When I went to hear Roy Haynes at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola this past September, I saw Herlin through a window recording this is an adjacent room. I'm so glad it's posted here. From the time that I first heard him, he has always been one of my favorites. Herlin takes from the past and utilizes it in ways that are unique to him. He is a "natural" musician with an original voice and everything he plays feels great! Thank You for this!

I love your approach. Sometimes percussionists spend so much time exploring "exotic" tambourine techniques we forget our own culture. Thank you for reminding us.!

LOL & i enjoy every moment of it

Love it!! Exciting to see Dr. Riley use the same methods to teach the techniques! Notice: he's playing pandeiro-style right-handed, then switched to play Gospel-style...left-handed! Deep!!!! Of course, the most exciting thing to see is how HR's face and whole demeanor light up when he's playing the 'rine!

August 9, 2023_22:47 pm: Good afternoon Mr. Riley! While observing your hand movements, I noticed similarities to my own hand movements when playing the 6" Brass Chinese Buddhist Temple Cymbals. You gave me sufficient hope for wanting to possibly explore the tambourine. Thank you so much! 🙏🙏🙏💐👍👍👍

I just love the simplicity of your tutuorial playing of the Tambourine, great job. After watching this video I'm not so intimidated by this wonderful sounding instrument. I'm going to purchase a beginners one, then if I can't get the rhythm together I'll give it to my children, if I do master it, ill buy myself a more expensive one, thanks for this video!

What's up Herlin? . Last time I went home down south ( to Dallas) I was playing Tambourine in Church :-) Someone was asking me about it because they were surprised. LOL . When I looked up lessons (for them) I was glad to see you. Thanks! Of course, I learned where you learned. In Church! Peace and Blessings my brother. Thank God for our upbringing.

People think that the tambourine is an "easy" instrument that takes no real skill. However, it's one of the hardest drums to play well and sound good. It has many techniques and styles from around the world. The African American church style, Orchestral style, Brazilian pandeiro, Galician pandereta, Italian tamburello and even the Egyptin riq and all of them take skill.

Thanks! I stumbled on this by accident after searching UA-cam looking for good, understandable information on gospel playing. There are lots of good, inspiring examples, but not much in the way of quality teaching like you do here. Consider editing the title or tags to direct percussionists like me to your video.

You just gave away all my secrets for playing the tambourine. lol, thanks though. It'll help people who feel like a tambourine can just be struck and jingle and whalla they're in sync with the jam. The only thing I would add is that if a person is playing impromptu (without prior practice) with others who are singing live... follow the drum beat of the song. Don't create a whole new beat to their song because it can throw off the flow or vibe they are wanting to create. Oh, and build up to the finish - don't give it all away in the beginning or your hands will be tired later.

You know he's a drummer. His perpetually moving feet doing the boom and the chick. I was never interested in the tambourine until I was this small band play and they had this tambourine player. He was so good at it, it sounded like a whole kit of drums almost. So I figure it'll be great for acoustic sessions.
