every time PJ has a crisis of confidence while painting i feel immensely comforted because painting is like, this thing that makes me so miserable (...at least, during the painting process), that literally no one is making me do, but I do it anyhow and why is it such torture?? anyhow misery loves company so thanks PJ - I appreciate how you share the negativity while maintaining a positive message 👏
it is times like these when i consult rick perry's "creative process": 1. This is awesome 2. This is hard 3. This is shit 4. I am shit 5. This might be ok 6. This is awesome also applicable to many of life's events tbh
the real ones are here for Paul but all jokes aside, I really liked how natural it looked at the end you forgot how it looked before! I always like how you push yourself outside your comfort zone and create things, trying new things sparks new creativity! loving the artistic challenges recently!
oil pastels are absolute bastards, i think you did a wonderful job with them! the painting really tells a story, i even kinda like the penguin-esque seagull. nice of you to make this in loving memory of paul
Wat was really fun to see was how at first, I thought the blue boat had sunk, and it felt like sad painting. Then, the red boat just appeared again on top of the water! And it felt joyful!
Thank you for sharing your little moment of crisis because I think a lot of artists get that and seeing other people feel the same is a huge comfort! Only by challenging yourself and moving out of what you know you're capable of are you able to grow and I love seeing you explore and experiment with new stuff like oils. I think what could be fun is to draw the same picture with different mediums. Pencil sketch, markers, oil (pastels) and such and see how differently you work with the medium, how differently the same picture looks, how it influences the vibe of whatever you're drawing, etc.!
Regarding oil paints: I learned to use oils because I had to (for a class in college) and some of those paintings were nightmares, but once I got used to consistencies and became comfortable with the paints, oil painting became very fun. It's learning how they make sense that really sucks. In the class I took, we did mostly still life paintings, and the first one was just a still life in one single color of paint, to get used to the paints/painting depth/texture, the next one was a still life where we could (should) use every color in our palette but all the still life items were one of the primary colors, and after that we started doing more colorful stuff. One of them was painting in layers/glazing color in--the absolute worst process for me, but definitely helped me learn a lot. Again, oil painting is super frustrating, it's just also really fun if you can figure out how to make it work for you. I feel like chances are low that anyone reads this but I hope it's maybe helpful to someone! I'm also always up for an oil paint chat if anybody wants to talk shit about the entire artform/talk about learning!
I already really loved it at 6:55, your addition was so simple yet so pretty - and ponyo is one of my favourite movies - so i really loved how transparent it was there. But the end result also turned into something beautiful, yet so different and other-worldy! Maybe the hot air balloons are their transportation from the massive ship to the city in the clouds?
Welcome! It's a wholesome community, you'll never see a negative comment around here. Pj is continuously surprising us and he's a wonderful artist who spreads joy. Edit: grammar
oooh when you can kinda see the buildings through the oil pastel sea in the earlier stages (and a bit in the final outcome as well), that looked super cool! the oil pastels ended up blending nicely with the original, loveee the sea and the added greenery especially. & I loved how with each detail you added more story to the artwork! Honestly the ship in the distance being actually humongous in scale is so fun LOL. The original was a lovely painting, but the piece you created seems like a place I'd love to venture to and explore
this was an intensely reaffirming video to watch. as someone who has been watching you create for quite a few years now, its inspiring to be able to see you work with a new medium, challenge yourself, and work through that moment of doubt to continue creating and step out of your comfort zone. I'm gonna start messing with new art mediums and its nice to have this video to come back to when I start feeling the art doubts
“Damn, that’s a good idea”, is what I said out loud when I saw this video title. And I love how it turned out. Would love to see you do this again maybe.
Hi PJ, I really love these kinds of videos of yours. I loved the Bob Ross one as well. You showed us your genuine process, including all the imperfections, the crisis and frustration that every artist is all too familiar with. And even if the result might not have been up to your usual standard, you were not afraid to show it. This video showcased so beautifully how your creativity kept blooming, new little ideas kept popping into your head during the painting process, and slowly but surely, a story began to form within the painting, which then became so cool and charming that in the end, the technical imperfections weren't really that important at all. I feel like we (both as fellow creatives AND as the audience) are way too caught up in this idea that eveything you show to others needs to be polished and perfect, that all the messy parts should be cut out. Especially on the internet. It's really refreshing and comforting that someone as skilled and creative and accomplished as you deliberately shows it all, including the messy parts. Please keep going with this kind of format. It's really inspiring❤
I was a little worried in the beginning about what was going to happen when you showed Jazza's painting, but I like how you respected what the original painting was and where you went with it. Very cool project, don't sweat the little things. It's a new environment, new skillset even if it's in the same field, I hope you don't pressure yourself too much. Stay strong, keep doing what you're doing 👍
I've watched several videos of people doing this, and this is, by far, my favourite! I was worried at first, as I quite liked the original painting. But I love the end result! So many little details that tell a story and invite questions 😊 And it's always good to see the creative process, complete with it's ups and downs, rather than a video that makes it look easy.
The water and mountain look really good, and the hot air balloons really made it, they’re sweet and characterful. Couldn’t tell if you used the oil sticks too, they’re different from pastels, more like oil paint. I love the idea of people just moving upstairs, easy to pop out for a swim I suppose.
I really admire that you step away and come back when doing something new. I watch your videos with my daughter now and seeing you come back and try again is really inspiring for us both. I, also have to, sometimes, step away and come back, and try again and her seeing me do this, and then watching you, as well, really makes an impact. I have been watching you for a long time now and sharing your content with my daughter has been great. She loves to watch your videos! We both do! So again, thank you! You’re a real inspiration for us!
Maybe its cause im tragically uncreative but even just the idea of it underwater i thought was awesome! I wouldnt have even had the confidence to get that far aha, trying to work on it!
At 5:34 it looks like the water people's flat is downstairs and their upstairs neighbours are air breathers. Water people and air people living in the same house :)
To everyone considering doing this !Please make sure the art, whatever form it takes, isn’t culturally significant or a collectible before reusing it or throwing it away. Sincerely from me a collector and lover of arts 😢
I’ve been in art slump for several years now. I don’t even consider myself an artist anymore. I’ve been thinking about doing this to get out of the slump and you have convinced me.
Its actually quite hard to find stuff about oil pastel to watch and research. Sometimes working with it can feel quite scary with my lack of guidance and training with the medium. This was a really comforting watch for when my work gets daunting. Thank you!
The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli is actually my favorite painting of all time. Saw it a lot while I was in college (went to art school) and I have lots of feelings about it, especially after seeing it in person.
I Was Just THINKING,That”Octopus Tentacle”Shouldn’t Be THERE,But Once You RePainted It Especially Over That Octopus Tentacle That NOW,It’s A TRUE Chef’s Kiss Work Of Art,Well Done British Picasso!!😚👨🏻🍳🎨(*Chef’s Kiss Implied Here!!)
Pj, this was so cool! The image reminds me of The Drowned World by J.G Ballard, a story where they really do just refuse to leave the houses and move into the upper floors!
I love these kinds of videos, and PJ, I think you did a great job with this. I love your concept of the world flooding and people living the hills and hot air balloons. I would love to read a picture book or graphic novel set in a world like this. I'm glad that you took a chance on this project, and hope that you recover from the mental damage you seem to have taken while doing it. Also, one more compliment: That is an EXCELLENT jumper your wearing! Kind of want it for myself. So jealous.
i love this! always something ive wanted to have a go at! with the adding black detailing over the oil pastel, you can always try mixing some turps or white spirit so create a kind of paint and use a thin brush for those bits, its the only way i can deal with pastels haha
You need to use a metric buttload (that’s the official measurement) of fixative for it to work! Like really coat whatever you’re trying to fix in it. Outside of course and upwind from fumes ❤️
I actually think you did a really good job at giving a second life and renewed playfulness to a somewhat cliche piece of art! I kind of want to try this with thrifted art now, although anything beyond pencil and pens is not my forte...
I thought the big ship was really beautiful!! HUGE…but beautiful! As was the walled city you put at the top of the cliff!! Really loved this video idea! Would love to see what you could do with the french scene
Your painting remind me of a book I got recommended a few years ago (tho I never got to finish it): Life in the sky by José Eduardo Agualusa. Where the earth flooded and got super hot, so everyone had to start living in these hot air boats in the sky.
oil paints/pastels are always so finicky, i dont think ive ever worked w it without having at least a baby crisis about it lol,, i rlly like the story of the painting and i think u executed it rlly well especially cuz switching mediums is intimidating as hell ! (o7 paul)
This is super incredible!! Oil pastels seem so difficult to me and i hate oil paints so im super impressed by what u managed to achieve ❤❤ thanks for the inspiration and ideas! This seems fun
maybe you should look for something that’s a bit more your style? or something that could be transformed to be more in your comfort zone, don’t get me wrong this was great, that’s just a way it might make it more fun for you! if you want to do it again of course, cause I do think it’s a fun challenge
Oil pastels are my favorite!! I loved what you did with the water in the painting as a template Idea, are you going to muck up the other painting you bought too?
The walking away physically bit is too real, im working on this massive landscape painting atm and Im kinda free forming and learning as I'm going, but because of the size of the canvas i have to move away from it to realise what I'm painting looks far better than how it looks when Im close up
You and sophie should I do a challenge where you both draw different things and have to swap over drawings and each add to the others with no commmunication every 10 minutes until the final product !
It's fun. I would say, don't take it too seriously. It can be good as something that is just kinda supposed to make you smile not be technically perfect.
Lol your name was on my art folder before I took it to the goodwill. I was just too tired to take the envelope off. The lost scroll of Jaden (lore: shouldnt be drawn on by anyone other than me. Because all of that shit has my energy on it. And is thus just as haunted as the witchcraft box of Jaden Casarez) except for the knickknacks box, that was uncoupled for what it's worth.)

This turned out so cool PJ! You've been trying out so many new hobbies and different art mediums. It makes me want to try and pick up some new skills.
ngl I thought you turned the boat into a duck until you said it was a seagull
paul would’ve loved this

Really cool idea! I might try this with my students! Fun challenge and good exercise of creativity! Nice job, PJ!
it would be so fun if you made a few more of these videos, i really enjoyed it :) your videos feel like a cup of tea in bed on a rainy day :)
i love the way the water looks 💙
Here for the Fuji cameo. Catmeo? Catmeow??
If its any comfort, i love the painting
Your painting remind me of a book I got recommended a few years ago (tho I never got to finish it): Life in the sky by José Eduardo Agualusa. Where the earth flooded and got super hot, so everyone had to start living in these hot air boats in the sky.
Maybe try acrylic paint or even a paint pen I think the added structure would help with ur style!!! Can’t wait to see what u make next😊
Very fun! I think it could be interesting to paint on the glass vs going directly on the painting.
We had that painting in my childhood home over the dining table. I like the water edition
If only Paul could have seen this
I hope this becomes a series !
I love this project!
I like these art experiment videos and seeing you try new stuff
I love the penguin looking seagull, he’s so cute
Always love to see the buoy
an interesting expermint, take an oil painting, and use the pastells on the glass to draw over it it could ad a cool 3D element
This is great. Such a a cool looking landscape. I'd say it's a cool experiment.
Love it so much! Really tells a story. You should consider making a short film, following that buoy on its adventures! 😉
Don’t even worry about the ship, ships are big like BIG so you’re all good
penguin looking seagull throwing some sass with that look
oil paints/pastels are always so finicky, i dont think ive ever worked w it without having at least a baby crisis about it lol,, i rlly like the story of the painting and i think u executed it rlly well especially cuz switching mediums is intimidating as hell ! (o7 paul)
Next time you use a fixative try spraying from farther away, you risk smudging your work when it’s so close!
I need more of these
Best birthday gift thank you pj 💖
this seems so fun!! what a cool idea c:
i like how it turned out, you did a great job!
love the vulnerability
It would be so cute to cut out little shirts with scraps of fabric and glue it on!
This is super incredible!! Oil pastels seem so difficult to me and i hate oil paints so im super impressed by what u managed to achieve ❤❤ thanks for the inspiration and ideas! This seems fun
Also RIP paul hi paulie
You should try paint pens or acrylic on the other one! Something that will go on really opaque. :)
Actually, i really like the new art!
You did very good
I thought you edited the boat to be a big duck and thought it worked well, I didn't see that it was a separate bird until you zoomed in 😂
Rip Paul I love you forevwr
maybe you should look for something that’s a bit more your style? or something that could be transformed to be more in your comfort zone, don’t get me wrong this was great, that’s just a way it might make it more fun for you! if you want to do it again of course, cause I do think it’s a fun challenge
My favourite thing was how his first instinct was to drown them 😂
I enjoyed watching this so much ! Love the outcome :)
Oil pastels are my favorite!! I loved what you did with the water in the painting as a template Idea, are you going to muck up the other painting you bought too?
unironically jealous af of that twilight graphic novel
Loved this so much!
This is the sequel to Ocean Kid
I swear fixing sprays never works how you want them too. They either ruin the piece or give it an unexpected turn.
Oil pastels are my least favorite medium, you did a great job with them! And i will never not love vulnerable art times
Only 6 minutes in but have already said out loud “whoa that looks amazing”
The walking away physically bit is too real, im working on this massive landscape painting atm and Im kinda free forming and learning as I'm going, but because of the size of the canvas i have to move away from it to realise what I'm painting looks far better than how it looks when Im close up

rip paul you would've loved pj's oil pastel picture
It's fun. I would say, don't take it too seriously. It can be good as something that is just kinda supposed to make you smile not be technically perfect.
I love the little seagull! But I'm so sad about Paul...
THE BUOY!
Love it!❤
feel like shit just want paul back :'(

Saying you have more control with oil pastels than oil paints is so unhinged to me 🤣
If you haven't already.....I'd love to see you make slime
Yeahhhhhh I’ve always wanted to do this ohmygoodness so coolllllll
i would love to see you try making a comic strip
This was so cool!! :)
PJ..you want to make short film so bad....make short film.....🌀🌀🌀😵💫
