as sin'_ and _'doesn't hold up, I literally can't play it'_ I feel like I'm from another planet
Maybe I've played enough 'old' games to not be bothered, or maybe it's just that the graphics aren't as important to me as the story/gameplay/voice acting/music
But yeah, I think Origins still looks pretty fucking nice, and I've played it just recently for the first time
Didn't even bother to mod it, because I just don't see the point: it's fine as it is _*shrug_

Also do you want to be a ranger and summon animals to get close and fight for you? What about being a mage and sending out a large influx of *BEES*!?, transforming into animals like a druid, sapping energy exploding people by boiling their blood?
Origins was the best compared to it's futurre sequels.

If this was the ONLY good Dragon Age game, then that's saying a LOT. I was bored to tears with Origins.
I actually liked all three games, they have their own charms, with dragon age origins being my favorite game of all time.

Every time I play this game I tell myself to switch it up and make some different choices. Some choices are just too hard to make....

I like 2 better than Inquisition. I kinda agree with OP. Inquisition felt lacking and ultimately “soulless” to me.
@@JachAnen I can understand that. Thanks for your input. Inquisition left a mark but I don't know if it was a good one.
@@SSDhehe I think it was at the time. I don't think they have the writers or people with ideas for it anymore though. But at the time, the Inquisitor could be a DA Shepard and everything they did, could be improved to make a really good game, I think they showed they could do it. But they've made 2 largely empty games, with somewhat fun gameplay, since and lost one of the 3 studios. Apparently the best of Bioware is on The Old Republic
God I love this channel, and for MANY YEARS Origins was my 2nd greatest game ever played, Still one I absolutely love for what it was at the time, both in the industry and my own gaming career. This documentary...has exceeded all expectations of such a piece. Congratulations on a job supremely well done, I look forward to donating to the project soon.
I mean, I played them all - 100% love the franchise, although 2 was a bit underwhelming and the next one seems to be filled with the now trendy Politically Correct thematic. But still, wtf happened to the Qunari. I mean Seriously.
I don't hate their re-design. It does give them more character. The in-game lore explanation for it was totally whack though (anyone can be qunari, it's an idea not a race etc.). I would've been happier if they had just retconned their appearance instead of weaseling around it and fcking the lore.
I like the qnari from the other games, the qnari of origins is just a human very sick
Damn, I love that closing shot of Ostagar...
Also the music is great, instantly iconic.
I played like 20 mins of origins so far and the older games have so much of a finesse, like they have such style
