I was always against ID cards, but now,I’d welcome it. For reasons including voting in a general election and all the aliens now amongst us. And no,I’m NOT a rabid far right lunatic, just a very concerned British citizen.
@@iainsan I know a lot of people will argue (and I feel a bit stupidly), that if you're innocent you have nothing to fear. That kind of statement anyway. Except, in a state where you're REQUIRED to always have ID, well you can just be vaguely forgetful one morning and you've broken the law. Even the requirement of having ID but not always carrying it, is overkill to me. It's not on me to prove my identity to even the police, I've never lied to the police about who I am, but it's their job to verify that. I can give them my national insurance number etc, but photo ID? Never had that until I was 36 and got a provisional licence for a motorcycle. Which took 6 months, because I had to get a passport first, and my GP was no longer allowed to attest to my identity. Previously that would've been ok, but I guess with so many non British born medical practitioners, they've stopped that. So I needed to find a professional, not related to me, who had known me for over 10 years to confirm I'm me. Which was surprisingly difficult because most people who know me are elderly neighbours and didn't meet the criteria. I also had to get copies of my birth certificate, my mother's birth certificate, my mother's marriage certificate, and this was all during lockdowns so I had it pay for expedited ones, since most were in Scotland, and it may have taken 3 months otherwise for each document. In short, it cost me £400 to get a passport, and a further £200 to get the provisional licence. And 6 months.
The strategy worked very well indeed - up until some lunatics threw proper decision-making out of the window in favour off letting people who often knew little or nothing about what was at stake to decide on membership...and unsurprisingly chose poorly. Now, in the face of vast new transatlantic tariffs and the possible demise of NATO, we're obliged to go begging for help from people who we openly dislike and thus are unlikely to be over-generous. Key lesson: leave diplomacy to the FCO, not stupid voting.

Incidentally on more than one occasion the idea of compulsory identity cards was floated in the UK as a result of the EEC and then the EU, and we really didn't want them. EDIT: it's also not illegal to drive without your licence on you. Illegal to if you don't have a licence of course, but you don't have to have it with you at all times, "The Police are entitled to ask to see your licence at any time and if you do not have it immediately, you will be ordered to produce it to a Police Station within 7 days."
For example, I had never had any form of identification until I was 36 (and only then because I wanted a motorcycle licence). Been arrested multiple times over the years, never been an issue. Got convicted once, still never had any form of ID.
The last time was Tony Bliar. It basically put the very few people who still supported him into the Libdem camp. (He had already lost most of the lefter leaning voters over Iraq, so he wasn't going to win any election anyway, so if your really an authoritarian arse, why not go full out?)
Now we're on the outside, the French, Germans, Belgians, Dutch, Italians, and so-on, would have to screw things up themselves. It's much fairer to let them do it for themselves. Meanwhile, we're planning to move the island to the middle of the Atlantic.

The most important takeaway: TV, our media and Deep-State overlords would NEVER permit a subversive ugly truth-exposing series like this to be made today - and if it tried to mock or ridicule the whole warmongering US-NATO-Israel trifecta the script-writers and would-be producers would be blacklisted and possibly end up in Belmarsh prison. Glad you like the show. Its the crowning glory of British political satire.
The UK is still one of the few European countries where it is legal not to carry any personal identification.
I wouldn't be comfortable at all having that a legal requirement

Might have made it easier to vote for all those adults that dont have id cos they dont have enough moneybto drive or travel.
