The piece you cut out, you could reverse then weld it back in place, then just cap the open ends, maybe make the cut piece longer though for the movement of the shock as the arm moves up and down.
I Don’t have a welder and it’s not symmetrical , it has enough room for the movement 👌 .. if I had all the equipment I would have made a piece probably (not definitely) lol
@@Mrfish2015 😂 as long as it works hey, I’m just ocd when it comes to fabricating things, keep up the good content! Wanna see some more of the Africa Twin out. 😎
Nice upgrade. C90’s are the dogs. I used one as a back up when I was unemployed and 90mpg is a god send when you’re skint. To be honest, I preferred it to my BMW RT but don’t tell anyone.
As others have said, shock other way up. But, also, if you're doing you cutting method, you need to cut extra either side as there's a reason the shock is on pivot style mounts - as the suspension goes up and down, the angle of the shock changes...
Textbook tapework.😆😆😆. I love the stuff, I reckon if you had enough of it, like about three rolls, you could build a workable road bridge! Love the vid.
Great bit of MacGyver, love the work in the garage, its not all just about riding the bikes as our mate Lamb Chops knows. Yes more of these please. I know you did not have any but if you used Duct Tape then its silver and would have seamlessly blended in 😂
Thanks for the shoutout! Just a thought couldn’t you have asked Brooks if it mattered mounting the shocks upside down? As the tops are longer and narrower, or heated the guard up and hammered/manipulated it to allow clearance? Get some Sugru (mouldable rubber) it comes in small packets and different colours and you could make a rubber bung . Thanks again and a great video..
I wanted the adjustment at the top away from the road crap , I thought about heating and bending but that section would be a pain so off it came (if it was symmetrical I would have probably cut and reverse hammered
@@Mrfish2015 cutting and hammering could have worked, I do have a mig welder! Would have been a fun job maybe. Still looks good and solves the problem.
Props for getting it done! Now, something to consider: Get a machinist buddy to make a thicker Al. spacer for the bottom of the spring to move that end up to clear the chain guard. You have room to move the spring. No cutting needed. Part B. If you place the tape at the same angle as the shock then it will look like a painted accent. No trimming needed! Question; are you going to upgrade the springs in the front forks now? :^)
If you are willing to experiment with another guard. Watch a couple videos on ‘paint less dent repair’ and I think you could reshape that thin metal to clear the shock and have no hole.
@@Mrfish2015 yeah, I didn’t mean to pull out the dent, I was meaning just use some of the same techniques to manipulate the metal into the shape you wanted.
Inner tube Old despatch rider trick Put inner tubes over the shocks like gaiter Shock condoms lol and stick a piece over the hole in the chain guard 👍 Its only a BODGE if it DOSNT work ;)
I've watched other UA-cam videos from Japan and Thailand swapping out YSS shocks and noticed they left the chain guards off. Now I know why. Some of them do swap out the chain with a very shiny gold chain to bling them up.
A man after my own heart ! Mr Fish , John why dont you do a full on bike build? I for one would watch from start to finish ! Just an idea old boy.... Stuart the crazeee signaller
How about and im genuinly excited by this , a bike build off between you , Bruce and Rich , we will leave the missenden flyer out as he would probably just employ somebody to do it !
It may be worthwhile next time you've got the chain guard off to put another bit of tape on the inside, sticky side to sticky side, and reinforce the mod.
So can the guys a Brooks Suspension do a longer bottom sections for the rear shocks? May I politely ask how much the shocks were? As the chain guard is alloy, couldn’t you have just dented it in a bit? 🤔🤷🏻♂️
Hi Mr Fish, it’s been a good while since you upgraded/modified the rear springs on your Supercub. I’m over 18 stone and over the recommended weight for the cub and I find that the rear springs do struggle on bumpy roads, with the ride becoming very uncomfortable. So, do you still consider it was worthwhile installing the stronger rear dampers? Also, can you recall what they cost? I ‘m in Somerset, U.K. Thanks, and keep up the good work on your entertaining channel.
Yes mate , a massive difference no sag on the back and no bounce , I used a company called brooks suspension www.brooksuspension.co.uk/ I called them and said what I needed and they were great .. I had different springs put on mine . Give them a call . If you have no luck I’ll try and dig out the receipts for the actual set up I had
@@Matt-pv1kh hi Matt, to be honest I haven’t done this yet. Actually due to some health problems I’ve not been out on the Cub for several months, and as I’ve lost some weight in that time I’m not sure if it will still be necessary. I think I’ll be in the Spring when I next ride, so I’ll decide then what to do. I’m in Bridgwater-are you in this part of Somerset?
I'm 90 kg and the ride is still far too harsh, I have an Innova and the ride is so much better, I'm thinking of trying to just swop the shocks from that to try, yes just up in weston, let me know if you fancy a rideout
could you not install them upside down? i think they go the other way. the adjustment down. that is what the previous models suspension was installed like.
Honda shocks, no matter the model, have been shaped like stemware to clear the guard since forever. Always an ordeal to replace with long-spring "standard".
Master fabricator! Achievement unlocked. If a bodge works, it ain't a bodge, its a fix. Top work Sir.
True , I’ll take that
Good call. I was going to upgrade my old Cub with new shocks and will no doubt have the same problem.
The piece you cut out, you could reverse then weld it back in place, then just cap the open ends, maybe make the cut piece longer though for the movement of the shock as the arm moves up and down.
It’s very thin metal .would it be weldable or would it just distort ?
I Don’t have a welder and it’s not symmetrical , it has enough room for the movement 👌 .. if I had all the equipment I would have made a piece probably (not definitely) lol
Yeah of course, you’d just use a low current to weld it, just need a mig or tig set, and a good welder like myself, 😉 😂

Thanks , No 1 on the list is get to ride it 😂

Never found the front too bad as all the right seems to be rear

Quick question for you, would you trade in the super cub for the hunter cub if it arrives here in the UK? 😉
Nope
You were doing so well untill the gorilla tape. Cant wait to see what you do to the forks. 😂
