    Funnily enough, when I play this game I end up going for much longer than most people apparently do. I think part of that is that I always enjoyed the game for being a sandbox rather than the progression? I've killed the ender dragon maybe 4 times throughout my probably tens of thousands of hours in the game. It's not really that fun of a fight imo. It's mechanically complex but simultaneously fairly boring and tedious with failure potentially sending you into the void and losing everything.
    I think you touched on a really good point that people notice proportional changes more than absolute changes in games. For me, I enjoy 1.21 purely for the tuff bricks and expanded copper block options. That said, the update doesn't fundamentally change anything about the way I approach the game. The mace is probably pretty neat but I haven't had time to mess around with one yet.
    It's worth consideration whether the game would be freshened up by changing core mechanics. Imagine an Inventory Overhaul update! Adding ways to invest XP into your character's directly instead of gear? Adding area protection mechanics to the base game? Adding meaningful minigame UIs to blocks we already use? Enchanting is rather boring and could benefit from something like that last one. A lot of the best updates did this on accident and were left in (on Java edition, at least): being able to fit in 1 block spaces with trapdoors, and being able to put anything in your off-hand to name two (on Bedrock the offhand can only hold like 5 things; they didn't intend for it to be so useful but it was very popular so kept it on Java).
    Also phantoms need to be removed from the game, or encountering them needs to be the result of intentional player action rather than just forgetting to right click a specific block once every three days.

    • @DundG
      @DundG Місяць тому

      Not that Phantoms are not annoying. But you can build easily a light sensor that rings a bell once you can sleep that is precise to the milisecond. Reminds you every night then.

    I like to talk about this through the lens of things like design and balance moreso than overall quality. Modern Minecraft is far more polished, looks much nicer, and has way more content. However, a few very impactful changes, like health regen, stackable food, sprinting, and shields have significantly changed both how the game plays out and how you approach it.
    In pre-Adventure Update Minecraft, it was structured and paced almost like a survival horror game. There were hard limits to how much food you could process, store and carry, and as a result you were basically capped on how much healing you could take with you on an expedition. Every arrow and spider bite and 5-block fall you took would slowly whittle that supply down, and you'd also constantly be asking "is it worth using this whole cooked porkchop to heal this two-heart injury?"
    In post-Adventure Minecraft, the gameplay loop is closer to "grab your 150 cooked steaks, sprint through the cave, stuff your face every time your hunger gets low enough that HP stops regenerating, and survive effortlessly until a stray hit from behind knocks you into lava." It's not that the progression is worse, or that the enemies are easier, or that not every new feature is some amazing multi-purpose omnitool that you don't know how you ever lived without, it's that the core gameplay just isn't as engaging as it used to be. It's the kind of unnecessary and poorly planned rebalance that'd completely kill a lot of games, Minecraft is just fortunate enough to be the one game where "core gameplay loop" is a small enough fraction of the appeal that people still love it anyway.

    Yes it is getting worse. Anyone that disagrees, please tell me what glow berries, cherry blossoms, glow squids and sniffers have added that meaningfully changes the way that I experience the game? It's all inventory clutter. That doesn't even cover the weird mechanics they keep trying to force, like sneaking in caves, transporting frogs to the nether etc. etc. Mojang need to start adding things that ACTUALLY change the game instead of filling my inventory. Shulkers and bundles aren't good enough at this rate, since every time they add a new "solution", they add 50 new items that stack awkwardly...

    • @DundG
      @DundG Місяць тому +4

      "please tell me what glow berries, cherry blossoms, glow squids and sniffer"
      glow berries, cherry blossoms: Building? Like the main feature that is Minecraft since day 1, having more blooks to build. Plus the glow berry is nice to lighten up places in a different way than torches or lanterns, more magical feeling.
      glow squids and sniffer: Those where the communities choices... But still, glow ink and two new plants for decoration plus mobs for more ambience in your world, like building a deep sea base or an dinosaur biome for Sniffers.
      You strike me as the non creative type!

    • @Handles_AreStupid
      @Handles_AreStupid Місяць тому +1

      @@DundG I don't think you understand what I'm getting at. I know that blocks are for building. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you aren't the first to realise that...
      Also, glow squids to not produce any light, they meerly ignore light levels in their texture. That isn't the same thing as being a light source like a torch is.
      My main point is that each of these new features you encounter will fill your inventory with junk that just isn't needed. If you use silk touch on ores, you will now find that you are regularly gathering 16 different stacks of ore due to deepslates addition. You will also have your inventory filled by the 8 different stone varients as well.
      You can pull the "muh building blocks" argument, but at a certain point, you need to consider the actual experience of inventory management in this game and how shockingly bad it is now. You can't even argue that you can simply just throw unwanted items away, since that gets tedious in and of itself.
      When you have a total of 36 inventory slots, having 16 for ores, a minimum of 2 for tools, 1 stack of blocks, 1 stack of wood and 1 for a weapon, your inventory feels pretty worthless. That's 21/36 slots taken up immediately, and that isn't even counting torches, which you now need more of due to the larger caves...

    • @DundG
      @DundG Місяць тому +2

      @@Handles_AreStupid "Also, glow squids to not produce any light, they meerly ignore light levels in their texture." Where did I supposedly even claim that?! Quote the sentence.
      "16 different stacks of ore" Really... you mean you mine from top to bottom in a single session AND find rarer variants like deepslate coal or deepslate emerald, or stone diamond and stone redstone while you're at? I really don't believe you.
      Plus, if you REALLY don't want unwanted stones, ores or even any type of items, you can spread for example 5 slots iron, 3 slots gold, 1 slot diamond and the rest stone around to fill up your inventory and you're unable to pick up any items except which are already in your inventory.
      Plus use redstone to order your inventory so you don't need to do it everytime manually. There are tutorials for those contraptions, which aren't difficult to build.
      And any game that lives from gathering a lot of items with limited space will have this "issue". Inventory management is part of the game and always will be as a not so small part of the community wants more building blocks and natural blocks. Heck I just googled and found a mod with every stone variant being able to be every ore variant. So 64 different ore types, so I guess some don't mind what you hate.
      "have added that meaningfully changes the way that I experience the game" Oh I misread. Don't know how YOU experience the game and those features probably don't. But who cares about the experience of one single player?! If it isn't for you, it isn't, will hardly affect the games popularity!
      "Sorry to burst your bubble, but you aren't the first to realise that..." Oh the Sass. I give it a 3/10. Nice start, but you misreading me the very next sentence weakens it a lot!

      Because of their inventory mismanagement therefore a game about building should never again add new blocks or something. God forbid we get a new flower. It is all "needless clutter" apparently
      Some players really want the building game to be just cobblestone and oak wood. They are the only ones who prefer current birch biome over the one we saw in concept art. I mean how can anyone be against more immersive and beautiful biomes like cherry blossom
