Perfect
Sang this hymn with this tune at school in England in the1950s. A staple of the Anglican church. Must have surprised wartime German POWs working on farms who could attend the village church on Sundays
It certainly surpised Ribbentrop when he visited Durham Cathedral back in the 30s and they played it. According to eye witnesses he did the nazi salute and had to be restrained when they tried to stop him
I remembered one of our literature chapter back in our school days where the author explained the patriotism of the 2 German prisoner who share the same cell as of the author. when the author and his ethnic friends had devotion they sang this song/hymn in their native language but with the Austrian tune. The two German though they don’t understand the language, they literally stand in attention throughout the song just because it sound familiar with their national anthem and the author was really impressed by their patriotism when he found that out.
Interesting that it was still being used in English churches in the 50s! My understanding is that Abbot's Leigh was written in 1942, by the assistant head of religious broadcasting at the BBC, specifically to use for this hymn in place of Austria.
I was born and grew up in one of the colonies and we sang these hymns as well. There is a great legacy of faith and worship that the English bequeathed us. Indeed if it weren’t for English missionaries who sacrificed their lives to carry the gospel far and wide the whole world might still be in darkness. That small isle was raised by God to be His light in a dark world. I am beyond grateful and humbled by it all. Thanks be to God in Christ Jesus! Amen. Hallelujah! The people in darkness have seen a great light!
This tune by Haydn was the Austrian Imperial Hymn of the Habsburg‘s. Hofmann von Fallersleben set “Deutschland, Deutschland Über Alles“ to it, and thus, Germany “stole” Austria’s National Anthem. I find it difficult to separate that from my thoughts when I hear it in church. I prefer the alternate tune.
One of the most stunning, beautiful descants I've ever heard! Hallelujah!!!!!!!!!
How soothing and peaceful to hear this lovely song offering to the Lord almighty God, which we should be thankful.
This song was sung during service when my father was a minister with the Evangelical Lutheran church.
This recording is insanely beautiful. I swear I can hear my grandparents singing in here, brings me back to being a really young kid bored in church.
I remember as a teenager..singing this beautiful song..in Ridgewood Pentecostal Church.. Amen.. Glorious things of thee are spoken..Zion city of our God. ! Hallelujah..!! Bring peace to Zion Precious Lord Jesus..!! Amen..!!
1:1 the same melody is used in our German national anthem 😃
It is a beautiful hymn tune. Greetings from N.H.

To celebrate emperor francis
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz
Hoch als Herrscher, hoch als Weiser
Steht er in des Ruhmes Glanz
Liebe windet Lorbeerreiser
Ihm zum ewig grünen Kranz
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Über blühende Gefilde
Reicht sein Zepter weit und breit
Säulen seines Throns sind Milde
Biedersinn und Redlichkeit
Und von seinem Wappenschilde
Strahlet die Gerechtigkeit
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Sich mit Tugenden zu schmücken
Achtet er der Sorgen wert
Nicht um Völker zu erdrücken
Flammt in seiner Hand das Schwert
Sie zu segnen, zu beglücken
Ist der Preis, den er begehrt
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser
Unsern guten Kaiser Franz!
Er zerbrach der Knechtschaft Bande
Hob zur Freiheit uns empor!
Früh’ erleb’ er deutscher Lande
Deutscher Völker höchsten Flor
Und vernehme noch am Rande
Später Gruft der Enkel Chor
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser

"AUSTRIA, composed by Franz Joseph Haydn from a Croatian folk hymn, has most often been used in the singing of this hymn.
"This tune was later used by Haydn in his string quartet in C, Op. 70, No. 5, “The Emperor,” and is a beautiful, stately option for this text. It embodies strength, assurance, warmth, and sensitivity, all in equal measure.
"The consideration of a tune doesn’t end with Haydn’s compositional skill, however. Haydn’s tune eventually became used as the national anthem of Austria and, later, Germany. "
When it is sung to the tune of Austria it is a great hymn.Amazingly good choir and a very good organist
I'm not Anglican anymore...but loved the days of singing in the choir during my teen years...this sounds good..
Why did you leave the anglican church?
Princess Anne had this at her first wedding in Westminster Abbey, The re was a public outcry because it is the tune of the German national anthem. We often sang it at school and in church .
Understandable. You can;t have the British Royal family marrying to a tune associated with the nazi regime.
Really Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser, a song of the HRE, Austria, Austria-Hungary, adopted as an English church hymn with English lyrics long before the Nazis were a thing.
@@jeffkardosjr.3825 Judged by association alas.
People are too quick to castigate a piece of music because of its connotations. This is a superb piece of music!
@@jeffkardosjr.3825 Absolutely correct, however wartime memories and emotions were rekindled at the time once the tune is used in English gathered.
"Abbot Leigh" the alternative tune was in fact composed for the hymn as a recognition of that wartime sentiment raised by @barrynicolle1821 above.
Austria is most hallowed tune for the hymn no doubt but the humans are wired differently.
So beautiful..! I remember this sweet song..! I sang this song as a young teenager in the 1950s...! He has been so Faithful..all these years..!! This sounds so much like the Choir I sang in..!!
Awesome, I am a 43 year old man, with 33 years experience as a Church organist innthe anglican church, and I got to say this is TRUE WORSHIP TO OUR GOD, A BRILLIANT BALANCE OF WORSHIPPING GOD THROUGH THE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS, GIVING PROMINENCE TO EXALTING GOD & WORSHIPPING GOD , AS OPPOSED TO OVER EMPHASIZING ON DESCANTS AND GIVING MORE PROMINENCE TO THAT, BUT THIS CHOIR IS WORSHIPPING GOD IN TNE BEAUTY OF HOLINESS, TO SHINE FOR THE GLORY OF GOD, I PERSONALLY LOVE DESCANTS ONLY FOR CHRISTMAS CAROLS & EASTER DAY SERVICES, 😅THANK YOU, MAY GOD ALMIGHTY BLESS YOU ALL
The descant adds even more beauty to this beautiful hymn. Praise God in the highest.
Inspired by the song. What a promise and privilege for us who belong to Jesus. Indeed Glorious things are spoken and IT IS WRITTEN.Let us say AMEN.

Amen
I well remember "Glorious Things" as a processional hymn in the home church of my youth. Beautiful words and music, completely appropriate for Divine Worship. Infinitely preferable to the "music" that's sung by the many rockin' praise groups in numerous churches today.
1
Glorious things of thee are spoken,
Zion, city of our God;
He whose word cannot be broken
Formed thee for his own abode;
On the Rock of Ages founded,
What can shake thy sure repose?
With salvation's walls surrounded,
Thou may'st smile at all thy foes.
2.
See the streams of living waters,
Springing from eternal love,
Well supply thy sons and daughters,
And all fear of want remove;
Who can faint while such a river
Ever flows their thirst t'assuage?
Grace, which like the Lord, the giver,
Never fails from age to age.
3
Round each habitation hov'ring,
See the cloud and fire appear
For a glory and a cov'ring,
Showing that the Lord is near;
Thus deriving from their banner
Light by night and shade by day,
Safe they feed upon the manna
Which he gives them when they pray.
4.
Savior, if of Zion's city
I, thro' grace, a member am,
Let the world deride or pity,
I will glory in thy name;
Fading is the worldling's pleasure,
All his boasted pomp and show;
Solid joys and lasting treasure
None but Zion's children know.
Glória a Deus!!!

Wonderful recording!
It took me a good five seconds to realize this was a picture and not a video.
This melody is my favorite of the two+ melodies sung to these words. I still this hymn to this melody when I cleaning my apartment or doing dishes. It makes my household chores not seem so odious. 😊
We used to sing this great song at high school and we did not really understand it. Thank you God for salvation in Christ that has helped me understand this song. 🙏🏿

So beautiful. Waiying for the descant and i wasn't disappointed. Praise G*d.
Sang this powerful hymn when in the school choir, Kolkata in the 1970s.
This hymn always reminds me of the German National Anthem.
And Austria-Hungary
Because it's the same tune.

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL 🎀
This hymn is mostly based on by this psalm.
The hymn tune "Austria" is composed by Franz Joseph Haydn. "His foundation is on holy mountains, The Lord loves the gates of Zion more than any dwelling in Jacob. Glorious things are said of you, O city of God! Selah Rahab and Babylon I count among those who know me. See, Philistia and Tyre, with Ethiopia, 'This one was born there.' And of Zion it will be said: 'Each one was born in it.' The Most High will establish it;
the Lord notes in the register of the peoples: 'This one was born there.' Selah So singers and dancers: 'All my springs are in you.'" (Psalm 87: 2-7 NABRE)
My mother was born in Austria Hungary which in my opinion was there peak of European civilization when we had honorable kings who were descendants of. Rex Deus
Gott erhalte, Gott beschutze unsern Kaiser, unser Land!
Glorious sounds and wonderful words of His love.
I think this is my favourite hymn...
Because
It is my experience.
I was
born again, as Jesus told Nicodemus. Having repented of my sins, Baptised in the MIGHTY ALL POWERFUL NAME OF JESUS, cleansed, by the remission, lifting od my sins from me by HIS APPLIED BLOOD,
(Acts 2.38-39) of my sins, then and I actually felt a wind of Jesus Spirit, touch my forehead.
Was it also a tongue of fire !!! I believe Ii was. Marked as His Own...with HIS ETERNAL ALMIGHTY SAVING NAME ON ME.. I walk in newness of life, a heart of flesh, instead of stone. Praise and thanksgiving, be unto the ONE who sits on the Throne in Power and Strength..
Glorious things of THEE ARE SPOKEN...I'm part of Zion's City.. thank you Jesus..
The lyrics made me worship God, but the music made me restore the Habsburg Monarchy and the Austrian Empire.
Gott erhalte, Gotta beschutze unser Kaiser, unser Land...
The Franz Joseph Haydn hymn tune AUSTRIA "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken" is also Germany's National Anthem, DEUTSCHLAND, DEUTSCHLAND UBER ALLES.
And it was Austria's too, Gott Erhalte Gott Beschutze.
In Germany we have long stopped singing “Deutschland, Deutschland über alles” but rather “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit”. This should be known by now.

What are the lyrics?
This is funny because Austria-Hungary used this tune for there anthem
During the German Empire, from 1871 to 1918, The tune of "God Save the King" served as their national anthem. The Weimar Republic (1918-1933) adopted John Newton's music from the hymn "Glorious Things of Thee are Spoken" as the German National Hymn. Hitler then used it from 1933 to 1945, changing the lyrics of course, to support his nationalist propaganda. Hitler also tried to introduce another anthem, taken from a beer hall drinking song... but it was so completely despicable and full of propaganda that it was rejected by virtually everyone. In 1949 until 1990, the Federal Republic of Germany returned to "Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken" as the national anthem, and remains so to this day. This is an example of how hijacking great hymns can be used to ignite populist thinking to bring about nationalism. Here are the lyrics, in both Deutch and English: Ich hab mich ergeben
Mit Herz und mit Hand,
Dir Land voll Lieb' und Leben
Mein deutsches Vaterland!
Mein Herz ist entglommen,
Dir treu zugewandt,
Du Land der Frei'n und Frommen,
Du herrlich Hermannsland!
Du Land, reich an Ruhme,
Wo Luther erstand,
Für deines Volkes Tume
Reich ich mein Herz und Hand!
Ach Gott, tu erheben
Mein jung Herzensblut
Zu frischem freud'gem Leben,
Zu freiem frommem Mut!
Will halten und glauben
An Gott fromm und frei
will Vaterland dir bleiben
Auf ewig fest und treu.
Lass Kraft mich erwerben
In Herz und in Hand,
Zu leben und zu sterben
Fürs heil'ge Vaterland!
I have given myself
With heart and with hand
To you, country full of love and life,
My German Fatherland!
My heart was enlightened,
Loyally turned towards you,
You land of the free and faithful,
You glorious Hermann's land!
You land, rich in glory,
Where Luther arose,
For thy Volkstum
I reach out my heart and hand!
O God, raise
My young heart's blood
Towards fresh joyful life,
Towards free and faithful courage!
I will hold and believe
In God faithfully and freely;
Will, Fatherland, remain
Forever strengthened and loyal to you.
Let me gain strength
In heart and hand,
To live and to die
For the holy Fatherland!
"Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken" takes its tune from Haydn, who originally wrote it as a personal anthem for the Holy Roman Emporer.
Not sure what "Ich hab mich ergeben" has to do with this tune
Tim, you are incorrect; check out this video which explains the origins of the melody ua-cam.com/video/wD6GjMo1ol0/v-deo.html
They should've sang this when Donnie Brasko got voted out of office, and should've turned it into "Deutschland Über alles" 😂

Um, the melody of the German national anthem...
Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser is an old anthem of the Holy Roman Empire. Written in 1797 by Franz Joseph Haydn and Lorenz Leopold Haschka, it served as a personal anthem to Francis II, the last Holy Roman Emperor. After the fall of the Holy Roman Empire in 1806, Francis II became Emperor of Austria. In 1826, Lorenz Leopold Haschka wrote new lyrics to fit with Francis' position as Emperor of Austria, and the 1826 version of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser is often claimed to be the anthem of Austria-Hungary. However, this anthem was only used until Francis II died in 1835. Then, new lyrics were written for his successor, Ferdinand (Segen Hohen Sohne Osterreichs, Unsern Kaiser Ferdinand!), which were used until Ferdinand abdicated in 1848. The 1826 version of Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser were used from 1848 until 1854 for Ferdinand's successor, Franz Joseph. In 1854, new lyrics were written, Gott erhalte, gott beschutze, and after several alterations made in 1867, it became the official anthem of Austria-Hungary, and was used until the Empire fell at the end of World War I. This version of Gott erhalte, gott beschutze, was sung at the funeral of Otto von Habsburg in 2011.

Deutschlandlied
Deutchlandlied (1841) is the latecomer having been preceded by Keyserlied (1796) and words to Glorious things ... (1779).
Deutchlandlied did not become the national anthem of Germany until 1922 a decade before Hitler and his nasty Nazis came to power.
@@buddyroeginocchio9105 Yep
I started humming this tune absentmindedly with a friend while in Germany...and he told IMMEDIATELY to stop...as it was the tune used for the Nazi whatever anthem, and that I could be arrested for singing this....seriously...

Your friend of course is quite wrong, the tune is not and never has been illegal. It is the words of the first two of three stanzas in Deutschland lied that is no longer used but even that is not illegal. Your friend may have been thinking of the Nazi salute which is probably illegal.
Again, Deutschland lied predates the Nazis by at least 75 years.
