INFO:
Herman Poole Blount later known as Sun Ra was an american jazz composer, piano, synth player and overall bad shit crazy person. In addition to being a brilliant jazz player he was a philosopher, poet, author, futurist, black rights activist, self proclaimed angel and extraterrestrial being. About those last points, yes it’s true, the man literally thought he came from Saturn. Throughout his life he garnered a cult following, but never managed to break into mainstream music culture. Forever living on as a musician’s musician. Inspiring countless other artists and bands like Sonic Youth, Flying Lotus and MF Doom. In this video we'll talk about the life and times of Sun Ra. This is the message beyond the music.

What band or artist should be next? Comment below 🤘🎸
Moondog
Porcupine tree
You should do Emerson Lake and Palmer
Acid Bath please, because its finally in Spotify
best B-day gift ever :D
also, maybe Morbid Angel or Alice in Chains.
Tame Impala
Calling Sun Ra "Batsh#t Crazy" is not right. He had a calling to do things differently and saw that vision through. Most would have given up.
Damn batshit sharp?
This comment seems completely inappropriate. Do you know anything about Sun Ra? Why would you even think he is ‘crazy’? to begin with? I would remove your comment.
@@44okoo62 Bro did you even watch the video?
@@thatbassguy9502 i dont even think he read the comment 💀
TOTALLY AGREED!
He didn’t think he came from Saturn, he came from Saturn.
he was speaking in riddles and codes he was a freemason, so was duke ellington, i know what he was talkin about tho
magicians love to stare from beneath the murky waters
I thought there WAS a lil town called Saturn where he lived?
🪐
I guess one man’s Batshit Crazy is another’s groundbreaking, brilliant, visionary artist.
Ra didn’t believe he was from Saturn… He WAS from Saturn and he was sent with an almost a singular mission, a mission which he spent his life carrying out at the expense of everything else. He did everything he could to get the music out of himself and his Arkestra and into human ears.
The man was so brilliant and so far ahead of everything else, we’re still not caught up.
I worked with some of his musician's...
He was beyond his time.....
RIP master teacher 🎹🎹🎹
Who did you work with?
@@bradm.3775 I worked and used to manage violinist Michael White!
@@bradm.3775 and pharoah sanders 🎷
I saw the Arkestra perform under the direction of Marshall Allen on tour last year. They seemed to have quite a great time on stage, and I know the audience certainly did. Despite Ra's absence, they're still quite a spectacle and compelling performers.
Woah! Somebody finally talks about Sun Ra! Back in the summer after my 7th grade year, I started making music, and wanted to get into experimental stuff. I discovered Sun Ra, and have loved him ever since. I’m so glad someone is finally making a video about him😃
I’m thinking im done with stupid youtube altogether. Has no one ever read a book or even bothered to buy his music???
@@44okoo62 of course people buy his music, but his music is more obscure and experimental. These days, people don’t really read books as often. And who would go and buy a book about a musician they’ve never even heard of before? I think it’s cool seeing these types of videos on UA-cam. It’ll get lots more kids into cool artists like Sun Ra. Kids aren’t just going to go buy Sun Ra records and buy books about him if they’ve never even heard of him before. I don’t know why you have such a problem with these types of videos. They do nothing but good for the music community.
Dope, I've been wondering about his story. The research and presentation is much appreciated 👍
Rush Sandifer Cool. He's got a really interesting story. I could go on for hours. Thanks for watching.
Nicely done! Sun Ra has such a large diverse body of work on such a long timeline if it’s hard to encapsulate for people quickly. I’ve already shared your video with some friends. Thanks for putting this together! 🪐✨🎥💕✨🤘🏽
Sun Ra is an inspiration for all of us
My maternal Grandmother and her side of the family's burial plot is in the same cemetery in Birmingham as Sun Ra's. Whenever I visit my Grandmother's grave, I try to visit Sun Ra's, too.
Classic track: 1982's "Nuclear War"
love your type of educational videos. I love even more someone who recognizes Sun Ra's art and philosophy as absurd as it can be. I love to showing people Sun Ra
Since you mentioned them, can you do a video on either Sonic Youth or MF DOOM.
MF DOOM please
KamenSentaiMetalHero 2000 Ooh i would love to do one on Doom 😊
Not rap pls, Sonic Youth is better
@@Andrei4224 to each his own their both legends in the own right but doom has had a crazy life would be an interesting story
Doom just died 😭.
"Don't be a girt, buy a shirt." Best way to convince me to buy merch.
Rusty Buckets Haha
if you wanna be a mensch then buy this wrench.... that's a good one too, but i'm not selling a wrench , how about a Bench?
"He claimed to be from Saturn, but he was originally from Birmingham, Alabama... bassist Juni Booth has a story about when Birmingham, which eventually became proud of its native, presented Sun Ra with the key to the city. During the ceremony, Sun Ra told him, 'I hate this fuckin’ town, that’s why I always told people I was from Saturn.'"
I guess if you look around you and see poverty, lynchings, segregation and so on, why would you want to be from Earth?
an anecdote shared by a musician friend, said to be taken from the ESP site but I couldn't find it.
sun ra is one of my favorite jazz artists. thanks for the synopsis.
Springtime Again is my favorite Sun Ra song!
When I found that song I couldn't get enough of it. Months later, I would still play it at least once a week.
Awesome song.. Reminds me of A Little Green Rosetta by Frank Zappa for some reason.
saw him twice late 80s
Sightreading music is not that big of a deal. At age 11, sure, its very impressive, but in an academic setting it's very common. I was thought trombone at age 11, and you start working on sightreading right away. You get tested on it all the time. To do it perfectly on piano with out any perp time is a feat, but you are sort of burying the lead here! He had perfect pitch!
That's like saying "at age 11, he was reading at the level of a 20 year old. Oh, also he could speak 12 different languages at 4 years old and has the entire Encyclopedia Britannica memorized. And you heard me about the reading at an adult level right?"
He "literally" thought he was from Saturn? Maybe he did. He said it enough. But he also talked a lot about myth. He spoke as though he was an ambassador to humanity leading people into the new world. A new world based on myth. So was this all part of his theatrical aesthetic or did he really believe it? I don't know.
great video again! loving the art
Interesting video. I had honestly never heard of Sun Ra before. I like his creativity
I saw the Sun Ra collective play with Yo La Tengo in San Francisco!!
i love the animation that goes with this great video!!!
Never heard about this guy but I'm definitely giving him a listen now
would deeply love a video about the smiths! your channel is super intriguing and explaining info about the smiths would be amazing.
This guy seems to be A crazy renaissance man
Since watching this one video my recommendations have been INSANE
Thank you for this
Keep rockin it Brotha!
I liked your video and am close to embarking on a PhD on this topic. Wish I could talk with you more on this topic. And it's called an interdisciplinary PhD but I wonder if I should think of it as an 'interplanetary PhD.' Wow, I might just be on to something with that idea. This is a great topic. Thanks for your video here.
Respect! From Saturn✨
Sleeping Beauty is the desert island album of all desert island albums

@@LieLikesMusic madlib is obsessed with sun ra , once heard egon say it in an interview
Darn... I thought this was gonna be an Ash-Ra Tempel episode 😂
So yeah please do an Ash-Ra Tempel video. 🤞
Could someone please tell me what the tune at 6:31 is?
Whoa man you really ARE expanding your fuckin' purview! Absolutely BASED
Heyyy I just discovered your channel and I loved your videos so I subscribed. One thing I’d like to say though is that I would like to see your take on some female artists as well, if you’re open for suggestions on that front.
@LieLikesMusic Thanks for mentioning Alton Abraham
No problem ;) Thanks for watching
Could you do something on Two Door Cinema Club?

I, too, read the wikipedia page.
You should talk about Chris Cornell!
Hey man. Lately I watched Miami Vice and heard a cool Todd Rundgren song. "Tiny Demons". 1980s, obviously. If you haven't heard it already, tell me whatcha think! ;) It's played while one of the characters is getting high.
damn
do a video on daft punk next
da Gus That would be dope. I'll have to do that sometime soon.
can u make a video on Swans?
Yes, Swans, great👏🏻
I want him to make a video about Kino
Simon Jadinge Not a huge Swans fan tbh. I haven't heard much of their music either though. Maybe
Are you still selling t-shirts? Etsy link doesn't work anymore.
Can you do an understanding Liam Gallagher
notification gang! helloo
Archy E Hey thanks for being early
I take his remarks about himself at face value.
great video, love sun ra. But whats with these 3 random images that repeat throughout the whole video? why dont you show actual images or actual illustrations of what your talking about in the video? not just these 3 repeating photos. just comes across lazy
I mean i understand your point, and i don't know the answer. But copyright laws are a bitch. Grabbing an image from google images to use in the video without buying the rights would be a copyright violation, and he could get sued for it. That sounds drastic, but maybe he's just trying to make a sound professional video on a budget?
*angry homeless warlock screams*
Great video but please don’t repeat the same pictures over and over, it makes the video tedious to watch and distracts the viewer from what you are saying.
Edit: only for fart brains...
exactly what i was about to comment, wish the illustrations were at least colorful. sun ra's album covers were always bright and colorful it would have went along great together.
Pablo I had a ton of production issues this time around. I thought it would be better to post something now rather than 2 months from now. Next one will be a lot better.
@@DIYTFY okay dude
lol Jane from Daria!
Atlantis is the best
Wids It's very lo-fi and simplistic compared to his other albums. I only listened to it once and i'm totally confused about what to think of it honestly.
@@LieLikesMusic Its people from the future making music with cavemen from the past
Bro just reading wiki word for word
I'm sorry but is this a reading from wikipedia??
Does it sound like it?
Video on GG Allin?
god yes he was an enigma lol
Is that Muzak/Blues by Sun Ra?? I don´t think so!! 😡
explaining people a musician, a musical world, without original (SUN RA) music, is just stupid!
Copyright, he can't use one of his songs without the vid getting taken down
phish
You must understand individuality that pursue individualistic. You should do more research because I live in Philadelphia in Germantown I met someone clockwork Germantown what happened to him have happened to many adult tees by aliens so believe it or not you should see where you’re coming from and where are you from. You should really understand what are you saying space is the place. Much more larger than advance eternity are you a musician my name is Montana King any comments let me know I can give you insight.?
Ur narrative starts way off!!! But that’s ok cuz the innerstand is for those that seek & are of space!
*His experience of abduction was when he was a small child not during college.

i really don't like that American English slang... The way how they spell the letter 'R' in some states is an offense for my ears.. I'm angry now because I m a sun ra fan but can't watch this now due to the terrible spelling
I'm from Norway btw. Too bad you can't tolerate my accent.
@@LieLikesMusic all good.. Forgot to add a smiley at the end... Never forget...humans are the biggest joke in Universe... Sun ra believed in that aswell
Man, sorry, but putting seven images in loop is a crappy video. It gets too much boring very quickly
The minute this goofy nerd calld Sunny Ra batshit crazy i clicked um off..😴
Wow calling a musical and artistic visionary "bats hit crazy" in the first 30 seconds.. Fool.
Background music sucks and doesn't fit. Animations also suck. And seems like you're just reading from the Wikipedia page.
All your knowledge is based on somebodys else knowledge therefore you are just programmed to sound like someone else ...your Voice sounds Young ..so you Never met sun Ra but you claim that you all know this about sun ra ...go home !!!
I wanna see you talk about sun ra. People always got to be assholes. Go home.
