Anybody that makes a comment that they dislike that video/audio is a nut job. That is truly a classic New Orleans style that no one can copy. Herlin Riley is one of New Orleans finest!
I had this on video tape years ago Herlin and Johnny Vidacovich , all about the New Orleans style of playing...I wish I could get a copy of it again on DVD. Just gotta love Herlin Riley.
I've been fortunate to see this guy perform on numerous occassions. You got to see him to believe it....He smiles ALL the time.He makes folks smile as they watch him play........
Now is that Funky !!! My that is so cool - spicy trumpet, such a great sound and that snare sure sure knows how to swing. Great piano solo! Would love to see you guys
I love the sense of style he has on the drums. Everything about his playing has so much personality. This drum solo is transcribed in a book by Johnny Vidocavich that I have been working out of recently and it is very difficult. Herlin riley really is fantastic.
People mentioned, that Herlin rally is the best Drummer in New Orleans; my name is John Doe.OK! We’ll start from here! I am from New Orleans; Born 1956 July 31,I attended Harden Elementary school, Lawless junior high school, Saint Augustine high school, purple and gold,Shout out to Alumni class of 1975! Hey! Herlin is not only the best,#1 and he’s the essential, essence...Life, The guiding Star !!!The man is the Goat! If you are there in New Orleans or visiting trying to feel what it’s like to experience soulful, fundamental, historic and invigorating;a great time,Loving food and Great music by one of the greats, please!!!”Family Experience “Herlin Riley!!!💙🔥👏 Also, shut out to Nupes and Omega‘s.
Thinking about it again, I wonder if this could be just TOO good. It is ultra-polished perfection that surely leaves the average drummer, including me, in awe. I hasten to add that I am no expert on the subject but I wonder if the old-time New Orleans drummers attained this level any more than their equipment could match today's equipment. I would be grateful to hear from those who know.
Love what Joe Cleetus said, "He looked like he would get joy in hitting anything that would produce sound!". I felt that watching his tambourine instruction on youtube - or "Tootie Ma Was A Big Fine Thing" at Snug Harbor also on youtube. He's a truly joyful musician.
Yep, me too. Back in the 1980s and 1990s on DCI videos (Weckl, Chambers, Chad Smith, etc.) they would show that preview. Also they would show the Gene Krupa video clip, which was awesome.
I remember as a kid having another drum video, and they previewed other videos in the beginning, they showed from 3:09 - 3:25 I used to watch that part over and over again because I couldn't afford the video.
Saw him at Snug Harbor in NO on Nov 2, 2013 with Ike Stubblefield on the Hammond B3. He looked like he would get joy in hitting anything that would produce sound!
Presumably this is much the same sort of setup that would have been used by the New Orleans musicians in the 1920s. It's interesting to see a drummer using a minimal kit like this to such brilliant effect. I wonder how many more drummers got out on a gig these days without taking a hi-hat or tomoms (except as a table for the washboard).
Herlin is probably the best NOLA drummer alive, but for fun, seek out Baby Dodds on a recording called "Talking And Drum Solos" for a real introduction to the history of early NOLA jazz drumming. There are many uploads of this on UA-cam.
I have had it pointed out that the difference between Herlin Riley and the New Orleans drummers is not one of quality, but of style. Of course that is true, so my preceding post was off the mark.

The best drummer that I've ever worked with. We played with Ahmad Jamal for a little over 4 years.
I love the sense of style he has on the drums. Everything about his playing has so much personality. This drum solo is transcribed in a book by Johnny Vidocavich that I have been working out of recently and it is very difficult. Herlin riley really is fantastic.
This is the way in I would like to carry on living. With all this fabulous music beside me all the time. Excellent post!!!
Great playing! And the great thing about this video is, It's Not Out of Sync!!!! like so many others on UA-cam. Way to go!

Wonderful !!!!!!!!
Herlin is the best dixieland drummer out there!
This isn't dixieland, but New Orleans 2nd Line.
That's some tight snare he's got there. Those buzz rolls...
OK. Two things:
1. I've got a HUGE smile on my face.
2. My foot keeps hopping!
Awesome!

This guy "swings a band" like the Titanic hittin' an ice berg...
I have had it pointed out that the difference between Herlin Riley and the New Orleans drummers is not one of quality, but of style. Of course that is true, so my preceding post was off the mark.
