When we gamers lament and complain about games having no heart or creativity, just being sequels over and over and designed for cynical monetisation and we ask "why are we left with this? where did all the good games go?" the answer is, we didn't buy them.

@@Hakku1403 idk, I kinda agree with him, I love the game but I can't call it incredible by any stretch of the imagination. Played the game on a PS3 and that shit ran at like 15FPS or something close to that, graphics were ok and the gameplay was less than great, I especially noticed the flaws when I tried 100%ing it, they had a good ideia, I'd even say many good ideas, but the combat, the movement and level design left me kinda bummed out because I really like the art direction, world, story and characters. I still own it and one day I'll come back to try to get that platinum trophy.

I've been playing videogames since 1985. I own about 500 games on steam. And yet, only handful of games I completed. Even more rare that I would be replaying it. Enslaved is that rare game that I completed and played over and over. What a fantastic game this was. Just watching this made me reinstall the game. Now that I have new hardware and widescreen monitors, I can enjoy it again in new immersive ways.

So awesome that you paid homage to this game. It was recommended to me by a friend and I absolutely loved it. If this game was able to launch in the 2004-2008 market, I think it would have done super well and found a hit fanbase with any Jak, Ratchet and Clank, Sly Cooper type fan. I always thought it was so cool that Lindsay Shaw from Ned's Declassified who most people at the time knew for playing Jennifer Mosley was able to switch over and give such a moving, mature performance for this game. Also, props to this game's beautiful level design. Multiple times I would just stop and look at the environment, completely gripped by it's beauty.

When I first played the downloadable demo for Enslaved (remember demos, anyone?) the Prince of Persia Sands of Time style of platforming with the level design was the immediate incentivizing influence that swayed my attention to buy this game on its release. However, this History video has been a nice revelation with the games inspiration coming from the Chinese novel Journey to the West and that books obvious contribution to the games title Odyssey to the West and its ensemble cast with Monkey, Trip and Pigsy. Now I can look upon Enslaved with a more enlightened perception in that the games characters and story have a more profound and significant underlying theme woven into the games narrative structure.
While I too would love see an Enslaved sequel spawn in the near future, I'm honestly more grateful that Ninja Theory continues to evolve their games and themselves with unique, independent titles like Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice.

played Hellblade just last year and LOVED every second of it
I, literally, never ever heard of this game, it's a shame, I'll give it a try later tonight

Personally I loved hellblade too and hated Enslaved. The story didn't grab me and the mechanics were too simple to be interesting. In short I found it to be a 'beige' game. I loathe 'climbing' segments and quicktime events which the game has in spades. Both aren't actually gameplay (no decisions) and would be genuinely more enjoyable in cutscene format. Monkey isn't a mischievous simian, but instead a brutish and idiotic musclebound dude, trip isn't a wise monk but instead a plot device/permanent escort quest.
In short, if you didn't buy it maybe think twice. If you did I'm curious what you thought. If I went from hellblade to enslaved I would have done a big disappoint. I'm curious regarding your experience Erzei

      A) I said nothing about permadeath. Hellblade is a deep psychological exploration of mental illness. It excells in story, gameplay, animations, music, and atmosphere. I would under no circumstance call it a 'souls like'
      B) I can't complain about the characters compared to the book its based off of?.... OK: The characters are bad on their own.
      C) Mocap is pretty common these days. Hellblade for an easy example uses it. Though I'd argue it has nothing to do with gameplay.
      D) If you want fluid, well animated combat play DMC (whole series)
      E) You seem to have taken a very simplistic interpretation of what I mean by decisions. I mean gameplay decisions. You clearly played AC, AC has a handful of weapons/tools/approaches to combat/assasination. Those provide gameplay decisions. Combat in Enslaved was competent, but not nearly as deep as something combat focused (you mostly mash basic attack) and the combat is broken up by hours and hours of climbing and jumping through linear paths. There is literally one way to play through the game, it's like watching a gameplay video with quicktime events.
      F) Platforming games develop platforming as a core mechanic. They have some kind of difficulty or mechanical complexity in the jumping. (Mario jumps on enemies, super meat boy sticks to walls etc.) Enslaved's climbing nonsense is always a long series of contextual 'climbing' locations that are jumped between in sequence without a chance of failure. They're long weird looking corridors.
      G) The thing is a movie trying to be a game and doing poorly at both.
If you take one thing away from this: Hellblade is genuine art and keep its name out your filthy mouth.

One of the most commercially underrated and under the radar masterpieces of that generation in gaming. I played it on launch and loved it but was much too young to really grasp that nuances of it storytelling. Definitely worth revisiting if you have to means too.
If fact I’m quite surprised Ninja Theory hasn’t made any plans to port to this generation of consoles. They could definitely make some massive sales if they did.

The camera controls sometime _suck,_ but otherwise it was _much_ better than I was expecting! Great story and a really well-crafted world. ^^
