A much easier way to pinpoint the start of the events of Super until now is to go by Pan's age. In the final tournament in Z (10 years after the defeat of Buu), she's 4, and she's born in Super. In Super Hero she's 3. That puts the start of Super approximately 6 years after the defeat of Buu, and everything until now in the manga and anime has occurred over the space of 3 years (i.e. 9 years after the defeat of Buu, 1 year before the end of Z).
Dragonball ain’t consistent enough with ages and time for that to be a basis
This is depending on two things - one, where Videl was in her pregnancy during BoG, and how close Pan was to her next birthday in DBS superhero; if you take certain bounds, Super could also take place 4 years after Z, (Assuming Pan is just about to turn 4 and Videl was a) in the beginning of her pregnancy in BoG, and b) BoG took place near the end of the year)
@@nivnavion Videl was definitely not more than her first trimester in, since she wasn't showing, and Gohan didn't know about the pregnancy during BoG. Pan's birthday is definitely a bigger mystery, since it's unclear how much time passes between BoG and the Golden Freeza arc where she's already an infant.
@@badgerforrest-blincoe2879 If you look at ages or years in DB (not character years but the actual year) then super takes place 4 years after Kid Buu’s defeat, which means superhero is 7 years after Kid Buu’s defeat. Then there is the fact that in the peaceful world saga of Z at the end of Z, Pan is 4. Whereas here, Pan would be 6 by that point. Well that’s easy to counter, end of Z has been unofficially retconned, you can start by looking at how old certain characters look, especially Bulma, ntm she was using the dragon balls to keep herself young looking in super, whereas at the end of Z, she suggests that she may start doing that, obviously showing that she has never done it before.
Therefore, end of Z is of no use in determining where Super takes place.
@@nivnavion Still not sure where you're getting the 4 years from. Daizenshuu 7 (which is based on Z, and for sure has definitely since been retconned because of Dragonball Episode 0, and Jaco) says that Kid Buu was defeated in age 774, and Pan was born in age 779. It's not stated when she's born, but she says before the tournament (age 784) that she's 4, so presumably she was born after May 7th. Taking an early estimate, and assuming she was born in June, it's plausible that she could have been conceived in October Age 778. However, a later estimate of her birthday could still put her conception in age 779. I'll concede that the guides give a more precise estimate of the placement of Super to about 5 years after the defeat of Buu, but either way it's still hard to be any more precise than that. As for Bulma's comments in DBZ chapter 324, that's more difficult to explain. She says that it's been 5 years since she last saw Goku, but that's been more or less retconned by the Moro Arc, although it's still unclear how much time passes between the ToP, and Moro and Granolah Arcs, and we still don't know if Goku ever visits after defeating Moro (the only other time we know Goku sees Bulma is when they call her at the start of the Granolah Arc). In DBZ chapter 324 Goku says that Bulma looks older, and she says that next time she'll ask Shenlong to make her look younger, but that doesn't imply she hadn't done that before. It may even suggest, like we see in Super, that she has done that before, but maybe she hasn't done it in a while. Still unclear.
I always said after Buu before end of Z but the end of Z is gonna get changed for the better. Also I believe this being released that it took place in that gap killed all tension

@@deckzone3000 well, the End of Z would HAVE to change. Superhero is confirmed to take place a year BEFORE the End of Z, so stuff will need to be changed. Goku is clearly visiting pretty often with the Briefs, so Bulma’s line about him not visiting for five years would not make sense. Both Goku AND Vegeta knowing about Uub in the manga continuity would change the End of Z as Vegeta didn’t know who Uub was originally. Speaking of Uub, Uub having God Ki is now a thing. These are only a few things that would HAVE to change the End of Z to have it make sense.

To be fair, he is in a human body. What made Buu so deadly was his ability to regenerate. Now he's in a fragile body
Shueshia in their 2018 canon tour did state Super is a sequel so i'm pretty sure they're planning to go beyond the EoZ. They're making so much money now they'll have to anyway. After DBS SH is done in the manga i'm sure they'll move on with the story and it'll actually have some genuine tension back. I just hope it's not as dull as some of the DBS arcs have been.
And a retcon because Goku met Bulma and the others at least the last time in the Moro Arc wich was less then the 5 years.
But most fans say it is just another timeline.

Never had much issue with when it took place. Just the fact it was taking place when it did. Less stakes for starters. Also think it another (of several) scaling f ups. Because as strong as Uub is that power is Buu adjacent which by now is miles behind. The series ends saying someone now like 9 arcs ago is impressive. Or that he jumps that many to matter

Still does, the whole thing about Goku leaving his family/ friends for a number of years, then showing up for tournament, only to leave again with some random malnourished kid from some poor village (yeah I know he's Buu's reincarnation, but still)
Only thing positive about the end of Z was Goku's new Gi IMO
I rewatched Kai last year and it was better than ever... But yeah... The ending annoyed me... Especially them not meeting in 5 years.... They can friggin fly 😂... I'm happy that super retconned that and they're all one big family lol
I can get that, but that also has something to do with the interoperation of Goku people grew up with. A lot of dub fans grew up with the more heroic interoperation of Goku so witnessing that moment would rub people the wrong way.
Though for better or for worse, Super's fight crazed mind-set of Goku that Toriyama approves the most of...Him dropping everything for the promise of a good fight (where the Manga now retroactively made Uub way more potentially strong for narrative sake) now makes sense for that Goku portrayal. Throughout Super he's been spending long swathes of time even Months *atleast* training with Beerus and Whis and that's on a whole other world. So dipping for a while while likely still on Earth is actually some what of an improvement in that regard.
It’s essentially a sequel in all but technically and eventually they will retcon end of Z

Because how much life could goku have gathered from the animals when nearly all of the Namekians had been killed? Actually, I think the term for a show like DBS is called a "Midquel". Also, ten years is a huge amount of time for a series of developments. Look at My Hero Academia or Star Wars: The Clone Wars.

Also, it's more insertquel than midquel because it's changing things more than filling in/explaining anything.
You see, with super it can be both explaining the gap in time from the end of the Buu saga to seeing the 28th Martial Arts to fast forwarding to what should be present day with Goku training a young Uub.
I think Toei forgot, similar to Toriyama, and they are just making it up as they go.
That's possible. Toriyama did forget that there was an SSJ2 and someone had to remind him during the making of Battle of Gods.
These writers can stretch that 10 years into like 100 for writing purposes 😂 already stretched a 1year gap into 10 years worth of writing fair to say toriyama stimulating the Japanese economy

I always thought that DBS took place just a few months after Z, it never made sense to me that it was 5 years after.
For instance you have Vegeta's promise to Trunks about going to the amusement park, and Goku getting the money from Mr Satan. That stuff wouldn't happen half a decade later
When Vegeta told trunks dry your face we're going to the park now..which means he took him that day..so why they act like he took him a decade later 🤣

it is a few years, the callbacks and what have u in the earlier eps (plus the kid characters not aging at all) were just the writers not thinking. like in several other instances lol

It takes place in a different timeline since it's stated within the manga as well as the anime (Z), that there was a 10 years time skip after the Buu arc in which nothing happened and everyone lived in peace. :D

And that's why DB, DBZ , and DBGT is my continuity because Dragonball Super on paper might be Cannon but this trash is all over the place. the second they have to retcon stuff in order for it to fit canonical it failed at best DB Super is a side story.
Well done! This video successfully exploits DBS for what it is in it's entirety. A cash grab waste of time appealing to people who wanted more Dragon Ball Z but in a very boring and simplistic way. When the whole time people just wanted a better sequel. GT was ok but it could've been done way better. That's what DBS was marketed to be "The sequel to Z that fans have been asking for" when really it turned out to be below expectations, Super isn't bad either it's just not what I was expecting. Anyway great vid!

I'm not sure if I've said it here or not, but I don't see Super as a sequal to the original Manga. I veiw the franchise as multiple timelines of continuity. You have the Manga being the prime timeline, then you have the original Anime and Z. Then a timeline where Super's logic has always existed (so it doesn't contradict anything), then you have all the Movies and Specials (Not counting the non-retelling and directly connected Super Movies) take place in their own self contained timelines.
That's how I look at the franchise. But that's just me.
Uub has been given God ki I think (as of the Moro arc) but yeah, cramming a lot into that gap making Super so far a mid-quel.

I've been telling people this for a while now that DBS isn't a sequel and GT IS, but they just don't listen. Finally, I can just link a video.
I’m pretty sure super will eventually retcon gt out because logically the beginning of gt with pilaf and his squad (them being old) literally can’t happen unless someone wished for them to be old (doubt it) . But in my opinion Super will be the in between saga/sequel saga to dbz like I bet after gas and black Frieza shenanigans they will have that same tournament (might breeze past it) and then continue Super because there’s literally no reason financially to cancel it or stop it In general this has been stretched out I think half a century now so people better start get used to color swaps and impossible storyline villains

I think it’s pretty obvious when it would have to take place based on the things you cited, the issue though is that with the addition of Super probably breaks the end of Z and definitely breaks GT.
@@deckzone3000 That’s true of the movies but DBS started off being self-contained enough that it could have taken place in the interim whereas most of the movies (especially the early ones) run into massive issues as soon as you try to place them, and the later ones which are easier to place often rely on continuity created by the early one’s rendering them just as unlikely.
But yeah, DBS has long since ventured into movie territory. Of course, if you disregard the last third or so of the end of DBZ then it’s all fine….

Super would feel more tense if deaths mattered, it’s so frustrating that there’s never downsides, goku black arc they are all just saved by the summon Zeno button, ToP all deaths or erasures were wished to be reversed so no one dies from that, Moro arc the namekians all come back and ffs MERUS comes back which ruins the arc for me so much and then in granolah arc there’s tension but no one died, super heroes did it right though someone sacrificed themself to take down cell max

What makes no sense is how the events of super hero are like a year before the EoZ but in the original EoZ Bulma mentioned that she hadn't seen goku for the past 5 years? Is there any explanation for this or is it just another super retcon
It is just a retcon because they wanted to tell a story for those 5 years, decades after Toriyama wrote that line as part of an epilogue to explain why we're 10 years ahead

You are wrong. Super isn't an interquel. It's a parallel timeline.
Dbz happened. Then gt happened. Goku is still alive and in his prime at the end of GT even though Pan is old, because he got the old Kai's lifespan when old Kai gave his life to bring Goku back vs Buu and said he had about a thousand years left on his lifespan.
after leaving with the dragon they encounter whis who decides to turn back time and decides to let them go down a different route which explains the one leftover time ring that no one seems to know anything about. It's ALL canon!

I find it interesting that DBS started by retconing nearly every GT fact, but it never allowed itself to replace GT.

It came first, named by Toriyama, had some designs from him, and moved forward the timeline passed the manga.
Until modern Dragon Ball gets the balls to outright replace GT, it is the only sequel to Dragon Ball.

For all intents and purposes, it pretty much is a sequel to Z. It takes place after the main body of the story, it's just before the epilogue.

Also they made it a power up transformation rather than a technique where his power doesn't increase like it should be. Children may think new=cool and hype or strong= cool and hype but those of us who aren't kids enjoy intelligent and quality writing. Not mindless nonsense only created for marketing purposes.

GT is more of a fanfiction especially with the second set of dragon balls on Earth that nobody ever bothered to mention 4 reasons never mentioned in GT. Also pan was horrible handled in GT especially the part where a baby sucked on her nipples. Someone had to animate a deer sucking on a 12-year olds nipples. Super Android 17 is also a dogshit character. In Dragon Ball super he was handled 500 times better especially with the fact that we know that he has a family of his own just like his sister and just doesn't show up to die and get fused with an evil version of himself
Since Bulma said it had been 5 years since she last saw Goku and there was a year after the defeat of Buu when Beerus showed up that means all of Dragonball Super happens in a 4 year window of time, between a year after Buu is defeated and 5 years before the tournament at the end of Z.
how far are we into the 10 year time skip? the whole retconning the BoG arc to be 6 months into the 10 year gap instead of 5ish years (Videl revealed pregnant in this arc), kinda makes this whole discussion pointless confusing.
BOG arc is still 4 years after the buu saga, not 6 months. Currently Superhero is one year before the End of Z.

Technically it's an interquel... but thats really semantics/nit picky. I'd say it's equally valid to consider it a sequel cause realistically the end of Z isn't the ending of the story, Kid Buu dying, and Fat Buu being accepted on earth is the end of the story. The 10 year time skip is just an epilog, it tells no story. It's just like "Goku was an ass hat 10 years later" stretched out into a couple chapters.
