- This is the hymn, 'Blessèd City, heavenly Salem', originally in Latin (c. 7th century), translated by J.M. Neale (1818-66) and set to the hymn tune REGENT SQUARE, composed by Henry Smart (1813-79). This hymn tune is commonly set to the hymn, 'Angels From the Realms of Glory'.
It was sung at the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey on Monday 13th March 2017.
Sung by the Choir of Westminster Abbey. The hymn was arranged by James O'Donnell, the Director of Music at the Abbey.
Disclaimer: I do not own the (contents of the) video, I merely put lyrics over the top.
Marvelous indeed! May her Majesty continue to rest in Peace.
The final verse of these hymns are just spectacular - organ (commanding), brass, vocal range. I would love to be there during such hymns to first hear, then sing. Wow!
Such beautiful hymns it makes want to go back home. God Brings us back to a place where we can remember. Thanks be to God Almighty
These type videos make me miss Sunday gathering and worship.
I agree with you. Hopefully they’ll resume soon.
@@Sunny-sy2xl absolutely.🙏🙏
I concur.
Hopefully you all are able to join your church families again now. God bless you.❤️
Yes I also miss the majesty of high church worship and the hyms
I will visit this Westminster Abbey church someday. What a glorious hymn!
I believe this was The Duke of Edinburgh’s final procession. A very fitting descant.
I LOVW ALL THESE CEREMONIES
RIP YOUR MAJESTY
Excellent descant at the end of the hymn.
"Westminster Abbey choir is one of the best Christian Choir in the world." ~Me
Love from South East Asia ❤
Lord Of Beauty, Thine The Splendor is also set to this tune.
It flashes my mind back to these glorious years in the Choir .
I love singing .
Beautiful singing using this hymn tune (Regent Square) with descant and Amen ! Greetings from N.H.
Glad our church now meets every Lord's day. We are blessed 🙌
This tune "life a board celestial Salem", then sum it up with a descant at the last verse!!! Wonderful.
Regent Square
@@backedupwithtruth7525 Beautifully played in B-flat.
I "converted" in 1979, but still miss the cadences and liturgy of the CofE. The Queen and Philip slipstream in and make it look so easy - incredible at their age!
Dear, may one inquire to what you converted?
@@christianfrommuslim Roman Catholic - Western Tradition. Hymnology nowhere near as good!

The organ of Westminster Abbey possess a commanding personality in terms of its rich tones. The acoustics of the cathedral itself further enhances the organ's tonal qualities and diversity. Definitely, there is something unique about this organ (though I'm not sure what it is) judging by its fullness of sound. The organ must be immensely proud to be in Her Majesty's service.
Do the English people always sing so powerfull And srong.
@@elainestevens8402 The melody of any song is defined by the personality of the mood. If the mood is enthusiastic, the singing is (as you mentioned) powerful and strong. If the mood is melancholic, the singing is pensive. It depends on what the song/hymn is trying to convey.
To the service of the king of kings, Jesus Christ
@Banshan Lyngdoh Westminster Abbey isn't a cathedral. It is an Abbey church in possession of the Sovereign.
@@elainestevens8402 Yes.
A great and magnificent hymn, beautifully rendered.

Just like "Angels from the realms of glory."
Hello from N.H.
1 Blessèd city, heavenly Salem,
vision dear of peace and love,
who of living stones art builded
in the height of heaven above,
and with angel hosts encircled,
as a bride dost earthward move!2 From celestial realms descending,
bridal glory round thee shed,
meet for him whose love espoused thee,
to thy Lord shalt thou be led;
all thy streets and all thy bulwarks
of pure gold are fashioned.3 Bright thy gates of pearl are shining,
they are open evermore;
and by virtue of his merits
thither faithful souls do soar,
who for Christ's dear name in this world
pain and tribulation bore.4 Many a blow and biting sculpture
polished well those stones elect,
in their places now compacted
by the heavenly Architect,
who therewith hath willed for ever
that his palace should be decked.5 Christ is made the sure foundation,
Christ the Head and comer-stone,
chosen of the Lord, and precious,
binding all the church in one,
Holy Sion's help for ever,
and her confidence alone.6 All that dedicated city,
dearly loved of God on high,
in exultant jubilation
pours perpetual melody,
God the One in Three adoring
in glad hymns eternally.7 To this temple, where we call thee,
come, O Lord of Hosts, to-day;
with thy wonted loving-kindness
hear thy servants as they pray,
and thy fullest benediction
shed within its walls alway.8 Here vouchsafe to all thy servants
what they ask of thee to gain,
what they gain from thee for ever
with the blessed to retain,
and hereafter in thy glory
evermore with thee to reign.Doxology:
Laud and honour to the Father,
laud and honour to the Son,
laud and honour to the Spirit,
ever Three, and ever One,
consubstantial, co-eternal,
while unending ages run.
Thank you and hello from N.H.
God bless you for writing all the stanzas. Very inspiring
what wonderful words! Thank God for the truth in them. I love the line "all that dedicated city, DEARLY LOVED by GOD on High" what a comforting and encouraging thought!!
Love this type of gospel song
Absolutely Magnificent!
Wonderful.
Regent Square is a very popular hymn tune sung to several different hymns
Indeed, here in the USA it’s often sung to Angels from the Realms of Glory at Christmastime.
@@DCLayclerk absolutely 💯
Fabulous - inspirational.
This is actually the tune REGENT SQUARE, popular with both "God of grace and God of glory" and "Angels from the realms of glory."
Yes. Angels from the realms of glory is the way I sang it.
Love that descant!
Yes, it get everyone's attention !
Wow this was beautiful. I’m not familiar with this one. I know the tune but as Angels From the Realms of Glory, a Christmas hymn.
Amen

Beatiful hymn. Thank you for posting. Is that the Queen's scepter held by the woman just ahead of the Queen in procession? I've never noticed before. Thank you.
That is the Royal Commonwealth Mace that was gifted to the sovereign by the countries of the Commonwealth. It's a beautiful object and more information on it can be found by Google search.
Qual é o nome dessa Igreja.Amo esses hinos.
Igreja Anglicana ou Igreja da Inglaterra.
tune: regent Square!
Oh gosh, such beautiful music. However, I must say that the Queen was required to do a lot of walking at her age.
Westminster Abbey (or the Collegiate Church of St Peter, Westminster to give it its correct title) is a "Royal Peculiar" under the jurisdiction of a Dean and Chapter, subject only to the Sovereign and not to any archbishop or bishop. In other words, the King or Queen calls the shots, not some lowly archbishop. 🙂
Does anyone know the name of the piece the organist was playing at the end of the hymn??
@ Bolligelo: The organist was improvising at the end of the hymn, a skill that is required for organist of this caliber in Anglican liturgies. He was merely improving in the style of the hymn and in the exact same key (B Flat Major I think). It wasn't a composed piece even though he improvises so splendidly that it sounded like a composed piece. Hope this helps.
The Queen had not yet reached the end of her procession so music must be added to fill....I suppose.
soor can,t play
I've noticed from all of these videos just how low church they are in the C of E. No incense, no bowing to the processional cross from anyone. No genuflecting. (They might as well be southern baptists by their behaviour!) Do they even bless themselves when the Trinity is spoken? I had no idea they were so low church, including the Royal Family (of all people!). I mean, the Queen is the head of the Church along with the Archbishop of Canterbury. What makes the liturgy feel higher is the music, with superb organ playing, the glorious descants and the state trumpeters. Another odd thing is that some of the women curtsy to the Queen and the men nod or bow their head briefly to the Queen in procession, yet the same people do not bow to the processional cross. It's as if they have more respect and reverence for the Queen than they do the cross and The Holy Trinity. We were taught in Anglican Confirmation Class that one bows to the processional crosses and at other times in the liturgy. I see none of that here.
The Queen is famously low church.
@@someonespadre Not low. Broad.
@@patriciayeiser6405 I grew up in an Episcopal Church in Bakersfield, Kern County, California. My Father would say we were similar but not exactly High Church. Holy Communion 1st 3rd and 5th, Morning Prayer 2nd and 4th. Genuflect at the altar, bow when the cross goes by, cross yourself Anglican style, hymns, but no incense or sung services. Dad would say High Church is mainly east coast. Churches out here now are higher in some ways and lower in some ways (incense and sung services are more common mainly on holy days).
@@someonespadre incense is common in the Catholic Church.I have been an Anglican from birth and never witnessed burning of incense
@@sophieopiyo4906 Incense is by no means uncommon in the Church of England and the same applies to genuflecting and making the sign of the cross. Practice varies from one place of worship to another.
Damn, there were a lot of black folk there that day.
@Onyx Silverfeather, it was a Commonwealth Day service.
