@@LieLikesMusic yep, one of their tunes was on Breaking Bad. Their latest album, 'Mettavoltion' wound up winning the Grammy for best Contemporary instrumental album. When I make recommendations, I make sure they are not time wasters. I would love you to do a video on them. Have a good day. Todd.
John Dwyer used to listen to metal, he used to like metal. Sure, he liked The Misfits and Black Flag and other hardcore bands, but... to say that metal wasn't cool is disingenuous. I know, I was there. We were listening to Metallica, Flotsam and Jetsam, Voivod, Metal Church.... Danzig (where do you think he got the haircut?). I introduced him to The Can, so you got that right...he was and is a big fan. But he also listened to a lot of Pink Floyd and the early Floyd sound is instantly recognizable in a lot of his songs, especially Syd Barrett era Floyd. An influence many probably don't know about is Thin White Rope, they were in heavy rotation in those late 80's, early 90's days; along with a great deal of Skinny Puppy. John has had a lot of influences, and if you listen... you can hear them. Tell me if you can hear Blue Oyster Cult? :)
Are you the individual responsible for the smoking sentinel incense collab w/ Dwyer? If so, I was fortunate enough to secure a box, wonderful stuff! 😌 Typing of metal, I'll be seeing Mercyful Fate and Kreator tomorrow evening. Later in the week, Osees--always such a pleasure. I definitely hear the Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd influence, which I do admire. His solo material is great too, Madcap Laughs stays in rotation. Also, thanks for introducing John to Can. 😄
Thanks for doing a video on these guys. I recently got into both Thee Oh Sees and King Gizzard and as of this video release I have a combined 25 albums by them. As for my favorite by Thee Oh Sees I think it would be "Face Stabber". It's the first album I heard by them AND I like theirlo ger jams.
Its a little introduction. Doesn't do the giant rabbit whole justice that is thee oh sees though. They are a hit or miss kind of band. If you have to ask why they're great you will never understand.
Dude you kinda messed up with that part 'bout Gizz Everybody knows that they took a lot from Osees, especially in their early days I fuckin love both bands btw
So who commits the notes to the staff? Many modern musicians don't take the time or simply don't know how to write their compositions onto sheet music in the language of music theory. So who or what puts the notes of those riffs to the musical staff? Is it a person or is it software? If so, what software program is it?
Crazy how little research went into this video. Theyve been experimenting with two drummers for over a decade now. Also the tunings they use are much much weirder than he gives them credit for (almost none are drop tunings) and if you watch live videos you'll see hes pretty much completely wrong, the dream especially has some very prominent drone strings he's overlooked. Also no mention at all of the folk era? Even tho he showed multiple clips from it
@@LieLikesMusic Thanks for asking! A lot were already in the comments, but here's some love to some new bands to me: Opus Orange, Automatic, Parquet Courts, just to aname a few. Keep rockin' man, great job.
HOLY SHIT YOU DID ONE OF MY FAVOURITE BANDS!!! Are you digging the Live At The Chapel SF 10/02 RSD release?! I am! Coachwhips' Bangers Vs. Fuckers LP was my second favourite LP of 2004 too, they made The White Stripes sound like The Carpenters (hey don't get me wrong, I love The Carpenters!) ! And I'm crazy for Damaged Bug's Bunker Funk album, it's like a scuzz-punk version of a Can record, glad you mentioned the masters of kosmiche musik (I don't say "krautrock" 'cause it was coined by British journalists and seems jingoistic at best and racist at the worst--that's just my opinion don't all pile on--I know lots of other people who feel that way too)! I really dig the OCS psych-folk stuff, and I've been caning the hell out of Brigid Dawson And The Mother's Network Ballet Of Apes LP. It's like an alternate-universe torch-song avant-jazz record and is just lovely. Another big influence on JPD was the UK's Medway Garage Scene--look up all those Billy Childish garage/psychobilly/punk rock bands like Thee Headcoats, Thee Milkshakes, Thee Mighty Caesars etc. etc. Most fans agree that's where he got the idea of usin the "Thee" prefix which coincides with the bands most popular releases and Dwyer is/was big into the UK independent punk/post-punk scene. Thanks for the video, nice chops too, man!
Hehe you're definitely way more knowledgable in their discography and facts than me. I guess that's what happens when your band becomes your favorite band. You just get obsessed with checking out all the side projects and little known facts. Kosmiche musik? That's interesting that you choose to use that label. But yea i guess that's the german and original way of labeling krautrock. And i'm yet to check out more of their folky stuff. I did check out their DVD Hounds of Foggy Notion. There's some bangers on there that i want to listen more to. Thanks for watching and for sharing man.
@@LieLikesMusic Thanks for the reply, Lie! Tbh I've only *really* been into Osees since the sub announced Castle Face were putting out The Fall Live In St. Helens 1981 LP. So that was probably just under a year ago. So I'm checking out the sub, and I keep thinking: "John Dwyer, John Dwyer, where do I know that name from?!!?" I searched Discogs and, as mentioned, realised he'd been behind my second-favourite LP of 2004, Bangers Vs. Fuckers, and this was like the HEIGHT of the "garage rock/blues-rock" revival with all those one-hit wonders and then the longer-lasting bands whose music evolved; like White Stripes, Black Keys, The Strokes etc. And that little CD-R was like 18 minutes long, just fast, scuzzed-out garage punk (no bass, just guitar, drums and a little keyboard and JPD shouting "YEAH!!" and "OH BABY!!!" and variations thereof). Tl;dr--Bangers Vs. Fuckers is a PROPER FACE-MELTER. Anyway I started asking for recs (everyone on their sub is lovely), started buying the records and checking out live performances on YT and I was hooked! I have The Hounds Of Foggy Notion LP, I'd really like to check out the DVD. That's a great record. But yeah, they've released so many bangers, JPD is a machine, and I feel like most of my fave bands have used a double drum line-up at some point so that always gets props from me! That OCS record, Memory Of A Cut Off Head, even has cello, viola and "proper" string/brass arrangements, really beautiful vocals from Brigid...it feels like a late summer afternoon lazing in bed with your girlfriend or boyfriend, and that special quality of light is catching the dust motes hanging in the air...that's the vibe I get off of that LP! Sorry for the blogpost, just wanna say quickly that the reason I don't use the term "Krautrock" anymore (apart from what I listed before) is 'cause I'm British myself...and it's not, fucking, I dunno, 1943 anymore!!! LOve him or hate him Stuart Maconie (Brit DJ/broadcaster/writer/musicologist who had a GREAT show on BBC6 Music playing HYPER obscure music, like old Argentine psych or Polynesian prog-rock; it was SO good) bought up the problematic nature of the term as far back as like 15 years ago, being a big big fan of the genre himself...and I know for a fact that some of the bands called "Krautrock" HATED the term vociferously! Anyhow blogpost over, sorry! Thanks again for the reply, love your content and your playing, you nailed the Oh Sees tunes mate :) Have to give Mutilator, Floating Coffin and Orc a listen today! hopefully someone can make a good one
My favorite musician of all time:)
I stopped the video when he mentioned how their sound is similar to King Gizzard. King Gizzard is similar to Oh Sees. That is like saying the Beatles sound a lot like the Monkeys.
I think most osees stuff is in D standard (apart from maybe smote reverser) with the low string dropped occasionally for songs, this'd make the dream much easier to play than how you did it since you can just move the major chord shape on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th strings about instead of having to change shape
Slow and steady for Dwyer is at least an album per year for over two decades and still running. 😂
Bro, te lo diré en castellano. Thee Oh Sees inspiró a Stu y al mundo de King Gizz.
Thanks for this video, man! Been getting into them, and dude, what an unusual group! Their sound is so unique. Aggressive and fun at the same time, and the first time I heard the vocals I wasnt expecting that tone. Pretty damn cool.
Love it. They have had two drummers for like 10 years, though.
Cool Death of Island Raiders blew my mind, it was like the soundtrack to a fever dream. Imagine my delight when I found out all the rest of their massive catalogue was just as good.
I would absolutely die upon seeing “Understanding Brenden Small”
12,000 scrobbles in Last.Fm - yeah, I think I quite understand OCS/The OhSees/Thee Oh Sees/Oh sees/Osees
i hav around 20k,i think i need a bit more to be sure
Since the dawn of time, king gizzard and the lizard have be trekking through a harsh wasteland (filled with sentient computers, vultures with human remains attached to they're decrepit bodies, and melting wax the traps unwary travelers in a shell of its own self) just to find the last component to create John Dwyer.
John Dwyer helped in the creation of KG actually
OH MY GOD MY FAVORITE BAND ITS FINALLY HERE AHHHHHH
If you think the albums are good, check out the live performances.. the album songs are basically templates for improvisation and they are almost always better live.
Dwyer is a right madman. The O sees have always been great, but they've never been better than at the present moment
oh sees, king gizz, slift. the holy trinity
Dont sleep on Ty segall ;)
Please do multiple Steely Dan videos
Nice volta shirt dawg. And great vid
I had to fuckimg look up the day they form cause I couldn't understand him, I'm glad I did
i love you now, probably the best live band i seen (several times) this was one of the bands that kickstarted my musical cravings back in the late 2000's
When im pissed off and having a bad day i like to cut the amp on and boost all the gain settings and blast some coachwhips
Oh you gotta do a video on Sheena Ringo sometime! She us a excelent musician with a great artistic vision! P.s. not sure if the spotify account shown in the video is yours os from the editor ahahaha :P
no John Dwayer = no King Gizzard
Lie Bro, Smote Reverser and Henchlock have to be the best OC albums haha, I like all their stuff, but them two albums are real gems.
Protean threat is really good too. But I consider those two to be there opuses
Nice epiphone. I got the epiphone les Paul special II and I love it.
Recently started to get into Krautrock actually from this video because of how you mentioned Dwyer’s love for German rock. One duo in particular I’m obsessed with right now is Klaus Johann Grobe. Please check them out, it’s the perfect blend of electronic, psychedelic, experimental, and funk. Can’t emphasize this enough, they blew my mind.
Check out Baby Grandmothers and Guru Guru if you haven't heard them already.
Super jealous of that Mars Volta shirt lol
@lielikesmusic, speaking of "Holy Wars", have you heard the Rodrigo y Gabriela cover version of that? Check that out!
Never heard of it no. Thanks for recommending this, i'll tune in :)
@@LieLikesMusic you know I'm always trying to stir you into the right direction with class A musicians that will make you just a better guitar player. Rodrigo y Gabriela will blow your mind if you aren't too familiar with them. Gabriela, hands down, is one of the best top 5 female guitar players for the innovative style she has created. Might not be a bad idea to cover them in one of your videos. Have a good day my friend!
@@forthedoggiesguitars2277 I'm listening to them now. I think i've heard their song Tamacun somewhere before. Maybe on Breaking Bad or Better Call Saul. The Holy Wars cover also sounds sick. I love the acoustic style and the muted/percussive style of playing. I appreciate your input :) Have a great day man.
@@LieLikesMusic yep, one of their tunes was on Breaking Bad. Their latest album, 'Mettavoltion' wound up winning the Grammy for best Contemporary instrumental album. If you check out their cover of 'Echoes' by Pink Floyd, you can see why they won. It's cool you took the time to check them; it's worth it. When I make recommendations, I make sure they are not time wasters. I would love you to do a video on them. Have a good day. Todd.
a little thanks from france
The shortlived pink and brown was amazing. Lightning Bolt inspired them!
Typing of metal, I'll be seeing Mercyful Fate and Kreator tomorrow evening. Later in the week, Osees--always such a pleasure. I definitely hear the Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd influence, which I do admire. His solo material is great too, Madcap Laughs stays in rotation. Also, thanks for introducing John to Can. 😄
@@celestialgutter Yes, I did collaborate with John on Smoking Sentinel! Very glad you enjoyed it!
Do Lightning Bolt, please!
John dwyer is a legend
Thanks for doing a video on these guys. I recently got into both Thee Oh Sees and King Gizzard and as of this video release I have a combined 25 albums by them. As for my favorite by Thee Oh Sees I think it would be "Face Stabber". It's the first album I heard by them AND I like theirlo ger jams.
Do Placebo
Best band currently
You do realize Oh Sees were a big Gizz influence, right?
After 100 comments of people telling me this… maybe? 😅
10:24 Dippety deep dap dop! A video about Be-bop and scatting next?
Be-bop is a little too far away from what i'm already doing. Thanks for the idea though hehe. Be-bop guitar perhaps
Its a little introduction. Doesn't do the giant rabbit whole justice that is thee oh sees though. They are a hit or miss kind of band. If you have to ask why they're great you will never understand.
Dude you kinda messed up with that part 'bout Gizz
Everybody knows that they took a lot from Osees, especially in their early days
I fuckin love both bands btw
pretty sure JPD just uses D standard tuning always.
can you make an Understanding on Team Sleep?
the fact you're wearing a mars volta shirt brings up a question I've had, how does Dwyer feel about Volta? hell and vice versa?
Hmm good question. He’s got a broad taste in music from what i know. So i bet he’s listened to them.
@@LieLikesMusic i'm almost positive he would have had to give them a good day in court
So who commits the notes to the staff? Many modern musicians don't take the time or simply don't know how to write their compositions onto sheet music in the language of music theory. So who or what puts the notes of those riffs to the musical staff? Is it a person or is it software? If so, what software program is it?
A person with a software, probably Sybelius
Got the absolute shit kicked out of me at an Oh Sees show. It was epic.
I had 3 copies of Orc and repuctantly traded one when I felt that was maybe being a hair excessive.
Nice video btw, thank you.
UNDERSTANDING AMERIC ANFOOTBALL
They’re great! At least the first album
Even tho he showed multiple clips from it
You should do a video on ASIWYFA. They hella underrated
YESSS OSEES POGGERS
What a great video!
Thanks. Glad you dig it. Are there any other bands you’d like me to cover.
Cheers man!
John IS Rock N Roll
....watching them play on pool tables for a stage... thats how I understood them
Speaking of Holy Wars, video on Megadeth?
dude osees rips but you wanna know what else fuckin rips?
GODDAMN GOLDEN SUN MY GUY
I've been waiting for this one lol
Cool. Hope you dig it.
YESSSS
Finally!!!!!!!!
which song is at 3:00
Thumb buster
Nice video! But bro... you have broken pixel on your camera and you just gave me a heart attack cuz i'm watching that on my new laptop i just bought
Hands down the best band other than the Beatles
They're definitely original. Great live band too from what i see and hear
@@LieLikesMusic yeah man have u heard the live version of encrypted bounce on kexp
@@harrygrubb1656 No not yet. But the recent Levitation sessions are awesome.
This made me laugh my ass off... but then then I thought, shit... maybe he's right! 🤔
Please do one on Opeth!
Now I'm figuring out the effect of my obsessive music playlist hording. It starts with me finding this video. "Osees" I thought sounds so Greek mythology, I'm interested. Alright, cool story good music, let's play their spotify populars. Ooh I like this one, glad I checked them ou... wait, I know this song. It's in my playlist. I've know about this band for 2 year already.
That's what you get if you just drop things in a playlist and don't investigate further. Great video. Lie!
Haha. I find myself in that situation so often. People ask if i’ve heard of this or that band. And then i say: “no”. And then they put on the music and i realize i’ve heard their music here and there for years. Average week of a music nerd i guess 😅
Mark Linkous, please 😭
Fuck yeah 🔥
LETS GOOOO
