If it ever comes to life, the Smach Z is supposed to have the latest Ryzen embedded APU. AMD even wrote about it in an article some time ago. it does look promising but they have some bad rumours sadly :/
Super stoked! But, I think I'm going to wait for the GPD WIN 3 and hope they address things like optimizing the keyboard, fixing the D-pad, and just general upgrading and polishing. I would definitely love to have a pocket-sized PC that actually works like a PC. I would personally not rather get a laptop and I've been pretty unimpressed with Android, lately.
OkyDooky If gpd acutally cost like a similiar laptop (a basic atom laptop for the old model, and a low powered ultrabook for the new one), i would love it. But its really expensive..m
at the start of the video u say it can run triple-a titles at 60fps then say it struggles with all unity games....Also I dont get people like this who barley review this product. You didnt state that it can run gta 5 etc and you must tweak it a bit
glad to see you getting the gpd win 2 as well. I recieved it a bit before you and i have the gpd win 1 as well. 2's is a superb machine compared to the first. feels so premium in comparesin although the thumbsticks are the same, they could of been a bit better. Would love to see you make a video or two with pure gameplay vids like the youtuber Phawz. Keep up the great work man!
Assuming you're still running Manjaro on it, if you want to try a newer kernel than the 4.14 series, the mhwd-kernel command is your friend. Makes it easy to install newer kernels (something like `sudo mhwd-kernel -i linux417`, for instance), and it's just a matter of selecting which kernel you want to use at bootup from the GRUB menu. I usually have the latest mainline, stable, and longterm kernels installed, usually running mainline unless there's issues.
Oleg Cherkasky It wont... Probably it has several "non free" hardware like the joystick, wireless, touchscreen that the debian guys start to become fresh about... If you wanna a deb distro, for these devices, got with some buntu flavor, kubuntu for example
I don't have a GPD Win2 (they cost about $900 now). However, based on what I've seen about the device, I would imagine that you would need a newer kernel (or to compile driver modules for some of the input hardware manually) in order for this to work correctly. There may very well be some firmware that you would have to add from the non-free repositories as well.
i also own a gpd win 2. i upgraded to a 512gb trascend m.2 drive and left 75 gb open for future linux multi-boot potential. still waiting until full confirmation of support is documented before i move on with it. i hope to install a debian-based os and maybe mint. i don't wish to install a partially functional installation as i've gone that road way too many times before. in the meantime, i have ubuntu mate, fedora and debian running off virtualbox on win 10 because everything seems to work fine in less time and trouble with touch. all my gaming is under win 10. comparatively, rocket league is far better on it than what i see on your video with little to no time wasted in configuration settings. i am really enjoying device and patiently waiting for further linux support. thanks for sharing your experience!
Hey quick question (I hope :) ) I saw a lot of flickering in the beginning does it go away with higher brightness ? Can we turn it off separately from the brightness control ?
Interesting channel. I am an avid Linux user using Arch Linux but I've always said that Linux is not for most gamers. I stand by that comment since most games simply aren't ported to Linux and many won't run well in WINE. The fact that this channel exists intrigues me though. Subscribed.
i have a gpd1 and even with half the specs of the gdp win 2 it can run older games no problem after a fair bit of tinkering with power options and things. (i'm currently working my way through skyrim whenever i'm on the bus! XD) i toyed with the idea of holding out for gdp win2, but $600 and up is just too pricey for me to spend on a fun gizmo.
Something like this would be great for something like steam in home streaming, regardless of Windows or Linux being installed, just saying. A Ryzen or Intel embedded ultrabook APU with Vega graphics would also be amazing in something like this, as others have said.
Nice! I hate that they're still forcing you to pay the Windows tax (bundling with no opt-out ought to be illegal), but it's still definitely a step up from the locked-down hardware of consoles! Seeing as it's a mobile x86_64 system, I'm wondering about the battery life, charge time and whether there are any heat dissipation issues. (I pretty much can't game with my laptop's keyboard without burning my hands.) As for the LCD panel, it's probably like that due to being designed for smartphones.
Looks cool but I'm waiting for the Dragonbox Pyra. The big drawbacks for the GDP Win 2 are the battery life and the quality and placement of the DPad (I'd have preferred it swapped with the left stick). The Pyra will be less powerful, and I'm jealous of the M.2 slot, but overall it'll be a much better machine for me given that I have little interest in playing AAA on a handheld.
the thing that is keeping me on windows is VR gaming. From all I can find it just is not playing nice with linux. Any info you might have on this would be nice to know.
the problem im seeing is the price for what you ae getting... $500 isnt cheap for a laptop, but you get something that isnt too powerfull. yeah if i got it i'd be playing those games that are retro and would run easy on the device, but still, i dont know if its worth the asking price. $120 - $250 sounds like a more reasonable range.
“It runs AAA titles at 60FPS”…no it doesn’t. It doesn’t even come close to that. That’s Linux fanboy hype talking, and it does more harm than good to Linux. Someone that is on the fence about Linux gives this thing a try based on false praise, then they are deeply disappointed, and “Linux is awful” becomes their opinion. This thing is bulky for a pocket sized device. It technically can run Linux, but it’s optimized to do so out of the box which means it’s not a good experience. It’s expensive. It’s not powerful enough for its goals. For the average person at this price point, they are better off going with a laptop that will give them more power and will run Linux way better, or an Android phone, which isn’t the real Linux experience but it’s a far better pocket sized user experience.
Top Android phones are more expensive than Win2 but obviously can do less. So... Laptops cannot fit in a pocket and I have never seen anyone playing a laptop on the go. It's not always convenient to drag around my 3+ kilos laptop just to play some games or edit some photos even if it is more powerful than a Win2.
An LG Stylo 4 costs $250. It can run emulators. It fits your pocket. It can't run desktop games, but considering that the Win2 basically only runs old games and 2D indie games well, but that's basically on par with today's mobile games. It has access full access to the Play Store, so you can stream Hulu, sports, TV, etc. Things that Linux can't do easily. It's a name brand device, which means it's way better supported when it comes to replacing a defective unit. I'm sure your thinking "But Android is super insecure, It sucks" which is true. But on a surface level daily use level it's going to be far more stable than the Win2 running Linux and it's going to be slightly more secure than the Win2 running Windows. Overall, I'm not saying that the Stylo 4 can do 100% everything that the Win2 can do because that's obviously not the case. But the value Vs functionality isn't close.
Just no, no, and no. Don't nobody want a dusty phone with no controller whatsoever to play game. The WIN excels at emulation all the way up to PS2 and can play most indie steam games. It can play alot of last gen stuff as well. There are also newer games it plays with no issue like Tales of Beseria and the other Tales game on the PS4. Either way a phone or even a laptop just doesn't compare. You missing the whole point of the device.
It's not much better on the red side... Well it's not that much better on ARM side either... Well as I think about it there is no such thing as secure cpu these days... I guess you better stick to paper and pen...
AMD is only "vulnerable" to a variant of Specter that only works if you already have root access, Intel on the other hand has a dozen game over level CPU exploits found in just the last few months the buggy patches for which reduce CPU performance by 10-40% per patch, see for yourself why Torvalds and De Raadt are pissed at Intel and why BSD has gone as far as disabling Hyperthreading on Intel CPUs due to Intel's insecure chip designs. www.one-tab.com/page/tmG-flfnQAS97s5GRe8QyA
AMD doesn't make low powered processors like Intel. I think the lowest they have are some new Ryzen that have 12W TDP minimum, but this device is designed for 7W. Maybe the 7 nm Ryzen processors next year will be more power efficient.
I think calling windows terrible and going Linux is OK IF and only IF everything would just run smoothly under Linux. But you had several issues with the hardware running Linux. This windows bashing should really stop. BTW... The only 2 Linux distros that really work are Android and Ubuntu IMHO the rest is not ready for the mainstream period
The Linux Gamer When you connect Windows 10 to the internet after installation it automatically starts downloading drivers and is ready work with after 10 minutes.
Why don't you realize that I'm A FAN of Mario. Not the actual Italian plumber. Also, I think that Linux doesn't run games smoothly. Also, it had touch screen compatibility already and you switching the OS caused you to go through many problems. Didn't try to say that windows is better, it's just my opinion.
you deleted windows because windows is terrible, but then found that your favorite linux distro didn't work? windows works. it is a cool little device, and having linux on there would be great, but i'm in no way wanting to deal with all the hassle of trying to get linux working when steam big picture mode and windows works right out of the box.
Intel hd 15... now that is no gaming gpu, good for AAA titles from 10 years ago, at 720p, I’d say $400 is a better suited price, at the moment it looks like a huge rip off, just get a switch if you want portability, or buy an entry level gaming laptop with a gtx 1050ti if you have money burning a hole through your pocket, for that price I’ve seen laptops with a gtx 1060, which if u weren’t aware is actually 10 times better for gaming then the puny intel 615, and the cpu looks similarly disappointing in capability
i only paid 600 i paid 500 for xbox one x and for it lmao i bought the first one if u like playing switch or don’t have to modify things to play certain games. not worth the price if it can’t run games today not worth it like rocket league runs perfect on switch
either raise that hardware so it matches the cost to performance, at that price range I would rather just get a windows tablet of some sort and see if I can set up a switch like experience.. I love the concept but for its performance level it needs to be cheaper. dont get me wrong I fully understand why it costs as much as it does. but im going to wait till gen 3-4
The Linux Gamer if I need to pick one it would be the Gpd win 2, not everyone has money to afford both, I'd say the GPD win 2 has more to offer than the switch with more games, emulators and such.
Boasting about deleting Windows for Linux when Windows has greater gaming compatibility-is where I stopped watching. I can't trust anything said after that.
Windows is an inferior product. Microsoft will be abandoning Windows within the next 5 years. Guaranteed. Sooner if you consider Win32 support to be the only real vestage of TRUE Windows left. All the games you own will no longer work on a modern Windows OS. But I guess you'll cross that bridge when you come to it, eh? When it's too late to do anything but complain?
It’s an interesting system, I don’t see purchasing this to play games that I could play on my phone, surely the reason to buy this is to play decent aka modern games that you can’t play on a limited mobile device like a phone or tablet?
I mean, to reach their own. Personally I find most AAA games dull and uninspired and the only takes worthy of my time and attention are indies. This machine is perfect for me. 🤷♂️
Maverick imo some things in windows are pretty shit. But for some reason I have a better battery life and better performance in games on windows. But my MPV works better on manjaro.
Of course you're not missing anything. You started your steam library from within linux. You obviously weren't going to buy something you couldn't play. That's like saying I didnt buy a Lexus even though you went to a Toyota dealer 😂😂😂😂
The switch is a lot less versatile, considering its ARM CPU and lack of a keyboard. The GPD Win is definetely pretty pricey, but unless you really care about switch games, the Win can do much more. It's pretty much a handheld laptop with an integrated gamepad.
Prime Technophilia but the switch hasn't got steam so 60 euros x 5 games maybe is 300 euros so 300+300 600 quic mafs Edit : the maybe was for the games, not maybe 300 euros
It is quite overpriced but still an awesome piece of kit. You can get the same speced device from china at 1/2 the price and with a larger screen. But of course the experience isn't the same as the GPD.
AAA titles at 60fps might be an overstatement. I'd love to see a version of this with the upcoming Ryzen embedded APUs, for some decent graphics :)
Yeah and freesync display on it :))
Klaus Morgenholz if that happens I will definitely pay the high price for it but as of right now it is a pass for me
If it ever comes to life, the Smach Z is supposed to have the latest Ryzen embedded APU. AMD even wrote about it in an article some time ago. it does look promising but they have some bad rumours sadly :/
Smach ZZZ
That is if it ever comes out.
Klaus Morgenholz maybe the gpd win 3 in 2020 or up
Shouldn't it be the GPD Lin 2 now?
As I see it, the "Win" now just means "victory". :D
@zetaPRIME: Well it used to 30 years ago, times change...
victory on part of the *device*, not windows!
You got me wrong. Win is just short for Windows.
zetaPRIME Or a abreviation of windows isnt it?
650 usd is a bit steep.
Luke Skywalker sure, for the 3 indies that have an ARM port.
Emulators aren't indie games, are they?
And you won't be able to run any of the more demanding ones, or any that don't build on ARM.
Even setting the architectural difference aside this is a *much* more powerful machine than a Raspberry Pi. It's a big silly to even compare them.
I wanted emulators so I bought an Android BT controller, and love it.
For $700 I'd rather buy a Laptop.
A cheap laptop and a Steam or PS3/4 controller would be more powerful, faster and more versatile, just not as portable.
I love using the right gamepad for the mouse. I also love thumb typing on the keyboard. To each there own
Why so short, for something your so excited about, I’m surprised you didn’t go more In depth.
Super stoked! But, I think I'm going to wait for the GPD WIN 3 and hope they address things like optimizing the keyboard, fixing the D-pad, and just general upgrading and polishing.

The next gpd is the gpd win 2 max. Rumor says it’s gonna use amd apu tech, but to me that just means battery life is going to suffer
at the start of the video u say it can run triple-a titles at 60fps then say it struggles with all unity games....Also I dont get people like this who barley review this product. You didnt state that it can run gta 5 etc and you must tweak it a bit

Can you connect a couple of bluetooth controllers and play it on a tv ?
But how the games actuallly play? Is the performance better overall on linux or it just depends on the game?
Hey quick question (I hope :) ) I saw a lot of flickering in the beginning does it go away with higher brightness ? Can we turn it off separately from the brightness control ?
Flickering is caused by the camera and screen not being in sync. You don't see it in real life.

either raise that hardware so it matches the cost to performance, at that price range I would rather just get a windows tablet of some sort and see if I can set up a switch like experience.. I love the concept but for its performance level it needs to be cheaper. dont get me wrong I fully understand why it costs as much as it does. but im going to wait till gen 3-4
try Geforce now. you'll get the triple a titles running only not good for competitive gaming
Pays 600 bucks to play indie games
delete windows and it turns into a linux brick
Too bad its like 1k right now...
GPD win 2>Shitendo Switch
Why not both?
The Linux Gamer if I need to pick one it would be the Gpd win 2, not everyone has money to afford both, I'd say the GPD win 2 has more to offer than the switch with more games, emulators and such.
STEAM DECK
Boasting about deleting Windows for Linux when Windows has greater gaming compatibility-is where I stopped watching. I can't trust anything said after that.
Windows is an inferior product. Microsoft will be abandoning Windows within the next 5 years. Guaranteed. Sooner if you consider Win32 support to be the only real vestage of TRUE Windows left.
All the games you own will no longer work on a modern Windows OS. But I guess you'll cross that bridge when you come to it, eh? When it's too late to do anything but complain?
"windows is terrible". Then Linux is atrocious.
Yes, the software that LITERALLY the entire world runs on is atrocious. Good one. You zinged me so hard, bro.
Deleted Windows. Tips hat into the sunset.
It’s an interesting system, I don’t see purchasing this to play games that I could play on my phone, surely the reason to buy this is to play decent aka modern games that you can’t play on a limited mobile device like a phone or tablet?
I am playing for honor and shadow of war at the moment :)
If you can play hyper light drifter with a touchscreen, then you're more patient man than I am.
LastStarfighterAJ Dude you play portable ps2. This it's a dream for us 90's kids
The gpd win 2 cost to much for it uses to play indie games
I mean, to reach their own. Personally I find most AAA games dull and uninspired and the only takes worthy of my time and attention are indies. This machine is perfect for me. 🤷♂️
The switch is $300, you can't ask for twice as much for this
I have a Switch and it's a completely different beast.
Is manjaro your new bae?
This guy should be a stand up comic. windows is terrible... lets install linux so that we can play not even 1% of the games... ;)
92% of all the games in my Steam library have a Linux client. Linux doesn't have Skyrim and I don't feel like I missing out on anything at all. 🤷♂️
The Linux Gamer Steam library, linux games = 10780, windows games =47224. No you are not missing anything at all.
Maverick imo some things in windows are pretty shit. But for some reason I have a better battery life and better performance in games on windows. But my MPV works better on manjaro.
But you’ll have bash...oh wait
Of course you're not missing anything. You started your steam library from within linux. You obviously weren't going to buy something you couldn't play. That's like saying I didnt buy a Lexus even though you went to a Toyota dealer 😂😂😂😂
WOW $600+ for this thing is more that I would accept to pay
Well it is a full PC in a tiny form factor.
The switch is a lot less versatile, considering its ARM CPU and lack of a keyboard. The GPD Win is definetely pretty pricey, but unless you really care about switch games, the Win can do much more. It's pretty much a handheld laptop with an integrated gamepad.
Prime Technophilia but the switch hasn't got steam so 60 euros x 5 games maybe is 300 euros so 300+300 600 quic mafs
Edit : the maybe was for the games, not maybe 300 euros
It is quite overpriced but still an awesome piece of kit.
You can get the same speced device from china at 1/2 the price and with a larger screen.
But of course the experience isn't the same as the GPD.
You are shilling so hard >.>
Eh. If you feel I'm being disenguous then I feel sorry for you. It must be terribly isolating to be so cynical.
Ewwwwwww linux
Copy xbox one
Overpriced :/
People still buy GPD?
What do you mean with "still"?
