I'm with you. Green is a great album but it is their turn towards mainstream success. Similarly, Out of Time is great too but it is when they became international superstars and for me when I stopped paying attention to their new material.
They were a concert favorite for me. High energy and they performed live the same crystal clear way they recorded. Then "Shiny Happy People" happened...
@@johnarche6438 Shiny Happy, was REM's way of giving the record company what they had asked for. "Does it have to always be so dark? Can't you guys do a happy song?" REM "Ok a**holes here is your happy song"
I lived in Athens, Georgia in 1981/1982 and used to go to this small venue called Tyrone's to see REM. Me, my friends and about 15 other people (very small venue). They were new, raw and incredible, even in the beginning.
Kathy I remember those days! REM came to our little venue "Bogarts" in Clifton, OH a few times. Just a few hundred people could fit in the place. Michael had the curly hair and glasses. They were raw and extraordinary!
I remember Tyrone's. Tyrone's OC was where all the cool Athens bands played. First time I saw them was at Tyrone's in May of 1980. They opened for the Brains. It was their third gig ever... R.E.M. was pretty popular right from the get go . They would draw bigger crowds than the other Athens bands. I was at this show too: ua-cam.com/video/w24VhMok-EE/v-deo.html
The thing that strikes me about many of these early songs is how driving the tempo is. For all the inscrutability of the lyrics, the brisk pace keeps it on the side of pop, and away from the pitfalls of art-rock self-indulgence. There are so many great songs from their last five albums, but without Berry as their timekeeper, the tempos were often far too sluggish.
He also wrote some of their biggest songs! Bill Berry wrote “Everybody Hurts”, “Man on The Moon”, “Driver 8” and many others (though they split songwriting credits evenly in the name of band harmony)
Great point! I'm here after Stipe's Podcast with Rick Rubin in which he talks how fast the songs were and then he developed his singing style to counter the speed: ua-cam.com/video/v1ULhabUj18/v-deo.html&ab_channel=BrokenRecordPodcast
This album means so much to me. I remember I first saw them playing on the steps of the UCLA student union building, and they were unknown. So one of them asked me to buy their record, Murmur, and I did.
Murmur is by far my favorite REM album. I always knew about their hits from Document and on but never listened to the first album till I was 26. This album helped me get over the dissolution of my first real relationship of 6 years. It will always have a special place in my heart.
There will always be homeless, poor, and the down trodden. It is up to all of that have the means to help them...I have been all over the world and it is the same in every corner...
I saw them on this college tour. I heard Michael Stipe sing a capella song that was like nothing I've ever hear before or since. The 80's was one of the greatest eras in history.
I love this song, I love this great album and I love so much Michael Stipe as a human being. What he did to help Vic Chesnutt is wonderful. Such a beautiful man!
Undoboudted the greatest video I have ever saw. It makes me cry everytime I see it. I'm from a small town and i couldn't imagine having to sleep in a box, or beg for food. And I think I've got it back because i'm addicted to pills. These people couldn't get meds to save their life. God Bless......Chad W.
+Jonathan Eichin I like REM because they always stayed sounding like REM but nothing is as good as Murmur. It's about hunger, and asks how long we will wait to do something for those in need. The video contrasts homeless people with the expense of military ships-we always have money for war, but never for those in need. Instead, the poor only get empty prayers.
Peter Buck and Johnny Marr were doing great things in the 80s with a guitar in hand
Zac Spearman alternative/indie rock wouldn't be at all the same and as good without The Smiths and REM ;)
I was just thinking tonight about how analogous the Smiths were to REM. Good time to come up.

The opening guitar is one of the most beautifully melodic & gripping in all of rock & roll.
Another gem. When will people realise that this band was probably the best in the world. Look at their back catalogue. It's astonishing.
