Watching Keith makes me wish I had a dad growing up to learn all the valuable things he can do. I'm 47 now and feel like a kid watching his dad fix things and I'm in awe because I've always been jealous of families that have loving parents. I was lucky to have a set of twin friends I grew up with that there mother showed me love and affection I didn't get at home and grateful for making me the man I am today to give my kids everything I didn't get. Keith and Renae are such amazing parents and shows through their kids. Love this channel because you get every aspect of sailing life through there channel. A great balance of boat work, sailing, exploring, and family life.
Great story, and I had a Dad that was terrific in many ways but was very harsh ( a Marine Staff Sargent) sometimes during events I find myself doing exactly as my Dad would do, so to not have and example would definitely change things a lot. Keith is a great talent -cerebral, patient, kind, and knowledgable. And like many smart people he knows his shortcomings (few) but is always willing to learn something new!
I SO agree!!!! Even though my dad was around, he never taught me ANYTHING. I was always told, "you're in the way, get out!". I would LOVE to have a mentor like Keith in my life!!!
I learned all of that stuff on my own over the years, personally. My Dad is still alive, but he knows nothing about mechanical systems, construction, etc. The last thing he worked on in that regard was a 1955 Chevy drag car about 10 years before I was born. I never had anyone in my family teach me anything significant, mainly because I've never lived around them. Yet, I can do just about anything related to residential home improvement and quite a bit to repair and modify vehicles, not to mention multiple unrelated technical skill sets. I've learned to be resourceful and just push myself through the learning curve. As a 50 year old guy, last year I was able to learn how to create and publish an NFT collection and a couple of Full Stack dApps for a non-profit I volunteer with. All this to make the point - don't sell yourself short, you can learn about anything you put your mind (and time) into.
I was very interested in hearing Keith explain the electrical systems on the boat. My husband is in electrical/hvac. I've learned a lot from him. Keith is good at teaching in a simplistic way. I enjoy knowing how things work.
I completely agree with you, Keith, and the commenter. The family is where it's at. Sending our elders to homes to die and sending our children off to be raised by strangers all day while we go to a job we generally loathe. And for what? If we live with less material things and live more intentionally, and even below our means, we can enjoy what's most important, spend more time with our families, and do more meaningful things.
Couldn't agree with you more on family & the lack of it that has degraded our society tremendously. I didn't have my first child until I was 62 & retired, that is when I finally realized that kids & family bring the most joy you can ever imagine & the meaning of unconditional love. Best thing that has every happened in my life & I get to spend as much time with them as possible, I wish I had more. I also agree 100% on the phones & Internet. Kids today lack the face to face interactions that we all had years ago. Thanks again for sharing your adventures in so many different ways.

Keith, this isnt a negative comment, but one of concern. You have sounded a little bit out of breath in the last few videos. This is coming from a man that didnt listen when I was told the same thing. It almost cost me my life. A couple months after being told that ( and ignored) I had a massive heart attack. It was through the Grace of God that I'm still here. Perhaps you should see a cardiologist? You may already have, I'm just saying it's better to be safe than sorry. You seem to have a wonderful family, and a great life. However I found out in a quick and a hurry how important it is to have good health too.

Renee, not fair! You told us that Keith was going to explain how he figured out the problem, and then you cut him off and promoted your bluewater cruising class. I and many others don't have the opportunity to do what you have done, but we want to hear his experience and wisdom in practice. Kate, follow your Dad around and ask him to explain what he's doing. Frankly, the man is a genius and you can learn a lot from him. You'll be a marine technician in no time!
I feel the exact same way when it comes to raising kids, we live on land but do the same with our 3 boys. The work, contribute and are welcome at home as long as they are being part of it.
I wasn’t going to comment on any of the videos until I finished binge watching! But hearing Keith speak his values on raising his kids - wow! What a wonderful world this would be if more people thought like this!!! Your children have more life lessons, more world culture and a love for each other than most. You don’t have to justify your way of living - it’s perfect what you and Renee have done.
Wow...Anyone would be hard pressed not to adore Keith. I remember one show where he said that as far as he was concerned, the kids could stay as long as they wanted and here he said it again. Good for you. This world is scary enough...stay home as long as you can, be a productive member in the family dynamic, work as a team when needed and all the rest will come in time. Keith, this was one of my favorite episodes! So true about the Internet, the phones and all that. Going in a boat nowadays is about getting a pause from Internet. We all need that. I have been following your UA-cam-channel since you bought the cat. I am the same age as you are. Looking at the same boat you have as alternative for a world cruise. Having 2 boys 12 and 14 and a daughter at 32. Wife not that keen, but not totally against. Still caught in the everyday life though, it’s not the right timing. Hope I can make the dream come true one day when I am still around.

Totally agree, Keith and Renee are the best. They don’t force sailing down there kids throats, but they get the techniques and the knowledge of sailing in their own time based on their individual desires and preferences. As long as the parents are healthy, the family will stay together.
Was happy to hear your explanation on your children leaving the boat. Although it's no one's business you were graceful and direct. It's so much fun to see your family unit doing what you do sailing all over the world. Your children are very blessed to have you and your wife as parents indeed. I believe adding the young invites to your boat to experience sailing with you shows how much you care for your children to be around their peers visiting exciting location's as you travel. Also, I LOVE how you addressed the nay sayers of bringing the young adults to the boat!!! It's NOT about "hooking up" but more about broadening horizons and interpersonal connections. It offers something these kids may never have a chance at!!! Physically I'm too old, mentally I'm too young, but I'd jump at that chance!!! fyi. it wasnt the switch, its the LOAD on the switch. probably to much air conditioning or AC+watermaker. if he replaces that switch itll happen again. just a theory.
You guys are ideal parents. Seriously. When I think of strong parental role models, you guys are my go to. You've spoken about this a few times: living a parent centered life, not kid centered. A parent must lead, guide, set boundaries, and build a child into a useful, adult capable of problem solving and cooperating under sometimes stressful and even dangerous conditions. You've built them into proper humans, I'd say. So fascinating to watch your family unit grow together. It makes me sad, not having grown up with an environment like that. Makes me think how would I have turned out, how would my life be different with parents like you guys? Y'all are leaving a HUGE impact on your kids and those you reach in these videos. I got into sailing later in life (around mid 20s, 32 now) and found you guys just after the switch to catamaran from monohull. Funny enough, I knew the name Zatara from doing a big project on the book/movie "Count of Monte Cristo" in high school. I wonder(ed) how many people get the reference these days? It made me feel immediately connected in some small way thru the internet, that I was in on a secret of sorts to a movie reference you were using for the boat/channel.

Was down in BVI and saw a ship container carrying abut 10 catamarans. My husband and kids knew I would not stop talking about my dream sailing life from that point forward. lol I have learned so much from you guys! A Healthy Marriage/Family is most important...so many unhealthy relationships out there, thanks for being a good example! I absolutely love watching Keith work on the boat. I grew up on sailboats and as they say "it's always something!". QUESTION: Was Keith ALWAYS good with engines, electrical, and most of the other things he has had to deal with or did he learn everything as they occurred and necessitated repair? He is incredible and reminds me of my dad in the 1980s changing the oil on the Yanmar engine and the circuit breakers and replacing bilge pumps. Way to go Keith!

Hi Keith/Renee, I think you guys are doing an amazing job raising your children. They are respectful, open minded, super friendly, very well rounded individuals. I agree with them staying onboard, with family, until they are ready to leave, as long as they continue to contribute to the well being of everyone onboard. Wow, some of those individuals who sent in videos already look pretty darn good. How in the world do you decide who to invite with some many awesome videos to watch. Your willingness to share this experience with other young adults is fantastic. Very generous indeed. I am certain many of the young adults that send in videos would never be able to experience living onboard, sailing the open ocean, on such a vessel like yours until much later in life when they have the financial means to do so. Maybe some would never be able to afford such an experience in their lifetime. I really enjoyed the last group of newbies that came aboard. To make things simple in electrical world for those not naturally inclined: You start at the source of electricity with your voltage meters (Nice choice in Fluke Keith) and then you follow the path of electricity to where it stops. His obviously stopped at the switch. He disconnects switch after verifying the electric (either one leg or both) aren't coming through, and verifies its working where it comes in to the switch like he did. That is what told him the switch was bad. From there he removes the switch and recompletes the circuit as if the switch didnt exist, and then he turns on triple verifying that was indeed the issue and now goes to get the new switch. :) I am always impressed how awesome Keith is on things he probably never specialized in. You guys are amazing! If I were 18-21 I would totally be applying for the live aboard. Hell if I were 30 I would at least fake it .... XD
@@bmunday AC here won't have anything to do with it as this is the homerun that feeds the entire boat on the line side. The load side is everything on the other side of his fuses and line side is the source that feeds his panel. The AC itself would be between the panel and the unit. If a faulty AC unit starts wearing out it will start drawing higher than normal amperage which will trigger the breaker for safety indicating there is a problem. This is all obviously assuming Keith keeps it all properly wired.
What you have to know to keep a boat going is very sobering. It is amazing how life can prepare you for great adventures you didn’t even imagine you would have.

Granted some children might need to grow up faster. If the means are there for kids to stick around and enjoy life while they figure out what they want to do in life let it be. I was completely devastated when you fast forwarded through Kieth’s electrical explanation. I love yo learn that technical stuff from Kieth. Hoping it’s helping me learn for my future boat. I’m also and electrical engineer, so I’m just a nerd. Hoping Kieth makes a how to video series about the different boat systems some day!

Hi Keith, it never ceases to amaze me how people project their own ideas and view on how you and your wife should be raising your kids, screw that! All I can see is that your children have seriously benefitted from a well-rounded, world encompassing upbringing. I absolutely agree with you re cellphones, they have far more negatives than positives. For a tool that was meant to improve communication they have, in my opinion done quite the opposite, I also think they have been the 'fuel' behind a huge upsurge in narcissism, and toxic abuse. I personally belong to no social platforms, other than UA-cam, and I most certainly don't believe everything I see, or hear related to a phone/computer/tablet screen. I do my own homework and fact check most things. You guys have done a great job with your kids, and I've a feeling they will likely bring more into the world than they take out of it! Your good people, not perfect people, and as that applies to most of us, I wouldn't have it any other way! Thanks for sharing the journey!

Awesome philosophy there Keith, It is ALL about family! You suddenly realise (even though we are close to our family) as we lost my dad recently and then to top that off Ive been diagnosed with terminal Gastric cancer. So live while you can and not for tommorow.

I love watching Sailing Zatara. I sailed quite a bit as a youngster, and really envy your lifestyle. I was surprised at the negative comments Keith was talking about at then end of this episode. I don’t know why I was surprised because there are always those who look for the negative in anything. I was shocked to hear some feel the kids you invite are for hook ups or that the kids should leave as they get older! I think your children are getting the experience of a lifetime. Jack, Finn, and Kate are learning so much more than they would in a classroom honestly or working a desk job. I’m sure one day they will move on, but, wow! What an experience. The naysayers should just stop already! Keep up the great videos!

Kudos Renee and Keith! While many folks scoff at the idea of raising children traveling the globe by boat, I think it's one of the most fascinating. On board, as a family and crew member, they are given the love, support and confidence to be of value to each other and to become productive citizens. They learn endless skills, including social, ensuring they are likely to be very happy, productive, self sufficient, loving people. I only wish most of us would have such a supportive family. The world would be a far better place.

I have been following your UA-cam-channel since you bought the cat. I am the same age as you are. Looking at the same boat you have as alternative for a world cruise. Having 2 boys 12 and 14 and a daughter at 32. Wife not that keen, but not totally against. Still caught in the everyday life though, it’s not the right timing. Hope I can make the dream come true one day when I am still around.

I chuckled at Keith’s use of the “in like Flint” phrase. Not too many that would know the phrase and it’s origin. He reminds me of me!
Interested in the origin, because I always thought it was "in like Flynn". Referencing Errol Flynn and his escapades. EDITED TO ADD: Nevermind. Google tells me that "In Like Flint" is a 1967 movie, likely taken from "in like Flynn" as Errol Flynn had already been dead for a decade. Everyone wins (except Errol). Yay!

Totally agree, Keith and Renee are the best. They don’t force sailing down there kids throats, but they get the techniques and the knowledge of sailing in their own time based on their individual desires and preferences. As long as the parents are healthy, the family will stay together.

Was happy to hear your explanation on your children leaving the boat. Although it's no one's business you were graceful and direct. fyi. it wasnt the switch, its the LOAD on the switch. probably to much air conditioning or AC+watermaker. if he replaces that switch itll happen again. just a theory.

You guys are ideal parents. Seriously. When I think of strong parental role models, you guys are my go to. You've spoken about this a few times: living a parent centered life, not kid centered. A parent must lead, guide, set boundaries, and build a child into a useful, adult capable of problem solving and cooperating under sometimes stressful and even dangerous conditions. You've built them into proper humans, I'd say. So fascinating to watch your family unit grow together. It makes me sad, not having grown up with an environment like that. Makes me think how would I have turned out, how would my life be different with parents like you guys? Y'all are leaving a HUGE impact on your kids and those you reach in these videos. I got into sailing later in life (around mid 20s, 32 now) and found you guys just after the switch to catamaran from monohull. Funny enough, I knew the name Zatara from doing a big project on the book/movie "Count of Monte Cristo" in high school. I wonder(ed) how many people get the reference these days? It made me feel immediately connected in some small way thru the internet, that I was in on a secret of sorts to a movie reference you were using for the boat/channel.

Was down in BVI and saw a ship container carrying abut 10 catamarans. My husband and kids knew I would not stop talking about my dream sailing life from that point forward. lol I have learned so much from you guys! I absolutely love watching Keith work on the boat. I grew up on sailboats and as they say "it's always something!". QUESTION: Was Keith ALWAYS good with engines, electrical, and most of the other things he has had to deal with or did he learn everything as they occurred and necessitated repair? He is incredible and reminds me of my dad in the 1980s changing the oil on the Yanmar engine and the circuit breakers and replacing bilge pumps. Way to go Keith!

I agree with them staying onboard, with family, until they are ready to leave, as long as they continue to contribute to the well being of everyone onboard.
Wow, some of those individuals who sent in videos already look pretty darn good. How in the world do you decide who to invite with some many awesome videos to watch. Your willingness to share this experience with other young adults is fantastic. Very generous indeed. I am certain many of the young adults that send in videos would never be able to experience living onboard, sailing the open ocean, on such a vessel like yours until much later in life when they have the financial means to do so. Maybe some would never be able to afford such an experience in their lifetime. I really enjoyed the last group of newbies that came aboard. All of them were so alive, funny, engaged, and grateful for the experience. You sure can pick well.

To make things simple in electrical world for those not naturally inclined: You start at the source of electricity with your voltage meters (Nice choice in Fluke Keith) and then you follow the path of electricity to where it stops. His obviously stopped at the switch. He disconnects switch after verifying the electric (either one leg or both) aren't coming through, and verifies its working where it comes in to the switch like he did. That is what told him the switch was bad. From there he removes the switch and recompletes the circuit as if the switch didnt exist, and then he turns on triple verifying that was indeed the issue and now goes to get the new switch. :)
I am always impressed how awesome Keith is on things he probably never specialized in. You guys are amazing! If I were 18-21 I would totally be applying for the live aboard. Hell if I were 30 I would at least fake it .... XD
i dunno. I think his AC burned out the switch. how the switch failed is the real issue. its load. which load?

@@bmunday AC here won't have anything to do with it as this is the homerun that feeds the entire boat on the line side. The load side is everything on the other side of his fuses and line side is the source that feeds his panel. The AC itself would be between the panel and the unit. If a faulty AC unit starts wearing out it will start drawing higher than normal amperage which will trigger the breaker for safety indicating there is a problem. This is all obviously assuming Keith keeps it all properly wired.

The outlook you and Renee have for your kids is amazing. We hear/see so much of parents forcing their kids to grow up too fast and they might miss out on something. Granted some children might need to grow up faster. If the means are there for kids to stick around and enjoy life while they figure out what they want to do in life let it be. If they aren't becoming "privileged" kids then I say let them be. Thank you for letting us come along with you all during your travels.

Love watching Keith work, learning so much from him, hopefully the children are paying attention, absorbing the lifetime of knowledge you have. One thing to note, none of the applicants said they were interested in engineering.
Hi Keith, it never ceases to amaze me how people project their own ideas and view on how you and your wife should be raising your kids, screw that! All I can see is that your children have seriously benefitted from a well-rounded, world encompassing upbringing. I absolutely agree with you re cellphones, they have far more negatives than positives. For a tool that was meant to improve communication they have, in my opinion done quite the opposite, I also think they have been the 'fuel' behind a huge upsurge in narcissism, and toxic abuse. I personally belong to no social platforms, other than UA-cam, and I most certainly don't believe everything I see, or hear related to a phone/computer/tablet screen. I do my own homework and fact check most things. You guys have done a great job with your kids, and I've a feeling they will likely bring more into the world than they take out of it! Your good people, not perfect people, and as that applies to most of us, I wouldn't have it any other way! Thanks for sharing the journey!

I love watching Sailing Zatara. I sailed quite a bit as a youngster, and really envy your lifestyle. I was surprised at the negative comments Keith was talking about at then end of this episode. I don’t know why I was surprised because there are always those who look for the negative in anything. I was shocked to hear some feel the kids you invite are for hook ups or that the kids should leave as they get older! I think your children are getting the experience of a lifetime. Jack, Finn, and Kate are learning so much more than they would in a classroom honestly or working a desk job. I’m sure one day they will move on, but, wow! What an experience. The naysayers should just stop already! Keep up the great videos!

Kudos Renee and Keith! While many folks scoff at the idea of raising children traveling the globe by boat, I think it's one of the most fascinating. On board, as a family and crew member, they are given the love, support and confidence to be of value to each other and to become productive citizens. They learn endless skills, including social, ensuring they are likely to be very happy, productive, self sufficient, loving people. I only wish most of us would have such a supportive family. The world would be a far better place.
